That time he made Fang put his dog down 😠 (I have thought about this A LOT because I don't like it!! and I want to reduce it!! and I think it is interesting that the policy Ed remembers is "no pets because they befoul the ship" but the rest of his crew give more weight to the "the love of a pet makes a man weak" thing, which Ed needs reminding of. Extrapolating from that, my headcanon is that someone tried to push back on the befouling thing once and Ed threw out ~love makes you weak~ because: a) he's Blackbeard and that's the sort of thing Blackbeard would say, and b) he's good at manipulating people and saying whatever needs to be said in the moment to get them to obey, and c) fuck you for arguing with me -- which doesn't make it better but it does make it less about the dog.)

- honestly don’t know if this is canon, fanon, or a random headcanon but i’ve seen some interpretations of ej where he gets more feral during full moons and i love that

- personally i think he looks more human near the new moon and then more demon/animal like near the full moon

- anyways

- ej is normally very reserved and quiet. he’s basically the mansion’s go to doctor and is usually annoyed by the bs the others put him through

- liu is an emotional mess. he’s soft and awkward and he just really needs a hug please

- because of his scars, liu needed to visit ej frequently to make sure nothing reopened or got infected

- unlike jeff or toby, liu was actually well behaved and polite, which caught ej’s attention

- one day liu made him some tea as a thank you and from there they started having weekly little tea parties

- over time it bloomed into romance because yeah tea is hot figuratively and literally

- ej, despite seeming very reserved to outsiders, is really really clingy and touch starved. will randomly walk up and put his head on liu’s shoulder or hug him

- liu, despite being the more emotional and outgoing of the two, gets super flustered anytime ej even touches him

- as for sully, ej and sully get along well

- like i’ve mentioned before, sully is a protector. he exists as a coping mechanism to protect liu. once he realized that ej was also a sort of protector for liu, they got along well.

A love letter to fandoms

I just wanted to express how much I love fandom spaces. It’s gonna be a sappy useless post but bear with me.

Since I was young teen, fandom spaces online have been a refuge for me. A second home. It’s one of my most effective coping mechanism for my very depressed brain and always has been.

I’ve always had trouble expressing strong emotions in my life. Because I was raised to be calm, collected, reasonable, smart and critical.

Strong outburst of emotions, positive or negative, were always fround upon, mocked or punished. So I had to find an outlet for my strong emotions. And for me it was fandoms. I can go completely crazy over a specific tv show and if no one in my life can bear listening to me going nuts over it, I can go online and find my people, the other ones that are just as crazy as me and we can be content with each other.

Because every one needs to feel strong emotions from time to time. For some it’s falling in love again and again, for others it’s partying to the point of exhaustion for the body and mind, for others it’s drugs, for others it’s extreme sports. We all want that rush of adrenaline, that euphoria. But none of those options are safe. And for me fandoms were that outlet. That get way to euphoria. I would fall in love with a piece of fiction or a band and their music and I would give them that power over me. I gave the power to a book, to a song, even to a celebrity to make me cry, to make me happy, to make me euphoric. I chose to gave them that power when I entered the fandom. Because I knew that it meant that the next time I hear news about it, I would feel that strong emotion.

We all chose to be emotionally invested, committed into these fandoms.

It’s about that rush of adrenaline when a big news drop about a new season of your favourite show, it’s about that warm feeling of being so proud of one of your favourite celeb when they accomplish something, it’s about that trepidation and the delicious and torturous waiting before a midnight release, it’s about that euphoria when you’re at a concert of your favourite band, surrounded by people who all sing the same lyrics with you, it’s about that deep sense of comfort and belonging when you find a piece of fiction that perfectly encapsulates everything you are and want to be, it’s about that immense relief that you get when you can finally listen to that song that makes everything better.

I don’t know where I would be if I couldn’t escape from time to time to a place where I see so many talented and passionate people talking about those things that are so important to me.

And yeah there’s drama in every fandom from time to time. But it’s always worth it and I feel like we’re always better off in the end.

So thank you to the Harry Potter fandom for the amazing creations, fan fictions, fan arts, plays, projects, for inventing real quidditch... for expanding this universe that he’s so huge and magical because of you, the fans. For taking a stand against the very author of the thing we have in common and taking it as an opportunity to raise awareness and inclusivity for every trans and non binary potterheads. For making Harry Potter OURS so that the legacy of the fandom can live on even if we leave the author behind.

Thank you to the One Direction fandom, that is always oh so full of drama. The one that got me onto tumblr all those years ago where I felt like I found my people. Thank you for your fics, your art, the gifs, the craziness and the dedication. Thank you for making me grow out of my “I’m not like other girls” phase. Thank you to the Larry shippers for making me believe in love. Thank you for the rainbow direction projects and movement that made us all feel celebrated. Being a 1D fan on Tumblr at the peak of 1D fame was some of the most fun I’ve ever had on the internet and I regret nothing.

Thank you to the Supernatural fandom, even if it’s only been 2 months for me. For making me want to see that show that is good but so bad but so good. Thank you for the memes. Thank you for hallucinating with me a better written version of the show. Thank you for the fix it fics. Thank you for using that random cw show as starting point for discussion around queer rep and mental health. Thank you for demanding, all those years ago, that even mainstream teen dramas on tv be better for all of us. You had a real and positive impact on how tv shows are made and thought of, don’t ever doubt it.

And I could so say so many thank yous to so many others but,

F/O February Day 1: Reverse Self Ship

welcome to F/O February y’all!! :D for this prompt, I decided to do a little drabble! because I felt it would be easier to explain that way XD” honestly the reverse selfship AU is so good??? so here’s my contribution for today! XD (warning for brief mentions of self-harm and other injuries, other than that this should be a perfectly safe read!)

           “Rex Rex Rex! It’s on!! Quick, we gotta catch it!!!”

           “Okay Emmet, I’m coming, jeez!”

           Rex hoisted himself off his bed with a low grunt as Emmet scurried to the living room couch. He knew how excited his brother got over his favorite show. Four years ago, popular sitcom Where Are My Pants? had been his all-time favorite television series, but then his heart was stolen by a quirky cartoon called Light in the Darkness that he stumbled upon by chance. The show followed an adventurous, tomboyish young woman dubbed Light and her interactions in the secret world of monsters of all kinds, fighting the evil ones and befriending the good ones. There was quite an uproar within the fandom when the titular lead came out as agender a year before, and quite a bit of discourse since she still considered herself female in a vaguer sense. But none of that mattered to Emmet. He loved the character for her personality, and couldn’t care less about her gender or lack thereof.

           Oh, he loved her alright… his Tumblr was filled with screenshots and fanart of Light, he had all the merch of her he could afford, he even had a plush of her, which he was currently holding in his arms. He was immediately attached to her as soon as he got into the series; at first he thought she was just a comfort character, but before long, he realized he was actually flat-out in love with her. He had always gushed about her, and occasionally other characters, to Rex, and constantly pushed him to watch it. Rex always listened to Emmet’s gushing and supported his love for the character, but for the longest time, he didn’t get around to watching it. He was in a terrible mental place at the time; he engaged in risky and destructive habits, he drank, he smoked, he self-harmed, he got in trouble with the law, and developed other unhealthy coping mechanisms for his insecurities and mental issues. He was a troubled soul who was paranoid that their mutual circle of friends hated him and that he’d never be good enough for anyone. He distanced himself from everyone he loved—even his dear brother Emmet, with whom he had always been joined at the hip before. It was only when he got involved in a reckless motorcycle accident after an argument with Emmet that Rex realized just how much danger he was putting himself in, and how much he was worrying his brother. After that, he vowed to better himself and get some help. He also moved in with Emmet as his insistence, saying he wouldn’t worry as much and that he could help Rex get on track. That turned out to work like a charm, and he was happier than he’d been in a long time ever since.

           It was only then that he was finally able to watch an episode of his brother’s favorite show with him. He didn’t know exactly what he was expecting from the cartoon, but it certainly surpassed whatever those expectations were. Rex was surprised that Light in the Darkness contained more adult-oriented humor, as Emmet typically didn’t watch those kinds of shows. And he also understood why Emmet loved Light so much—she was a goofy, funny, charming, kind, and humble hero who knew what it was like to feel like a nobody or that you’d never be good enough. It also happened to be an episode in which Light tried to talk to and reform one of the main villains, and she gave a clumsy but convincing speech about how she could relate to the villains struggles, but wished he would handle them in a way that benefited both parties. Rex didn’t want to admit it, but that damn speech pulled at his heartstrings. And by the end of the episode, Rex found himself smitten with Light as well. At first he tried to hide his feelings from Emmet, thinking he would be angry with him for encroaching on his selfship. But Emmet did find out eventually—and he was ecstatic. He was beyond happy to share her with his brother, as that meant they could gush about her to each other more often, and soon the brothers agreed that Light had enough room in her heart for the both of them. After coming to that conclusion, they created their own self-shipping sideblog that they co-modded together.

           Now Emmet wasn’t exactly the creative type, and sometimes he was jealous of all the great artists and writers within the community, but he did enjoy remaking the three of them in Picrews and other character customization games. He also gushed about Light a lot, using lots of capitals, exclamation points, and heart emojis in said gushes. Rex, on the other hand, was beginning to dabble in photo editing, so he took a screenshot of Light and Photoshopped her into a picture of him and Emmet, among other such edits. He gushed about her too, of course, but his were more straightforward and consistent to whatever specific quality of hers he was talking about, with less weird emojis.

           Neither of them told anybody in their respective workplaces about their love. Emmet tried way too hard to fit in and was already seen as weird despite that; he didn’t want to add onto that as a grown man who was hopelessly in love with a cartoon character. Meanwhile Rex didn’t give a damn about fitting in or what his coworkers thought of him, he just wasn’t the type to open up to people he didn’t know well enough. However, their mutual circle of friends knew very well about their selfships with Light, and they all shipped them. Their best friend Lucy had even created a few artworks of the three of them, which they both proudly displayed on their blog (with proper credit, of course). They had been doing this for almost a year, and at this point they were perfectly content opting out dating real people in favor of shipping themselves with a fictional character.

           “It’s a new episode!!” Emmet squealed, plopping onto the couch and kicking his feet excitedly. “I can’t wait to see what she does today!”

           “You think she’s finally gonna give Lord Beelzebub what’s coming to him?” Rex asked.

           “I hope so! Now that guy is a real jerk.” Emmet puffed his cheeks out. This particular villain was beyond hope of reformation—Light tried, multiple times, but it was clear that he wouldn’t be happy until his evil deeds were done. Emmet pouted very briefly over this fact before perking up to sing and shimmy in his seat to the theme song. Rex chuckled at how excitable his brother could be. He kept his mouth shut after that, as Emmet hated when people tried to talk over his show.

           The episode started out with Light hanging out with some of her monster friends and being her usual dorky self, but that only lasted a couple minutes before she was alerted of some other villain’s plan. The scene then transitioned to a dramatic montage of Light putting on cool-looking armor, then panning from her toes to her head as she heroically posed in the armor.

           “Wow…” Emmet swooned. Rex gave a low whistle.

           She only stood like that for a few brief seconds before random pieces of the armor suddenly fell off and clattered to the ground, much to Light’s dismay. “Aw damnit, no! Get back here!” Light complained as she crouched to pick up the fallen pieces. This elicited a giggle from Emmet and a chuckle from Rex. “Dork…” Rex lovingly muttered.

           By the next scene, she has duct tape all over her armor, making the brothers laugh again. She and her monster friends were devising a plan of attack when Emmet’s phone buzzed. “Shush,” he said, keeping his eyes glued to the screen. He was mesmerized as Light led her friends into battle, but before they could see just who they were up against…

           “Gahh, commercials,” Rex groaned, muting the TV. “This is why watching things online is so much better.”

           “Yeah, but this is a new episode, we gotta catch it as it airs and support the creators!” Emmet argued.

           “Yeah okay. Aren’t you gonna answer that text message?”

           “I suppose I could since it’s a commercial break.” Emmet reached into his jeans pocket. “But whoever it was should no better than to bother me during my show!” He pouted as he checked his phone. “Oh, it’s Lucy…” He opened the message, and a mere second went by before Emmet cracked up laughing.

           “Must’ve been a good one,” Rex chuckled.

           “Oh my gosh, Rex, look at this!” Emmet laughed, shoving the phone in Rex’s face. It turned out Lucy sent a meme that read “when you storm a dragon’s cave and discover it’s hoarding mac and cheese” with a redraw of Light in the “it’s free real estate” meme. People who weren’t fans of the show wouldn’t understand the meme, but it made Rex burst into raucous laughter.

           “Oh my god!” he roared. “She would totally say that!”

           “She would!” Emmet giggled. “That’s amazing.”

           “Our datefriend is high-key a dork,” Rex laughed. That statement sent Emmet into another fit of giggles.

           “She’s our dork though.”

           “Hell yeah.”

           “I just wish I knew her real name in full.”

           Rex sat up, surprised. “What do you mean, ‘in full’?”

           “Well, remember in Clash of the Chimeras when she was signing the form thing for that order? She could only write the letter K before she got interrupted by the gremlin breaking things in the other room. So that means her real name must start with a K, and we don’t know anything else about it.”

           Rex nodded. “And you would rather call her that because…?”

           “Because it would help me feel closer to her.” Emmet held his plush a little tighter.

           “Well, you could always give her a headcanon name. or just call her K until her real name is fully revealed, if that ever happens.”

           Emmet pondered this for a moment. “I suppose that could work.” Suddenly, he perked up. “Oh! It’s back on!” He hurriedly un-muted the TV and his eyes were glued to the screen once more.

           Soon enough, Light and her friends were battling the villain, and at some point, her left gauntlet fell off. Emmet gasped as the villain used this opportunity to slash his claw across her arm.

           “Oh no…” Emmet whimpered. Rex lightly traced his own scar on his shoulder from his motorcycle accident. The two were at the edge of their seats until the end of the fight scene—the villain was defeated, but Light was still bleeding. Her worried friends crowded around her, but she still seemed in high spirits.

           “Guys, I’m fine!” she insisted.

           “You’re bleeding,” a friend argued.

“Just out of my arm. I’ve bled from far worse places.”

Emmet made a choked-out noise in surprise.

“Oh my god,” Rex laughed.

Still, Light let her monster friends bandage her up. Luckily, there were plenty more laughs to be had by the end of the episode. As the credits rolled, Emmet kicked his feet excitedly again.

“Ahh, that was so awesome!”

“As it always is.”

“Poor Light though. She doesn’t deserve any nasty scars.”

“No, she doesn’t,” Rex agreed. “But it won’t get her down. Knowing her, she’ll probably be proudly toting it and bragging about her battle by the next episode.”

“Yeah, probably,” Emmet chuckled. “But if she was real, or if I lived in her world, I’d take care of every single injury she got and kiss it better!” His loving smile gradually morphed into a longing frown. “I’d give anything for that.”

Rex patted Emmet’s back. “Me too, kid. Me too.”

Opinion on the moon signs! Pt. 1

Aries Moon:

I was really good friends with an aries moon once and it was p fun. She def had a quick temper and started most of her fights with her bf, also was a bit selfish and self-centered. Literally always put herself first, didnt matter how much you meant to her. She loved having pets and was really family oriented as well. Really good at everything, assertive as hell. Overall was a cool ass person just hot headed.

Gemini Moon:

My sister has this placement. She's THE BEST at holding a conversation and is super friendly with everybody. It almost seems like she's had every thought there could be. Super neat and creative, usually the chillest person in the room hardly has any problems with people. She did, however, have these random outburts where she would do something harsh or get physical and never apologize for it. Overall a funny/chill/knowledgeable person with somewhat of a random temper.

Taurus Moon:

My ex has this placement. Probably the nicest fucking person i know. Seriously. My pisces moon ass used to spill all my emotional baggage on him and he would just sit there and listen, never make any comments, just..listen. Buttt, nonetheless the bull is stubborn as hell. He didnt like to put his video games down for anything, it was his comfort. Also ate like trash and didnt maintain healthy coping mechanisms. Had parents who were tough on him and a mom who forced him to learn responsibility early on. I could go on forever tbh. Anyways, dope ass person 10/10

Cancer Moon:

My dad has a cancer moon. Oh boy. He is the most generous guy i know and easily makes friends with anybody, but is super emotional at the same time, to the point where he's irrational. Really stubborn and fixed, doesnt like anything that sets him out of his comfort zone, almost like a taurus moon. Can be melancholic and depressive at times, usually pity's himself even though he fails to see where hes at fault. Not to say he was a bad father though; the man taught me compassion and that life isn't always what it seems. Cared for me in ways my mother didnt, very loyal. Great guy overall, just moody.

Leo moon:

Alright so my most recent ex had this placement and cant even lie, i loved him like no other, but at the same time couldnt stand him. He was a good guy at heart and wanted to be there and support me no matter what, which i really admired, also was just a big sweetheart and was really good at surprises AND SUPER AFFECTIONATE OMGG. But...alas, the stars do not lie when they say this placement has an ego. Even though he didnt like to admit it, he was easily offended by criticism and also tried really hard to assert himself in whatever situation we were in. Was really loud when he spoke, would sometimes shout obnoxious things just to get a reaction out of people. Really badly wants to make a name for himself in his field of career and easily makes money.

Virgo Moon:

I've known only one virgo moon in my life and she was...kinda all over the place. She was artistic as heck and was good at maintaining her diet, used smiley faces a lot in her texts and would give her friends pet names, it was really cute. However she was distant with her emotions and was quick to cut off anything that didnt fit in her idealistic picture of life. She also didnt get much sleep and liked to spend a lot of time alone wandering new places. Smoked a shit ton on cigarettes and really liked her indie music. I liked the energy tbh.

Libra Moon:

So i have an aries rising which means my 7th house is in libra and, lemme tell you, i attract these moon signs like a moth to a flame. I was closest to two libra moons in my life: one a virgo sun and the second a scorpio sun. The scorpio was hella neat and ALWAYS had her makeup done. Always had the newest makeup, brand named clothes, and dyed her hair a different color ever month. She was a chill friend and was down for a good time whenever wherever. Struggled with a toxic relationship but came out stronger. Fun person to be around overall. The virgo was kind of different. He joked a lot and liked memes, but was super reserved with his emotions. Didnt like to speak up on anything that might "stir the pot", was usually looking out for his friends. Seemed like a decent guy who had a tendency to indulge.

i’ve infodumped way too many times and i have no regrets at all!!!!!! super kind person and while i definitely get how the sound is often not for everyone i for one love the way he can make songs have such a distinct sound!!! so many of them just somehow SOUND like the subject matter.

i know this is likely to get ridiculous so here’s a readmore

i’m honestly so proud to see how he as a person and as a producer has evolved and grown! i remember jamming to his older and now removed songs and i didn’t even know how deep i would fall down the well lol

i still love those older songs but each kinda phase has something cool and new! i like the concepts he brings up and how much enthusiasm and passion he has for everything he does and for his fans!!! it’s so sweet to see how much he cares.

his first Real album, TV, is such an interesting concept!!! it’s honestly one of my absolute proudest possessions not gonna lie

the thing with Eyeris is i’ve just found he has had a great track record of releasing new music right when i need it or something that hits super close to home, surprisingly so at times. i’ve gone into the fact that karma is a massive coping song for A Certain Incident, and Exorcism among those lines too. i have an embarrassing number of stories where a song just made a sucky day into something exciting.

and honestly, he was one of the first vocaloid producers i ever was able to actively interact with (via twitter) and it just makes me feel… idk, noticed and able to relate to someone who’s helped me out with his music. i’ve also been able to work on my tendency to Put People On Pedestals (tho by this infodump you probably wouldn’t think so bc Holy Schnitzel this is a massive infodump i am so sorry)

i’m honored that i got to follow his growth as a producer and really there’s nothing like seeing someone you’ve cried wanting to meet shaking when he meets you as well. i swear, i’m tearing up right now. gosh i’m embarrassing myself so much right now. he’s such a big part of the best con i ever went to and i’m just gushing about a person and not their music but the point is Great Person, Great Music (though the sound isn’t for everyone. also it’s admirable how he is always working on making it better! i’ve taken away lessons from him in that it’s ok to want to improve and you can appreciate your past while still criticizing it and striving to be better!), GREAT Concepts

Favorite songs: total shout out to Karma, which i’m still proud of cosplaying and show that cosplay to random people I meet, bc it’s my masterpiece and proudest accomplishment. And bc of it being a highkey coping mechanism. i may not be over The Incident but at least I can jam out to Rin’s screeching while I am filled with rage. Exorcism is also amazing.

Cotton Candy shows a different angle on his style and shows some range–it’s also an interesting shift from his creepypasta content phase to the start of his original series ideas (which i honestly think is such an interesting concept and i’m not just saying this bc i’m the embarrassing fangirl) and I would suggest to people who think his prior works are a bit Too Much

Cry, both the original and redux, holds a special place in my heart bc it was another one of those “how did you KNOW i would need this song” moments. it’s interesting to see how similar and yet different the songs are and the change in about a year in which his style evolved.

out of respect and the fact that they have been taken down i will not be mentioning any of his older songs that have been removed. i still do like them tho tbh.

i love all the songs so much but those are the Notable one in my mind.

In the end, I’m just glad his music became a special interest. It’s such a fun one to enjoy!

Dayton shooter had an obsession with violence and mass shootings, police say

The gunman who opened fire in Dayton, Ohio, this weekend had an obsession with violence and mass shootings and had expressed a desire to commit a mass shooting, Dayton Police Chief Richard Biehl said Tuesday.

“(He was) very specifically seeking out information that promotes violence,” FBI Special Agent in Charge Todd Wickerham added.

Unlike the El Paso shooting, which the alleged gunman appears to have described as part of an anti-immigrant crusade, authorities still do not know what motivated Connor Betts to open fire early Sunday morning in a popular nightlife district in Dayton.

But comments from authorities, memories from former classmates and posts on his apparent Twitter account show that the gunman took a deep interest in violence — and, as in many American shootings, had easy access to powerful firearms.

Armed with a .223-caliber high-capacity rifle with 100-round drum magazines, Betts fired 41 shots in less than 30 seconds, killing his sister as well as eight seemingly random bystanders in the area, police said Monday. He was killed by police officers on patrol 30 seconds after he opened fire.

In a statement, the Betts family said they were “shocked and devastated” by what happened. They are cooperating with law enforcement and asked for privacy while they mourn the loss of their daughter and son.

Classmates say he kept a hit list

Former high school classmates said that he had a “hit list” of people he wanted to kill or rape. He was in a “pornogrind” band with extremely graphic, violent lyrics. And authorities searching his family home found writings that expressed an interest in killing people, two law enforcement sources told CNN.

But the writings did not indicate any racial or political motive, sources said.

In addition, a Twitter account that appears to belong to Betts retweeted extreme left-wing and anti-police posts, as well as tweets supporting Antifa, or anti-fascist, protesters.

The most recent tweet on the @iamthespookster account was on August 3, the day of the shooting, when he retweeted a post saying, “Millenials have a message for the Joe Biden generation: hurry up and die.”

The user’s Twitter bio reads: “he/him / anime fan / metalhead / leftist / I’m going to hell and I’m not coming back.” One tweet used the hashtag #HailSatan.

A friend of Betts and his sister said Betts was comfortable around guns and would teach people how to shoot safely.

“He enjoyed shooting,” the friend told CNN. “He seemed to have an interest in guns, how do they work, that sort of thing.”

Another person, who asked not to be named for privacy reasons, said some of the names on the hit list were female students who, like her, turned him down for dates.

She said Betts often simulated shooting other students and threatened to kill himself and others on several occasions.

“He loved to look at you and pretend to shoot with guns, guns with his hands,” she said.

Bellbrook Police said Betts had been arrested for operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol in 2016.

Twitter account ‘liked’ El Paso-related tweets

In the hours before the Dayton shooting, the Twitter account “liked” several tweets about a shooting in El Paso that left 22 dead, including one supporting gun control and others that called the El Paso shooting suspect a “terrorist,” and a “white supremacist.”

The account retweeted messages supporting Sens. Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, as well as posts against ICE agents, including one that said, “these people are monsters,” and multiple posts condemning police, and supporting Antifa protesters, who often use violent tactics.

There were also many tweets of selfies, photos with a friend and ordinary memes and nonpolitical content.

The account was suspended by Twitter on Sunday evening. A Twitter spokesperson would not comment on the account, only saying in a statement, “We’re proactively removing content that violates our policies and will be engaged with law enforcement, as appropriate.”

Former classmates say gunman had a ‘hit list’ in high school

As a high school student, the gunman had a “hit list” of classmates he wanted to “kill” or “rape,” said former students who said they were told by school officials they were on the list.

Spencer Brickler said a counselor at Bellbrook High School in Ohio told him he and his sister were on Connor Betts’ hit list. Brickler recalled sitting on a school bus about nine years ago when he saw Betts getting escorted away by officers investigating the threats.

“He was kind of dark and depressive in high school,” said Brickler, who was a freshman when the school counselor told him about the hit list. He said he had no idea what prompted Betts, then a sophomore, to put him or his sister on the list.

Several of Betts’ former classmates told CNN that they recalled Betts being removed from the school for at least a year, but that he later returned to Bellbrook High.

The shooter later attended Sinclair Community College in Dayton but was not enrolled in the summer term, the school’s president Steve Johnson said.

A former high school classmate said he and another classmate called police years ago to warn them that Betts had a “kill list.”

David Partridge said a friend had showed him text messages she received from Betts referencing his “kill list,” and that one of Partridge’s relatives was on it. Partridge told his friend he was going to call police and said he convinced her to do the same.

“I said, ‘Hey, I don’t want to drag you into this, but we have to go to the police. This guy could go to the school, he could kill people, he could hurt my family, he could hurt you,’” Partridge recalled telling his friend.

Partridge said he believed the incident occurred about 10 years ago, when he was a sophomore at Bellbrook High School. He said police took his friend’s cell phone as part of their investigation.

After calling police, Partridge said he confronted Betts over the phone.

“(I) said, ‘Hey … I hear there is this hit list, and you’ve got my family on there. What is this about? Why have you written these things?’ He was really avoidant about me confronting him about this, denying it, and not angry, but just shocked that someone had gone up to him and said, ‘What is this, Connor?’” Partridge recalled.

Partridge said he witnessed Betts being detained by police at school the following day.

CNN has repeatedly requested records pertaining to Betts from the Bellbrook-Sugarcreek school district.

Bellbrook-Sugarcreek Schools Superintendent Douglas A. Cozad confirmed that Betts was a student who graduated in 2013. In a statement, the superintendent said they need to get approval from their legal counsel or a court before releasing records. Although Betts is deceased, Ohio law offers broader protections for students’ records and “we have no official documentation of the student’s death at this time,” the statement said.

CNN requested records from the Sugarcreek Police Department, and they responded with a file on Betts that showed “sealed records” had been expunged.

A ‘kill list’ for boys and a ‘rape list’ for girls

Another former high school classmate, who asked not to be identified out of concerns for his privacy, also recalled being summoned to a school administrator’s office and being told he was “number one” on the list of students Betts wanted to kill.

He said the list was separated into two columns: a “kill list” for boys and a “rape list” for girls.

Another source, who also asked not to be named for privacy reasons, told CNN that Betts sent messages about the list to one of his classmates, who told her mother. Her mother then notified the police, who came to the school and interviewed people on the list individually in the school’s office.

“Personally, it freaked me out,” said the classmate who was told she was on the list. “I started having panic attacks in the school building.”

Another former classmate, who was not on the list, said whenever they hung out, Betts would talk about violence and use harsh language about women, like calling them “sluts.”

Not everyone remembered Betts as a troubled teen. Betts’ friend Brad Howard described the gunman as “a really nice kid” who was quiet and kept to himself.

Howard said he grew up with Betts and knew him for over 20 years. He said news of Betts’ final act was “a kick in the teeth” to the community.

Betts belonged to a ‘pornogrind band’

Betts was in a band called the Menstrual Munchies, recalled Zach Walton, a musician who booked the band for two shows in 2018.

Walton described those shows as all-day events that featured bands, including those who perform in a genre Walton called “pornogrind,” in Missouri.

Pornogrind is an offshoot of goregrind and grindcore music; the lyrics discuss — oftentimes in extremely graphic and violent ways — pornographic and sexual themes, Walton said.

CNN reached out to some people who describe themselves as fans of the genre. For some of those listeners, the music is described as an “outlet,” or a “coping mechanism” that they say helps them channel anger and stress.
