22. Give us a headcanon for Tenma.

He struggled learning conversational German a lot more than professional language (y'know, doctor speak etc). It gets commented on a few times through the series that he talks like a professor, which makes me feel like he's just more comfortable talking in a very formal way. Which tends to make him sound uptight to regular people lol

adding on to my previous ask because i forgor: it's not really a 1 on 1 exact comparison, my brain just tends to see patterns when it comes to this sort of thing. also yeah i agree that johan's design might need a little more "oomph"

Yeah for sure!! I did sort of add some of my thoughts on it not being 1 to 1 but yeah. I love that thought.

AND LOL yeah see the thing is, Johan (like Nina) are meant to be the "ideal form of beauty" a la eugenics projects and all that. So they really really look like plastic dolls. I just kind of find more charm and interest in the less traditional when it comes to beauty. And also part of it is just his lack of personality lol. Just not my Type

But his design is exactly what it needs to be for his character; he is a traditionally beautiful blank slate. Exactly as he was born to be.

tbh there are some ways where johan reminds me of anthy himemiya (+vice versa), especially with how other characters' perception of them flatten them into these one-note negative archetypes, while the endings of both monster and rgu come to the conclusion that they're far more than that, with kenzo and utena wanting to save/understand them despite the everything.

That's a really interesting comparison to make honestly. I definitely see it! They are both also made to assume a specific role and reflect what the person/people around them want to see. They're not really people in their own right; they just reflect the role they're shoved into - albeit with Johan using that as an active force where Anthy's is passive.

I would argue though that Utena's role is shared between Tenma and (more significantly) Nina; since it's kind of Nina that actually saves Johan. By choosing to forgive him in the end, she gives him back a glimmer of humanity that no other character could achieve. Tenma may have removed the bullet and saved his life in the physical sense, but that was just a bookend. Nina did the actual saving.
