You felt numb. Empty. Tired. Defeated. Another interview, another hard pass. And yet again, you found yourself looking over your shoulder as you made your way back to the tiny apartment.

It wasn’t a job interview you were at. The ‘Roommate Wanted’ ad had quite the outcome. This was your sixth interview with a potential roommate and, like all the previous ones, this woman was a shady character. Not the type you were comfortable with. So after having to turn her down and her giving you quite the earful, you made sure to keep checking that she wasn’t following you home. You learned your lesson with a Twi’lek a few weeks ago.

After scanning the area, you turned down an alley and walked past two doors. You reached your own and put in the key codes on both locks. It wasn’t like you wanted a roommate, but you had no choice. You refused to sink any lower. Literally. Level 1312 was your last stop.

The door shut and you made sure to lock it, then tossed your wallet on the counter to your right. Immediately the claustrophobic feeling settled in. The tiny kitchen, which didn’t even include an oven (nuke food galore), was your foyer. A couple more steps was a small couch and coffee table. A hall led to the even smaller fresher and a bedroom that had just enough room for a single bed and dresser. How in the galaxy was a roommate supposed to work out?

You grabbed a cup from the cupboard and rinsed it out before pouring filtered water into it from the pitcher in the fridge. The pitcher was the only thing in there aside from some cheese and a container of leftover soup. You knew you’d need to get groceries soon, but rent had to get paid first, along with another important matter.

Your feet carried you towards the couch when a knock on the door halted you. Did she actually follow me home? You placed the cup down on the coffee table and replaced it with the blade still in your pocket. Making your way back to the door, you placed your ear against it. Another rapid knock made you jump.

“Who is it?” you said, your tone harsh. Another lesson you learned from living in the Underworld: don’t appear weak.

“Open the fucking door,” a guttural voice said. “It’s just me.”

An exasperated sigh left you and your eyes stared at the ceiling. When she banged on the door again, you unlocked it and opened it. “What do you want?” you inquired, making sure to keep the door half closed and your body positioned in the opening. Kysler never did you harm, but she was far from trustworthy.

“You wanna buy?” she said, lowering her voice.

“No.”

“Oh, come on,” she insisted. The Theelin stepped closer and leaned against the door, making your grip tighten so it wouldn’t open. “I know you’ve been craving it. I got the good shit too.”

“I said no,” you said, more firm. “Even if I did, I can’t afford it. I’m looking for someone to split rent with me. Did you take so much that you don’t remember it was you who suggested it?” The thought of getting a roommate didn’t even cross your mind until Kysler suggested it. You admit, it had made your stress lessen, having some sort of solution to your predicament. But now finding a roommate was just raising the stress back up.

Kysler made a low growling noise and straightened up. “Yeah, yeah. Haven’t you found someone already? Just pick someone. Credits are credits.” Her hand went into her pocket and she pulled out a smokes pack. “ Here, have one and think about it.”

You eyed the offered cigarra. “Didn’t you hear me? I can’t afford shit.” Your grip released the door and you took the smoke, waiting for her to get done lighting her own. “And I’m not choosing just anybody. I know I don’t have many options, but I’d rather choose someone who’s not going to slit my throat at night and steal my shit.”

“I suppose you have a point,” she said after blowing out smoke.

“Duh,” you mumbled around the cigarra, lighting it. Almost instantly your nerves went back to that numb feeling as you inhaled. You held it and exhaled. “I’m almost ready to give up.”

“My place is still available.”

“No, thanks.” You weren’t oblivious. You knew what kind of company constantly visited her place. The fact that you would undoubtedly owe her didn’t skip your mind either.

She shrugged and the both of you settled into a silence. Your eyes followed her as she kept looking up and down the alleyway, looking for a potential buyer. Whether she was guessing or just knew, she was correct. You were craving, but it wasn’t as bad as before. You’ve finally been able to stay away from the hard stuff.

The two of you finished your smokes and tossed them away. “Know anyone?” she asked finally.

You pursed your lips. “Try three doors down,” you told her and nodded to your left.

With a quick nod, she strode deeper into the alley. You took that moment to return back inside your apartment. The small place you felt trapped in. You leaned your head back against the locked door and closed your eyes, breathing deep, willing yourself to think of anything else.

After changing into your pajamas, you grabbed a book that was barely staying together and climbed into the bed, making sure to avoid the springs poking through the mattress. Before you had a chance to fully settle down, your comm went off. You glared at it and debated whether or not to check it. No one important would be messaging you, so you guessed it was someone inquiring about being a roommate.

You were correct.

The message was short but sounded just as desperate as you felt, with a lot of ‘please’s and ‘thank you’s. Politeness got you nowhere down here and only raised suspicions. You’d give this person a shot, but you would still keep your guard up. Always. Typing back a quick message, you made sure to leave no room for argument when you told them the place and time for the next day. They had to work around your schedule. You went to put your comm back on the nightstand when it went off again. Your eyebrows raised in amusement and you shook your head. This person must be real desperate, thanking you for your time. That was a first.

As you drifted off to sleep, you kept telling yourself not to get your hopes up. It’ll just be like the previous meetings. And you’ll be back to scrounging up credits which will do nothing in the end. Because you were born to fail.

A string of curses followed you after you bumped into someone and continued on your way. You weren’t sure why you were hurrying. Yeah, you worked over and were running late to your interview with the potential roommate, but why should you care? They were probably going to waste your time anyway.

The cantina you were having your meeting was settled at a corner with brighter, neon lights than the surrounding places. Broken tables and mismatched chairs were scattered out in front. Somebody had already kicked down the specials board and a couple of females were undoubtedly waiting for some clients.

The owner of this unpleasant cantina thought it was the best in the Underground. The dirtiness of the place didn’t faze her. You saw the bright smile on her aging face when you walked in. She was currently positioning a vase of flowers on the counter top. Dead flowers.

You gave her a quick wave when her eyes found yours, but then you began to scan the place. It didn’t take long to find the… clone. Your eyebrows raised slightly and you weaved your way between tables.

Even if he was here on other business, he still would’ve stuck out. His posture made him appear uncomfortable. His back was ramrod straight and his eyes were darting around the place, always going back to the entrance. They locked onto you though when he must’ve realized you were heading for him. His hands clasped together on the table as he sat up even more straighter, then they went to his lap, and then back on the table. Something was definitely up. Nothing new.

His white plastoid armor gave away that he was a clone. Sure, he could’ve stolen the armor, but his face was recognizable anywhere, along with the million others that shared it. As you approached, you noted he looked worse for wear.

“Hi, I’m Y/N,” you said in greeting and took the seat across from him. “You’re the potential roommate?”

“Uh, yes,” he said. “Yes, sir.”

You blinked. Before you had a chance to ask the next question, the waitress came over and asked if you wanted a drink. You declined, knowing that even the water here cost a stupid amount of credits. “So what do I call you?”

“Um, Fives, sir.”

You shook your head slightly. “Just Y/N,” you told him. “Like I said in the ad, I have a few questions. First, are you wanted or have a bounty on your head?”

“No,” he answered lightning fast. Everyone says no. Red flag.

“Do you sell?”

“Sell? Sell what?” he questioned. At your hard stare he stuttered, “N-no, I don’t sell anything.”

You figured he was telling the truth there.

“Do you make enough to split rent?” You had posted the cost in the ad so potential roommates were well aware.

His hand went up to rub the back of his neck. “Well, you see…”

He was broke. You pushed your chair back and stood up. Another waste of time.

“W-wait!” he exclaimed when he realized you were leaving. His hand wrapped around your forearm firmly, but he let go instantly when you shot him a warning look. “Please. I plan on… I will get a job to get the credits. I swear it. I just need help right now. Please. I’ll get a job, help around the apartment with whatever needs to be done. I won’t be a problem, I promise. I give you my word.”

You suppressed a laugh. No one’s ‘word’ was good in these parts. This man, this clone, must be in deep shit if he was acting this desperate. Still… Your eyes studied his and you could see his sincerity. Going against what your brain was telling you, you sat back down. The man sitting across from you visibly let out a breath.

“Why-?” You cut yourself off. You were about to ask what a clone was doing way down here on this level. Why wasn’t he up there fighting the war? But that was too personal. “I don’t want anyone at my door. If you want to socialize, do it away from the apartment.”

Fives nodded. “Of course. As I said, I won’t be a problem.”

“Mhm.” You drummed your fingers on the table. “I don’t share my groceries. You’ll have to get your own.” That was another thing you had put in the ad, but you wanted to make sure that was clear. You didn’t need someone to eat your food when you could actually afford it.

He nodded again. “Yes, sir.” You raised an eyebrow. “Y/N, I mean. Sorry.”

You thought of a couple more questions to ask him, and although his answers weren’t perfect, they definitely beat all the other beings you interviewed. It came as a surprise, if you were being honest with yourself. By the end of the interview, you were slightly at a loss of what to do.

“Er, right. I can give you directions to the apartment or you can come with me,” you told him. “I’m headed back there now.”

He blinked. “You mean I can stay with you?”

You took in his shocked and hopeful expression. “Yes?”

A small laugh of relief escaped him. “Thank you. I promise you won’t regret your decision.”

Oh, Maker. You knocked your knuckles on the wooden table while you stood up. “So directions or are you coming?”

He stood up, almost knocking the chair over in his eagerness. “I can go now.”

You nodded. “Do we need to make a stop first?”

His eyebrows furrowed. “A stop?”

“To get your shit,” you said, as if it was obvious.

“Oh, uh, no. I don’t have anything.” He rubbed the back of his neck again, looking sheepish.

“Oh,” you murmured. You didn’t know whether to believe him or not.

Not knowing what else to say, you turned and headed out. Once outside, you made sure to keep him in your peripheral and a comfortable distance as you made your way back to your apartment. You felt and saw his eyes on you a few times, but you ignored him. You had a feeling he had questions but decided against asking them. Good.

The two of you made it back to your apartment. The alleyway was empty. You thought about advising him to always watch his back when he walks down this alley, but he should know better.

“You watching?” you asked, and waited for his eyes to land on the keypad. You punched in the code to the first one and then the second. The door opened. “Memorize it. Don’t write it down.”

“Got it,” he said confidently and followed you in.

You rolled your eyes. “I’ll give you my comm number, just in case.” You said the last bit with a bit of sarcasm.

“I, uh, don’t have a comm.” You had stepped into the living area of the apartment and turned to look at him. “But that’s okay, clones have total recall memory.” He gave a small, uncertain grin.

“Right.” You gestured to the surroundings. “This is it. The fresher is right there and the bedroom is straight ahead. I know it’s small, but I’m usually at work, so it shouldn’t be too bad.” You bit your lip.

“It’s fine, perfect even,” was his response, taking in the rundown apartment.

What a bullshitter, you thought. “Well, let me grab my extra blanket from the bedroom and then you can have at it.” To entice people to be your roommate, you put in the ad that they could have the bedroom. It didn’t really matter to you. The couch was just as comfortable as the bed. You started down the short hallway, but his voice stopped you.

“Oh, about that,” he said. You glanced back at him. “I’m fine with the couch. You can keep the bedroom.”

You raised an eyebrow. “You sure?”

“Yeah,” he confirmed. “I’ve slept in a lot worse places.”

“Okay,” you said and went into your bedroom. Dropping to your knees, you pulled out a thin blanket and a pillow that was very flat from under the bed. He’d probably still get cold and would more than likely get a stiff neck, but it was better than nothing.

He was still standing in the same spot when you passed him the bedding. “Thank you,” he said.

You ignored his appreciation. “If you need anything, knock on my door. Cups are in that cabinet,” you pointed, “if you want water. Use the filtered water in the fridge, but fill it up if it gets low.”

“Yes, s– Um, yes, okay.”

Again, you weren’t quite sure what to do. “Alright, well, if that’s all. I’m going to bed.” You rubbed your arm. “Help yourself to some reading.” You tilted your head to the three books on the coffee table.

He caught your eyes and you could see that sincerity in them. “Again, thank you. I really appreciate it.”

You pursed your lips and nodded. You could really use a cigarra right about now. You spun on your heel and headed back to the bedroom.

“Goodnight, Y/N,” the clone called.

You ignored him.

It would be a long time before you fell asleep. You stayed on guard and was ready if he decided to try anything. But after you heard him in the fresher, you heard the squeaks and creaks of the couch and then silence. For hours you laid there and listened, but any sound you heard was from the alley outside. It finally became a struggle to keep your eyes open and you began to drift off to sleep in the early morning. And even though you tried to suppress the feeling, you knew you had felt it right before sleep overtook you.
