wip wednesday! i missed last week since i was stuck in office, but here's this week.

first, im almost done with the right glove of ravenlight! im about three-quarters of the way through the bind-off for the cuff here, and then i just have the thumb stitches to pick back up to do the ribbing there.

second, i figured i'd go ahead and finally post the current travel project i have on the needles. it's a simple chevron pattern baby blanket, and the pattern repeat is easily memorized, so it makes a good mindless project to pull out during tabletop games. 14 rows of the variegated yarn, ten rows of the white, and you get this.

Anyway, I had enough of paranoia preventing me from posting stuff. I haven't said shit about any AU of mine for a hot minute, so today I'll say something about King's Guard. I won't be writing this story for awhile (like a year or more in the future since I write slow), and this is prologue stuff anyway so it isn't that much of a spoiler. If you're like me, you'll probably forget this by then anyway. Still going to put it under the read more though. :3

Warning: Major character death, but also not.

For better context, Pico and Boyfriend had no idea about the other's true identity as an assassin and prince respectively. They happened to bump into each other in the market when dressed as commoners, and increasingly frequent encounters made them slowly fall for each other.

When the night the crown prince was going to be named arrived, Pico used the masquerade as an opportunity to sneak in. A few other assassins from the Ravenlight Order, the group he works for, joins him to ensure the prince with the Voice of Authority wouldn't escape. All the ginger was told about his target was that he had blue hair, and that he would be wearing a raven mask. He was also told to proceed with caution since there were rumours about the danger of the prince's Voice. It alone could cause the heaven's light to smite him, and he didn't want to get into a fight if the rumours were true. He could only do so much as an ordinary human after all.

As the target was walking to the throne to accept his role as crown prince, Pico emerged from the crowd to strike. He ended up slashing the man's mask in half, and saw his lover beneath it. With no time to think, he betrays the Ravenlight Order to protect him. An unknown third party overwhelms him as a curse of silence was placed upon Boyfriend. The ginger was stabbed in the back, and his vision faded as the prince was taken away. He thought it was over when a female voice echoed in the darkness.

"I can give you the means to live until you avenge your king. All I need is your soul."

Random thought I had today: Could Kamelot's The Shadow Theory be seen as somewhat of a prequel to Haven? Obviously, it was never meant to be, and the two albums are not concept ones, they do not have a complete story; but they explore almost the same themes. Also, I feel that their main "characters"/narrators could exist in the same world - one where the wasteland monarchy that is mentioned in Haven is actually called The Shadow Empire (like it is said in the other album) and our narrators are both "asleep but wide awake" (Insomnia), "chosen ones" in a reality similar to what is shown in the Phantom Divine video. The difference would be that the hero from The Shadow Theory is not fully awake, compared to the one of Haven, and all the scenarios and realisations are a dream/hallucination of his - something I think Vespertine could imply (honestly, I never fully understood that song, but the whole theme of the companion/lover in it and Ravenlight, In Twilight Hours, Kevlar Skin and Static feels vague enough). With all parallels though, in the end, he can't still win his battle, his total "awakening" doesn't happen, there's no revolution, which causes his pain and desperation - The Proud and the Broken. Whether there's still hope for him, we don't know, but his struggles are very similar to the ones of Haven's hero to me. In the end, of course, all these concepts remain pure metaphors, as there isn't an actual story/clearly stated connection between the songs. They describe a series of (psychological) experiences, not events, if that makes sense.

do note that this is unblocked- basically as soon as i got it off the needles, wove in the ends, and turned it right-side out for the first time. i am going to block this, mostly because i think that’ll help even out just a lil bit of tension weirdness.

Story:

The Clan was shocked to find him bloodied, standing over the body of their Clanmate, Redwhisker.

Brought before the leader, Stormwolf explained that he had awoken from a vision sent by Starclan, which pressed him into running to the river. There, he found Redwhisker about to dip squashed nightshade juice into their water supply. He had shoved him away, but Redwhisker fought back, and Stormwolf had no choice but to protect himself.

A patrol was sent to confirm the story, and the flattened berries were found at the same place as Stormwolf and Redwhisker’s body.

While some, namely Redwhisker’s kin, remained tense around Stormwolf, many thanked him for the tough decision he had to make to protect them. It was not too hard to imagine Redwhisker hurting them. He hadn’t been himself since his mate, Poppy, left the Clan to re-become a kittypet after never being fully welcomed by his Clanmates.

Stormwolf was still nervous when he was asked to meet Goldstar and the medicine cat, Ravenlight. It turned out that Ravenlight was sickly, and had been for some moons. He didn’t expect to live long enough to train one of the kits when they reached six moons. However, Starclan had clearly chosen Stormwolf to speak through. Maybe he was meant to be Riverclan’s next medicine cat.

Stormwolf waited to answer until the next day, believing he didn’t have much of a choice. He felt out of place being trained as an older warrior, and even less out of place at the sacred Moonstone. 

And it wasn’t at all long until Ravenlight was dead, leaving Stormwolf as the sole medicine cat. 

He tried his best to heal his Clanmates when they got hurt, but Ravenlight died too soon. It didn’t help to have Redhwisker’s brother critically point out that Stormwolf had given him the wrong herbs.

Too, it made it difficult for Stormwolf to meet with Roseneedle, his mate from Thunderclan. At least he could use gathering herbs as an excuse to leave the camp and wait at the river for her, but hardly any time at the Gatherings could he part from his fellow medicine cats to talk with her.

In time, Stormwolf got used to the routine, as did Roseneedle. He got better at distinguishing the familiar-looking herbs. But Redwhisker’s brother, Foxstripe, still acted as though Stormwolf was crow-food, wrinkling his nose in his presence like he could smell rotten prey. 

During one walk to the river, Stormwolf was surprised to see Foxstripe waiting there. An angry Foxstripe explained to him that he had dipped nightshade juice into Riverclan’s water supply several days ago, and it has yet to have had any affects.

When Stormwolf demanded why he would do that, Foxstripe became cold, responding that his brother would never harm their Clan. Stormwolf lied about why he killed him.

Stormwolf asks why he would do that, when Roseneedle runs through her side of the water, eyes closed, saying happily how she was expecting Stormwolf’s kits. Foxstripe responds that he thinks he knows.

He leaps at Stormwolf, and continues his monologue while they slash and bite at each other. He guesses that Redwhisker saw his meeting with Roseneedle, and that Stormwolf killed him to keep the secret, then planted the berries there himself to sell his story. 

Roseneedle stood in shock for a long portion of the fight, but finally snapping out of the shock of what she heard, rushes forward to help her mate. Seeing Foxstripe turn his fangs on his pregnant love, Stormwolf’s fading strength returned. He managed to shove Foxstripe off of him and drive him back and into the water. 

Holding him down, Stormwolf grabbed the bundle of nightshade near and swiftly stuffed it into Foxstripe’s mouth before pouncing on his belly, forcing him to gasp and swallow it down. 

Over his body, Stormwolf and Roseneedle gasped for breath, unable to do nothing but look at each other and pant. When he could finally find words, all Stormwolf could think to do was ask her what she wanted to name their kits.

They continued to meet at the river. Stormwolf had stated that he found Foxstripe’s body, and it was believed he took his own life after not being able to overcome his brother’s death.

He met his kits, two beautiful daughters, getting to play with them, to love them. 

But as familiar with the new and newer routines Stormwolf became, he was still not a perfect medicine cat. He couldn’t save the Clan from an outbreak of greencough, with took three lives, including his own. At least this time, he had time to train an apprentice of his own.
