Shangri-la frontier (the rabbits) Relationship headcanons
I’m writing after the latest episode of the anime I have watched, which is Ep. 8 and no manga so don’t expect too much. I haven’t found any headcanons yet so I made some. I hope you like it too 🥰
Emul
Tumblr media
🥕 Before you two start dating you will know every little part of the Rabituza. If you let her, she will tell you about everything there is to know while looking all happy (and adorable) and excited about it. She shows you all the tastiest food places and the shops with the best quality weapons and objects. Of course she introduces you to her younger brother Peatz who will sell you some good stuff.
🥕 Her dad- i mean boss will know who you are before you meet him. Emul has been talking about you so much. About your interests, what you like and don’t like, your family etc. How can she not talk about you? She loves you and you’re like the coolest and most amazing person she knows! You and her father is Emuls idols after all ❤
🥕 Emul is very creative with her nicknames and as fast she finds something new that she thinks suits you she goes with it. Pumpking”, “Pudding pie”, “Sweet carrot”, “Carrot cake”. But even so, she loves, LOVES your name the most so you will hear a combination of all of it.
🥕 Emul’s love language would be words of affirmation since she loves telling you how amazing you are. She doesn't hold back with the compliments either. “Y/n is that a new shirt? You look lovely in it!” “Y/n did you learn a new skill? You have trained so hard! I knew you could do it!! I’m so proud of you!!” And if you compliment her, she will be sooo happy and thinks she is so lucky to have you!
Vysache
Tumblr media
🍶 He often takes you out for a walk around the city. No servants, only you and him. He will sometimes take you with him when he goes outside of Rabituza. Show you and teach you what he knows about the outside world, and you teach him what you know. If you two happen to meet an enemy, Vyache would totally show off during the fight. Unless you want to fight, then he steps aside and gladly watches you.
🍶 Whenever you improve yourself or clear a difficult task you have been struggling with he’d always give you the “proud” look. That’s my girl/boy aura you know. “Good Job my love”.
🍶 When it comes to nicknames, he would go with the old fashioned ones. So he would call you the typical “Dear”, “My love”, “Sweetie”.
🍶 You know the little servant bunnies who follow Vyache around? Yeah. They serve you too. Giving you a nice massage with their cute little paws and serving you delicious food.
🍶 I think Vysache's love language would be quality time. He enjoys the time you spend together, no matter what you two are doing. He will memorize it and not take it for granted.
Thank you for reading! If liked, reblogs are very appreciated! :) Post made by @master-muffinn

I have only started blocking out the shapes and colours. Refinement will come later for each character. I tend to work in parts. Like I'll probably do Sunraku's mask first or maybe the skin, and then move on

Shangri-La Frontier Episode 4: A Trash Game Realignment of Elevated Tastes
Tumblr media
So, to no surprise, this episode is way lighter on action. Which can sometimes be a bit of a concern for viewers. Will it end up a wasted episode, will it cut corners and make things easy on itself? In both cases, that's a no for Shangri-La Frontier as it makes the most of its downtime to really set the stage for the game, giving me a lot to chat about!
First and foremost though, a little detail or two from the start of the episode. We got another bug shown. I know bugs are already associated with the Hizutome household, but I wonder if we'll continue being shown them as a sort of connection from the family to Sunraku's buggy game loving tendencies.
Tumblr media
Second, this really fun detail from the game store. On the one TV in the scene they actually bothered making a little video game demo to put on it. A very fun addition to add a bit more life and feel to the scene.
Tumblr media
Anyways, let's talk actual episode content. Right away they put focus on exploring Shangri-La Frontier outside of the game, and I think it's a really important piece to take a look at in this sort of context. I'm always big about VR game series taking a minute to exist outside of the game, so seeing stuff like this is really good.
Even better I feel is how they build the game up. Sunraku isn't the first to find Rabituza, which I think is really important in selling the world. It's existed for a hot minute, so people should have discovered things like it and shared that information online. It really creates the feeling of a fleshed out and lively world that Sunraku is taking part in.
Tumblr media
Back into the game though, the art in closeups in this episode are really just something else. The detail and shading on them is incredibly good, and is only further accentuated by the strong camera angles.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then there's the "best" part: the collar. I think it's really great for two reasons. First of all, it's effectively saying that Vysache "owns" Sunraku, but there's also its effects. Before that though, I really like that they snuck something creative in with the collar. It's an unequip-able item, so Sunraku's pretty outraged by it, but he did agree to it. That is, he agreed to the trigger that would equip the collar, so it's not like it was forced on him.
Anyways, the effect of the xp drop, I think it's a great idea. They're building Sunraku up to play a "shitty" game within Shangri-La Frontier effectively, and I think that's really awesome. It's not shitty by nature, like a lot of the game Sunraku plays, but it's shitty because of how he plays it. It's a really thoughtful approach to the concept of the series, and at each turn they find great ways to use it to their advantage.
Tumblr media
And the author gets that fighting an impossibly uphill battle can be a little monotonous, so they actually counterbalance the collar with Emul! Just really really smart decisions that put a really great level of awareness into the idea of game balance.
Tumblr media
And you know, there's been a lot of talk about Kusoge as of late, so it's great to see Sunraku get back to his roots as a way to establish a party around him. It just makes sense, and is a very fun way to stay true to Sunraku's ideals while providing strong backing for him in this video game world.
Also, goofy glitchy fights. It would have been fun to see them go all out with the idea, but I wouldn't say I'm disappointed.
Tumblr media
Getting into the back half of the episode, time sort of flies. There's some good humor thanks to layouts like this one, but for the most part it's talk about expanding the worldview of the viewer.
Tumblr media
And I mean, it has to be done at some point or another, so I think filling the gap between area bosses as Sunraku speedruns the early game is the most suitable spot for it. They do a good job of folding it into the natural flow of things and playing off of it, so I don't really have any complaints.
Well, that's a lie, I do have one complaint. They went and showed us such an insanely good looking area boss that I can't wait for next week's episode.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Even better is that, like the Ravenous Python, Sunraku has to face an uphill battle here due to his lack of preparation. Though instead of it being the hidden challenge of poison, this time it's the explicit challenge of being unable to run in a swamp. Just really great ideas that challenge Sunraku's playstyle directly rather than being mostly random obstacles.
Shangri-La Frontier is doing a hell of a lot to remind viewers that this is a video game, while all the while dragging them deeper and deeper into the wonders of its world. C2C is absolutely providing on all fronts for an effort that I could only imagine manga readers are loving at this moment. Really excited to see what they end up doing with the Mud Digger boss fight in the next episode!

Note
What if Emul invited Sunraku's party to her family Reunion.
Well, that-- Wait.
How big is Emul's family anyway? I mean, we've seen some of her sisters, and heard the names of some of her brothers, but...
It couldn't possibly be that...
The entirety of Rabituza...

A Review: Shangri-La Frontier Vol. 1
Tumblr media
Author: Katarina Illustrator: Ryosuke Fuji Publishers: Kodansha Comics Age Group: Older Teen Genre: Shonen Type: Manga
Content Warnings: Naked Hilarity
Spoilers ahead
Plot
Second-year high school student Rakuro Hizutome loves nothing more than finding so-called “trash games” and beating the crap out of them. When he decides to change things up by playing a new, god-tier VR game known as Shangri-La Frontier (aka SLF), he does what he does best: min-maxes, skips the prologue, and jumps straight into action! Rakuro may be a seasoned gamer, but a meeting with an old rival will change the fate of every SLF player forever.
Character Development
Rakuro (gamertag: Sunraku) is an interesting character. He loves trash games so when he plays SLF he can’t help but love the fluidity and lack of bugs. Though his luck is high, he’s got the worst luck you can imagine. He gets cursed by a Unique Mob: Lycagon. Which means, no clothes…good thing he can still wear his bird mask. Though… now he just looks like he’s a fetisher. He’s arrogant, gung-ho, and strategic. His play through of SLF is fun to read.
Emul is our spunky sidekick with cutesy british-esque linguistics. She’s an adorable bunny that’s not annoying and very helpful to Sunraku. She’s the daughter of “The Boss” of Rabituza, Vysache (my favorite character). She packs more of a punch than you’d think.
We get introduced to Katzo and Arthur Pencilgon/Knight during the light novel portions of the manga. It’s helpful to know these names as, if you’ve seen the TV series, they become a big deal in Sunraku’s play.
The characters each have their own unique personalities. I like that the NPCs that Sunraku comes across all have their own as well. It makes the game more immersive.
World-building
SLF is a medieval style world with long lost technology from The Age of Divinity. It’s very immersive not only in illustration but from the snippets of the forum pages we can read in the manga. We learn a lot of the world at the same time Sunraku does. This keeps the audience closely engaged in the game as much as Sunraku.
The times we aren’t in the SLF, we are in the contemporary world mostly containing Rakuro’s home and the gaming store.
Themes
Life is meant to be enjoyed so find your passion and pursue it relentlessly. There are many arguments that people come up with why that’s just not possible. In our day and age, what isn’t possible? The only thing that limits people is their thinking. If you can’t pursue it now, work towards it. Everything you do should be a stepping stone, so don’t give up.
Observations & Predictions
From what I’ve read and seen on the series, Sunraku is going to be a huge game changer for all of SLF. The gung-ho way that he adventures through SLF is quite fun to read. My hope is for more of this focus. I’m hoping he realizes there’s a girl (Rei-chan) in IRL that likes him. If not, there’s nothing lost in this series from not pursuing that route. Hopefully they can at least be friends that actually adventure together in SLF, though that hasn’t happened as of yet.
