Royal Tiaras Highlights: Queen Alexandra’s Kokoshnik Tiara
The tiara was gifted to the then Alexandra, Princes of Wales - future Queen Alexandra of the United Kingdom - in 1888 by the “Ladies of Society”, on the occasion of Alexandra’s silver wedding anniversary with the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII. The piece was inspired by a tiara frequently worn by Alexandra’s sister, Empress Maria Feodorovna of Russia. It was created by the crown jeweler, Garrard. It features 77 fringe pieces, more than 400 diamonds and it can be worn as a necklace.

Sunderland's Royal Jewel Vault (4/∞) ♛
↬ Georgiyevna Tiara
The Georgiyevna Tiara, also known as Grand Duchess Anastasia's Kokoshnik Tiara, was bought by Queen Matilda Mary in 1922 for the price of $47,807. The tiara was sold to the new queen by Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna of Russia, daughter of the tiara's original owner, Grand Duchess Anastasia Georgiyevna. Grand Duchess Anastasia, born Princess Adelaide of Sunderland, was a sister of Matilda Mary's husband, King Nicholas. The grand duchess was a huge admirer of jewellery and her collection became world-renowned for its size and value. Among her collection was a Bolin diamond tiara adorned with 23 cabochon aquamarines. Anya, as the grand duchess was called, received the tiara among several other gifts ahead of her 1894 wedding to Grand Duke Alexander Alexandrovich of Russia, a younger brother of Tsar Nicholas II. Like several of her Romanov relatives, Anya was imprisoned and eventually murdered following the Russian Revolution of 1917. Her jewels remained hidden in Petrograd until they were smuggled out of Russia, along with her surviving daughters, by Sunderlandian operatives. Over the next few years, Anya's daughters sold pieces of their mother's jewelry collection to support their lives in exile, with their aunt Matilda Mary making several large purchases to ensure certain jewels stayed within the family. Anya's ailing mother, Dowager Queen Alexandra, was heartbroken by the fate of her Russian family and forbade any of Anya's jewels to be worn in her presence. Following Alexandra's death in 1926, Matilda Mary began wearing the tiara for formal events and photographs. She had the tiara altered to accommodate drop pearls, which could easily be swapped with the original aquamarines. The tiara was passed down and eventually inherited by Queen Irene following the death of Queen Anne in 1973. Irene has worn the tiara consistently and it is rumoured to be her favourite tiara.

What happens to Queen Elizabeth II's tiaras now?
These are all questions I've answered in the past so this may be a bit repetitive if you've followed me awhile but I figured it's a good time to go over it again.
Tumblr media
Ownership
All of Queen Elizabeth II's tiaras were owned by her personally and they were not part of the crown jewels. In the UK, the crown jewels just consists of the crowns and official regalia not regularly wore jewelry. There are also a few items in this weird gray area called Heirlooms of the Crown which Queen Victoria's will dictated should be passed from monarch to monarch but for our purposes we're just going to ignore that. So since she personally owned her tiaras she could have theoretically left them to whoever she wanted but in practice that's not going to happen. The vast majority of her jewels will have been left to King Charles III because in the the UK items passed from monarch to monarch are not subject to inheritance tax. If she were to leave tiaras to other members of the family they would most likely have to sell them to pay the inheritance taxes similar to how the Earl of Snowdon and Lady Sarah Chatto sold most of Princess Margaret's jewelry collection including the Poltimore Tiara. I assume she left some smaller pieces to her children and grandchildren but anything major like tiaras will have been left to Charles.
Tumblr media
Loaning
Now that King Charles III owns the tiaras he will do the same thing his mother did by loaning it out to the women in the family to wear as he sees fit. This will mostly be for long term loans but occasionally jewelry is loaned out just for one event. Queen Elizabeth II used to loan out fewer jewels but in the 2000s she started to be a bit more generous with her loans. I don't think that we'll really notice a difference in jewelry loaning practices but of course I hope that he loans out even more jewelry because I want to see it worn. The pieces that are already loaned out will probably continue to be used by that person the same as before it will just be Charles doing the loaning instead of QEII.
Tumblr media
Queen Camilla
I don't think we will see a sudden shift in the jewelry that is worn by Queen Camilla. She's someone that definitely has her favorite pieces so she will probably continue to wear the jewelry she already wears and will gradually add more pieces as needed. Camilla can really pull off wearing larger tiaras and jewelry so I am excited to see her wear more in the future. The tiaras I'm most looking forward to her wearing are Queen Alexandra's Kokoshnik Tiara, Queen Victoria's Oriental Circlet, and the Queen Mother's Turquoise Tiara and I really want an official portrait of her wearing King George IV's Diamond Diadem. The only one that I think she might stay away from is Queen Mary's Girls of Great Britain & Ireland Tiara. It was Queen Elizabeth II's most iconic tiara and the family may decide not to have anyone wear it for awhile out of respect and to be honest fear of backlash. I hope I'm wrong because it's one of my favorite tiaras but I understand if they want to rest it for a bit and there are plenty of other tiaras in the vault.
If you have any other questions about the British Royal Family's tiaras and jewelry please don't hesitate to ask but to say I'm slow at answering things is an understatement so give me time to get back to you. For a lot of this we will just have to wait and see what happens.

Queen Alexandra's Kokoshnik Tiara
it was designed in 1888 for the silver wedding anniversary of Queen Alexandra & King Edward VII(when still Prince & Princess of Wales). At the time Kokoshnik's were terribly popular, and "The Ladies of Society", the 365 peeresses of the realm, were preparing to give their future queen one of the most glittering gifts: a tiara. Wanting, I suppose, to ensure that it would be something she would love and wear, they asked Alexandra herself for some guidance on what she might like. And with her request, this Russian style tiara was a want from her. Alexandra’s Russian request was most likely inspired by the gems of her sister Dagmar, whom was the Empress of Russia.
Tumblr media
Queen Alexandra’s Kokoshnik was made by Garrard and included 61 platinum bars containing 488 diamonds, with the largest two weighing in at 3.25 carats a piece. And Even better, it was convertible, & able to be taken off of its frame and worn as a fringe necklace. The jeweler also supplied a fitted box for the piece, plus an album with the signatures of each woman who had donated money toward the gift for Alexandra. The final cost was just around £4,400. The flexibility of the tiara is apparent; the fringe pieces are not bunched tightly together, and spaces are visible between all of the pieces, Alexandra appears to have used another jewel(a bracelet), to help gather the fringe together. The Kokoshnik Tiara was presented to Alexandra by Lady Salisbury.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After Queen Alexandra's death, Queen Mary wore the tiara, Mary had so many jewels of her own, either made for her or purchased by her, that I’ve always found her outings of Queen Alexandra’s jewels notable. I guess even among the rest of her magnificent collection, a straight up wall of diamonds couldn’t be resisted.
Tumblr media
After Queen Mary's 𝘥𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘩, Queen Elizabeth II wore it pretty consistently throughout her reign as Queen.

Here, Queen Alexandra's mother, Queen Louise of Denmark is seen wearing the Kokoshnik Tiara.

The Queen Alexandra Kokoshnik Tiara, given as a silver wedding gift in 1888 by 365 peeresses of the Realm.
It was made by Garrard in 61 platinum bars pavé-set with 488 diamonds.
Inherited by Queen Mary in 1925 and by Queen Elizabeth in 1953, it has been one of the most used by The Queen.

5 February 1954: The Queen wore the “Rose of England” dress in white satin, the roses in raised material and embroidered foliage, for the Lord Mayor’s Ball at Sydney Town Hall in Australia.
As for the jewelry, she wore Queen Alexandra’s Kokoshnik tiara, Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee necklace, the Edinburgh wedding bracelet, and her Jaeger-LeCoultre Calibre 101 watch.

the wedding of elyse, princess of prussia and nikolai, prince consort of prussia and duke of kaliningrad.
the wedding took place in spring, first in kaliningrad, with a second ceremony and celebration in dresden. elyse meant to have a second outfit for the reception, but she loved this dress so much that she didn't want to take it off.
Tumblr media
elyse wore the queen alexandra kokoshnik tiara during the ceremony, loaned to her by the russian royal family (begrudgingly).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
for the dresden ceremony, elyse wore another floral gown and a smaller, german tiara. the couple departed on their honeymoon from dresden, with the princess in another white ensemble.

I find it HILARIOUS that some people think Kate will have access to some of the best tiaras in the BRF before Queen Camilla. Some have also lost their minds thinking Kate will wear Queen Alexandra's Kokoshnik tiara before The Queen.
C'mon y'all! You can't ACTUALLY believe these things...

If you were Catherine, what would be your tiara of choice for the coronation?
Ohh this is tricky.
She seems to use the Cambridge Lover’s Knot as her big gun, but I’m hoping for the coronation she wears something different. When you look at the tiaras available to other women in the family - including Meghan, Beatrice, & Eugenie - I feel like Catherine needs something really WOW to stand out as Princess of Wales.
So for that reason I’m hoping for Queen Alexandra’s Kokoshnik or the Boucheron Loop (if it’s still around).
Altho I’d be remiss if I didn’t add that the Boucheron Loop will require some seriously amazing tiara hair/volume to back it up so I don’t think any current royal could pull it off except maybe Camilla bc she gets so much volume lol.

Queen Victoria Oriental circlet
https://royalwatcherblog.com/2021/01/22/queen-victorias-oriental-circlet-tiara/
Quote from the link
"Queen Victoria designated the Oriental Circlet Tiara as an Heirloom of the Crown upon her death in 1901, “to be worn by future Queens in right of it”. "
Queen Mary's Crown (with and without arches in the photo)
https://www.rct.uk/collection/31704/queen-marys-crown
Queen Mother's Crown
https://www.rct.uk/collection/31703/queen-elizabeth-the-queen-mothers-crown
The Diamond Diadem 1820
https://www.rct.uk/collection/31702/the-diamond-diadem
"The diadem has been regularly worn and slightly altered by subsequent queens regnant and consorts from Queen Adelaide onwards. First worn by HM Queen Elizabeth II to the first State Opening of Parliament of the reign, 4 November 1952, and on the journey to her coronation, June 1953"
These will only be reserved to Camilla when Charles becomes king. I don't know the protocol, so she might enter the Abbey bare-headed and exit with one of the Crowns reserved for queen consorts (my bet is the Queen Mom's as Charles was really close to her). Or she could enrer with the diamond diadem and exit with the Queen Consort state crown.
These 4 are 100% just Camilla as they are reserved to Queens. Not even Catherinne can wear them. Only when William is king she can.
Camilla will also retain in her rotation the Honeycomb tiara and the Dehli Durbar.
Catherine will either use her loyal Lover Knots or could get Q Alexandra diamond Kokoshnik or Queen Mary fringe tiara (the ones you already posted). I don't see the Vladimir being loaned for the occation and I've a feeling it will be reserved to Camilla as it has both pearl and emerald so more useful than others.
The Girls of GB and NI is the Queen's most cherished and favourite one and we have come to identify the tiara with her. I have a feeling the Queen might leave it to Prince William, so Catherine can be the one to wear it after her death. She has let only Catherine wear very cherished pieces of jewelry (Philip's bracelet wedding gift is an example). I don't see Catherine wearing it at the coronation, unless the Queen has asked her to. Then she will comply.
As for Anne and Sophie they will wear one they have usage of and both Zara and Louise will wear one belonging to their mother.
I din't see Beatrice being borrowed the fringe. If Fergie isn't invited as she might not have remarried Andrew, then I could see Eugenie wearing her mom's and Beatrice wearing either the Greville emerald kokoshin (the one worn by her sister at her wedding) or the Strathmore tiara (it belonged to the Queen Mom).
Meghan will be just be given the one she married in if she is invited. No attention for her in a new tiara. That solves the problem.
As for the Lotus and the Halo I think they are in Catherine's rotation (at least the Lotus) so I don't see them being borrowed on that day.
The Aquamarine tiara and Burmese tiara (worn by the Queen) will enter Camilla's rotation. Not sure about the Burmese as she could leave a ruby tiara to Catherine since she would already have the Oriental circlet.
