The rain pattered softly against the windowpane, a soothing rhythm that filled the old apartment and gently pulled you to sleep.It mingled with the soft hum of a jazz record playing in the background—one of Dante’s favorites.

You were curled up on the couch, the fluffy blanket having already slipped down to the floor, and a half-finished mug of tea sat forgotten on the table beside you.

Dante padded into the room, still towel-drying his damp white hair, loose curls clinging to his forehead. A playful grin tugged at his lips as he took in the scene. His chest was bare, glistening slightly from the shower, and the black sweatpants he wore hung low on his hips—almost criminally low. You had a suspicion he wore them like that on purpose.

"Looks like I found a sleeping beauty," he teased, plopping down on top of you without a care. He buried his face into your chest, sighing in contentment as his hands slipped under your shirt with familiar ease.

“Maybe you did,” you mumbled sleepily, one hand finding the back of his head to gently caress his hair. The position felt natural—especially on rainy days like this.

Dante chuckled, leaning over just far enough to steal a sip of your tea. “Mmm, sweet. Like you.”

You rolled your eyes, cheeks warming. “It’s cold.”

“But sweet,” he insisted, his voice low and fond as he wrapped an arm around your waist and pulled you close. “Days like this… you, me, rain, no responsibilities—it’s perfect.”

You hummed in agreement, nuzzling into his hair. He smelled like damp leather, a trace of gunpowder, and warm cedarwood. A strange combination, maybe, but one that had become unmistakably comforting.

One of his hands unclipped your bra with practiced ease, a skill he’d picked up quickly in your relationship. When time allowed, he always preferred direct skin contact. It was a habit of his, keeping at least one hand on you at all times. And if he got to choose? He always gravitated to your chest, unapologetically fond.

The other hand traced slow lines along your side, occasionally brushing that one ticklish spot that made you squirm and giggle, something he found endlessly endearing.

His fingers danced lazily along your side, dipping under the hem of your shirt like they belonged there, which, frankly, they did. You shifted slightly beneath him, not out of discomfort but out of instinct, chasing the warmth of his touch.

“You’re always so cold,” he murmured, his lips brushing against your collarbone. “Maybe I should just keep you under me like this all the time. For body heat, obviously.”

“Obviously,” you echoed with a sleepy smile, your hand still tangled in his hair. You gave a gentle tug, just enough to make him look up at you.

His eyes were soft with affection, the kind of look that made your chest tighten in the best way. And yet, the smirk on his lips was unmistakably teasing. He leaned up just enough to press a kiss to your jaw, then your cheek, then finally your lips—a slow, lingering kiss that made your toes curl under the blanket.

“Still cold?” he asked against your mouth.

“A little,” you replied, voice low.

“Guess I’ll have to work harder,” he said, and you could feel the smile in his words.

He nuzzled back into your chest, his breath warm against your skin. One hand remained tucked beneath your shirt, fingers splayed across your stomach in a gentle, possessive hold, while the other resumed its lazy journey along your side.

But despite the closeness, the teasing touches, and the occasional graze of lips on bare skin, there was no rush. No urgency. Just the steady beat of rain against the window, the jazz record skipping softly in the background, and the quiet intimacy of two people wrapped in each other’s warmth.

“Don’t fall asleep on me again,” he whispered, voice half-mischief, half-sincere. “I was just getting comfortable.”

You smiled, your hand stroking through his damp curls. “Then stay like this a little longer.”

And he did.

The New Mutants (November 1982)

What if you could just...do it again?

What if that? In 1982, Marvel decided to try and do exactly that. Chris Claremont, a man who simply never ran out of energy, had rebooted the X-Men with a new, diverse, interesting team and turned them into Marvel's most successful series, a series that was now beginning to be successful enough to demonstrate spin-offs, both as limited series like Magik and ongoing comics like Dazzler. These were all, though, focused on a single character. But what if you just made up a whole new team, like Claremont had for Giant-Size X-Men? What if you did it in a fancy new format called a 'graphic novel' so it could be extra-long and extra-expensive? You could call them...the New Mutants.

The New Mutants is weirdly both very ambitious and very unambitious. That is, it's attempting to do another X-Men, which is a big swing, but it's also just...attempting to do another X-Men, which isn't exactly wildly inventive. This graphic novel (effectively a double-length issue) was designed as the launch of a new ongoing title (which we're going to read right after this), and with it came five, uh, new mutants. I'm sure you know who they are but let's just tick 'em off quickly.

That's good ol' Moira MacTaggert finding the Scottish werewolf girl, Rahne Sinclair. Fun (note: not actually fun) fact: Rahne is not the only female New Mutant to appear naked in this debut issue.

There's Roberto da Costa, from Brazil, who absorbs and then emanates solar energy.

Kentucky coal miner Sam Guthrie, who can fire himself around like a projectile.

Dani Moonstar, a Cheyenne with animal telepathy and various other psychic powers (their limits here, and later on, are usually a bit vague).

And one we have seen before - "Shan" (these days more accurately rendered as Xuân), aka Karma, who has been kind of waiting around the Marvel universe since she first appeared in the very interesting Marvel Team-Up 100. By dint of being the only one we've seen before, and slightly older than the others, she gets to be a sort of team mom.

They all unite, in this issue, for a fairly throwaway plot in which a minor member of the Hellfire Club, Donald Pierce (he's the cyborg one) tries to fuck with them. None of that's really the point, of course: the point of this issue is introducing everyone, and I have to say I love this kind of stuff. Little montages where everyone is doing unspeakably stereotypical - like, say, a Brazilian playing football - are absolutely my jam, as is team-forming stuff in general. It's why I like the X-Men, basically, and it's always fun to see it happen again.

Those first few pages of Giant-Size are maybe the best X-Men pages ever, and these are a recapitulation of that: a very precise recapitulation, in some ways, right down to a pretty crashingly stereotypical Native American character and another one (Rainhe, this time, Kurt the first time) being chased by an angry Christian mob. You love (so to speak) to see it.

So yeah: this issue is absolutely picking up a very well-established formula and trying to reapply it. Parts of the formula, indeed, are older: they're original, 1960s parts, with the team having five members and them all being notably young: actual teenagers. Other parts of it, however, have developed further: this team is more diverse than the 70s team, which was more diverse than the 60s team. Here, we have an actual majority among the five both of women and of POC, which is pretty impressive. I just have one negative thing to say about this issue, though, but it is quite a big one: the art fucking sucks.

Look at Moira here. Her head is about 70% too big for her body, and her face is, in turn, too big for her head. Karma in the middle panel looks terrible too, like an ancient baby. The proportions and expressions throughout are terrible, as is the colouring, an unsettling mix of garish pastels.

The action sequences are fine, although nothing to write home about, but the entire comic appears to be populated by uncanny dolls. This is the first we've seen of Bob McLeod, who went on to draw the ongoing series that we're about to start reading, and it's dampening a lot of my excitement about it. And let's not even get started on Ranhe's half-wolf form.

Anyway, I am trying hard to maintain my excitement, because this is cool! New characters! New book! I love this kind of thing, like I say, and I'm hyped to read it. I'm just also hyped for them to find a new artist, jeez.

Writetober Days 1-2-3

Day 1, Favorite Magic Food Soul: Brownie slides around the ice (in the Ice Arena). The cold making him shiver. All he could think of is to wait until his Master Attendant press onward into the Terria around them. The Food Soul was tired out of his mind.

He faceplanted onto the ice, must have left a mark. He slides unconsciously. He soon realized when he ragained the strength. He lifts himself up, struggling to maintain his balance.

He can't lose his posture now. Just thinking of losing his butler job makes him frightened.

He looked around that the other food souls that were put in to rest, their Master Attendant talking with them and leaving soon after.

As the others were complaining about the cold, Brownie did not let some cold defeat him. All he could do now is wait for his Master Attendant to take him out and off they go on their journey through the Terria.

Day 2: Favorite Defense Food Soul:

Steak paced throughout the break room (Calling it dat lol). He simply was a taking a moment to himself. Thinking over the battles he fought for his Master Attendant.

He didn't mind going into battle, but with Red Wine, it was unbearable!

He scowled at the thought of Red Wine.

Pushing those memories aside, he clutched his swords. He shouldn't make a commotion in the restaurant.

Putting his sword to their holds on his back, he sighed, in his own words, boredom.

"Master Attendant hass been out for awhile, I hope she didn't get into trouble." Steak sighed, worries came to him, forcing him to eat some of the food that Master Attendant left for him. (Idk if they eat I just dk).

As he eat, he mumbled to himself, that everything is fine. Master Attendant is fine.

Steak finished the food and he when to the fireplace and made a fire. He watched as the flames danced in such a small space. He found himself at....a certain level of peace. He slowly fell asleep, next to the metal blockers. (Luckily someone put him to the couch)

Bonus for Day 2! (Cuz why not?!)

Red Wine found himself going into the break room, after finishing cleaning the restaurant area. He found Steak, laying on the floor next to the metal blockers from the fire place.

He sighed, annoyed by Steak's mumbling. Red Wine surprisingly lifted Steak up. He growled at the heat that Steak was giving off, due to his time at the fire place.

Red Wine dropped Steak on the couch.

He grabbed a glass of wine and sipped it.

He sighed quietly and walked out the room, closing the door ever so quietly. He had no idea why he was doing this.

He could have left Steak by the fireplace and just grab his wine, and slam the door on his way out.

"Is dere feelings going on, Red Wine?" Their Master Attendant grinned.

Red Wine ignored the question and walked off.

ONE DAY IS WILL SAIL! STEAKWINE WILL SAIL

Day 3: Favorite Attack Food Soul

Raindrop Cake sat near the window. His umbrella closed and on his lap. He stared at the raindrops chasing other on the window.

There was nothing else to do on a rainh day like these. No point in helping with the restaurant, who would come on a day like this? Maybe a few people who happen to be caught in the rain.

Yet ingredients were going low for the deliveries. It just got annoying when the Master Attendant has to go out, bringing the annoyed Raindrop Cake along. He was a favorite.

Raindrop Cake enjoyed the silence, with the expectation of the rain.

He closed his eyes. Let this mind calm from the memories of the past.

He woke up the next morning in his bed. (Lol)

oh so you like fashion? what are your top 5 must-haves then?

1. fishnet tights

they're just really comfortable for me because unlike regular tights they're not too hot and oppressingly sticky. they're there, they're not there, it's amazing. they also make whatever you're wearing immediately punk-ish so that's awesome! i have one with very tight openings that i like to wear in the colder months since it keeps me warm somehow, and another with wayy broader openings for the summer so i can still wear them and not overheat.

2. puffy jackets

aviator jackets! cropped winter jackets! faux fur jackets! love them! fashionable yet warm. also theyre generally waterproof/resistant so thats great for someone who lives in rainh weather.

3. jean jackets

this gets its own section because um!!! i love them! i love them regular, oversized & furry, i love them cropped & black & just denim, no warmth. i love them ripped! i love those black ones with silvery beads all over them!

4. chokers

idk what to say. chokers are cute! here are mine: as you can see, depending on which one i pick it softens or harshens the look so they hold great power!

5. socks

socks!!! they can really complement a look. i love knee-high black with white stripes or vice versa, i love the skater socks that only go up to your calves. i also really like sheer socks!! they go great with oxfords. ive seen them a lot with heels too, especially platforms.
