What breed of cat is Puss in Boots?
Interestingly enough, tabby cats are not, actually, a breed of cat. Tabby cats [distinctive for their stripes, swirls, dots, generally with an uppercase M like pattern on the forehead] are like tuxedo cats. It purely refers to their fur markings, rather than being an actual breed.
A quick google search reveals the answer to this question that, as a general consenes, Puss is a British Shorthair. Which, does make sense! He does greatly resemble them. However, I believe there to be a bit more to it than that. I believe him to be a British Shorthair Ragdoll mix.
Take a look at this screenshot of PiB:TLW;
You can see here, he has the rounded face that a BS usually has. However, most BS's have uniform, smooth fur [first image below]. Puss, on the other hand, has quite a few stray hairs, not too unlike a ragdoll [second image below].
As you can see, he's not quite a match for either. He has scraggliness like a ragdoll, but not the the same extent of one, and has the same rounded face of a B Shortie. This could be chalked up to him simply not grooming himself as much, or him being an outdoor cat. I would disagree.
Meet Charlie. He's a ragdoll/[unknown] tuxedo tabby mix. What is his father? No one knows. He's a full grown, 2 yr old cat, and has the same scraggliness to his face that Puss does, and the same relative smoothness to the rest of his body that Puss does. His mother was a ragdoll, who we believe to be pure-bred, or at least pure-bred passing.
Puss's fur reminds me greatly of Charlie's, given the fly-aways seen when close-up, and the uniformity seen when further away. Then, take into consideration- the beard.
Just gonna knock this out of the way- cats don't grow beards. Cat hair grows to a certain point, dependent on their genes, and then falls out. That's how we have shorthairs, medium hairs and longhairs. It's also why you don't need to shave a cat unless for medical reasons.
And, I understand that the beard was almost definitely put is as a visual representation of the depression Puss is going through, and shows he's let go of himself in the wake of having his place in the world dislodged. It was also used as a funny gag and bonding moment [the removal].
However, I have brainrot, so we're going to use it to support our theories!
The beard suggests that, for whatever reason, Puss regularly shaves his fur down. That tells us two things; one, he can't be full British Shorthair otherwise he wouldn't do that, and two, he purposly did not shave his chin while at Mama Luna's while shaving the rest of him, which begs the question: Why? Why did you shave the rest of you but not your beard?
But it is totally believeable that he'd shave the rest of his fur, but not his beard, because look at this!
This is his beard at Mama Luna's! It's disgusting! It's unbrushed and a mess, but just a few scenes, later, his beard is brushed, showing that not brushing/grooming it was a conscience choice he made, for whatever reason [most likely being too depressed to have the energy or will to do so] [He likely groomed it after as he was going somewhere and would be perceived by people outside of thsoe he lives with- something I often do due to my own depression yet physcial insecurites]. So I think it's totally believable he'd shave the rest of his body, for whatever reason he has to do that, but leave the beard because he wasn't bothered and could deal with the itchiness until the rest of him/the beard was tidied up.
Then, look at this;
This is Puss right after being towel dried. Fluff ball, pom-pom of a baby. Where does all this fur go, though? Why, it makes his face rounder, and whatever gets too long is shaved off. Judging by his appearance when he arrives at Mama Luna's, he hasn't washed in a bit, and the journey must've taken at least a day or so, as he escapes at night, and arrives at Mama Luna's at about what can be considered mid-day, though it is hard to tell with the rain. Cat hair grows back quite fast, in my personal experiences, so it wouldn't surprise me if he needs to shave near daily to keep his fur the length it is.
All of this combined is why I believe Puss to be part Ragdoll- and then combining in his British Shorthair leads to the natural answer of;
Puss in Boots is a British Shorthair Ragdoll mix.
Now you may be asking, 'Pinestar, how is this in anyway, shape or form important?' To that I say, it's not, I have just wasted your time, have a very good day all who read this far.
*Sorry for the poor screenshot quality, I was struggling greatly to find good ones, as Amazon Prime, what I own PiB:TLW on, does not allow me to take screenshots. Wildly unfair, given I bought it for about $30 AUD. Let me take screenshots of my blorbo, Amazon.
