I don’t know how to put into words that Rapunzel being a giant creepy crawly monster who scuttles around on a bunch of giant hairy legs only to be consumed by a giant frog just hits right for me. She’s a creepy spider like woman and she poked and prodded at what can only be considered her natural predator. And what happened? She got too cocky and was eaten. A spider devoured by a frog.

there has been lots of dumb d20 disk horse over the years (s/o to “saccharina is over powered” and the norman/skip wars of ‘22) but “finding rapunzel creepy is ableist” when she is first talked about in the context of having lied to the baba yaga and we first meet her when she’s cheerfully being like no ignore my omnipresent omnipowerful hair :) we had a difference of opinions with the snow queen :) right next to the display of the snow queen’s severed head

We need a The Seven season 2 about the Daughters Of The Crown. Partially because I’m obsessed with The Seven’s energy, partially because I need more of these fairytale princesses. I also really want to see all the cut content from Neverafter (Goldilocks, The Old Woman In The Shoe, The Nutcracker, etc)

Erika and @quiddie have already claimed Snow White and Cinderella respectively, but what about the other girls? Here are my thoughts.

Snow White-Erika Ishii (duh)

Cinderella-Aabria Iyengar (duh)

Elody-Rekha Shankar (Elody already made me bawl so many times. Katja already made me bawl so many times. I know from Mice and Murder that she can pull that exes dynamic HARD. REHKA! DESTROY ME EMOTIONALLY PLEASE!! But seriously, she’s such an emotionally powerful actor, and this is a role I would implicitly trust her with.)

Mira-Isabella Roland (Do I just want her and her prince or Alba to have a romantic relationship so that I can freak out about how amazing Brennan and Izzy’s relationship is? Mayhaps. But seriously, Izzy always gets incredibly deep into her character, and I’d love to see her do that with as tragic of a character as Mira. Plus, part of the reason I love Mira so much is her rebellious streak (for lack of a better term), and I KNOW Izzy can bring that “fuck you world” energy.)

Rapunzel-Becca Scott (We know from The Seven that she can pull of INTENSE energy masterfully, and I would love to see her have that intensity with a more…devious character I suppose? I’m not sure if I’m making sense. Anyways, let my girl be cunning and cruel, I’m begging you. Give Becca this please.)

La Bête-Persephone Valentine (I hesitate to put this one, because I know the very common headcanon of La Bête as trans and I don’t want to treat Persephone as just “the trans one” like certain other people in this fandom. However, Persephone is just so good at portraying such a big character with so many underlying subtleties, it’s just perfect for her. Her ability to craft a character that seems so obviously one way at first glance, but with so many hidden layers and facets underneath is just amazing.)

EDIT:Had some reblogs pointing out that Izzy and Sephie should be switched. Honestly, most of my time writing this post was dedicated to deciding just that!! Honestly, I could go either way on them, they would both be perfect for both! I mainly just went with what I did because I didn’t want to keep typecasting Persephone as “tragic water girl with abandonment issues”😅. But yeah, Persephone would probably be the better choice for Mira and Izzy would probably be the better choice for La Bête.

Don't wanna engage in discourse too much because it takes years off my life but I will say this — Something that annoys me about the ableism discourse surrounding Rapunzel (SPEAKING AS AN AUTISTIC, PHYSICALLY DISABLED PERSON) is that it was very specifically Rapunzel's autistic traits that made Timothy empathise with her. He initially didn't trust her because... all of the fucking information we knew prior to even meeting her, but he still had hope that she wasn't in on the plan or could be dissuaded from it. Then, when he was talking to her, he began building a weird sort of bond with her (very rough, admittedly, but he was still trying) specifically when she told him that she had to rehearse her personality and social interactions. He didn't treat that as creepy at all, he found it creepy that she could fucking spy on them at all times using her hair !!!!!

Excuse whilst I ramble for a second, need to get my thoughts out about this but there's something abotu Rapunzel being based off of a Roper that's so interesting to me

Firstly basing her initial stablock off of a monster to begin with says something. And I know it's been done before and whatnot, but still, how much do you want to bet that Rapunzel viewed herself as a monster before joining the princesses' group? A monster hiding behind a civil facade, but a monster nonetheless

Which brings me to my second point of Ropers being monsters that hide in plain sight. They're quite similar to mimics really, they can just only look like one thing and that is a stalagmite or stalactite. And if we think back to the episode when Timothy has his chat with her and finds something to be off about her. Well what isn't off about a fleshy stalactite/stalagmite?

There's also something in the way in which she is defeated.

Ropers are known for eating everything they come across, only being unable to digest gemstones, magical items and a few certain metals I believe (I may be forgetting some things). In a series all about consumption of others, and embracing who you are (even if it's deemed monstrous), Rapunzel is defeated by Gerard through consumption. The princess based off of the monster that survives by eating everything it can, that is rather intelligent and makes deals with other monsters for more food so it can survive, even in co-habitation with other monsters, is consumed by the prince who doesn't want to be monster, by a weapon that is very similar to the inital tendrils of a Roper. I love that, it's so cool. And I know none of it was done on purpose but the nature and building of this story has worked so well that it lets great moments like these happen which such massive underlying subtext and you don't even really notice unless you go and analyse it.

Not to mention, this is a creature that is solely based around food (most of the time), eating to survive, setting up deals so it can eat and I think it's wild that the first time we have a proper conversation with Rapunzel is in the kitchen, where Timothy taints the food. Which would be like, the ultimate snub to a Roper so no wonder Rapunzel hates him so much,

sorry for thinkin about neverafter again but really im thinking of the neverafter that exists in mine & my mutuals brains only not the 'Real Show' or Whatever.

whenever i think abt Mira i think soo much abt her chronic pain & how that might change her relationship with the Authors. pain is such a body thing and so like. at least to me antithetical to ink&word-being i wonder if the pain is a moment that the Authors don't have access to. like the words sure, but the physical experience of the pain as something that Mira alone can have. chronic pain as literally disanimating but also creating a space of alterity outside able-bodied ambulation, outside of the Norm or Narrative. idk these aren't fully formed thoughts. but i think about this often.

also tangential entirely but. god. rapunzel neverafter. to me she is very touch averse most of the time & also. has to have sound happening she cannot bear the silence because she was literally alone in a tower for solong. alone awake aware. isolated but very consciously so!!! like. did she ever get out of that loneliness. did she ever really get out of the tower if the tower is a part of her now. her hair winding around sinking into everything to make sure she's known. but also so background to become part of the building. is she becoming the tower-castle. interacting with the world primarily with her hair, the instrument of her captor-savior. has she gotten out. her name is a bargain her mother made. her name is the reason for her loneliness. if she's still Rapunzel can she ever get out of the tower.
