"In a new study published in Nature Physics, researchers have developed the first controlled method for exciting and observing Kelvin waves in superfluid helium-4.

First described by Lord Kelvin in 1880, Kelvin waves are helical (spiral-shaped) waves that travel along the vortex lines, playing a vital role in how energy dissipates in quantum systems. However, they are difficult to study experimentally.

Creating a controlled setting to observe them has been the biggest challenge that the researchers overcame. Phys.org spoke to the first author of the study, Associate Prof. Yosuke Minowa from Kyoto University.

The discovery came about through serendipity. "We applied an electric field to a nanoparticle decorating a quantized vortex, hoping to translate the entire structure. Instead, we observed a clear wavy motion of the vortex core, namely Kelvin wave excitation. This unexpected result prompted us to shift our focus toward studying the excitation of Kelvin waves in-depth," said Prof. Minowa."

Guess what, I'm stupid & the reasons below

I could have just printed out a new probe attachment for my qifi x max 3 & it would have stopped hitting the bed during calibration.

Also, I haven't touched my cad design in a very long time & I don't plan to. I haven't felt stable & or safe in my housing situation & have been dealing with a lot of issues regarding my housing.

On top of, in general, not knowing if getting into anything with my 3d printing would end up making me even sadder thanks to becoming homeless & no longer being able to do anything with it, & or even moving such that now, I no longer have a way to work on my l28 engine.

It has caused me to stop working on everything, while I end up dealing with this. its been months. I hate it.

Oh right, yeah so onshape, please let me know, but onshape doesn't seem to have just a sculpting tool that allows me to take a block & slowly shave & drill it into the shape I want. I literally have no idea how to stop getting these random sides & edges that become pointy & I can no longer remove them.

I see a lot of great cad on it, truthfully. But! I have no idea what I'm doing & for me it makes sense to just add a thing then trim it to shape using basics like my fingers. this curve equals roughly this, eyeballed. I never use math & I don't care about it. I'm really well & truly aware I'm shit at it & I have never done any schooling for it, I barely finished the one youtube video & decided to get to my last post about the damn thing I was making.

If there is a better point & build up & push down, cut, shave, smooth, etc tool set I would love it because, screw numbers & edges, vertices, & more. that stuff sucks & doesn't matter when making a thing. Its why we use clay still on many, MANY, different designs before we just scan it in & say, "we cad designed it" after slicing it to be cut in a CNC & or formed in a cast, to milled, to printed & so on.

People prefer being able to do that, as much as I sound like an old fuddy duddy, because its sooo much faster to design these things that trying to come up with this edge change with different magnitudes & all that, that don't blend faces & edges, & leave this terrible little shitwad of a fucking (im going to kill you!!!! The pattern remains consistent, parents lead to me having episode, leads to inpatient, leads to next homeless, leads to nothing good. I try to get job, leads to problems mentally (maybe with a great group of people to help, i dunno, but not holding that breath) & or problems parents because becoming independent & boom, homeless.

They were, apparently, able to illegally talk to my clinic & have them specify I'm not doing enough (see that other long life update post) to survive, they can't get me. I've had 13-15 different (i literally can't remember them all, its so many) case managers, from they had group therapy to enough people got laid off (their words) that no more group therapy, 4-5 therapists (several saying I'm too smart for therapy) over the phone 2 or 3 leaving their company after only 2 or 3 visits over the phone with me, one psychiatrist that wanted to yell & scream at me saying I just wanted stimulants (my adhd meds we were trying to find the right one(s) to take) after saying that non-stimulants have given my psychosis & behavioral issues (hooray for a-typical paradoxical responses, not me having to explain to another doctor yet again that im not trying to lie & I've been diagnosed since I was kid I am ADHD) BUT WAIT! Anti-psychotics, get...*snickers*..*smiles*...get this, so they make me more psychotic & I learned to just not tell doctors because they don't accept it. Like when I was a kid, taking the non-stimulants. Because, "ITS NOT IN THE LITERATURES!!!! ITS NEVER BEEN A PROBLEM WITH ANY OF MY OTHER!!! PATIENTS!!! SO YOU MUST BE LYING!!!"

That'll make sure you don't tell them anything other than its not doing something & you want off of it. I love how many studies don't include a-typical paradoxical responses to medications from people who are also diagnosed treatment resistant, together with fast metabolizer which means you have to take more just to get something & often become more tolerant to them quicker too, together with higher rates of side effects.

Love it...*smiles* they are garbage people, honestly. They think you can't be the person who is the rare one, so you must be lying, because others! Not the medical history, then constant history of mistreatment & being told you are lying by them to make sure you don't trust them (not the science, though) at all because they are shitty paranoid people in power who group up whenever one of them makes a mistake like shitty bad apple police.

Anyways, the psychiatrist (lisa green) wanted to prescribe me spravto (s-ketamine) to me & have me take it at my apartment. I asked her, because I was pretty sure I heard at one point this was the case, "Don't you have to take that at a hospital or something?". She says, no you can apparently take it at home, I go, "no way, wow. that's actually pretty interesting... I didn't know that." Because she's the doctor. How the FUCK!!!!! *REPEATEDLY TAPS ONE HAND INTO THE PALM OF THE OTHER* am I supposed to know?!!!!

So, as I'm struggling to find even a single pharmacy that will fill it, end up calling a specialty pharmacy I got redirected to from others & my...Insurance?..Clinic?...I forget, it was like 2 years ago or a year ago, something like that. I mean, I went through 3-5 months trying, getting no where. All of the sudden, I'm faking my issues & malingering, says her. Unbeknownst to everyone, even the people I see at the clinic. I get hit like a truck in my SSI court hearing, with them thinking I'm lying about all my shit. So much so my lawyer thinks its appropriate to say before hanging up, well at least I wasn't lying to my psychiatrist about my symptoms, after calling them out for not doing any real work & telling them complaining about having 3000+ pages of medical documents to go through isn't a good look & if the judge sees my psychiatrist saying this then you should have as well but you didn't!!!!

That, was a huge blow. Then I couldn't just go to another clinic. I don't even know if staying with them is required for my housing. But, honestly they are real weird & threatened to evict me the last time after everything was talked about & it was fine, then suddenly it wasn't. I can't have these engines in my apartments, but guess what not only that but not outside of it in the front. My neighbors? They can have 4-5 bikes, broken chairs, rolled up rugs, tables, etc etc etc, all of which are still there. Rules for me, not for others.

Simple discrimination. Meanwhile, trying to get my meds here, eventually the new psychiatrist comes in, the old one, lisa green here, never saw me again & left. The clinic, never apologized. No body told me I'm not faking it. Bad apples.

New one comes in, right?! Goes, can't help you, here's this website, I know you have issues calling people & I know its harder for you because you have to get transport & you'll have to do it like every 2 weeks & or whatever but tough it up & suddenly do this thing that is very difficult for you as the disabled person you are. Suffice it to say, never happened. He left back in nov.

Been on practically the whole list of them. 5 SSRI, 3-5 snri, tri & tetracylics, triptans, 1st, 2nd, 3rd gen anti-psychotics & atypic anti-psychotics, mood stabilizers, anti-histamines, thyroids, anti-cholinergics (which I haven't said too often but man, coming through that mess is a thing), alternative treatments with cannabis & psychedelics (definitely the better ones, not consistent, have tolerance issues, can be too intense, doctors don't like them claim they cause issues, they didn't the opposite, standard doctors stupid & or just need to say this because license problems), to even off-label uses of regular medications like sildenafil (generic viagra which btw, is still the best anti-depressant, anti-anxiety, & anti-psychotic I've ever taken even if it is off-label with great studies supporting that, take that fuck face garbage dr abdallah that said & claimed (never proven, where's your source?! huh, where's your source!?!?!) he looked it up. he never showed if he did to me, I found it in 5 min of just googling legit credible studies involving it for those treatments with double blinds & even long term, even real world versus clinical, which means its been a thing for a long ass time, fucking doctors lazy ass abdallah).

What it is, is a person is disabled (me) & meds don't "fix" that, even 6+ years of a great therapist, working my ass off with him back then (earnest ford), then inpatient, outpatient, groups, accommodations for jobs (hearing-aids....wow, it fixes everything), its over 2 decades of work from me as a child until now (33) & it being me finally accepting I was, & a fuck ton of retarded (belief system, views, your perspectives, your very dsm, how you practice & think you aren't literally the same group of people who had transexuality as a mental disorder in the dsm, that dont' go over variable & real world controls for multiple gut mirco biome, financial, opportunity, therapies, the entire relevant genomic sides, the rna sides, the enzyme sides, the peptide sides, the environmental influence on those basic bio-organic compounds side in a real world setting (ONLY CLINICALL!!!! ONLY THAT IS LEGIT!!!!! ONLY THAT, ALL OTHER THINGS NOT AFFECT & EFFECT RESULTS & OURS ARE BETTER & ARE RUN TO BE REPLICATED TO MAKE SURE THEY GET THE GOALS & RESULTS OF SALES FOR OUR HUGE MONEY MASTERS WHO MUST ABSOLUTELY MAKE AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE FOR STOCK HOLDERS & OUR DEGREES WERE FUNDED SPECIFICALLY FOR THIS ENDEAVOR NOT FOR HELPING OUR PATIENTS!!!!! Would be terrible if we were to gain all the data broker data, then use all our now much cheaper & better tools & machines to better average out that influential data variable for a basic chaos theory mathematics thermodynamic moving over time total benefit & or base line, to even detriment of said compound taken with these given constant observations in a setting that has multiple things accounted for, for the given trajectory & likeliness of any given meds success & or failure to treat any given patients.

Same for brain scans in a 3d manner down to individual neuronal firing real time manner, turns out recently thats far more practical than before. Anyways, for that whole thing, meds be hard. clearly. Turns out, therapy doesn't magic up fixes for disability away, & even with meds together it won't. Sometimes, everything is just that...Fucked. Not going to work.

Eventually, you tell your patient that you can't kill the cancer & you are going to die. You make them comfortable. Society ain't changing. The treatments haven't worked for 2 decades. I've put in more work than the doctors & it ain't happening. I'm tired & I need to be comfortable for sometime to heal & allow myself to accept I can't ever do what I want & I'll never get the chance to do any of those things I have come up with. Without a fuck-ton of help from people whose job is literally making themselves look important & showing off, & or making money like its nothing, to keeping patents & shitty society going the same way so they keep being powerful & important, from those that understand it changing requires themselves to sacrifice for others when they are self-centered narcissists that don't even care about the system being what it is, thinking that people like me don't deserve anything, that they couldn't possibly be "beaten" by my (whatever that means, its a "we work together and support one another, lean on each other" not I'm the biggest bestest retard gabagoo shitwad mentality, oooh pay attention to me stuff) designs, instructions, maths, & more, it takes people saying the country is shit, the people are shit, the whole system is shit & we have to follow through on tearing it down & rebuilding the sunk cost fallacy garbage going on.

anyways, when a creature respawns, there is also the chance that it respawns as a higher “tier” of creature. ex. pole plant respawns as a monster kelp.

so this likely means that lineaging is rain world’s method of “natural selection.” if a creature dies enough times, it re-cycles as an evolved form of itself. creatures that survive will maintain that form, while creatures that do not will again re-cycle into a different form until it reaches one that is suitable for the current environment.

the game sort of implies that there is a set order to lineaging (see the order of lizard lineaging from green to red), and that creatures cannot de-lineage into previous forms, but I’d like to think that creatures tend to lineage towards the form most adapted to the current environment. this is why we see no red lizards in Survivor and Monk, since having such a powerful and resource-intensive form would be unsustainable with less spawns and food around. however, if survival becomes impossible without being a red lizard (ex. scug murders you over and over again), then red lizard becomes a suitable lineage option again. meanwhile in Saint’s campaign, strawberry lizards have become a preferable mutation since they’re small and can conserve energy.

Researchers use silicon nanoparticles to visualize coalescence of quantized vortices that occur in superfluid helium

Scientists from the Graduate School of Engineering Science at Osaka University have shown how silicon nanoparticles can become trapped inside the vortices that form inside superfluid helium. This work opens up new possibilities in optical research for other quantum properties of superfluid helium, such as the optical manipulation of quantized vortices due to the strong interaction between light and silicon nanoparticles.

The rules of quantum mechanics may seem very foreign to us, with particles that sometimes act like waves and vice versa. Normally, we expect weird quantum behavior to be limited to very small scales. However, when certain materials, like helium-4, are cooled to very low temperatures, the waviness has effects that are apparent even at the macroscopic scales. This "supercooled" helium is an example of a Bose-Einstein condensation, in which the waves representing the atoms overlap until the whole fluid acts almost like a single particle. This process has no classical analog and is a useful system for testing theories of quantum mechanics, because the transition to a superfluid in helium-4 occurs at relatively accessible temperatures. However, there is still a need to be able to visualize the motion of the superfluid. Now, a team of researchers led by Osaka University has used silicon nanoparticles to help show the features of superfluid helium, similar to throwing pebbles to help visualize the flow of water in a waterfall. "We were able to provide direct experimental evidence that dense silicon nanoparticles are attracted to quantized vortices, and stabilize along the vortex core," first author Yosuke Minowa says. One of the special properties of superfluid helium is that any rotational motion can only occur in the form of quantized vortices. These are tiny, discrete whirlpools that each carry a fixed amount of angular momentum. The scientists used the nanoparticle technique to study the process of vortex reconnection, in which lines of vortices coalesce and exchange their parts. Because of the light scattering from the nanoparticles, the vortex lines were clearly visible.

"Our proposed technique enables us to use many different materials as tracer particles of quantized vortices," Minowa explains. Studying quantized vortices in superfluid helium may help scientists better understand more exoteric quantum systems, such as the critical current in high-temperature superconductors.

When a semiconducting nanowire is coupled to a superconductor, it can be tuned to topological quantum states thought to host localized quasiparticles known as Majorana Zero Modes (MZM). MZMs are their own antiparticles, with promising applications in topological quantum computing. Due to particle-antiparticle equivalence, MZMs exhibit quantized conductance at low temperatures. While many theoretical proposals exist to realize MZMs in solid state systems, their experimental realization is confronted by non-idealities.

Non-Abelian Half-Quantum Vortices in ${}^{3}P_{2}$ Topological Superfluids. (arXiv:2107.02448v2 [cond-mat.supr-con] UPDATED)

${}^{3}P_{2}$ superfluids realized in neutron stars are the largest topological quantum matters in our Universe. We establish the existence and stability of non-Abelian half-quantum vortices (HQVs) in ${}^{3}P_{2}$ superfluids with strong magnetic fields. Using a self-consistent microscopic approach, we find that a singly quantized vortex is energetically destabilized into a pair of two non-Abelian HQVs owing to the strongly spin-orbit-coupled pairing. We find a topologically protected Majorana fermion on each HQV, thereby providing two-fold non-Abelian anyons characterized by both Majorana fermions and a non-Abelian first homotopy group.

Superfluid dynamics in neutron star crusts: the Iordanskii force and chemical gauge covariance. (arXiv:2012.10288v1 [astro-ph.HE])

We present a geometrical derivation of the relativistic dynamics of the superfluid inner crust of a neutron star. The resulting model is analogous to the Hall-Vinen-Bekarevich-Khalatnikov hydrodynamics for a single-component superfluid at finite temperature, but particular attention should be paid to the fact that some fraction of the neutrons are locked to the motion of the protons in nuclei. This gives rise to an ambiguity in the definition of the two currents (the normal and the superfluid one) on which the model is built, a problem that manifests itself as a chemical gauge freedom of the theory. To ensure chemical gauge covariance of the hydrodynamic model, the phenomenological equation of motion for a quantized vortex should contain an extra transverse force, that is the relativistic version of the Iordanskii force discussed in the context of superfluid Helium. Hence, we extend the mutual friction model of Langlois et al. (1998) to account for the possible presence of this Iordanskii-like force. Furthermore, we propose that a better understanding of the (still not completely settled) controversy around the presence of the Iordanskii force in superfluid Helium, as well as in neutron stars, may be achieved by considering that the different incompatible results present in the literature pertain to two, opposite, dynamical regimes of the fluid system.

Pulsar glitches from quantum vortex networks. (arXiv:2010.09032v1 [astro-ph.HE])

Neutron stars or pulsars are very rapidly rotating compact stars with extremely high density. One of the unsolved long-standing problems of these enigmatic celestial bodies is the origin of pulsars' glitches, i.e., the sudden rapid deceleration in the rotation speed of neutron stars. Although many glitch events have been reported, there is no consensus on the microscopic mechanism responsible for them. One of the important characterizations of the glitches is the scaling law $P(E) \sim E^{-\alpha}$ of the probability distribution for a glitch with energy $E$. Here, we reanalyse the accumulated up-to-date observation data to obtain the exponent $\alpha \approx 0.88$ for the scaling law, and propose a simple microscopic model that naturally deduces this scaling law without any free parameters. Our model explains the appearance of these glitches in terms of the presence of quantum vortex networks arising at the interface of two different kinds of superfluids in the core of neutron stars; a $p$-wave neutron superfluid in the inner core which interfaces with the $s$-wave neutron superfluid in the outer core, where each integer vortex in the $s$-wave superfluid connects to two half-quantized vortices in the $p$-wave superfluid through structures called "boojums."

Simulating pulsar glitches: an $N$-body solver for superfluid vortex motion in two dimensions. (arXiv:2008.00365v1 [astro-ph.HE])

A rotating superfluid forms an array of quantized vortex lines which determine its angular velocity. The spasmodic evolution of the array under the influence of deceleration, dissipation, and pinning forces is thought to be responsible for the phenomenon of pulsar glitches, sudden jumps in the spin frequency of rotating neutron stars. We describe and implement an $N$-body method for simulating the motion of up to 5000 vortices in two dimensions and present the results of numerical experiments validating the method, including stability of a vortex ring and dissipative formation of an Abrikosov array. Vortex avalanches occur routinely in the simulations, when chains of unpinning events are triggered collectively by vortex-vortex repulsion, consistent with previous, smaller-scale studies using the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. The probability density functions of the avalanche sizes and waiting times are consistent with both exponential and log-normal distributions. We find weak correlations between glitch sizes and waiting times, consistent with astronomical data and meta-models of pulsar glitch activity as a state-dependent Poisson process or a Brownian stress-accumulation process, and inconsistent with a threshold-triggered stress-release model with a single, global stress reservoir. The spatial distribution of the effective stress within the simulation volume is analysed before and after a glitch.

A universal formula for the relativistic correction to the mutual friction coupling time-scale in neutron stars. (arXiv:2001.08951v2 [astro-ph.HE] UPDATED)

Vortex-mediated mutual friction governs the coupling between the superfluid and normal components in neutron star interiors. By, for example, comparing precise timing observations of pulsar glitches with theoretical predictions it is possible to constrain the physics in the interior of the star, but to do so an accurate model of the mutual friction coupling in general relativity is needed. We derive such a model directly from Carter's multifluid formalism, and study the vortex structure and coupling time-scale between the components in a relativistic star. We calculate how general relativity modifies the shape and the density of the quantized vortices and show that, in the quasi-Schwarzschild coordinates, they can be approximated as straight lines for realistic neutron star configurations. Finally, we present a simple universal formula (given as a function of the stellar compactness alone) for the relativistic correction to the glitch rise-time, which is valid under the assumption that the superfluid reservoir is in a thin shell in the crust or in the outer core. This universal relation can be easily employed to correct, a posteriori, any Newtonian estimate for the coupling time-scale, without any additional computational expense.

Composite topological objects in topological superfluids. (arXiv:1912.05962v1 [cond-mat.other])

Superfluid phases of $^3$He discovered in 1972 opened the new area of the application of topological methods to condensed matter systems. Due to the multi-component order parameter which characterizes the broken $SO(3)\times SO(3)\times U(1)$ symmetry in these phases, there are many inhomogeneous objects -- textures and defects in the order parameter field -- which are protected by topology and are characterized by topological quantum numbers. Among them there are quantized vortices, skyrmions and merons, solitons and vortex sheets, monopoles and boojums, Alice strings, Kibble-Lazarides-Shafi walls terminated by Alice strings, spin vortices with soliton tails, etc. Most of them have been experimentally identified and investigated using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniquie, and in particular the phase coherent spin precession discovered in 1984 in $^3$He-B by Borovik-Romanov, Bunkov, Dmitriev and Mukharskiy in collaboration with Fomin.

A variational approach to relativistic superfluid vortex elasticity. (arXiv:1912.03976v1 [gr-qc])

It is well known that a superfluid rotates by forming an array of quantized vortices. A relativistic formulation for superfluid vortex dynamics is required for a range of problems in astrophysics and cosmology, from neutron star interiors and radio pulsar glitches to possible dark matter condensates on galactic scales. This paper develops a formalism for such systems, extending the well-established variational approach to relativistic fluids to account for the presence of a collection of quantized vortices. The model is firmly anchored in the geometry of the problem (drawing on aspects from basic string dynamics) and accounts for elastic aspects associated with a vortex array, providing a precise foundation for applications which have so far been based on somewhat ad hoc phenomenology.

Photon vortex generation in quantum level by high-order harmonic synchrotron radiations from spiral moving electrons in magnetic fields. (arXiv:1908.11545v1 [astro-ph.HE])

We explore synchrotron radiations from a spiral moving electron under a uniform magnetic field along z-axis using Landau quantization. We found that this process generates a photon vortex with Bessel wave-function as the eigen-state of the z-component of the total angular momentum and the photon vortices with large angular momenta are generated by high-order harmonic radiations. We also calculate the decay widths and the energy spectra. Under strong magnetic fields as 10^13 G, which are found in astrophysical objects such as magnetars, photon vortices are predominantly generated.
