One of my overseers alerted me to this "sopping wet beast", who has taken it upon himself to try and swim over to the nearby continent. If it weren't for my networking with the local scavenger population, he would have ended up dead.
Whoever convinced him to try and do this, please be more careful. I'm very dissapointed in you all. Do better.

I hate when Peter and Mary Jane's relationship is reduced to "nerd got the hot girl". It shows that even though I have a special place in my heart for the Raimi films (they are what got me into Peter Parker before the comics); they have, in some ways even more than the MCU, have done damage to the public perception of Peter Parker in being viewed as a white nerd power fantasy. What are your thoughts, Traincat?
On the one hand, I understand why the Raimi films made the choices they did with Peter and MJ's characterization and relationship. I'm not the world's biggest fan of the Raimi movies (I think they're fine, they just don't really do anything for me) but I can recognize that they're well put together and tell a coherent, complete story -- and to do that with Spider-Man required a certain amount of compressing. Spider-Man comics are a soap opera; they're a sprawling story with a huge cast and interweaving plotlines and relationships. You can't really do that in a two hour movie, so you have to make cuts somewhere. And I do think Raimi did a really good job presenting his version of Spider-Man, and obviously it resonated with a lot of people. It's just not my version of Spider-Man, and the simplification of both Peter and Mary Jane as characters and of their dynamic is a big part of that.
(ASM #257)
For example, I understand the decision to make both Peter and the audience immediately aware of MJ's abusive home life, but I don't find it as compelling as the comics, where Mary Jane, like Peter, wears a mask -- she's the fun-loving party girl without a care in the world, and Peter falls for it entirely. Meanwhile, Peter thinks he's getting away with everything and that no one knows he's Spider-Man, but Mary Jane discovered it years ago, before Peter even knew who she was, and she hid that information from him for years.
Mary Jane's an inversion of the "girl next door." She doesn't even really live next door! Her aunt lives next door; MJ ran away from home (if you can call having to constantly move between relatives home) and slept at the Y so she'd have money for eyeliner. Initially, Peter doesn't even want to meet her because he thinks she'll be ugly -- Aunt May told him she had a "great personality," after all. (Kill him.) Also, unlike Raimi's Peter, 616 Peter already has a love life. He falls head over heels for JJJ's pretty secretary, Betty Brant, and she reciprocates, while his blonde rich girl classmate Liz Allan also schemes to get Peter's attention all for herself. (Spider-Man! It's love triangles all the way down.) Johnny Storm's girlfriend at the time, Dorrie Evans, also thinks Peter is cute and smart, and once he gets to college, Peter and Gwen Stacy almost immediately begin a mildly antagonistic mutual attraction. So it's not like he's lived next to MJ all his life and he's been in love with her the whole time, this unattainable beautiful girl to his sad nerd. 616 Peter has girls fighting over him.
(ASM #15 and ASM #25)
So that there's already a romantic history is very important, I think -- MJ isn't Peter's first love, and in a way that grounds the relationship. He's even put off by her at first, after his initial attraction. She's beautiful and vivacious, but he finds her flighty, and he's more invested in Gwen because of that. (Hate that I have to say this but I'm not interested in discussing whether MJ or Gwen is "better" for Peter. I ship both, as well as GwenMJ, and I think they're both interesting and compelling.)
(ASM #96 and #97) He finds the fact that she flirts with him while she's also seeing Harry to be actively off putting. It's not love at first sight for him. (It's, debatably, terror at first sight for her.)
(ASM #258) Unlike Raimi's depiction, it's not Spider-Man that holds the attraction for Mary Jane. She's not intrigued by the masked man who kisses her in the rain. Peter being Spider-Man terrifies her, and it's something she'll struggle with on and off throughout their relationship. One of the things I really love about 616 Spider-Man is that all the character relationships feel realistic. People get scared, they get messy, they hurt each other and apologize and run away and come back. Mary Jane's a traumatized person. She's had an abusive childhood, she's grieving, she's using this persona as a shield, and Peter falls for it, because Peter isn't looking beneath the exterior. He doesn't know how to do that with her yet. He has to learn.
(ASM #292) And so does Mary Jane, who keeps everything locked up so tightly inside of her. Incredibly funny sidenote: I cannot stress enough how much they were not in a serious relationship before Peter proposed the second time. They were not seriously dating and he just went "let's get married." I love it.
(And before some nerd yells at me, yes, they had previously been in a serious relationship, but they were not at the time of this proposal.)
And none of this is to say Raimi Peter and MJ are bad characters. They're just a different adaptation, for a wildly different form of media where brevity is needed, as opposed to the serialized nature of comics. Stuff that works in comics doesn't necessarily work in movies, and vice versa. But I do think the shift in format kind of allowed this idea of Peter the Nerd/MJ the Popular Girl to flourish in public consciousness, and that then evolved on itself. I don't think Raimi's entirely at fault so much as the tendency to see like, a vaguely schlubby or unassuming white guy (Raimi's styling choice on Peter) and a pretty girl and apply those labels to it. I also don't think the Raimi's more gentile approach to Peter helped, either. (It should be noted that, as goyish as his Peter comes off, Raimi himself is Jewish.)
I think the tendency that a lot of people have to use Peter as a self-insert is ultimately the problem, and that while the Raimi movies may be a gateway for a lot of young (and not so young) white nerds to do that, the tendency comes from within, it doesn't originate on the screen. "Peter Parker is an everyman" and "Peter Parker is just like you" combine with "I deserve to get with the hottest girl" and that becomes the problem. It always circles back to the fact that a lot of people, even people who proclaim themselves to be diehard Spider-Man fans, don't consider Peter to be an actual character, with well defined personality traits that they may not personally share. The same with Mary Jane -- she's Spider-Man's Love Interest, and Spider-Man's love interest just has to be a beautiful redheaded supermodel who is in love with him. She doesn't have to be a person with her own personality and backstory. And I find it hard to entirely blame Raimi for that because, even though they're not my picks for Peter and MJ characterization, those characters do have their own personalities and traits. Am I just blaming the fandom? I don't know, maybe. It's a complicated situation. When does a character get so famous that they stop being their own character? When do they become this image that fans can mold into whoever they want him to be? A sad average nerd power fantasy? A perpetual teenager, the Avengers baby? Something else? When does Spider-Man stop being Spider-Man?
It's something I think about a lot. I don't have a concrete answer.
Anyway, it's not really relevant, but as iconic as the upside down Spider-Man kiss has become, I personally prefer Peter and MJ's first kiss in the comics.
(ASM #143) "And Peter Parker laughs."

Grand Prix Star Remembers Those Who Schooled Him
July 7, 2007 Two men who guided Lewis Hamilton on his way to the top of formula one, and why this "incredible guy" hasn't forgotten them.
One of the first things Lewis Hamilton did when he arrived at Magny-Cours for the French Grand Prix last weekend was to think of the past rather than his exciting future. Hamilton took the trouble to seek out the paddock set aside for the support races - usually alien territory for anyone inhabiting the lofty world of Formula One - and visit two of the small teams responsible for his schooling.
'That was so typical of Lewis,' says John Booth, the owner of the Manor Motorsport Formula Three team. 'There he was, facing a big weekend, leading the F1 championship, and he took time to come and have a chat.'
Booth, a former competitor on the British club scene, has had a number of promising drivers through his hands since becoming a very successful team owner. Hamilton moved from karts to race for Booth in Formula Renault and then F3.
'McLaren asked us to give Lewis a test in our Formula Renault car,' says Booth. 'He had never driven a racing car before - not even a road car because he was only 16 - and he crashed after a couple of laps. That was almost to be expected and the thing that really impressed me was, when the lads put the car back together again, he went back out and immediately went very quickly. The accident hadn't fazed him at all.'
Hamilton was the clear favourite to win the Formula Renault title in his second season with the Yorkshire-based team. 'We'd been quickest in the pre-season test,' says Booth. 'But things went awry at the first race: he got taken off by a backmarker. He went for three races without winning, which was a surprise to us, to say the least. Then we went to Silverstone. He was lying fifth, on slicks, and it rained. He came through and won quite comfortably. That was it. He just clicked, his confidence was up and I don't think he was beaten again for the rest of that season.
'When we moved into F3, we didn't have the most competitive car. He won a couple of races but that must have been quite difficult for Lewis because he has this amazing desire to win. But, even when the going is difficult, you won't have a spat or a tantrum.
'Lewis has this natural way which gets everyone on side. Ayrton Senna would have the same aim, but be manipulative. When we were racing together, Ayrton was a very pleasant young man but he'd be quite cold about it. He would say, "I will do this, and I will get the mechanics on my side." But, with Lewis, you would regularly see him bouncing about with a smile on his face. That's the way he's always been.
'It's been wonderful to see him maturing. A lot of drivers have promise but not all of them develop and mature. Lewis has done that but the way he has become mistake-free in F1 is the thing that has impressed me most.'
For 2005, Hamilton moved to ASM, a rival team in the European F3 series, before stepping up to GP2 with ASM's sister team, ART Grand Prix, in 2006. He won 15 F3 races and championships in both categories. Frederic Vasseur is co-owner of ASM.
'I first met Lewis in 2004,' says Vasseur. 'It was obvious that he was a natural but also very dedicated. All drivers say that their ambition is to be world champion but very few actually focus on doing it. Lewis is one of the few. He is able to motivate the team because he is friendly with everyone. And he is completely honest with himself. If he qualified badly, he would say, "I did a poor job. The car is fine. Don't change it. It's my fault." That makes such a difference because, if a driver blames his car, you can waste so much time changing it and going off in the wrong direction.
'There were many very impressive drives from Lewis when he was with us. I remember particularly a few from GP2 last year. Silverstone [when Hamilton overtook two cars with a single move] was a fantastic moment for me. And in Turkey, when he had spun to the back of the field, his comeback was incredible. And yet he did not take any big risks. Usually when a driver is coming back from something like that, he passes everyone - and then crashes. Lewis was using his brain, thinking of the championship and picking off the other drivers one by one. At the Nurburgring, when it started raining and everyone was on slicks, Lewis was two to three seconds a lap faster than the others. I got on the radio and said, "Calm down". He replied, "OK, it's not a problem." It just came so easy to him. At the pit wall during a race, I was never nervous about him.
'He was having a great fight with his team-mate, Alexandre Premat, in Barcelona. Premat hit Hamilton and sent his car into a spin on the last lap and yet he congratulated Alex on the podium. "Alex is not the problem," he said. "The problem was my start." Meaning that if he had made a better start, the problem would not have arisen. That's Lewis. An incredible guy.'

haikyuu + musical theatre boys
hq characters & what they’d be like as musical theatre boys - what they’re good at, what kind of shows they book, how they are to work with, roles they’d play, etc. | starring: sugawara, oikawa, bokuto, kuroo, tendou (+ tsukishima, kenma, akaashi)
for weeks my head has been full of hq!MT boys, inspired by over a decade of being a theatre kid, and @karasimpno has only enabled my debauchery. these are just a few of my faves, but i have more theatre boys where this came from so if this doesn’t flop maybe i will post more hehe
PART 2
tw swearing, musical theatre references, oikawa slander
SUGAWARA [tenor] this bitch is SO talented it should be illegal and he books like crazy. nothing like a pretty soft boi with the voice of an angel in musical theatre <3 not really a dancer but moves very well, also can act the house down like you think he’s this basic MT boy but then it turns out this mf has range and is not afraid to use it. will go from playing the sweetest, most charming leading man to a complex, terrifying villain, and the whiplash will make you fall in love with him. a dream to work with, obviously. very strong with classical text as well. his ability is frankly terrifying and far too powerful. the type of boy you cold read with once at a callback and never see again, but playing opposite him for those 2 minutes is enough to make you think about him for the rest of your life
lucas in the addams family, anthony in sweeney todd, the princeton/rod or nicky/trekkie/bad idea bear track in avenue Q, the emcee in cabaret PLS
OIKAWA [tenor] let’s be real oikawa already has an MT personality and it’s the worst kind. he thinks he’s rachel berry but really he’s kurt. he still books though bc he’s pretty and sings like an angel~ he can move really well and his jazz/MT style dancing is very strong, can also tap a little but it’s like barely enough to get by. his acting is kinda mediocre but his stage presence is out of this world and he’s hot so it doesn’t rlly matter, he stays booking leading men & disney princes left and right. truly is very talented at what he does, he’s just so annoying about it and constantly fronting all these skills he does not have, like he keeps trying to put leading lady songs in his book in their original key which is just.... not what those pipes are built for girl. bringing a whole new meaning to the nickname “flattykawa”
fiyero in wicked, pippin in pippin, conrad in bye bye birdie, aaron samuels in mean girls, joseph in joseph & the amazing technicolor dreamcoat, just all the basic mt boy shit
BOKUTO [baritone, tenor, everything in between, HIS RANGE] an absolute star. all-around amazing dancer (those muscles aren’t just for show babyyy) but especially tap and partnering (imagine him just lifting u.. god) powerhouse vocals across the board, his diaphragm is insane. he’s the type of MT who is always yelling even when they aren’t on stage, not even aware of it he’s just loud asf. always spitting everywhere too. no one is safe. acting is probably his weakest point just bc he doesn’t have a lot of versatility style-wise, but in no way is he bad at it i meannnnn have u seen how expressive and energetic that man is?? he does literally any golden age musical comedy leading man soooo well and is a blast to work with, such posi vibes & the character choices his himbo brain comes up with are so silly they’re genius
don lockwood in singin in the rain, gabey in on the town, bobby in crazy for you, jimmy in nice work if you can get it, robert in drowsy chaperone, will in oklahoma!
KUROO [baritenor] one of those fuckers who started doing theatre by accident, and immediately started booking out the wazoo with no training because he’s naturally talented and hot. i hate him so much. has that “idgaf i don’t have to try” aura about him, but his work ethic is actually?? really good??? once he starts learning more he really does put the work in. has that feeling of ease in his stage presence & good instincts that make up for his lack of training, plus his vocals have no right sounding that good on their own wtf. fucker thinks he’s frank sinatra, and honestly, it’s criminal how good he is at golden age material when most of what he books is contemporary bc of his dumb hair he’s not exactly a dancer but like…. bitch can move. plus he’s got body so that helps him a lot. mostly books leads anyway because that’s just how it goes when ur a hotboy with charm and talent. also he can fieRCE classical text??!?? (hint: it’s bc he’s a nerd) just stop being talented already jesus
melchior in spring awakening, sky masterson in guys & dolls, demetrius in midsummer, BENEDICK IN MUCH ADO PLS I NEED IT FOR MY HEALTH
TENDOU [countertenor] kicks ass at everything like he’s so talented and so versatile. vocals are insane, he has mad range and can do any number of character voices/impressions/dialects/what have you. his falsetto is unmatched (nice try flattykawa). we been knew his instincts are killer - character acting, comedy, improv, clown, mime, devised/alt theatre, contemporary MT, golden age MT, classical text you name it he can slay it all. his resume is so chaotic. he can body a super intense scene too, i feel like he trained in meisner & got traumatized from it and for a while he had an issue with getting too into character & doing crazy shit bc it was “method,” but eventually learned better<3 excellent mover, used to be a trina ballerina so his technique always shocks people even though he’s been out of practice for a long time (the dance world can be toxic and he was over it, so he yeeted all the way out of there a while ago). all around a wild human being with the ability to transform into numerous other wild human beings, creatures, abstract concepts, etc.
beetlejuice in beetlejuice, almost any track in cats but especially mungojerrie, mary sunshine in chicago, the porter in macbeth, CALIBAN IN THE TEMPEST PLEASEPLEASRPKEASE
----------------------
+BONUS: NOT MTs
characters who have zero MT energy but still fit elsewhere in the theatre world:
TSUKKI is a sound tech who is mean to performers esp during sound check, has a particular vitriol against MTs (except yamaguchi)
KENMA is an ASM who rarely gives a fuck, also does lighting & projection design. doesn’t hate MTs like tsukki, but their energy is usually a lot for him so he tends to avoid
AKAASHI is a playwright & dramaturg, but he used to act and can recite shakespeare on a dime, sonnets, soliloquys, whatever ur heart desires <3 may also play an instrument and sometimes writes lil songs but he doesn’t flex them bc he’s shy bby

No September Patch for Sims 4
Since EA won't be fixing any of their exception-creating errors this month, it seems like a good time for a Damage Control post. If you're the type to be curious about what's in an error file, here are a few details on some of the things you might see.
The worst EA error most people have run into that we've seen lately on Deaderpool's Discord has been coming from build buy, since the 1.45 patch in August. It's a repeating error that can lock up your game, as it generates a 3+ MB lastException file in /Sims 4. (Just to make things more interesting, there are also a Cat and a Dog version of the same error.)
Look near the beginning of the error for this:
<desyncdata>Exception in Sim Timeline: Exception resuming Element (RuntimeError: ASM Stand_Idle is being called repeatedly with a zero-length duration.
There isn't a fix for it, but switching out to Manage Worlds and back can temporarily stop it. One trick that MIGHT help is to move all your household members outside the "grid" (editable area) before going into build buy.
There is a report for it on EA's Answers Headquarters site. If you're a proactive sort, and would like to add to the thread, please go click "Me Too" on the report, here:
https://answers.ea.com/t5/Bug-Reports/Build-Mode-Causes-a-LOT-of-Last-Exceptions/m-p/6956770#M69956
While you're there, browse around. There are 2 pages of reported issues, maybe you'll see other things you've been wondering "Game or mod?" about. (Knowledge is Power.)
Other things we've seen often are errors with holidays, decorations, and umbrellas. Several different issues, especially if it's raining. If you see these kinds of errors, drop by Deaderpool's Discord and let us take a look at your lastException.txt file.
The card tables have been appearing in errors more recently, also. Protip: it's best not to have any food/drink items in inventory, before sitting down to play cards. The game tries to have sims play game and eat/drink at the same time if they do, and without three hands to work with, it never turns out well. Not-so-protip: I'd sell the table and get them some other thing to play with, until that gets resolved by EA.
If you look at an error and see Gardening Quality, that's because "clear" is currently broken for the yard sale table and family bulletin board. There's no fix for the yard sale table, but LittleMsSam has a mod to fix the Family Board. Also be sure to check out her other mods!
Anytime you have questions, come see us on Deaderpool's Discord. We don't have all the answers, but we do have several resources, and we can usually steer players back toward an error-free game.

Hey, what do you make of Peter following Gwen around after their breakup in TASM2?
Okay, this is a tough one because, like, I don't want to be like, yay stalking, but like, in the specific context of this scene, I'm gonna be a little bit like that. Not real life stalking, before someone comes into my inbox like, "Traincat, are you glorifying stalking?" I'm not! I've been followed for multiple blocks in NYC on several different occasions so believe me I know this behavior, in real life, is not excusable. But we're talking about a fictional character in a movie so I think it depends on what we mean when you say what do I make of it. I'm going to be talking about it purely in terms of how I'm judging most Spider-Man adaptations, which is on a scale of how true I feel they are to the original comics, not on a 1:1 adaptation ratio but on whether or not I feel they captured they spirit of the series, setting, and character.
So I have to say that I think it's a good scene because I think it's ultimately very in character for Peter. I also think it's an interesting scene because while the films are primarily through Peter's perspective -- we know his intentions while he's following Gwen around are benevolent, if overbearing -- it also allows the audience enough room to step back and to see that he's a flawed character. Which I think is one of the problems some Spider-Man fans have with The Amazing Spider-Man series: it presents Peter as a flawed hero. Prime example? He's kind of stalking his ex-girlfriend.
Do I think this is objectively great behavior from anyone? No, and I don't think we're necessarily supposed to approve of his actions. I really don't think TASM's goal was to make us agree with everything Peter does. On the other hand, do I think it is in fact hugely in character for Peter? Listen. Peter Parker's a little bit of a stalker.

(Daily Bugle #2)
(ASM Annual #42)
(ASM #596)
Don't bug your friends and family. I mean, unless your friends and family are constantly being kidnapped by supervillains. Then I guess it's like "find my iPhone."
One of the things I've talked about with Peter in terms of how he's a flawed character -- and I very much think that he is and that that's a good thing -- is that he can be controlling. It's the flipside of the responsibility: because Peter has more power than other people in his life, he assumes responsibility for them, whether they like it or not. This is, from an objective point of view, some real machismo bullshit, but with a fictional character as well-developed as Spider-Man, I think it's an interesting character note that leads to potentially interesting friction between him and his supporting cast. TASM's Peter follows this same general path; although I don't think he's a 1:1 adaptation of 616 Peter, I would say he's essentially assembled of all the same parts. And that includes his tendency to make decisions for other people.
I've seen the bit where he's following Gwen brought up a lot, and I'm not saying it shouldn't be, but what I find interesting is that Peter's behavior immediately before it in the movie is almost never dissected in the same way. When we pick up with him at the beginning of the movie, he is controlling towards Gwen. We know in the gap between The Amazing Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 that they've had an on and off again relationship, with several breakups -- all, it's implied, facilitated by him, because he feels guilty over her father's death and George Stacy's last words, which asked him to promise to leave Gwen alone. (I have a different post about how it's interesting that the audience seems to side with Peter and agree that he should listen to George's desires for him to leave Gwen alone instead of Gwen's desires for Peter to be with her here, but it's a little off topic for this particular discussion.) This follows the ending of the first movie, where Peter breaks up with Gwen and then appears to get back together with her at the last moment. It's all Peter's decision, on his own, made largely if not entirely without Gwen's input. He certainly knows her feelings, it's just that they don't actually factor into his decision making when we pick up at the beginning of the movie. And that's a bad thing and I don't think, at least from my perspective, the audience is supposed to agree with him -- not because they want Peter and Gwen to be together, either, but because Peter is in the wrong.
Which is why I think the "I break up with you" scene is really interesting -- from the way Peter continually talks over Gwen -- his loudly going "wait, WAIT" over her while she's trying to express her side -- to the way Gwen wrests back control by breaking up with him and that breakup sticking for the majority of the movie. Which leads us into the montage scene where Peter's swinging around New York, including the clip where he's following Gwen from the rooftops. The viewer knows why he's doing it -- because he wants to make sure she's safe, but also because he wants to be able to see her on his own terms, without letting her have that control. The flipside of great responsibility is great control issues.
I'm going to say something potentially controversial, but I think some of the pushback against The Amazing Spider-Man franchise is that they're Girl Movies. They're the chick flicks of the superhero set. Look at the set up of the first kiss compared to Raimi's Spider-Man -- he doesn't shed his shy public persona to manfully rescue the damsel in distress from thugs while the rain pours down around them and she isn't so overcome that she has to kiss him upside down. (Look, it's an iconic kiss scene! I value it for its contributions of the pop culture landscape! But the cold pouring rain does conveniently provide the audience with a little PG-13 Heroine Nipple Action.) Instead it happens on Gwen's rooftop after Peter gets done arguing with her dad about politics at The World's Most Awkward Family Dinner. If anyone gets a little PG-13 nipple action, it's Peter when he has to shuck his shirt so Gwen can tenderly wipe down his gross lizard sewer wounds while she wears a pristine white nightgown. I've mentioned before that I don't think "superhero" shouldn't really be viewed as a genre in and of itself when we're judging what makes a superhero movie "good" because most superhero films are action films mixed with another genre -- sci-fi, Western, war movies, and then there's The Amazing Spider-Man/2, which are romances. They're the Twilight of superhero films. That's why Andrew Garfield gets to have such great hair. And that's why they fall back on tropes like "the hero staring longingly at the love of his life from far away, knowing He Can Never Be With Her." Cue the music. And it works, because Spider-Man is, essentially, a romantic hero, with all the pros and cons that come with that. Is it problematic? I mean, yeah, if we're supposed to agree that Peter's in the right, which I would argue is debatable, even if Gwen, when they get back together, seems to get over him following her really quick. Romantic stalking is a well established trope -- and whether or not it should be or whether it glorifies abusive behavior is a related but different conversation to viewing this scene on its own, through my preferred lens of: does this scene belong in a Spider-Man movie?
Yeah, because, and I say this extremely lovingly, he sucks. If Peter is supposed to be a perfect character, then of course he shouldn't do this, and this scene shouldn't be in the movie. But he's not a perfect character -- he's a very flawed one, and it's an in character scene.

When someone coughs, talks or even breathes, they send tiny respiratory droplets into the surrounding air. The smallest of these droplets can float for hours, and there is strong evidence that they can carry live coronavirus if the person is infected. The risk from these aerosols isn’t currently incorporated into the World Health Organization’s formal guidance for nations, though. The WHO suggests that the coronavirus is primarily transmitted by coughing or sneezing large droplets into someone’s face, not a longer-term threat that can be floating in the air. After pressure from scientists, that may soon change. This week, more than 200 scientists published an open letter to the WHO warning about airborne transmission of COVID-19 via aerosols and urging the organization to recognize the risks. The WHO has since acknowledged growing evidence of airborne spread of the disease, but it has not yet changed its advice to protect people from contracting COVID-19 from aerosols. As professors who study fluid dynamics and aerosols, we believe it is important for people to understand the risks and what they can do to protect themselves. What is an aerosol and how does it spread?Aerosols are particles that are suspended in the air. When humans breathe, talk, sing, cough or sneeze, the emitted respiratory droplets mix in the surrounding air and form an aerosol. Because larger droplets quickly fall to the ground, respiratory aerosols are often described as being made up of smaller droplets that are less than 5 microns, or about one tenth the width of a human hair. In general, droplets form as a sheet of liquid breaks apart. You’ve probably experienced this phenomenon by blowing soap bubbles. Sometimes the bubble doesn’t fully form, but instead breaks apart into many droplets. Similarly, in humans, small sheets and strands of liquid – mucus – often stretch across portions of the airway. This most often occurs in locations where the airway opens and closes again and again. That happens deep within the lungs as the bronchioles and alveolar sacs expand and contract during breathing, within the larynx as the vocal folds vibrate during speech, or at the mouth, as the tongue and lips move while talking. The airflow produced by breathing, speaking and coughing breaks apart these sheets of mucus, just like blowing the soap bubble. [Deep knowledge, daily. Sign up for The Conversation’s newsletter.]The size of the droplets varies based on how and where they are produced within the airway. While coughing generates the largest quantity of droplets, research has shown that just two to three minutes of talking can produce as many droplets as one cough.Droplets that are smaller than 5 microns can remain suspended in the air for many minutes to hours because the effect of air drag relative to gravity is large. In addition, the water content of virus-carrying droplets evaporates while they are airborne, decreasing their size. Even if most of the fluid evaporates from a virus-laden droplet, the droplet does not disappear; it just becomes smaller, and the smaller the droplet, the longer it will stay suspended in the air. Because smaller diameter droplets are more efficient at penetrating deep into the pulmonary system, they also pose a much greater infection risk. The WHO guidelines suggested that the virus RNA found in small droplets wasn’t viable in most circumstances. However, early research on the SARS-CoV-2 virus has shown that it is viable as an aerosol for up to 3 hours. Do masks protect from aerosol transmission?Face coverings and masks are absolutely necessary for protection against aerosol transmission. They serve a twofold purpose. First, they filter the air expelled by an individual, capturing respiratory droplets and thereby reducing the exposure risk for others. This is particularly important as they are most effective at capturing larger droplets that are more likely to have larger quantities of viruses encapsulated within them. This prevents the larger droplets from directly affecting someone, or evaporating down to a smaller size and circulating in the air. They also reduce the speed of the puff of air that is produced when sneezing, coughing or talking. Decreasing the velocity of the expelled air reduces the distance that droplets are initially transported into the person’s surroundings. It is important to realize, however, that the protection provided by masks and face coverings varies depending on the material they are constructed from and how well they fit. Nevertheless, wearing face coverings to decrease airborne exposure risk is critical. Is staying 6 feet away enough to stay safe? The recommendation to maintain a 6-foot separation is based on a study by W. F. Wells in 1934 that showed an expelled water droplet either falls to the ground, or evaporates, within a distance of roughly 2 meters, or 6 feet. The study did not, however, account for the fact that following evaporation of the water in a virus-laden droplet, the nuclei remains, thereby still posing a risk of airborne infection.Consequently, while staying 6 feet from other people reduces exposure, it might not be sufficient in all situations, such as in enclosed, poorly ventilated rooms. How can I protect myself from aerosols indoors?Strategies to mitigate airborne exposure are similar to strategies for staying dry when it’s raining. The longer you stay in the rain, and the harder it’s raining, the wetter you will get. Similarly, the more droplets you are exposed to, and the longer you stay in that environment, the higher the exposure risk. Mitigating risk is therefore based on decreasing both aerosol concentration levels and exposure time. Aerosol concentrations can be reduced with increased ventilation, although recirculating the same air should be avoided unless the air can be effectively filtered prior to reuse. When possible, open doors and windows to increase fresh air flow. Decreasing the number of emission sources – people – within a space, and ensuring that face coverings are worn at all times can further decrease concentration levels. Methods of deactivating the virus, such as germicidal ultraviolet light, can also be used. Finally, reducing the amount of time you spend in poorly ventilated, crowded areas is a good way to reduce airborne exposure risk.
