Anurag Kashyap: The Maverick Filmmaker Redefining Indian Cinema
In the realm of Indian cinema, few names evoke as much respect and admiration as Anurag Kashyap. Known for his gritty storytelling, unflinching realism, and penchant for pushing boundaries, Kashyap has carved a niche for himself as a maverick filmmaker. His work, often marked by its raw and unpolished narrative style, challenges conventional Bollywood norms and offers a refreshing alternative to mainstream Indian cinema.
Early Life and Struggles
Anurag Kashyap was born on September 10, 1972, in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh. His early life was far from the glitz and glamour of the film industry. Growing up in a middle-class family, Kashyap's initial aspirations lay far from filmmaking. It wasn't until he encountered Vittorio De Sica’s neorealism in "Bicycle Thieves" that he developed a passion for cinema. His journey to Bollywood was fraught with challenges. Moving to Mumbai in the early 1990s, Kashyap faced numerous rejections and financial hardships. Despite these struggles, his determination and unique vision for storytelling eventually caught the eye of the industry.
Breakthrough with "Satya"
Kashyap’s breakthrough came as a co-writer for Ram Gopal Varma's critically acclaimed film "Satya" (1998). The film, a gritty portrayal of Mumbai's underworld, was a stark departure from the escapist fare typical of Bollywood at the time. "Satya" not only established Kashyap as a formidable writer but also set the tone for his future directorial ventures.
Directorial Debut and Rise to Prominence
Anurag Kashyap’s directorial debut, "Paanch," though mired in censorship controversies, showcased his bold narrative style. However, it was "Black Friday" (2004), based on the 1993 Bombay bombings, that truly established him as a director to watch. The film’s raw depiction of real events was both lauded and criticized, further solidifying Kashyap's reputation for fearless filmmaking.
His subsequent films, "Dev.D" (2009) and "Gulaal" (2009), continued to challenge traditional Bollywood storytelling. "Dev.D," a modern retelling of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's classic novel "Devdas," was particularly notable for its innovative approach and complex characters.
The Gangs of Wasseypur Saga
The two-part epic "Gangs of Wasseypur" (2012) is perhaps Kashyap’s magnum opus. Spanning several decades, the saga of crime, politics, and family feuds in the coal mafia of Dhanbad is a testament to his storytelling prowess. The films were praised for their authentic portrayal of rural India and intricate plotlines, earning Kashyap international acclaim.
Beyond Directing: Producer and Mentor
In addition to his directorial ventures, Kashyap has played a significant role as a producer and mentor. Through his production company, Phantom Films, he has supported various independent filmmakers, fostering new talent in the industry. Films like "Udaan" (2010), "Lootera" (2013), and "Queen" (2014) owe part of their success to Kashyap's backing.
A Controversial Figure
Kashyap’s career has not been without controversy. His outspoken nature and willingness to tackle contentious subjects have often put him at odds with the establishment. Films like "Ugly" (2013) and "Raman Raghav 2.0" (2016) further cemented his reputation as a provocateur, unafraid to delve into the darker aspects of human nature.
Legacy and Impact
Anurag Kashyap's influence on Indian cinema is undeniable. He has paved the way for a new generation of filmmakers who are not afraid to experiment with form and content. His contribution to the Indian film industry extends beyond his filmography, inspiring a wave of realistic and narrative-driven cinema.
In a landscape dominated by formulaic blockbusters, Anurag Kashyap stands out as a beacon of creativity and originality. His films, often characterized by their depth, complexity, and socio-political relevance, continue to resonate with audiences both in India and globally. As he continues to break new ground, Kashyap remains a seminal figure in the evolution of contemporary Indian cinema.

Movies I watched this week (Year 4, first week!)
How shall I open 2024 [since 'The Zone of Interest' is not streaming yet]?
It has to be something special; A re-watch of René Laloux's psychedelic allegory Fantastic Planet?
Mysterious mythology, straight out of the pages of The Voynich manuscript [and which directly inspired the Codex Seraphinianus, another unfathomable world-building vision]. The suffering humans, used as pets by the giant blue "Draags", spiritually advanced, and still cruel to their tiny Oms ("hommes"). Excellent!'
Edit on 1/21/24: I found the SQEALER clip I used to love so much 20 years ago!
🍿
"This is where we ended up".
Re-watching one of my favorite 2023 stories, the miraculous, fateful Past Lives. A loss of first love, innocence. With a moody, excellent score. Greta Lee is such a babe, and producer Christine Vachon, wow. (Photo Above).
10/10. I can't wait for Celine Song's upcoming second feature, 'The materialists'.
(*Woman Director)
🍿
2 more by Danish director Nicolaj Arcel:
🍿 The promised land, called 'Bastarden' in Danish, an epic historical drama, the latest script from Anders Thomas Jensen. Mads Mikkelsen is phenomenal as he plays a similar personality to the one he did in 'Riders of Justice'; laconic, broken and impatiently resolute - but 300 years earlier. A brutal 'western' fought in Jutland's vast emptiness. I didn't know about the history of the Swedish Romanis. Savage and sentimental! 9/10.
🍿[For the first time in my life, I listened to Margrethe II, the Danish Queen, give her New Year's speech (in which she also abdicated her throne). I loved it; So humane, so down-to-earth.]
What I didn't love is Nicolaj Arcel's earlier A royal affair, a dull and conventional costume drama about an earlier queen. It was beautifully filmed, it had Mads Mikkelsen dancing in it, and a mad king who suffered from excessive onanism. But these are all the positives I could find. 2/10.
Apparently, the predictably-told story is based on interesting chapter from 18 century Danish history.
🍿
"Garbo Talks!" and the first thing she said was "Gimme a whisky, ginger ale on the side, and don't be stingy, baby!". In Anna Christie, her first 'Talkie', she played a "woman with a past". M'eh.
🍿
Hundreds of beavers, a bizarro freezing-cold Wisconsin indie, due to open on January 26. A drunk fur-trapper in the 19 century is tasked with killing scores of beavers so that a tobacco-spitting fur merchant will grant him his daughter's hand in marriage. Weird, wordless, black-and-white, live action Road Runner / Looney Tunes / Max Fleischer cartoons-style mayhem. The credits starts at 33:00. The whole thing is too weird. Reminds me of the book 'Millions of cats' [which incidentally was released to the public domain on the exact same day I thought of it!].
5/10 from me, mostly for innovation.
🍿
"When the child was a child it walked with its arms swinging, wanted the brook to be a river, the river to be a torrent, and this puddle to be the sea. When the child was a child, it didn’t know that it was a child, to it, everything had a soul, and all souls were one."
First watch: Wim Wenders' poetic art house fantasy Wings of desire. I know it's considered an 'Angle-on-earth' spiritual masterpiece, and I imagine that younger-me would have find it uplifting. 1987 Berlin looked grim and lonely indeed. 4/10.
🍿
Re-watch: The tense Emily The Criminal. A despairing Neo-realist indictment that pivots into a white-knuckled crime thriller. Without a single note of preachy commentary, it exposes millennials prospects like a de Sica. I don't recall any recent movie that described Arab-American sub-culture so guilelessly. 8/10.
🍿
The private life of a cat, another short from experimental LA filmmaker Maya Deren. Basically it's a 'Cat Video' from 1946 (which begs the question 'What caused the first person to say, Let's make a movie about the cat because she's so cute?')
(*Woman Director)
🍿
3 silent film classics:
🍿Buster Keaton's amusing Neighbors, a 1920 two-reel'er, a riff on Romeo and Juliet.
🍿 20 minutes of love (1914) is Charlie Chaplin's first landmark film as director. Simple slapstick, in what looks like Fairmont Park in Riverside, CA.
🍿 Should Married Men Go Home, the first pairing of Laurel & Hardy, my least favorite of the famous old silent film comedians.
🍿
Early middling shorts by 2 Canadian directors:
🍿 (From a Letterbox list of 'Early Short Films That Launched Major Directors', which I'm going to tear through one day.)
"Well, you picked a great time to be trans!..."
We Forgot to Break Up has an unusual proposition (A former rock musician reintroducing himself to his ex-bandmates for the first time since abandoning the band and coming out as a trans man), but there's not much more there besides that outline.
(*Woman Director)
🍿 Void, The first film-school-style short by Emma Seligman (who followed it up with the much better 'Shiva baby'). A young woman likes to masturbate, smoke weed and fantasize about a boy. But then who doesn't?
(*Woman Director)
🍿
A YouTuber named “Ryan Randomness” built a rail car and traveled on abandoned train tracks in the deserts of Southern California. Extremely enjoyable! It made me sad that I didn’t hike more during the years that I lived there.
🍿
Throw-back to the "Art project”:
Millions of Cats Adora.
Exploring Southern California With Adora.
🍿

Azibal, the Pirate Princess
Tumblr media
Art commissioned from the always amazing Telenia Albuquerque! @9musesandanoldmind
Meet Princess Azibal, one of the more recent characters from First Empress. Azi is a daughter of an infamous Venarri (Phoenician) corsair warlord known as Barkit, the Pirate King. Early in book two, Queen Viarra and three of her warships thwart a pirate attack on a small, island fishing town while on their way to visit one of her rivals. Azibal and her crews take the villagers hostage in order to secure a chance to escape imprisonment and execution.
As part of the negotiation, Queen Viarra keeps Azibal as a political hostage to ensure her father leaves Vi and her allies alone. At the same time, Azibal serves as her father’s emissary to Viarra’s court and an advisor against the hegemony’s domestic pirate threats.
********
“General, we’re holding the gate, but the pirates within have taken hostages,” a hoplite reported as Derron approached the village.
“No surprise,” Derron nodded. “Any competent brigand knows how to use a hostage screen to their advantage, and this lot is one of the more professional I’ve seen,” he admitted.
At his approach, the hoplites guarding the gate stepped aside to let him pass. Over a hundred villagers had been rounded up, on their knees with their hands behind their heads. A dozen or more bodies lay about the village square, and most of the survivors looked like they’d been roughed up before Queen Viarra’s soldiers arrived. Fifty to sixty armed pirates stood over the prisoners, facing off with Viarra’s hoplites.
A brawny, tallish young woman with olive skin and obsidian dreadlocks stood at the head of the pirates. She wore a leather-and-bronze layered cuirass and brandished a spear and buckler with a wicked sica strapped to her hip. Beside her stood a teenaged boy in leather armor, holding a kopis to a villager’s throat. Their similar skin tone and facial features suggested siblings.
“Stay the fuck back, hoplite,” the woman warned in a heavy Venarri accent. “I’m sure you can overwhelm us before we murder all of the villagers, but I suspect we can kill enough to defeat the purpose of your rescue.”
“If it helps you feel better, we let your friends outside flee,” Derron assured her. “I think we can settle this without more bloodshed.”
The woman scowled, but craned her neck to look over the helms of Derron’s hoplites. She raised her brows in surprise for a moment, apparently seeing her allies’ escape. Her eyes widened and she stumbled back a pace as something else loomed into her vision. Derron smirked beneath his helmet as Queen Viarra stepped past him a moment later.
“You–you’re… Queen Viarraluca,” the woman stammered, stepping back yet another pace.
“And you’re one of Barkit the Pirate King’s daughters, if I’m not mistaken,” Queen Viarra observed coolly, stuffing her spear into the sand before doffing her helmet. Derron raised his brows and nodded at the mention of the infamous Venarri pirate king. “You look early twenties, which makes you either Princess Azibal or Princess Tanitha,” her majesty deduced.
“Princess Azibal,” she confirmed. “But, why are you here, your majesty?” she asked. “These waters belong to none of your allies.”
“Merely passing through,” Queen Viarra admitted. “We’re on our way to Pellastor and wished to trade for food and water. But in return, I must ask, why are you here? This is a long way west of your family’s usual territory.”
If Derron recalled, King Barkit’s fleets normally raided well to the east of here, preying on shipping around the great island of Botrys. Something like a hundred and fifty or a hundred and sixty miles long, the maps of Botrys always reminded him of a curling strip of bacon, running north to south and bulging outward to the east. It was the largest island in the Vestic Sea and was considered by geographers to be the primary division between the Vestic and her sister sea, the Istartus.
“Aye, it is,” Princess Azibal agreed. “My father looks to expand our territory and sent Yarik and me to scout these waters,” she explained, gesturing to the teenager beside her.
“Makes sense,” Queen Viarra granted. “With the constant conflicts between the Empire of Pellastor and Illaran Hegemony, Emperor Orvandius’s northern allies are a bit underdefended of late.”
“Aye, that was our rationale,” Azibal agreed.
“I hope you’ll forgive me if I recommend against it,” her majesty countered. “Too many of my allies rely on trade with Pellastor’s northern allies. With my hegemony freed from its past debts to Pellastor, I’m already focusing on deploying more ships southward and negotiating treaties to allow use of the local harbors for bases of operation. A new major pirate threat to the region would complicate too many of my plans.”
“Aye, but that’s not my decision to make,” Azibal admitted.
“I’m aware,” Queen Viarra nodded. “Your father, half-sister, and step mother form the triumvirate that makes those decisions. But since we’re negotiating for these hostages anyway, I propose a deal.”
“Alright, talk,” Azibal frowned, glancing at her crewmates before looking back at the queen.
“If you set the prisoners free, my hoplites will back off and allow your crews to leave peacefully, keeping either you or your brother with me as hostage,” her majesty proposed. “The other sibling will report back to your family, warning them to stay out of my waters and Pellastor’s northern waters. The sibling who stays as hostage will remain with my entourage, both as collateral and as an emissary in future relations between my hegemony and your family. Does that sound fair?”
“You said Pellastor’s ‘northern waters,’ aye?” Prince Yarik finally spoke up, raising a brow.
“Correct,” her majesty nodded. “Their southern waters along the mainland are frankly not my concern.”
The prince smirked and seemed to chuckle as he nodded a little.
Princess Azibal seemed to think it over, conferring in hushed tones with Prince Yarik and two other officers. After a long deliberation and one of the officers becoming visibly upset but outvoted, Azibal turned back toward Queen Viarra.
“Aye, let my crews leave, and I’ll stay as hostage,” Azibal agreed.
Derron immediately decided he was glad of Queen Viarra’s foresight. The last thing the hegemony needed was a vengeful pirate warlord invading their waters over the deaths of two of his children.

Alessandra Panaro (1939-2019) by Truus, Bob & Jan too! Italian postcard by Casa Edit. Ballerini & Fratini, Firenze (B.F.F.), no. 3579. Photo: G.B. Poletto / Titanus Last Wednesday, 1 May 2019, Alessandra Panaro (1939), an Italian former film actress of the late 1950s and early 1960s, passed away. She is best known for Luchino Visconti's crime drama Rocco e i suoi fratelli/Rocco and His Brothers (1960). Alessandra Panaro was born in Rome, Italy in 1939. Panaro began her film career in 1954 with Il barcaiole di Amalfi/The boatman of Amalfi (Mino Roli, 1954) starring Mario Vitale. One of her next films was the Italian drama Gli innamorati/Wild Love (1955) directed by Mauro Bolognini. The film, starring Antonella Lualdi and Franco Interlenghi, was entered into the 1956 Cannes Film Festival. In a considerable number of romantic comedies, she played the young love interest. Examples are the big hit Poveri ma belli/Girl in a Bikini (1956) and the sequels Belle ma povere/ Poor Girl, Pretty Girl (1957) and Poveri milionari (1959). All were directed by Dino Risi and starred Marisa Allasio, Maurizio Arena, Renato Salvatori, Lorella De Luca, and Panaro. On TV she co-hosted with Lorella De Luca the show Il Musichiere/The musicians in 1957. In 1957 she also played the leading role in the comedy Lazzarella by Carlo Ludovico Bragaglia, a film based on a popular song written by Domenico Modugno and Riccardo Pazzaglia. She played Totò’s daughter in the satire Totò, Peppino e le fanatiche/Toto, Peppino and the Fanatics (Mario Mattoli, 1958) with Peppino De Filippo. And she played Nora, the girlfriend of Bruno (Mario Girotti - the future Terence Hill) in the film Cerasella (Raffaello Matarazzo, 1959) featuring Claudia Mori. Alessandra Panaro’s best-known film is the beautiful drama Rocco e i suoi fratelli/Rocco and His Brothers (Luchino Visconti, 1960). Set in Milan, it tells the story of an immigrant family from the South, led to the industrial North by the matriarch (Katina Paxinou). Presented in five distinct sections, the film weaves the story of Vincenzo (Spiros Fócas), Simone (Renato Salvatori), Rocco (Alain Delon), Ciro (Max Cartier) and Luca (Rocco Vidolazzi) as they struggle to adapt to life in the large and impersonal city of Milan. In typical fashion for a director known for helping build Italian neo-realism, the film ends with no substantive resolution, but with clouds of doom hanging over the family. Pannaro played Ciro’s fiancée Franca. Elbert Ventura at AllMovie: “Painted with bold strokes and marked by inflamed passions, Rocco and His Brothers holds you in rapt attention despite its sprawling story. Visconti punctuates the Parondis' struggles with two harrowing scenes of ritualized violence that profoundly change the family and underscore the operatic determinism of Visconti's vision. The movie's visceral intensity is matched only by the elegance and intelligence of the mise-en-scène, with its fine compositions, graceful camera moves, and evocative black-and-white cinematography. A work of overpowering power and stark beauty, Rocco and His Brothers stands as a vivid masterpiece from one of cinema's great artists.” During the golden age of the European genre film, Alessandra Panaro played roles in each popular genre. She often used the more American sounding pseudonym Topsy Collins. She co-starred in peplums – the Italian sword-and-sandal adventure films - like Le Baccanti/The Bacchantes (Giorgio Ferroni, 1960) with Pierre Brice, and Ulisse contro Ercole/Ulysses Against Hercules (Mario Caiano, 1962) starring Georges Marchal. She played the beautiful virgin Queen Medea, Gordon Scott's love interest, in Ercole contro Molock/Hercules Against Moloch (Giorgio Ferroni, 1963). In Germany, she appeared in the Karl May western Der Schatz der Azteken/The Treasure of the Aztecs (Robert Siodmak, 1965) with Lex Barker. One of her last films was the spaghetti western 30 Winchester per El Diablo/30 Winchesters for El Diablo (Gianfranco Baldanello, 1965) starring Carl Möhner. After finishing her film career she returned to the screen with her old colleague Lorella de Luca in La madama (Duccio Tessari, 1976) starring Christian De Sica. And 33 years later she made one more guest appearance in an episode of the Brazilian TV series A Grande Família/The Large Family (2009). Her final screen appearance was in the Italian film La notte è piccola per noi/The Night is Small for us (Gianfrancesco Lazotti, 2016) with Cristiana Capotondi and Philippe Leroy. Panaro was married twice, first to banker Jean-Pierre Sabet who died in 1983, and then to actor Giancarlo Sbragia, who died in 1994. Alessandra Pannaro passed away in Geneva, Switzerland. She was 79.
