Rami Bitar Choose Tawfeer Supermarkets to Buy Quality Goods at Affordable Prices

In Lebanon, everyone knows it’s belt-tightening time. Rising inflation and increasing prices at the gas pumps, in the supermarket aisles, at the bakeries, and pretty much everywhere means that the Lebanese pound isn’t going as far as it used.

Research has shown that a growing percentage of high-income individuals are living paycheck to paycheck, according to UNESCWA. The poverty rate in Lebanon doubled from 42 percent in 2019 to 82 percent of the total population in 2021.

To that end, it is unsurprising that many of us have opted to shop at discount stores like Tawfeer Supermarkets to get what we need.

A query of more than 2,100 individuals from different age groups, purchasing powers, and regions about their shopping behaviors, found that more than half 85% had shopped at a discount store in the past month. The availability of these discount stores in multiple areas such as Tawfeer’s locations in Masaken, Maaraka, Wadi, Dweir, Hasbaya, Kfarreman, Tabarja, Rawche, Ouzai, Sarafand, Aabasye, Aaitaroun, Ghazye, Zkak El Blat, Wadi El Zine, Sabra, Kana, Ain Al Delb, Souk Al Ghareb, Al Mrayje, Rachaya, Majadel, and Aabba, has proven to be a great asset to that 85% in their search for affordability.

“A significant number of consumers, too, have been visiting the discount stores even if they haven’t made a purchase, out of curiosity to see if they can find better and more affordable alternatives,” says Mr. Rami Bitar, CEO OF Tawfeer Supermarkets. This implies that individuals and families are coming through the brick and mortar doors to see what’s on offer and comparing prices.

But when other discount stores are getting a bit pricier, Tawfeer Supermarkets has chosen to remain at the side of the consumer by providing quality goods at affordable prices. “We not only have been able to maintain affordability on our shelves but are working on expanding our range of goods as well as our range of stores nationwide,” says Mr. Bitar.

But it’s a fair bet that we’ll see further evidence that all consumers are becoming more price-conscious as their everyday shopping gets done.

Coffee in Beirut

Between tea and coffee, I have always been a tea person. My morning cup of tea is a must before I start my day. Even when I am meeting my friends for breakfast, I don't skip my cup of tea at home before going out. It is probably related to the fact that my family never drinks coffee. We used to buy the ground coffee for when my grandmother or some visitors come over. But the first time I tasted coffee was not at home. I started with cappuccino in college. Then latte, Americano, filtered, french press, espresso, Turkish. I have tried many and my favorites ended up being cappuccino or filtered coffee for after breakfast, and espresso or Turkish for after lunch.

My appreciation for the smell and the taste of coffee grew over the years, and now I have a list of favorite places around Beirut where I could stop for a take-away on my morning drive to the office, or sip my coffee in an outdoor relaxing setting (because Covid safety implies staying outdoors). As the Covid cases are decreasing now, why not start catching back glimpses of what life used to be and meet friends over coffee, or simply take a solo break with a cup smelling the fresh aroma of coffee beans. Here are some of my favorite coffee places in Beirut.

  Kaldi Coffee Bar

Very small shop in Hamra located at the intersection of Jeanne d'Arc and Makhoul streets. I often pick up a morning cup of coffee there before going to the office. They have some high chairs where you can sit on the sidewalks of the street, but I prefer a grab and go. I discovered Kaldi in 2020 after the first lockdown. My favorites there are the cappuccino and the filter coffee, but if you like to try some unusual flavors like turmeric or ginger coffee, you can find them there as well.

Café Younes

Cafe Younes already made it to one of my previous lists (Breakfast in Hamra). This local coffee shop got famous for its delicious signature blends. Café Younes opened a new store in Hamra last year in an old house with a backyard perfectly suitable as outdoor seating. They also have branches in different areas: Sodeco, Badaro, but the Hamra one remains my favorite. My favorite there is the hazelnut cappuccino. One of my dear friends likes their coffee so much she even packs some with her to take abroad every time she visits Lebanon.

  Sift Bakery

This spot in Badaro is relatively new. It opened less than a year ago. I discovered it around Christmas based on my friend's recommendations. They freshly baked bread, croissants, cakes and coffee are all delicious. I haven't tried anything there that I didn't love. Sift shares a seating area (outdoor and indoor) with the neighboring Newbury restaurant. My favorites there are a cappuccino with a pain suisse.

  Caffeine Coffee Roaster  

Not any coffee place, it is also a roaster with a very nice wooden setting reminding me of the old pubs in Dublin. Caffeine is located in Mar Mikhael and is a survivor of the Beirut explosion of August 4, 2020. That didn't stop them from rebuilding the place and coming back stronger. One thing I really liked is the coffee filter pods you can use anywhere to prepare your filter coffee without the need for a coffee machine.

  The High Llama  

This place started few years ago as a small coffee and breakfast shop in the heart of Achrafieh. I used to love their coffee and food but wasn't honestly a fan of the shop setting. Luckily, they moved last year to a much nicer place, still in Achrafieh with indoor and outdoor seating in a beautiful old house. The High Llama is perfect for brunch, lunch, dinner, drinks, coffee, you name it.

  Starbucks Rawche

Last but not least, we can't talk about coffee without mentioning Starbucks. Now Starbucks is the same everywhere, and I have been having Starbucks coffee since a long time. But for this article, I specifically meant to include the Rawche branch that I didn't discover until very recently, and of which I loved the setting, directly overlooking the sea and the pigeon rock (Rawche). My favorite drink at Starbucks is the iced latte, perfect for summer days, especially if you are sitting in the sun, overlooking the Mediterranean sea.

 Finishing with a fun fact about coffee: Did you know that Decaf doesn't mean caffeine-free? In fact, a cup of decaff coffee contains about 12 milligrams of caffeine (compared to around 100 for a regular cup).
