On This Day: August 26 2018

Sleep Token performed their 10th ritual at Reading Fest on this day in 2018. They were on the same stage as Leeds a couple of days before, The Pit/The Lock Up, performing around the same hour of 13:30 (1:30PM) local time.

While there is no official reporting of the setlist for this ritual, as with Leeds, it is safe to presume that it was similar to the UK Tech-Fest in July, again with the addition of their rendition of Hey Ya at some point in the set.

These water loving mallard Pokémon are the friendly sort of Pokémon that love looking at nature with you, as long as they have a little pond to paddle around in. They are spunky, adventurous and follow those they trust, well, like a little duckling. I hope you like her, Bastion. Merry Christmas!

Wrecking Ball: A bouncy Wooloo! These fluffy sheep Pokémon that have a special technique that they use to get out of danger. They curl up and use their spherical, wool covered bodies to roll away or sometimes, charge straight at you as a cottony cannonball then bounce away to safety. Aside from their round shapes, Wooloo are docile Pokémon that enjoy a good frolick in a meadow or just rolling around to pass time. They're probably not your cup of tea, but everyone eventual fall in love with Wooloo sooner or later.

Brigitte: Behold, Sprigatito! The weed cat Pokémon, you like cats? Say hello to the friendliest cat Pokémon that has a sunny and friendly personality that has you charmed the moment you hold it in your arms. The best part, they probably smell like wildflowers from how long they spent time around them. Merry Christmas, Brigitte!

Mei: Larger than life but friendly and a lover of snowy days, the cuddly Cetoddle is a perfect friend to spend snow days with, prancing happily around on the stubby little feet through dunes of white. Unlike the cold, Cetoddle are as warm as a fireplace, their happy mannerisms filling your heart with cheer as you chase the land locked whale Pokémon around like a child on Christmas morning. Ashe: While the male is the leader of the pride, the Female Pyroar is the one to bring home the bacon (both figuratively and literally), she hunts, fights and raises the cubs while commanding respect from her gender counterpart. And what the queen wants, she gets as the female Pyroar has the favor of the youngest members, the Litleo cubs. Shape of Water is an electronic art rock band formed in 2018 from Manchester, United Kingdom in the grand tradition of projects like Queen, Muse, Depeche Mode, Coldplay, The Killers, and Radiohead. Still, as water has no shape, the band welcomes all listeners into what they refer to as “Genre-Fluid” which translates to “music without boundaries.”

Rox Capriotti and Luca De Falco met in 2004 in their hometown of San Benedetto del Tronto, Italy. The first band they formed together was called The Lotus. Over the following few years, the band had various members step in and out on drums and bass guitar; however, Rox and Luca kept the band on track. In 2015, they relocated to Manchester, UK in search of new musical experiences. The band had a short hiatus period and eventually decided to split up. Rox and Luca remained close, writing music together; however, the rest of the band moved on, and after the breakup of The Lotus, Rox and Luca created Shape of Water.

After writing dozens of songs, they carefully selected the best of the best, and started recording new material in early 2018 with producer Paul Reeve (Muse, Beta Band, Supergrass) at Airfield Studios. The band also brought on Sky Van Hoff (Rammstein, Kreator, Caliban) to mix the songs “Scars” and “Not All the Things,” and the drums on the album were performed by Marco Lancs. The result was a ten-song album entitled Great Illusions, which deals mainly with the misconception of human feelings, politics, and society. While shopping the Great Illusions album for a deal, the band independently released their first Single, “Dancing with Tears in My Eyes,” which is a cover of the song by the British rock band, Ultravox. Coincidentally just a few days after its release, they heard back from Eclipse Records who offered the band a deal with the label.

Great Illusions was released in the Summer of 2020 and received critical acclaim from dozens of respected media outlets including (but not limited to) Classic Rock, Metal.de, Punktastic, Sonic Perspective, and Metallized.it, just to name a few. The band was unable to promote it live due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic; however, the duo was able to quickly adapt by live-streaming several performances which were widely received. Shape Of Water also spent time reinventing some of their songs for an early 2021 EP release entitled Lockdown On Mars, which was produced by Paul Reeve (Muse, Supergrass, Beta Band) and mixed by Rox Capriotti. After the relaxation of COVID-19 restrictions, Shape of Water were finally back to play live in the summer of 2021, and they started producing new songs for the second album, many of them written and recorded at home during the first lockdown, with the exception of the drums and wind instruments. After a careful selection, the duo decided to release a double single for Halloween, containing a new song called “A Ghost In Manchester” and a creepy cover of the 50’s hit, “Mr. Sandman,” originally performed by the Chordettes / Four Aces. The world has been calling for more Shape of Water, and they have answered.

The new album by Shape of Water is titled, Amor Fati, Latin for “Love of Fate,” alluding to Nietzsche and the philosophy of determinism which would imply that destiny is already written and we must embrace the meaninglessness of our free will. Interestingly, the band connected this to their music when the song written last titled “Starchild” (appearing first on the album) gave a lens through which to run a thread back through the broadcloth of the other songs and weave this potent, devastating vision. Furthermore, this aesthetic (and rocking) masterpiece delivers a poignant message about isolation as a swansong, speaking to the awesome potential of humankind as we ironically and tragically blend into one another. We wear masks of balance and hope, yet death makes us dust that slips away in the wind. We create powerful machines and build monuments of hope, but we lose ourselves in the process.

Alex Gaskarth - Interview with Punktastic - August 30th, 2006

PAUL: Hey! Please introduce yourself and your role in All Time Low. ALEX: What up, what up? I’m Alex Gaskarth and I sing and play guitar for All Time Low.

PAUL: Can you please give me a brief history of ATL from day one to today! ALEX: All Time Low was formed in our freshman year of high school. About a year later, after riding out the talent show and party circuit, we finally decided to take everything a little more seriously, signing with indie label Emerald Moon Records. The owner, Matt, encouraged us to release our first EP, and then our independent full-length, “The Party Scene”, which brought on a good amount of the online buzz that I believe resulted in us signing. It all happened so fast, once it came down to it. Somehow we’ve made this a full-time thing, and I couldn’t be happier.

PAUL: Which bands are currently rocking the ATL stereo? ALEX: Boys Like Girls new record, along with the new Over It record are spinning constantly. I rediscovered The Ataris‘ “So Long Astoria” which is also an amazing album. I’d definitely say that The Ataris are partially responsible for this band doing what it does and being where it is – we were avid listeners at the time we formed this band, but the key elements for us were Blink-182, Greenday and New Found Glory.

PAUL: How did the deal with Hopeless come about? ALEX: Hopeless found us through our label-mates Amber Pacific. We played a show with them back when we were in our Sophomore year of high school and immediately took a liking to one another as people and as musicians. We kept in touch from that day on and as we started gaining some momentum with our later release, they saw it fit to pass on our music to Louis, the owner of Hopeless/Subcity records. He immediately contacted us and the fit was like two matching puzzle pieces.

PAUL: Why did you decide to re-record and remix a few old songs for the EP you’ve just released? Why not go straight in and release a new album? Was that your decision, the labels or a mix? ALEX: The decision to release an EP was agreed upon by ourselves and the label. We felt like it was a good way to put something out quickly – to break the ice with new fans. We all felt that before writing an album, we should take the time to tour for a while and gain some experience on the road, (keep in mind that until now, we were in school for the majority of each year, leading up to graduation, so touring only happened during Spring/Summer breaks.) Now we’ve got things to write about, you know? We did however, throw in a few new songs to keep returning listeners satisfied (aka. Coffee Shop Soundtrack and Jasey Rae.) We’re heading into the studio this winter to record the full-length for y’all, so fear not, its coming relatively soon.

PAUL: Which song on that EP would you recommend people check out first if they are new to All Time Low? ALEX: Coffee Shop Soundtrack is the stand-alone song on the EP, I think… If you don’t like that song, chances are, you won’t like us… But I could be wrong. 🙂 Guess you’ve just got to listen to the WHOLE thing. PAUL: You’re all young guys – was it a difficult decision to drop out of going to school and become a full time band? Were your parents keen on what you decided to do? Is it something you’d recommend to other bands? ALEX: The decision wasn’t difficult at all. We all knew that we wanted this more than anything else in the world, it was just a matter of making it happen. We’ve been so lucky in the sense that everything has come together quickly enough to take the stress off of the parents. Hah. At first they were skeptical, but as they saw things coming together for us, they became much more supportive of the idea that we might not be going straight to college. Its always there if we need it, you know? A record contract doesn’t come along every day. Carpe diem, n’ shit.

PAUL: You’re doing a few Warped dates I think…how’s that going? For many of us in the UK we;re not lucky enough to ever go, so describe what it’s like from a band’s point of view. ALEX: The Warped Tour was an amazing experience for us…Busy as hell, but amazing. Its an all day event, so playing is just part of what comes along with being on the tour. A baby band like ourselves generally have to bust ass promoting the time and stage on which they play, to get as many kids out as possible… It can actually be really entertaining – Jack and myself put on short shorts and ran around with fliers all day. People see that and think, “Ok… What the fuck? I want to see what this is all about.” It definitely helped us play in front of some larger crowds each day of the tour. After playing, its all about selling CD’s, which is basically the same concept as flyering but with a persuasive, manipulative, disgusting salesman twist. Sinister, I know, but you’d be amazed at what an Ipod and some jazz-dancing can do.

PAUL: How receptive have the crowds been towards you? ALEX: The crowds have been absolutely amazing… They welcome us as if we are their own, and for that, we can’t be more grateful. I just hope it stays that way everywhere we go. Haha.

PAUL: So what is the plan for the rest of the year? have you got enough songs for a new album yet? Do you have concrete plans to record it this year? Have you decided on a producer? ALEX: We’ll be touring the US until November, at which time we’ll be finishing up the writing process before entering the studio with Matt Squire in December/January to record the full-length. We’re all really excited to get back into the studio.

PAUL: Will we see a change in sound or more of what the EP has introduced us to? ALEX: Without a doubt there will be a change; hopefully a fresh dynamic and a new spin on the way do pop-punk. We’re not going to drastically change the concept, we know what kind of music we want to play, but seeing as how most of the songs on the EP were written one or two years ago, I think its safe to say that there will be a difference in the songs. Guess you’ll have to wait and see, huh? 🙂

PAUL: With bands like Cartel, Hit The Lights and Valencia all doing very well, and bands like Fall Out Boy and now Over It on major labels, do you think it’s ‘cool’ to like pop punk again? ALEX: First off, I think that liking a band based on whether a genre is “cool” in the scene is absolutely ridiculous. I’ve always loved pop-punk, and always will. I think its sad that entire demographics will shun a certain style of music just because fashion-hair and screaming is the in thing to do. Unfortunately, that’s they way music works; in trends. As stupid as it sounds, there are so many “closet-listeners” out there, and it needs to end. I’d like to think that the emergence of bands like Cartel, HTL and Valencia is the beginning of a new age of pop. Hey, its catchy… Anyone can love it. Ask any wannabe hardcore kid what they listened to four or five years ago and they’ll tell you New Found Glory… I’d bet money on that. Ha-ha! And just to avoid any confrontation on the matter, keep in mind that, though I am ragging on the hardcore trend that everyone’s come to know and love, I’m a fan of all kinds of music… I listen to virtually everything, including bands that throw their guitars, flex their egos, and scream like champions. Its one of the most entertaining things to watch live, too.

-Now Hanges spice tolerance is manageable. But when you make them have anything they’ll slowly become immune to spicy things and love it. (They’re not spice god on tiktok okay.) but they’re an enthusiast.

-absolutely loves to spend time with you even if you’re always at home. They don’t care they’ll bring the fun to you!

-that’s why when y’all build blanket forts sometimes it heals both of your inner child together

forming the young veins

The Young Veins was announced as Ryan and Jon's new project on 28 July 2009, when "Change" was released on the band's MySpace page. By March of the following year, they had found a bassist, a drummer and a keyboardist to join them onstage for the tour. The final lineup was:

Ryan Ross - vocals, guitar Jon Walker - vocals, guitar Andy Soukal - bass Nick Murray - drums Nick White - keyboards

Ryan and Jon described the formation of the Young Veins as organic, with Nick Murray and Nick White being Los Angeles locals and Jon having known Andy Soukal from growing up in Chicago.

From an interview Ryan and Jon did with Artisan News Service:

Jon: We didn't have a band. That was by far our biggest obstacle. Writing songs, and hearing them in our head, but not being able to play them as a full band up until, you know, a few weeks before we actually recorded it. The guys who played with us learned it. Ryan: We demoed all of this stuff pretty much just the two of us for a while. Jon was playing the drums and stuff like that. We knew what it was gonna be like, we just didn't know who was gonna do it, so we got our friends, actually, that played before us tonight, Black Gold, they played on the album.

When we started the band it wasn’t really much different [to being in Panic!] because Jon and I had been writing together for a couple years prior to this. When we found the other guys it was pretty natural as well. We didn’t really have tryouts or anything. Everybody that we met we met through friends of friends, or Jon had known Andy for years, and so it was pretty organic, I guess.

From a May 2010 interview Jon did with They Will Rock You:

It was all pretty organic, we didn’t really have tryouts. We just wanted to find people that we enjoyed spending time with and who were good musicians. I went to high school with Andy (bass), and Nick and Nick (keys and drums) are both from Los Angeles. I had met both of them out there and they were the first people that we found that were open and able to play with us. It ended up working out really well. We did our first tour with them and they’re all great, they’re definitely a great addition to the band and will be included on the next record which will probably be a big improvement.

Ryan: I met Andy through Jon. You guys grew up together in Chicago, somewhat.  Jon: We were in a street gang together.  Ryan: They were in a gang together.

11. Chelsea Wolfe – ‘Hiss Spun’

For her fifth album, ‘Hiss Spun’, Chelsea Wolfe has delved deeper into both her past and present. Through ’16 Psyche’ and ‘Spun’, Wolfe picks apart health issue such as insomnia and anxiety, searching for some calm and catharsis. Whereas on ‘The Culling’, Wolfe declares “I’ll never tell the secrets of my family,” eluding to a dark history within her family that she had avoided on her previous releases. Musically, it is some of Chelsea Wolfe’s more towering work since the heaviest moments of her 2011 album, ‘Apokalypsis.’ The production from Converge guitarist Kurt Ballou gives a thick tone to every instrument. Ben Chisholm’s ominous keys weave through the layered wall of guitars, with Wolfe’s vocals pushed to the most haunting limit, even sounding aggressive at times. Overall, ‘Hiss Spun’ reveals yet another part of Chelsea Wolfe we hadn’t seen. It is oppressive and arresting, while every nuance is given enough breathing space to draw you into what could be the most emotionally jarring album of her career. [Glen Bushell]
