"It takes a lot of energy to hate a 7 year old" and the immediate cut to Benson's tearfulled face.
Was it to emphasizes what Sheppard did to Benson ? How, as a grown man, he forced himself on a 7/8 year old kid. How much he hated Benson to do something like that ?
Or is it to emphasizes what Benson was going through? It takes a lot of enegy to hate on a 7 year old. Benson hates his 7/8 year old self, for being weak, for not doing anything (unlike Randy). It takes a lot of energy to hate your inner child.
