That does it. Every Lowe's employee who hears that I'm building a dungeon and immediately assumes "sex dungeon" is getting put in the hallway with a slowly lowering ceiling with spikes on it that has a door at the end that opens into a 40 ft deep pit occupied by a Gelatinous Cube. Stop raising your eyebrow and just sell me the fucking QuikCrete.

So, what is the difference between concrete and cement? I genuinely didn't know there was one.
Okay so 1- I'm not sober right now and 2- Concrete was one of my top 3 favorite college classes (along with botany and architectural history from early gothic to 1700s-ish. yes i had a concrete class. it was required for my major)
So *Cement (the OG stuff) is like. old as balls. its been used since the dawn of time and is like. water+ chalky rock stuff. it's got the structural integrity of a saltine cracker, so if you touch it wrong it crumbles, much like my self esteem.
Then the Roman came along, looked at *Cement, and thought "i wanna make it better" and then went and invented Concrete. The One True Big Deal OverPowered Concrete recipe used in Ancient Rome has unfortunately been lost to time. However- we know the basics. Cement + Water + Fly Ash + Aggregate (you might be thinking "hang on, cement is in concrete?" it always has been). So what are these things?
Cement: the basic ingredient. its cement.
Water: H2O preferably in liquid form
Fly Ash: well-done charcoal in a Supremely Fine Powder
Fine Aggregate: sand, essentially.
Coarse Aggregate: small-medium gravel
So you mix all of these things together and you get Concrete. Unlike the fragile cement, Concrete doesn't give a damn how you touch it unless you're a jackhammer. if cement is the crumbly saltine cracker, concrete is a graham cracker. Stronger, heavier, and overall better.
back to Ancient Rome.
So Concrete has been Invented and those Romans use it to build the Colosseum, because they could and no one could stop them. deep at the bottom of the Colosseum are concrete walls like 9 feet deep. Because their structural engineering can be summed up as "lets make it an arch" and that was it. It was the only way to hold up all those wall and different levels above.
You might now be thinking "hang on Carter, why don't other giant modern buildings not have 9' deep concrete walls. b/c thats ridiculous" It's because the Romans excelled at a lot of things, however they did not use rebar. rebar in concrete started in the 1800s, which led to the boom of Tall Buildings across the globe. Like the first Skyscraper was only 10? stories.
So now we have Concrete + Rebar. just about all Concrete you see in the wild has rebar in it. your sidewalk? rebar. Driveway? rebar. the in-ground pool? Rebar.
But in that below ground pool, its not just concrete. it's Concrete + Additives/Admixtures.
Additives/Admixtures: fancy schmancy chemically engineered compounds to change various things about the concrete, such as:
Concrete cures slower
Concrete handles the expansion/contraction of ice/water better
Concrete has a different Heat of Hydration temp
Colored Concrete (i've seen red for fire lines, aka STOP DIGGING)
Before I continue, i need to explain Heat of Hydration. when the cement, the primary ingredient in concrete, cures (goes from gloop to solid), it lets off heat. it gets hot. Spicy Cement. This is why when you get cement/concrete on your clothes or skin, you're supposed to wash it off ASAP. its corrosive AF and will give you a chemical burn. which like, no bueno. supremely no bueno.
So now you know of Cement and it's better, stronger child: Concrete.
Cement is the flour of the cake that is concrete. Flour + Water? sad saltine cracker. Flour + Water + Sugar? Graham Cracker. Flour + Water + Egg + Sugar? Cake.
You mix your cement with water and aggregates and fly ash and then you've got your concrete. to make it Extra Strong, pour it over rebar. And then wash off wherever it splashed.
Now my final note: in stores across the US you can find bags of lies called 'Quikcrete'. these are not concrete. these are cement. There is no aggregates. no admixtues or additives. Despite the wrong name its a decent product. holds up fence posts really well even when you have a dog that spent 11 years trying to become one with the fence.
Now next time someone complains about the 'cement' or whatnot being chipped, you can turn to them, the soul of an ancient roman engineer in your eyes, and go "its concrete"

part of me wants to warn people away from making their own fire pit skulls, because it’s that time of year again.
most of me figures if they’re dumb enough to think they can just use cheaper materials and slipshod one together, then it’s on them when their unintentional backyard grenade goes off.

Tonight we are drinking: • Hyde Park Swizzle •4 mint leaves •2oz dry gin •.75oz fresh lime •.75oz simple syrup •2 dash Angostura bitters •2 dash Peychaud’s bitters In shaker gently muddle 3 mint leaves. Add remaining ingredients (except for bitters) and dry shake. Pour into Collins glass. Fill glass with crushed ice. Add bitters and swizzle to chill. Garnish with mint sprig and serve with a straw. • OK, we needed this tasty cocktail after a day of tropical storm Ilsa! Not much wind, but the rain caused some panic in the basement a couple times. 2020年おすすめ新譜アルバムVol. 57:Boldy James / Sterling Toles「Manger on McNichols」
Tumblr media
二人の初合体は恐らくBoldy Jamesの11年のミックステープ「Trapper's Alley - Pros And Cons: The Quikcrete Ready Mixtape」収録の「Ground Beneath My Feet」で、以降は目立った共作は恐らく見られません。
1. Medusa
2. Welcome to 76
4. B.B. Butcher
Boldy James
8. Birth of Bold (the christening)

Hello! I'm trying to find ways to flesh out my Ball pythons enclosures and give them more enrichment/be more appealing for me to look at. What kind of foam are you using in the gecko setup your making? Is it safe for 60%+ humidity? Is it safe for a ball python at all?
For a snake like a ball python, you want to use dense polystyrene and thick layers of grout or quikcrete. In a more humid environment I’d recommend sealing the build with a product called Shields All. It’s expensive but really effective. If you can’t find that, a thin layer of clear silicone will work. Or you can use a non-toxic epoxy (I’m using Pond Armor on my turtle build)

Photo Challenge: Elemental
I remembered to sink the corner post deep, filled the hole with Quikcrete, and topped it off with dirt. Then double braced it to a clean ninety-degree angle. Most of us weren't born here; we built this home as an affirmation of a life we dreamed of, greater than hooves or feathers, than language or habit. But the elements are not tame; the sun passes behind clouds and winds blow icy rain in…

On Wednesday things had dried out enough that I was able to get out in the yard for a couple of hours. I was thrilled to be able to cut back the Knock-out roses in the back and cut back some of the perennials that I leave through the winter. Then on Thursday it rained. Again. All day! And now at 5 on Friday morning I can hear it raining. Hard. Yesterday the back yard was as wet as I’d ever seen it. It’s too dark yet to see how big the lake is this morning. I’m not going out to try and take pictures, so will do a post on something a couple of you have asked for — how to make a cement leaf casting.
When going through my photos I found some which show the process. The pictures don’t quite show all the steps, but it should be enough if you want to give this a shot. I’ll explain what’s missing. I wasn’t thinking about doing a post about the process at that time. There are lots of YouTube videos, too.
Don’t make the mistake I made the first time when I put my work board on the ground. Very hard on my back. The next time I put an old slab door on saw horses and covered it with plastic so I could work at waist height.
I used large leaves from my elephant ear bulbs. I’ve also done hostas.
2. Make a mound of sand that is a little larger than the leaf you are casting. I used builders sand because it was what I had. When I needed more I got play sand. I thought it was a little fine. You have to dampen the sand to get it to retain the mound shape.
In the photo below (with the hands) the sand mound should be bigger to support the pointed part of the leaf. You aren’t trying to make a flat casting and you won’t need gloves until you get to the concrete.
3. I used Quickcrete Vinyl concrete patcher that I got at Lowe’s. I mixed the concrete in my wheelbarrow with a hoe and at the end used my hands to get into the corners. Put on rubber gloves or you may burn your hands. I think you could mix the concrete in the plastic bucket it comes in but I didn’t try that. One bucket made two medium sized castings. It needs to be the consistency of peanut butter. If it’s too dry it will crack and if it’s too wet it will slump. Don’t forget to hose out your barrow,  hoe  and any other tools you’ve used when you are finished.
Take handsful of concrete and pat it over the leaf all the way to the edge. You can cut the stem off close to the leaf or leave it and have a hole in your casting. If you are making a bird bath you don’t want a hole. You want the thickness of the cement to be half an inch or less. Don’t make it too thin. Make the edges smooth with a putty knife. You can see that we made flat spots on the casting bottom so they would be more stable.
4. If your work area is in the sun, cover with some plastic while the concrete dries. In a couple of hours when the concrete begins to solidify you can do some more smoothing on the edges before the cement gets too hard.  After a day or two (when the concrete seems dry enough), lift the castings off the sand and remove the leaf. You’ll be able to tell when the casting is hard enough to move. On smaller castings it might just be a day. Sometimes I just turned them over and left the leaf on for awhile before pulling it off. If it dries in the veins use a small screwdriver or a wire brush to clean the casting.
5. I made the first ones in the fall and left them to cure in my garden shed through the winter because I wanted to use some craft paint on them to give them a little color and enhance the vein definition. You can use a file to smooth the edges if you want. As I went along I got better at smoothing the edges while the cement was still soft and since my work surface was waist height I could lift the plastic and check every couple of hours.
On the casting below you can see (left side) where I should have taken some of the overlap off before the concrete dried. Sometimes it’s hard to tell where the leaf stops. You don’t want the edges to be too thin.
6. Below my writing partner, Laura Ambler, is holding the casting I made for her after I had painted it. It filled the trunk of my honda. The other photo is my yoga buddy, Gail, who made the largest leaf casting of the bunch. It was forty inches long and took two bags of Quikcrete. It sat on the table for a week before we lifted it off the sand. On somthing this size you want the concrete (except for the edges) to be thicker. You don’t want it to break.
The past several years I’ve put my castings in the shed for the winter. This year I left a couple out to see what would happen. I made sure they were sitting off the ground and turned so water wouldn’t freeze in them.
Two years ago I taught thirteen women friends (one or two at a time) how to make leaf castings. Last year my workshop was closed! But I might get the itch again this year. If I do, I’ll take better photos of the process.
That’s my Six on Saturday, photos this week of making cement leaf castings. This meme was started by The Propogator, a UK gardener.  This is the link to the rules if you’d like to join in.
