Day #9: Dancing On My Own, Robyn (2010)

Man it really feels great (and flattering to one’s taste, and therefore feels great to one’s ego) to be sort of ahead of trends. I discovered this gem (and the rest of Robyn’s discography) when I was assigned to do a 2-page essay about Sweden in our geography class in college. I still remember that book – it had a landscape layout with glossy pages, and the book’s cover featured a couple belonging to the elite. There was a section about Swedish music and pop culture, and I saw photos of Ace of Base, Eagle-Eye Cherry, and Robyn, who with a severe, short, white hair attracted my homosexual tastes. Personally, the early 2010s were my best years. Not coincidentally: it was also my late teens and I was in college, the perfect place to expand your mind, try different styles and identities, experiment with everything, feel intense emotions for the first time.

It turned out that Dancing On My Own wasn’t the first Robyn song that I heard or knew about. So I used to watch The X-Factor UK, and its fifth series in 2008 remains a personal favorite of mine. One of the contestants I loved, Rachel Hylton, did a cover of With Every heartbeat for that season’s first love song. Response was lukewarm, but I loved the arrangement + the vocals and the fact that they chose a more upbeat song to perform. I remember downloading songs from Body Talk in a frenzied haze, and listening to them obsessively during my daily commute to school and during my daily commute when I interned at a senator’s office. I remember all the cool kids on the internet were listening to Robyn, and when she eventually blew up I had a smug satisfaction of listening to hear way earlier than the rest.

As with Bad Romance, this was also featured on Gossip Girl. I think it was used during a Chuck/Blair scene. Rewatching Robyn’s music video for this song, her physicality is still a breath-taker. She moves as if it’s on impulse. In 2015, The Cracked Podcast – I was listening to that podcast obsessively – featured her live performance of Call Your Girlfriend as an undiscovered gem, and the hosts made it a point that choreography made the performance. Long story short, this song is about longing and love (or something close to it) unrequited, a theme which will continue to follow me as I piece together my sexuality, and how it relates to my outside world.

What are your thoughts on z winning the fashion icon award? I’m really excited and I know a lot of other people are too, but I’ve definitely seen some that don’t agree. She is always talked about when it come to red carpets, even trending for events that she’s not attending such as the met gala this year. She’s currently the face of three large brands. Not to mention the way she and law have helped to push black photographers, make up and hair in the industry.

I know she’s young, but to say she has no influence just seems wild to me. It feels like people are constantly calling her a style icon but when she is named one there seems to be pushback. Or maybe that’s just a minority and I’m letting the stan in me get defensive lol.

There is a lot of chatter about it, which is interesting because it comes after the reports of an increase of sales for sequin dresses right after Zendaya wore one on the DUNE red carpet but I’m also genuinely surprised that she got the award now, instead of a few years from now, I’ve always seen her eventually being honored with this award.

I’m also in the team of people baffled at the CFDA continuing to ignore Lil’ Kim and Misa Hylton for this award because they are the DNA and Blueprint to a lot of the Pop Culture Fashion that we see today. Like C’MON CFDA stop playing, like seriously???

Do I believe that it’s deserved??? ABSOLUTELY! I have always saw her having a very interesting Style Evolution, and it happened. Designers love her and want to dress her, even model pieces after her. I don’t think there is anyone in Zendaya’s peer group that gets people excited to talking about fashion, and fashion moments in general the way that Zendaya does. The only other two that I can think of that gets the Fashion Gurls excited the same are Dua Lipa and Cardi B of course(which is also full circle because Kollin Carter used to assist for LAW very early on into Zendaya’s career), they are only other ones that consistently gives very exciting Fashion Moments.

There is also a debate about whether or not Zendaya’s size or her having a stylist plays a part into how her looks are perceived, I personally think that her level of taste plays more of a role into it than her size because there are plenty of girls in Hollywood that are her size with stylists that has nobody talking. Her looks with LAW Roach are consistent hits because their minds match, and also because she trusts him. Also every celebrity works with a stylist and a stylist team, John Q. Public does not know what Stylists do day-to-day for their clients, and if they did, they would know that a working Celebrity with a very busy schedule has no time to do all that shit nor do they have direct ties to any of these Fashion Houses, this is why they utilize stylists in the first place because they have the connects to make it happen.

There are a number of emerging design talents whose careers saw a huge boost after having the right moment with Zendaya. Also the conversation about how Zendaya advocates for Black Creatives to get jobs they normally wouldn’t, there are very few of them working for actors(except for Hairstylists), but now there has been an increase of them in the past few years. John Q. Public are paying attention to Zendaya’s team because she puts them in the spotlight, there wasn’t this much level of attention on creative teams before even when Rachel Zoe had her show. Those things should be noted.

Mixed by Daniel Hylton-Nuamah from Atlas Artists, who has worked with artists such as Karl Benjamin, Aziya and Rachel Chinouriri, Amethyst’s new single 'Can't Let Go' will certainly leave you wanting more.

With its sultry and enticing vocals, old school R&B production, and a more than funky bassline it’s got all the elements that will make you keep pressing repeat. Through winning a competition with Hypertribe, Amethyst was lucky enough to get to work with Joy Crookes as her mentor who helped her develop her production skills and work with her on this particular song.

With an EP due for release early next year and a few more singles on the way, we can certainly expect a lot from this young rising star. Amethyst’s beautiful vocals combined with her unique sound and distinctive look certainly makes her one to watch.

We had a chat with the songstress all about her influences, 'Can't Let Go', what's next for her and more. Read the Q&A below.

Hi Amethyst! How are you? For anyone discovering you here for the first time, how would you describe your sound and your mission as an artist?

"Hi Helen, I’m great thank you riding high from my debut release and all the love it’s getting, it’s been kind of overwhelming! If I was to describe my sound I would say it would be a mix of old school jazzy vocals mixed with modern R&B/neo-soul production. I’m inspired by so many genres so you will probably hear little hints to other genres in there somewhere! My mission is to make people happy and have a good time really with my music. I want to write songs that people can connect with from my own experience but also from what friends and family members have gone through. It’s about taken that person to another place for 3 minutes and forget about their worries or stresses."

What was it that led you to make music? Who were you influenced by growing up?

"So my parents got me piano and violin lessons from the age of 3, but I had always been surrounded by music. I would listen to classical and soca music on the way to school with my dad (very different genres I know, but I think that helped open my mind to different possibilities with music and led me on to other things). I was singing from as young as I can remember, I started by just singing along to Disney Soundtracks in my living, which then progressed to Alicia Keys, Beyonce, as I got older and when I went to uni I then was introduced less mainstream pop artists which I take a lot of influence from such as Ella Fitzgerald, Jazmine Sullivan and Stevie Wonder and Gregory Porter."

You've just released your debut track 'Can't Let Go'. What was the inspiration behind the song and what do you hope listeners take away from it?

"With this track I wanted to flip the script on the typically love story of “girl meets boy, falls madly in love with him and then he breaks her heart”. In simple terms, this song is about someone who knows that what they can bring to the table sexually, in a relationship or both is miles better than what their lover/partner has ever received. They know that their love is better than anyone else’s and the name Can’t Let Go could be taken literally or metaphorically. I’m basically bragging in the track “I know you can’t let go and I love that”. By knowing that gives them more pleasure and confidence within themselves. I wanted to empower people, and especially women to love their bodies, know their worth and not be afraid to be confident and state what they want. I know lots of women who long for that feeling of being adored and almost worshipped, whether that’s in the bedroom or in the relationship as a whole. I want “Can’t Let Go” to be that song that you can play when you’re looking at yourself in the mirror getting ready to go out with your friends, on a date or just walking down the street and just be like “yeah I’m worthy, I love my body, I’m confident in who I am and I don’t have to shrink for someone else”."

You have been mentored by Joy Crookes and also worked on 'Can't Let Go' with Daniel Hylton-Nuamah. What have you taken from those experiences?

"Getting to be mentored by Joy was such an incredible experience and I’m so lucky to have gotten that opportunity. She taught me so much about production and how to believe more in myself not only as an artist but a producer as well. She is always there if I need her and just gives me the best advice for the music industry in general! Working with Dan is amazing! We only started working together a few months ago, but he just totally gets what I’m after never complains and really brought “Can’t Let Go” to the next level with his add prod."

Finally, what else is next for you? We hear you have an EP coming next year? What can you tell us about that?

"Yes so my debut EP is due to be released early next year and I can’t wait for you all to hear it. I have another two singles on their way before that, one sooner than you think! The EP is a real story of my love life over the past couple of years and you’ll be sure to hear more catchy hooks and melodies as well as some unexpected sounds from me as well."

X LAST TIME ON SPELLBOUND…?

Last time we saw Blake Lawson, he was stuck in a love pentagon with Juliette, Lindsay, Natasha, and Samantha. Eventually Blake ended up choosing and they started a relationship. Then in comes, Blake’s secret sister, Spencer. She hated Jules because of Blake. She believed she had something to do with Blake’s avoidance, but in reality, he just didn’t want to talk to her. Is he still friends with Natasha? With Samantha? What about Lindsay? Did the two solve their issues? Has he welcomed Spencer into his heart? Is he still happy with Juliette? Does that storyline even still exist?

X HI, MY NAME IS

Blake Michael Lawson was born on February 12th in Falls Church, Virginia to Sarah and Michael. He has brown/black hair, blue eyes, and is six feet three inches. As far as Blake knows, his mother Sarah and father Michael are not of magical lineage. Of course, that is only what Blake thinks he knows. He has one sibling named Spencer Hylton, but he did not know about her until Headmaster Burke notified him of her arrival.

He lived in Virginia for a majority of his life before his parents up and moved to Los Angeles. He’s been at Spellbound since his Freshman year. He’s been a Vampire since he was first changed at 13 years old by some unknown person. Not knowing what he was, he ended up killing someone by draining them completely of their blood. He has been up and down ever since.

Returning for his final year at Spellbound Academy, Blake Lawson was absolutely certain that he was not going to let anyone close to his heart especially since what happened last year. He had been in a secret relationship with Lindsay McKenzie. He had been completely in love with her when things had ended with a single, stupid argument. After that, he decided to never let people close enough to get in. Despite Blake’s attempts to keep people away from him, he finds that he does have a few people that he can call his close friends. He is known for being slightly vicious when provoked and he normally just does whatever he wants to do.

New or old, you’ve probably heard of the infamous Blake Lawson. He’s definitely not your average, run-of-the-mill type of guy. There are many sides to Blake Lawson; the slightly nice one with a tough love personality or the murderous, dangerous Vampiric side of him that does not only come out at night. You should consider yourself lucky if he considers showing you the real one.

With his wit, you would have to be pretty thick-skinned to not get offended so easily around him. Many people do not believe that this is his actual “good” side, but considering the scarier alternative, they better believe it. He’s pretty nice during the day, but his wit can make him seem like a jerk. By night, he’s out on the town hunting his prey, so be careful if you go out at night. You never know who may be watching. He loves to play “games” like Cat and Mouse. He won’t hesitate to hurt you if you say something or do something he doesn’t like. He’s also the type that shows no remorse at all if he kills, not even if he changes them.

ACADEMY NOMINATIONS

WASHINGTON

U.S. Sens. Rob Portman, R-Cincinnati, and Sherrod Brown, D-Cleveland, encouraged Ohio high-school students interested in 2019 admission to U.S. Military Service Academies to apply to each senator’s office for a congressional nomination.

Each year, Portman and Brown nominate up to 10 students for each service academy: The Air Force Academy, the Naval Academy, the Military Academy at West Point and the Merchant Marine Academy.

Interested students who meet eligibility requirements should send their completed application packet to Portman’s Columbus office and to Brown’s Cleveland office no later than Sept. 21. The application process is time-intensive. Applicants should plan well in advance.

Air Force 2nd Lt. Eric A. Wolf, a native of Girard, recently was awarded his Combat Systems Officer wings during a ceremony at the Naval Air Station in Pensacola, Fla.

Attending the ceremony were his parents, Ruth and Tony Wolf of Girard; his sisters, Rachel Wolf and her friend, Mike Reilman, and Jessica and Matt Hylton; ; Eric’s aunt and uncle, Rita and Rob MacIntosh; and Eric’s girlfriend, Kylie, who presented his wings.

Wolf’s next assignments are survival training and completion of navigational training at Little Rock Air Force Base, after which he will be stationed at the 910th Airlift Wing at Youngstown Air Reserve Station in Vienna.

DEPLOYED

Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class David Lapin, a 2012 Salem High School graduate and Salem native, is serving aboard the guided-missile destroyer USS Carney participating in a North Atlantic Treaty Organization ballistic- missile defense mission in Rota Spain.

Lapin is an interior communications electrician, responsible for maintaining telephone, fire and flooding alarms, playing movies, soldering and troubleshooting, aboard one of the four advanced warships forward-deployed to Rota. Guided-missile destroyers are warships that provide multimission offensive and defensive capabilities.

By serving in the Navy, Lapin is continuing a family tradition.

“My dad, uncles and grandpa all served in the military,” Lapin said. “They influenced my decision to join by being good men. I figured if I joined maybe some of that would rub off on me.”

VOLUNTEER

KINSMAN

Kinsman native, Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Chad Williams, a yeoman serving with Navy Talent Group Acquisition Group Minneapolis, recently volunteered for the Greater Plains Food Bank during Fargo-Moorhead Metro Navy Week.

Williams is the social media manager and public-affairs officer responsible for creating relevancy in Navy awareness in all social media platforms and other media outlets. Additionally, he is the recruiter for his command and visits communities and schools to explain employment and training opportunities in the Navy.

Williams, who has four years of prior active duty service, joined the New Orleans Police Department in 2014 and served until selected for recruiting duty in Minneapolis.

Williams has military ties with family members who have previously served and is honored to carry on the family tradition.

“Both grandparents served in the military,” he said. “One was in the Marine Corps and the other was in the Navy. My wife and brother are in the Navy, and my father-in-law retired from the Navy as a master chief petty officer after serving for 32 years. It’s an honor to follow in their footsteps,” Williams said.”

Williams said his proudest accomplishment serving in the Navy is receiving the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal for participation in his first of 50 funeral honor ceremonies presenting the U.S. flag to the next of kin.
