I got the tank pack for Heroes of the Storm but have no real talent for mobas or moba-adjacent things. Any tips for a newbie?

Mmm, I am no MOBA expert myself, much less tank (I do play tanks here and there, but I am more about Specialists and Assassins) but what I can tell you is to learn movement first and foremost. Positioning is important, and being able to be on the move constantly is imperative. Also, especially if you are a tank, BE WITH YOUR TEAM. As a tank, you have no damage dealing. Your damage dealers, on the other hand, have low resistance to damage. You take the hits for them and they deal the damage for you. That’s how it works. Unless it’s an emergency (such as a lane that needs to be cleared NOW), do not move alone.

Also, mercenaries. The importance of mercs is immense. Try to always have your camps active. A good team gets merc camps.

Otherwise, I don’t really know what to say because “basic tips” is real broad and, again, I am no expert by any stretch.
