Ratchet and Clank movie finally

Just went to see the new movie based on a game in RealD 3D. The 3D was not worth it and did not add to the movie at all. That’s probably why I didn’t see it mentioned in any commercials or trailers. There’s also a special post credits scene.

So I’ve already seen the movie when it was 95% complete back in February last year. Of course I couldn’t talk about it due to an NDA. Now that the movie is out I think I can talk about the movie now. I wrote a private journal about the experience so I wouldn’t forget it. The plot was not changed, however some of the music was changed (I think the score wasn’t finished yet) and the credits were added.

The first time I saw the movie I thought it was great. As a fan of the series I thought it was a good and I was entertained. 8 out of 10. After seeing it again it felt kinda meh. Many of the jokes weren’t making me laugh although I did see the move already. And I started getting bored.

As of now the RT score is very low - 14% and dropping. I don’t think it deserves to be that low. The visuals are fantastic, but the story is just okay. Ultimately the movie feels like it’s targeted at young audience instead of those who grew up with the games. It’s also somewhat trope-y. Clank and other supporting characters don’t get much development.

Some spoilery easter eggs include: Elaris playing Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando in first person although she’s playing it as if it were a multiplayer game. When Clank scans Ratchet, Daxter, Dan Johnson, and Sly pop up. There also crates everywhere.

Below is the original thing I wrote. Clad with spoilers and typos I don’t care about (I wrote it quickly). Hope I’m not violating anything. If you do see the movie, don’t forget to stick after the credits.

It is Friday Febuary 27. I took an hour drive from school to go to a theater in Century City to see a test screening of Ratchet and Clank the movie. I am writing this to remember everything. I signed an NDA so this cannot be published until the movie is released. As of now there is no release date.

The lobby had posters with the smaller characters and their voice actors. I remember Andrew Cownden (from LRR? wat) , John Goodman, and Sylvester Stallone playing Victor.

The screening was mostly for executive guys in the industry (and their children), who sat in the main area. The 20-30 so fans had to sit in the front really close the screen. Whatever, a good price to pay for the privilege.

So before the screening started a few guys from associated companies talked about the movie. One of them mentioned that the movie isn't done so there's some lip syncing issues etc.

So first there were the company logos that fly by. Looked a little shoddy as there wasn't any transition between them. That's fine, it'll be fixed. In fact there were several transitions that were not very neat. I distinctly remember one being the radial screen wipe. I expect this to be improved, no biggy.

First shot is Drek's ship. Exposition text had some jokes throughout the movie. This one said “Bad guy speech in 3...2...1” He blows up a planet with the deplanetizer. Yeah they reveal it from the start. Much different than cutting out a part and having the rest fall into the sun. So after that they have the movie logo appear.

Cuts to Veldin, Kyzil Plataeu. Ratchet is working out to a TV show of robots, the lead of which looks like Richard Simmons. Robots do 2000 pushups which obviously Ratchet can't, so he drops to the floor. Channel moves to the galactic rangers with Qwark and some new characters. Cora is a female with attitude, and I can't remember the rest. There is another woman whose name starts with A and has 3 syllables who acts as a support for the team. Neftin Prog is mentioned here. They conveniently are on Veldin to try to recruit someone. Also Ratchet lives in a garage with an old guy that runs the shop. Can't remember his name.

Old pedrestian comes to the garage to pick up his ship. Ratchet totally pimps out the guy's ride even though he only wanted an ejector seat. The car is equipped with a magnet which the guy activates and it starts pulling things. So while Ratchet is showing off the car, the guy starts it and of course takes ratchet with him. It takes off while pulling everything behind them. Ratchet scrambles to disable the car just before hitting a wall. After which the guy ejects and exclaims “I want a refund” while blasting off.

Back at the garage Ratchet tries to convince the other guy to let him go to the recruit for an hour. He goes off sees the rangers and tries to join. Qwark is literally on fire and gets extinguished. Qwark says “If you have what it takes” After which immediately cuts to “You don't have what it takes” with ratchet in the room. The rangers did a background check on him listing out the various questionably legal things Ratchet. He's kicked out of the room and the next person in line is a kid. Which Qwark dismisses.

Meanwhile, Drek wants to assault the galactic rangers but has no forces. He recruits Dr. Nefarious, who isn't a robot and is entirely organic. There's a shot of the robot factory. They are manufactured specificly to kill the rangers. Suddenly the power fails and a silhouette of Clank appears on the screen. After power comes back on he pops out of the machine on the conveyor belt and is marked as a defect. Victor is ordered to kill him. Clank escapes via a ship and is hit by one of two rockets fired by Victor. The ship's computer quips as it sets a course. “Course set, but we will never make it there”

Ratchet walks back to the garage sad. He climbs on the crane that night and sees the ship crashing down. He hops on a scooter and gets to the site. The ship is still quipping “Told you we would never make it” and is about to explode. Ratchet rescues Clank just before it does. They introduce themselves and head back to the garage. Ratchet fixes Clank and he talks about having to warn the rangers about the impending attack. (At this point it wasn't clear to me that while Clank is a defect he might still have the programming to destroy the rangers. It becomes clear later this isn't the case). Ratchet lies to Clank calling the rangers his friends and agrees to help Clank.

Rangers do some event thing and Dreks ship is overhead dropping robots to attack the city. Unaware of this, Ratchet and Clank take off in the pimped out ship. On the way Clank tries to identify Ratchets species. Ratchet explains how he was dropped on Veldin as a child and is a lombax. During this scene there's cameos by Daxter, Dan Johnson, and Sly Cooper. They discover the attack. Clank calls out Ratchet's lie, and plays it back to him. “Do you record everything I say?” , this is also played back to him. Something happens to to ship that requires Ratchet to fix some wires under the dashboard while Clank pilots. And Clank can't pilot a ship (unlike the original game). Fixing that, Clank decides to program the magnet to specifically target raritanium in the bots. Using this, they lift all the bots up and manage to send them back to the deploying ship, destroying them all. Victor is still on the ground and commandeers a taxi to get out.

Funny part: One of the friendly robot forces falls off the bridge with a Wilhelm scream, identical looking robot calls out “Wilhelm!”

On the ground Ratchet and Clank are hailed as heroes. Qwark has to intervene. He reluctantly recuits the two to join the rangers. Old guy at the garage is shocked.

The villains devise a plan to manipulate Qwark.

There's a running gag where Drek's minions attempt to text on their phones behind Drek's back.

Ratchet is inducted into a 3 day accelerated training course. He gets a suit which pretty much explains how he can carry every weapon at once. Basically you think a weapon into your hand and it appears. They go through all the weapons and Ratchet has trouble dealing with the recoil and stuff. Clank is with the support girl and discover that Drek is not only destroying planets, but taking a chunk from each of them. Eventually it is revealed that he wants the super planet. (This differs from the game, in which he does it for money. Now he actually wants a planet for the blarg). Also the room they're in belonged to Nefarious once. Rangers treated him like crap so he left and so this girl's in the same position. There's also a scene in which Cora is playing Going Commando in first person. They also attach Clank to Ratchet's back, which Clank finds embarrassing.

So now they want to attack the robot factory. It becomes a running element that the rangers ignore the support girl, who wants to do an operation properly, whereas the other guys just want to go in.

There's also this scene where Ratchet's on the street and his fans rush for him, something I've always wanted to see. Course Qwark has to be a dick and ruin it.

Anyway they infiltrate the robot factory which is seemingly abandoned. They are ambushed by an army of Mr Zurkons. Qwark backs into Dreks room while fighting the Zurkons. Drek convinces Qwark that betraying the rangers will give him his fame Ratchet took away from him. Drek's assistant robot is captured by the other rangers. Reminds me of an infobot.

Qwark disables the weapons on the ranger fleet (then posts something to an instagram thing with a ton of hashtags) and on the next attack this forces the rangers to retreat. Qwark is captured intentionally and Ratchet attempts to go in alone to save him. Meanwhile Victor hops aboard Clank and support girl's ship to try to destory him. Clank outmaneuvers Victor and fires a weapon that generates a storm cloud (was this ever in a game?) that rusts Victor before he lands his attack on Clank. Inside the deplanetizer Ratchet is captured by drek in a floaty ball. He's eventually launched off into space while Novalis is destroyed (everyone evacuated off the planet though). Qwark starts to question his decision.

Drek mourns Victor while his blarg minions are texting outside his vision (this has been shown a few times). Drek's minions are sent out an airlock. Nefarious sheepinates Drek and sends him off to the planet thing he made. Also turns out it was his plan all along to target Umbris (?), which would cause a cause a reaction that would destroy the planet system

Ratchet's back on Veldin fixing ships. He tears down posters of Qwark. Poster is revealed with child Ratchet with robots that look like Crunk and zephyr. Old guy advises him “Heroes don't have to do big things, just the right ones.” Ratchet repeats this to Qwark later. Clank finds Ratchet here, and he hops back on board. This time the team listens to support girl, and try to make the deplanetizer miss its target. They do this with the magnets. So Ratchet infiltrates the deplanetizer and sabotages it. Meets Qwark. Fights Qwark with all their weapons. Qwark uses a tornado launcher and then they have the little tropey “You don't have to do this” thing and Qwark shoots off the tornado.

Nefarious shows up and him and Qwark fight. They have this thing where Nefarious is calling Qwark out with him using one liners wrong. After this, Nefarious has a RYNO and activates the deplanetizer, which is veered off course by someone piloting a magnet ship around it. The RYNO does not fire a crapton of rockets, and instead vaporizes them apparently. Heroes manage to kick him off balance and have him shoot himself with the RYNO while falling out.

Drek lands on his planet and is desheeped. He sees himself and his planet get hit with the deplanetizer.

Before the deplanetizer crashes Ratchet, Clank and Qwark make their way to the bridge to get to the teleporter. Qwark is knocked down and wants R&C to use it themselves. They flip the teleporter over in order for the 3 of them to use it. Ratchet and Qwark vomit upon returning. Ratchet decides to return to Veldin.

Final scene: Ratchet's in the garage. Clank meets him there. They decide to return to the rangers when they need them, I think.

In the bit after the title voice actors are shown, the deplanetizer crash site is shown and Nefarious is revealed in his robotic form.

It ends with “Title Screen Crawl” with the music “Boys are back” by some artist “The Boys Are Back in Town” by Thin Lizzy. Another popular song played at some point during the attack on the city when Clank was piloting the ship.

Yeah sweet movie. It deviates a lot from the game.
