hey! What would you look for in a breeder and a trainer? Where would you get a service dog (cost not a problem). My psychologist and I have determined an SD is a viable option but idk where to get one.

Here’s what I look for in a breeder

This is actually the checklist the program I work for uses to vet our breeders). In order for us to buy a puppy from them, they must score 90% or above. 

__ Both sire and dam of this litter are purebred dogs

__ Both sire and dam of this litter have a 4+ generation certified pedigree

__ Both sire and dam have completed the necessary health testing for their breed (found on https://www.ofa.org/browse-by-breed) and have a traceable CHIC number

__ Both sire and dam of this litter are registered through a reputable registry (AKC or UKC)

__ Both sire/dam’s AKC registration certificates are for full registration (have a BLUE border), meaning the breeder of those dogs has sold the dog with breeding rights

__ This litter is also registered with a reputable registry (AKC or UKC) and papers come free with the puppy

__ Puppies are sold with limited registration (YELLOW border on AKC registration certificates) unless the particular puppy was evaluated as show/breeding quality

__ At least four dogs in the puppy’s three-generation certified pedigree have show, working, or sport titles

__ Puppies are sold with a purchase contract that protects both breeder and buyer

__ Puppies are sold with a two+ year health warranty against any hereditary health/temperament issues

__ Puppies are raised with PuppyCulture or a similar program

__ Puppies do not leave the breeder’s home before they are eight weeks old

__ Puppies come with at least their first set of vaccines

__ Breeder used a system to weigh and track each puppy’s individual development from birth to when they go home, and has records of such

__ Breeder requires a lengthy interview process before placing a puppy

__ Breeder can confidently answer the questions “what was your goal for breeding this particular litter?” and “what is the goal of your breeding program overall?” without simply saying “to produce good pets” (Why? Because good pets can be found in shelters-- every litter should be bred with a very specific goal in mind.)

Here’s what I look for in a trainer

__ They have gone through some form of in-person apprenticeship (or had a strong in-person mentor figure) for at least two years

__ They are a current member of PPG, IAABC, or APDT

__ They have a background in working with a variety of breeds, ages, sizes, drive levels, histories, etc.

__ They have had some formal schooling on either psychology or animal behavior

__ Training tools are not used in the first six weeks of classes (start all dogs on a flat and go from there. If you need to slap a prong on a dog when they walk into class, then you do not have the skillset to call yourself a professional)

__ They have good people skills and are equally good at training humans as they are training dogs

__ They have at least 5 years of experience training what you are looking for

What's some advice you'd give to someone who's interested in owning a sheltie in the future?

I would say temperament would be one of the biggest thing I would look into when I get another sheltie. Chico is reactive to a variety of stimuli, and it has given me a lot of anxiety. Look into breeders that does appropriate socialization/exposure (Avidog, PuppyCulture, etc). Try to meet the breed in variety of settings, such as shows, home, agility trials, meet ups etc to see how they respond to the environment. Also find a breeder that does breed-relevant health testing (e.g OFA/PennHIP, OFA Eyes, MDR1 CEA etc). You can find a list of breed-relevant health tests on the parent club website. Be aware that shelties can be persistent barkers. This trait could be problematic if you live in an apartment or have neighbours in close proximity. Regular grooming is required to prevent matting, particularly behind the ears. Also check out the FB group “Canine Enrichment” for ideas on how to slow down your sheltie’s eating if you have a sheltie that is a literal vacuum *cough Chico cough*
