Welcome Future Resident!

Hi I’m Silas Walker, and I’ll be your RA for your freshman year at Lipton Hall. Before classes officially start you’ll have a full week to get settled into your new home. During Welcome Week you can attend hall specific events and others that are campus wide. I’ve planned some fun and helpful events for you to meet and learn with your future hallmates like a game night and a paint and sip picnic in the park!

Most days will leave you some space for free time to do with as you please.

The attached flyer gives you a look at the events you’ll attend each day. Since it doesn’t go in-depth for each event I’ll do that down below.

Monday- First you’ll unload and move into your dorm room at Lipton Hall! Once you’ve finished getting everything in and said your goodbyes to your family you can settle in and unpack with your new roommate. Later that evening we’ll have a Move in Day Mixer in the common room so that you can meet and get to know your other hallmates.

Tuesday- In the morning I’ll be leading a Campus Tour to help you and your hallmates not only know the general lay of the land, but also plan your route to your classes. We’ll end the tour at the campus bookstore so that you all can pickup your textbooks and other materials you’ll need for the semester. There is also a small café in the bookstore where we’ll grab a quick lunch. That evening you’ll have some free time.

Wednesday- In the morning we’ll attend the Student Organizations Fair so that you can explore all the ways to get involved. In the afternoon you’ll have some free time, and in the evening you can attend the outdoor movie night.

Thursday: Most of Thursday will be taken up by the Off Campus Tour I’ll be leading to show you and your hallmates some student favorite spots and how to use the subway. In the evening there will be a Speed Friending Event for new students, mostly freshman, transfers and foreign exchange students will be attending.

Friday: In the morning we’ll be having a pancake breakfast in the common room, and you’ll write a letter for your future self to read at the end of your freshman year. In the after noon you’ll have some free time and that evening I’ll be hosting a big game night.

Saturday: The only thing planned for Saturday is a Paint and Sip Picnic in the Park in the afternoon, you’ll have the rest of the day to explore freely.

Sunday: We’ll go to a nearby brunch spot later in the morning. In the afternoon I’ll be hosting an organization and study tips session in the common room to help set you all up for success. And that evening you’ll have free time to prepare yourself for your first day of classes.

Like seriously. Here's the not-at-all-research-based max1461ist "how to run a language class" checklist:

At least five hours a week. Make the class either long or frequent. Two hours a week is like, essentially pointless.

Basic shit that is sadly getting less common: use a textbook, teach grammar explicitly, have vocabulary lists for students to memorize, etc.

Assign a very large volume of relatively easy homework. There should be homework due every class day. Good problems to assign are conjugation exercises, single sentence translation exercises, and past the intro level, readings + comprehension questions. Again, exercises should be individually easy but very large in volume; language is learned through repetition. Yes, this makes the work "boring". Sorry.

Similarly, have small tests and quizzes frequently. Weekly or semiweekly. Each should test that week's material and be short (10 or so questions).

If possible, homework and tests should be entirely pen and paper based, and free response rather than multiple choice. The act of physically writing things down is huge for memorization.

Have some method for students to get conversation practice. E.g. smaller class sections or "labs" or whatever, ideally lead by native speakers, where students engage in relatively free conversation on a topic chosen by the instructor. Point students to opportunities outside of class to connect with native speakers and get conversation practice. Ideally set up some sort of recurring social context in which natural conversation between students and native speakers can happen regularly. For instance, a dedicated study lounge or dining area where only the target language is allowed, and to which both students and native speakers are invited.

Admittedly, there is some element of ra ra school pride behind much of this list; this is essentially how the language classes at my undergrad institution were organized, and I believe they are better than probably 90% of college level language classes in the country. But there's also an underlying theory of language learning here: that successful language learning is almost entirely about volume and nothing else. Language learning is one of the few activities where I think time spent on practice is almost directly proportional to skill, and the points above are designed to maximize practice of the four basic skills involved in language use—reading, writing, speaking, and listening. And anecdotally, I can attest that this style of class really works. The problem is it is resource intensive, on the part of the student, the professor, and the institution. So it basically never gets done to its fullest extent.

Superman: Rise of Isis (Henry Cavill/Superman Fanfic) Chapter 27: Quadrant 3 (Cyborg POV)

So far so good. Things are going as Batman and I had planned.

Quadrant 1 started with Grand Canyon itself, fairly peaceful. As we headed for Sedona-or Quadrant 2, Sethos, Deathstroke, Circe, Cheetah and Firefly emerged with a military strike team. The goal was to contain or defeat them in the long stretch of desert to prevent them from being a problem in Sedona, with Aquaman's sole purpose being to contain Firefly. Watching Oak Creek rise and obey the King of Atlantis was something to behold from the air. Cheetah was put out of commission in this quadrant, retreating to the Lexwing.

Now we are Quadrant 3, Red Rock National Park and community. Aquaman is staying in the area with Flash to sweep for any threats or to help any people who may have gotten caught in the middle. I watch as he uses the waters to help kayakers and Flash helps with people on shore. 

"What the hell are these?!" 

I look at the screen and see them, and unfortunately I've seen them before. They were set free the same night that we got Isis out of Alcatraz.  "They are metahumans of some sort---"

"Not all of them." 

I start doing facial scans to let Batman's computer do the work, but the fighting began before I could get a lock on everyone.  Deathstroke and Batman are doing an aerial battle I am recording for later study, Kal and Isis are flying but dealing with Sethos.

"You will give me the jewel!" Sethos roars.

"You will never have the staff of Amun-Ra!" Isis cries. 

"Any Kryptonian can have it!"

"Yes-" Isis says slowly. "Any Kryptonian."

"You will die, today, Isis!" 

I look to the ground where the rest are and see a fog encircling everyone. A face appears and the computer captures it. The plants start to grow larger and move. 

"Mist is here!" 

"Yeah!" Flash nods, watching Mist take human form and materializing to throw a grenade at cars in a school parking lot. "He needs to be contained!"

"Air and fauna are hardly ever contained!" Poison Ivy comes into view. Plants start to snake their way to Upper Red Rock Road, where the high school and performing arts center is.

Who could go against someone like this? "Aquaman--"

"On it!" Aquaman flips off his cycle with trident and shield in hand as the trees snatch it. He rolls and turns, pointing his trident at the plants and begins to dehydrate them.

"My babies!" Poison Ivy fumes. 

"Stand!" I tell everyone.

Green Lantern starts to turn and create a funnel, pulling air to him but Mist as well. He rises above the funnel before Mist can touch him and turns to encompass him in a green sphere. I smile as Mist bounces about inside the bubble, unable to escape.

"So where do I take this?"

I frown. "Damn." I put the Flying Fox on remote in my memory, grab a cylinder, and ignite my rocket to fly down. "Here!" I fly back up to the ship and get another, flying it down to the ground while narrowly missing the firefight between Deathstroke and Batman. "Aquaman!"

Aquaman nods and turns his trident toward Poison Ivy herself. Horror stricken, she backs away. I was going to hold the cylinder, but then I see a man of steel, and not Superman.

"Girder," I say softly, and turn to fire my sonic cannon at him, protecting the cylinder and myself. 

Girder struggles with the disruption, giving Flash enough to time to push away...and away...and away...

"Where you goin'?" I yell.

"I don't know!" Flash yells back.

Aquaman keeps backing Poison Ivy toward the cyclinder and she tries to move away, but then I turn on suction and it brings her inside. I seal the top and she screams. 

"Can't do much with glass and metal," I mutter. In the distance near Boyton Canyon, I see a figure streaking across the sky.

"Uh-oh," Aquaman says. "Who was that?"

I sharpen my red eye and use the telescopic vision and hearing: 

"You are not going to the temple!" Sethos sneers.

"It is my right!" Isis says with outrage. 

"I have your staff!" Sethos declares. "You have already been defeated by me!" He twirls the staff, and adds in a growl, "You lost your right ages ago."

The flying figure stops.

"Who are you?" Kal El asks.

"Rightful ruler." he replies. "I am Black Adam"

"Of what?" Sethos asks.

"Of all I survey," he says, outstretching his hand. "The staff, woman."

"No," she says simply.

"Batman!" I call to him. "Plan B!"

The hatch of the ship opens and out flies none other than Shazam.

"Seriously?" Shazam says and takes off. 

"Can't you get your own powers?" Shazam asks. "Always trying to steal or swindle them--"

"Quiet, boy!" the warrior says. "My rule will start with you, on your knees or in your grave!"

"Who is that?" Flash asks as the two beings start trading blows that spark lightning.

"Black Adam," Batman, Aquaman and I reply.

"What are we gonna do?" Flash looks panicked.

"Not my fight," Batman replies. "Not this time." 

Isis takes off with her mother's staff, and Superman and Sethos start fighting in the air, the former with crook and flail, the latter with a staff. Isis flies over the Kachina Woman statue to a structure behind it built in the stone. It was the temple, hidden in plain sight. 

Kal puts up a good fight and Sethos chases him inside the temple. Moments later, the skies darken.

Deathstroke jets for the temple but I blast him with my sonic cannon. He goes into a tailspin and heads for the Lexwing, which has stopped moving.

Aquaman, Flash, Green Lantern and I secure prisoners as the Lexwing just hovers.

"Why isn't he attacking?"

"We're protected by the Fox," I answer.

"So it's over?" Flash asks.

"I think it has just begun."

she doesn’t think about it much, given it’s very common among her species, but gets annoyed if anyone else thinks she needs extra help because she’s so small

▸     what’s  their  hair  like  ?

her hair is on the thicker side and the color is all natural though considered a little strange for her village as most have dark, colder colors that blend in better with the surrounding mountains for camoflauge

▸     do  they  spend  a  lot  of  time  on  their  hair / grooming ?

her hair tends to poof up in humidity of warmer climates (especially limsa lominsa), so she’s careful to keep it well taken care of with homemade remedies. the color is all natural though considered a little strange for her village as most have dark, colder colors that blend in better with the surrounding mountains for camouflaging purposes.

▸     does  your  muse  care  about  their  appearance  /  what  others  think  ?

i wouldn’t say she cares about it in terms of other people but she does have a particular style that she’s really fond of and keeps up that she rarely changes and will feel uncomfortable wearing anything else or trying to fit a different look.

outdoors. her village in the mountains didn’t have the same kind of structured, brick and mortar buildings that are in the rest of eorzea and she tends to feel a little cramped in them. her own home has no glass in the windows and plenty of plants to keep it feeling as airy and free as possible

she prefers sunshine for the most part as it makes reading outside earlier and like a lot of lizards, she likes basking in the sun and having a good warm nap

forest of course. her home is in gridania because she loves the greenery and maintaining

she doesn’t really like either as she has a preference for tree and plant based materials, but if pressed, probably gems

flowers, she tends to press them and keep them in her journals for botany work and decoration

probably personality, she’s never cared much for looks other than a passing “oh they’re pretty. anyway” but once she starts meeting someone more intimately, the feelings start to arise and she gathers crushes

being alone. she hates crowds, partially because she gets her feet stepped on and also it’s just sort of overwhelming

the mountains she grew up in were pretty cold so she can handle cold temperatures well enough but ultimately she prefers warmth

prior to coming to eorzea, nana had no friends and very little social skills, so she only has very few friends and doesn’t really know how to keep them or why they like her in the first place.

▸    reading  or  playing  a  game  ?

absolutely reading. she came to eorzea to study and her trip abroad just got kind of derailed so ultimately she’d rather be reading than saving the day. she has collected quite a few books on her travels but since she always seems to be busy, they’ve collected in a corner of her personal cottage to be put away later

▸     what  are  some  of  your  muse’s  bad  habits  ?

she often gets caught up in work to the point that, rather than cooking, she will just straight up eat the raw ingredients.

▸     has  your  muse  lost  anyone  close  to  them  ? how  has  it  affected  them  ?

uh... yeah. the main one that affected her was minfilia since it really felt like she saw something in her that most people didn’t, from the beginning. seeing as nana never got close to anyone prior to eorzea, she was never affected by deaths around her, but it got significantly harder when she started getting close to people and she has no idea how to cope because she does not process emotions well

▸     what  are  some  fond  memories  your  muse  has  ?

while the successes and major missions stick out, her favorite memories are just spending time in the waking sands, reading while other people talk and just feeling like a part of a family

▸     is  it  easy  for  your  muse  to  kill  ?

it’s something she feels like she just has to do for survival because like. she’s a healer and if she doesn’t defend herself at least a little, she’s done for

▸     what’s  it  like  when  your  muse  breaks  down  ?

you will never see it because she usually hides away but generally she just numbs over and goes quiet, usually avoiding people and problems and when she does return she’s still pretty closed off.

▸     is  your  muse  capable  of  trusting  someone  with  their  life  ?

no not really. she’s always a little used to relying on herself and as a healer, she’s usually the one trusted with people’s lives. having anyone else who isn’t also a healer makes her feel very nervous and she’ll still be on edge

▸     what’s  your  muse  like  when  they’re  in  love  ?

completely flustered. she has difficulty processing any emotions and friendship was already hard enough so actual love makes her extremely nervous and insecure. instead of talking to anyone or expressing those feelings out loud, she has books of romantic poetry that she scribbles and puts all her thoughts in for no one to see ever. when confessed to by someone else, she definitely just goes red and excuses herself to go pace and exhale loudly for awhile.

Personal Statement

I’m Joel Paik, an undergraduate at Yonsei University, studying IID and STP at Underwood International College. I have a passion for 3D modeling and animation, stemming from a hobby of making video game fanart in middle school. 

Although 3D animations are my focus, my job as an RA at the Yonsei International Campus dorms in Songdo primarily involves the use of Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, and Premier to create posters and promotional materials to advertise upcoming events for Appenzeller International House. 

Both I and my parents are Korean-American. I grew up in an environment that fostered many different hobbies and interests, but never felt particularly compelled to explore these. During my time growing up in the United States, I did not dream of studying design or even coming to Korea for university. I spent my high school years on track to study engineering in the US, but I realized my range of experiences was very narrow.

Before university, I lived in one place my whole life. I lived, played, worked, and attended school all in a single town. In elementary school I set myself down a path from which I did not stray all the way through high school. When the opportunity arose to study in another country, I suddenly felt as though my whole life up to that point had been far too stagnant. I felt as though I had very little to show for the last eighteen years of my life. I spend my time now with the goal of gaining experiences, skills, and knowledge in as broad a range of subjects as possible.  

In my free time I enjoy, above all things, knitting. Many of the hobbies I tried in childhood I quickly gave up, but knitting in particular has stayed with me to this day. I overemphasize, I think, the value of tangible evidence of my work. For any of my choices or actions to feel worthwhile, I find myself needing physical evidence of its occurrence. Because knitting offers physical results of my time invested, it easily became the most rewarding, and least tiresome, of all the hobbies I tried. 

I struggle to visualize my end goal for both my time in school and my career as a whole. However, I know this: I want my art to be an effective tool of communication. This is my highest priority; it is how I believe my actions have meaning in the world. I hope that in taking this course I can better learn how to communicate ideas, emotions, and messages to other people through any action or work.

Chaos is the pandimensional plane and/or power with infinite amounts of time and space dimensions, in contrast to cosmos which only has three spatial dimensions and one linear time dimension. In comparison with the linear time of cosmos, Chaos can be described as timeless in the way that it is not contained nor limited by one-dimensional time, and formless because of its ever changing and infinite amount of space dimensions. Cosmos is causal, which means that it is bound by the law of cause and effect (Karma), while Chaos is totally Acausal (Akarma) and free from all the limitations of causal law. Chaos is the eternal and lawless becoming and is therefore an active and dynamic form of eternity. Chaos was, Chaos is and Chaos becomes All and Nothing at one and the same time. Chaos is therefore the only true Freedom and the Ur-essence beyond all the confining structures of the cosmic existence.

Our 'I' (the ego) is shaped and formed by the limitations of cosmic existence, while our Self, which is the wholeness of our inner Acausal core beyond the hylic forms of our ego, is the same as the latent inner force of Chaos, that we call the Black Flame. The 'I' is the focal point of the Self that has bound and fixated it to the cosmos, which it has been tricked to glance at. The ego/'I' is therefore the 'conscious' or 'dayside' mind and the 'I'/eye which is blinded by the 'light' of the cosmos. The Self is therefore the dark (as in 'outside the light of the false god') and hidden essence that links us to the primeval Chaos and the Acausal.
