Sometimes opportunity shows up when you aren’t ready for it and you have to make the hard decision. Changing jobs is always difficult, especially when you’re leaving a place and people you adore—but as of August 2, I’m no longer a teen librarian. I still get to work with teens and do some teen events at the library, but I’m now primarily a manager. The deciding factor for me was a once in a lifetime opportunity to make a difference in my own home community by taking over the small public library in my rural Virginia town. The fact that the three minute commute is better for the environment and leaves more writing time doesn’t hurt, either! . Change is always hard, but my attitude has always been that it’s useless to fight it. Instead, ask: how can I make this change positive for as many people as possible? How can I make sure change leads to improvement in the community, in my life, in my work? How can I look forward to change? . I miss my teens, my coworkers, and my teen librarian identity. What an amazing opportunity I have, though! I keep seeing articles about all these cool libraries that have book bikes to serve their communities. I think my library needs one...and not just because I think my job is to sedentary and want an excuse to get outside and ride a bike. (but that would be awesome)
