ok first of all this is Not a paid advertisement lmao but as a dog parent and professional who is very skeptical of all dog product manufacturers (and also ALWAYS believed that rawhide is bad, esp coming from a veterinary background) i will 100% be reordering this stuff for the foreseeable future

one of my fav and most trusted trainers always recommends this brand, farm hounds, bc ppl are always asking what chews she buys for her dogs, one of whom is a chewing Machine. i got a coupon from her and (skeptically) ordered their rawhide rolls BECAUSE:

the vast majority of standard rawhide products only use the inner layer of hide; the top outermost layer is used for tanning bc it's more durable and leather sells for more $ than dog chews. the hide from this company uses the Entire hide sourced from small farms

standard rawhide is also chemically treated (which is why it's generally that light white-ish color) to speed up the production process to make more $ instead of allowing them to dry naturally, which this company does

so i have two big dogs at home who love to chew. so i ordered these and started giving them 20-30 min daily chew sessions (1. edible chews like this should always be supervised 2. that's enough time for all the satisfying chewing endorphins to be released in their little brains and for them to scrape off the plaque from their teef, and 3. i wanted the hides to last longer than 2 days lmao)

and i am genuinely So impressed by how long they lasted and how durable they were. the other dog nola (60lb) actually still has like half of hers left after almost 2 weeks, and the only reason echo (90lb) finished hers is bc ppl have been working on the house and she was rly stressed so i just let her chew while someone was working in her line of sight for a while

John pushes open the bathroom door. Alex is panting, wedged between the toilet and the shower; his pointed ears are pinned flat against his head, his clawed hands wrapped around his knees. He perks up a little as John steps closer, golden eyes huge.

"Don't tell me you've never seen a vacuum," John says.

"That is not a vacuum," Alex growls. "That's a hellspawn, demon noise -"

Why it’s the Best Choice

Most of the time, if you look around for a dog bed intended for large breeds, you’ll find something flat and rectangular.

When you start searching for the perfect washable dog bed, there are a few things you should look for.

If you don’t keep these important features in mind, you risk buying a low-quality product at a high price.

A Washable Insert

Washable dog bed covers are great and I think every dog bed should have one.

“You’ll let me get off the bed before you wash it, right?”

At the same time, puppies and older dogs sometimes experience bathroom accidents in their beds, which is quickly absorbed by the mattress or filling.

That’s why you should look for a bed that has a washable insert.

If a bathroom accident happens, you don’t need to deal with the residual smell from stains hidden in the dog bed.

The Best Friends bed by Sheri, my choice for small dogs, is a great example of this. You could toss the entire thing in the washing machine if you needed to and never worry about the filling coming apart.

If you fall in love with a bed that has a non-washable mattress, your best option is to buy a washable cover.

It may not be soft or fluffy, but it’ll come in handy if you suspect bathroom accidents in the future.

Durable Material

It’s easy to think that a dog bed doesn’t need to be indestructible because your dog will just use it to sleep.

When they’re not sleeping, they’ll find curious scents to scratch, lick at interesting spots, or stretch and push the fabric to its limits.

My recommended budget bed has a durable non-slip bottom, which makes it less likely for your dog to chew or scratch through.

If that’s the case, rest easy.

Even if you have the most house-trained pet in the world, your dog will eventually find some way to stain their bed.

Good toys have different shapes and textures for the bird to explore and destroy.  At least three toys should make a bird work for food    Working toys are toys that make them work for their treats or favored foods. Parrots in the wild will spend the majority of their waking hours, hunting and foraging. Toys stimulate their mind and help replicate actions they would execute in the wild. Proper toys and placement enhance a Psittacines life in captivity.

Parrots think they’re working for food while avicultural outsider sees birds playing with toys as birds; playing with bird toys. Your companion parrot is always thinking, and since nothing has changed in their minds, playing with toys is their job. It’s what Mother Nature gave them to survive, this need to forage. If you provide no means of foraging, your bird will seek other avenues. It may be furniture or personal affects. Usually because they are easy and plentiful targets. It’s important to encourage your companion parrot to work for food because it’s a natural behavior. 

Three or four toys should be made of soft wood. Soft wood allows you to push your fingernail in forming an indent.  

The next toys depend on the bird. Large birds like macaws and Cockatoos may have a huge appetite. Introduce hardwood toys into cages and perhaps toys with hard plastics so they can spend more time on the various pieces. Toys may be strung together with rope, leather, chain or a combination of materials.

The balance of toys should be easily shredded. Toys may be store bought or home made. Parrot toy parts are available and helps keep toy making economical.  Soft wood, paper, leather and other textures are important for the bird to explore and destroy

Introduce pieces of food like broccoli or corn, using one of many commercially available or home made toy holders. The food on the toy holder rewards them for playing.

The more textures, shapes, sizes and colors the better.  Diversity is important because in the wild your birds eat a diverse diet. An eclectic selection of toys helps maintain your feathered companions interest.

 Watch a bird in its natural habitat and you’ll see them chewing soft bark and hard tree trunks. Toys made from compressed palm leaf or treated Yucca introduces hours of “pecking pleasure” Interactive toys made from Plexiglas are very effective at reducing birdie boredom.

The majority of toys should hang or be placed in the upper third of the cage. Introduce a few more to the middle third (without hampering access to food dishes) around a perch made from soft wood, comfortable to grasp depending on the size of the bird’s feet. The bottom third of the cage should remain relatively uncluttered to allow the bird to walk freely.

Spot-check toys and perches on a daily basis looking for frayed or sharp edges that may potentially harm your bird.

The more you change the toy and perch arrangement, the more you challenge your companion parrot. It helps them socialize and helps avoids “toy-phobia” 

Parrots can develop phobic reactions to new people, new furniture, and even new birds.

How to Make a Dog Crate More Comfortable

I have been fortunate enough to have had the experience of bringing home a puppy and fourteen foster dogs (thankfully not at the same time!).

Though there are some differences in bringing home an adult dog versus a puppy, most of the preparation is the same.

One of the most significant things we as dog parents need to do before our furry bundle of joy arrives is to set up our new dog’s crate.

Trust me, setting up a crate with “help” from the puppy is far more challenging than taking care of it before they arrive.

Arranging a comfortable crate may seem like an easy task: put a bed and blanket in, maybe a toy, and voila! You have a comfy crate.

But honestly, it’s more than just a blanket, bed, and toys.

Even though it is fun for us to bring a dog home, often it can be scary for the dog. Remember, they don’t know what’s going on.

Plus, going into the crate for the first time also means being away from you.

But don’t worry, there are many things we can do to ease them into this new transition.

What to Put in the Crate

First, I feel it’s a good idea to start with a word of caution.

Not all dogs do well with blankets, toys, and beds.

Some dogs like my dog, Calvin, have issues with items of comfort in their crate.

Calvin is my Brittany Jack Russell mix, and he will destroy anything and everything that I put in a kennel with him. He will even snag items outside of the crate like rugs and destroy those, too.

When I first put Calvin in the crate, it was at bedtime, and all was fine when we woke up.

Unfortunately, the first time I left him home alone in the crate, it was a completely different story.

When I got back, it looked as though a tornado went through the kennel. The bed, blankets, stuffed animal, and nearby rug were all completely shredded.

My biggest fear was that Calvin not only destroyed these things but also consumed some of them.

Everything was so torn apart; there was no way for me to tell if any of it was missing.

Thankfully, after anxiously waiting to see if he had any ill effects, it turned out he only destroyed and didn’t eat anything.

So, the moral of this tale is that until we know what our dogs are going to do with the items we give them, we may want to start slow.

I’m not saying we create a prison cell for our dogs. I’m merely suggesting we use caution.

Beds for Dog Crates

I like to put in a firm bed that fits snuggly inside the bottom of the crate.

Preferably one that is easily washed in the event there are any accidents.

Some dog beds have waterproof liners, which I highly recommend for puppies.

Some of the beds I would recommend are:

PetFusion Dog Bed – Water resistant cover with a waterproof liner, machine washable cover, six different sizes, and a 1-year warranty.

Bark Box Dog Bed made with Memory Foam – Comes in 4 sizes and four colors with a removable, washable cover, plus a 1-year warranty.

AIPERRO Dog Bed Mat – Comes in 4 sizes and the whole mat is machine washable.

Blankets for Dog Crates

I would only recommend a blanket for the colder months, and I would actively discourage putting one in with a puppy as they tend to pee on them.

However, for when a blanket is needed, I would suggest using a smaller blanket that way it won’t take up too much area in the kennel.

Also, it’s advisable to find one that is easily machine washable. This is especially important to keep fleas at bay.

If the dog likes to nest in blankets, I will leave a lightweight blanket in the crate year-round.

Recommended blankets include:

PetAmi Dog Blanket – Comes in over ten different colors and three different sizes, is waterproof, and has Sherpa fleece on one side.

AK KYC Blanket 6 Pack – Small, multi-pack of lightweight blankets. When it comes to puppies, having multiples is usually a good idea.

Furrybaby Fleece Dog Blanket – 3 colors, five sizes, and made with super soft fleece material.

One of Your Shirts – Dogs are very scent-oriented animals. Giving your dog a shirt that you’ve worn can provide them with a sense of comfort when you aren’t home[1].

Ginger, our youngest, loves to carry my socks around. She never chews on them; just carries them around. I will say this has led to a few missing socks.

Toys for Putting in Dog Crates

Boredom often leads to destruction, so toys are essential for any dog crate.

Rotating your dog’s toys is important as it aids in ensuring your dog doesn’t get bored with their toys.

In the beginning, it is wise to use durable toys until you know what your dog will do in your absence.

Also, I find it beneficial to have specific daytime and bedtime toys.

My dog’s crates have always been in our bedroom and listening to them chew on a bone isn’t exactly the best bedtime music.

Good toys can also help prevent crate-time whining.

Here are some of my favorite dog crate toys:

West Paw Zogoflex – I love all of their products, dental wise they are less likely to break teeth, and somehow at the same time are extremely durable.

Dog Bone – It’s a bone. Dogs love bones.

Tizzi – Can be used to stuff treats inside or just as a chew toy.

Qwizl & Toppl– Treat puzzle toys to keep your pup entertained for longer.

Make sure to get a stuffed toy with a squeaker for extra annoyance to anybody you may leave at home with your crated dog!

Jive – It’s a ball.

(No, my spellcheck isn’t broken, they just all have fun names!)

Kong – Classic, durable treat dispensing toy

Snuffle Mat – You will want to make sure your dog won’t chew on this before putting it in their crate, but these are a great way to entertain your pup.

Kong Stuffed Toy – A lot of dogs use stuffed toys as a comfort item. Daisy loves her stuffed toys, and they help her settle down at bedtime. Again, this is a toy that you need to make sure your dog won’t eat in your absence as it could cause a blockage if your dog eats the stuffing.

What Not to Put in the Crate

There are a lot of things we should put in a crate, but there are a few things we shouldn’t.

Some items may seem like they would provide comfort, but in truth, can either lead to discomfort or can even be dangerous.

Food & Water

Your dog should have had enough food and water before going into the crate to keep them comfortable during your absence.

If we put food and water in our dog’s crate, we only allow them to eat and drink but not use the bathroom.

Also, water can easily be spilled, creating a wet, uncomfortable stay in the crate.

Dental Chews, Raw Hides, and Nylabones

These are not necessarily bad to give your dog when you are home, but when no one can supervise the dog, they can become a dangerous choking hazard.

Also, dental chews and rawhides (or similar toys like cow ears) can cause your dog to become thirsty, and then without access to water that can create an uncomfortable situation.

Imagine eating a bunch of salty fries or chips but not being able to have a drink of water for hours!

Other Things to Make a Dog Crate More Comfortable

Crate Covers

Crate covers help to lower the visual stimulation, which usually can help your dog settle down.

Unfortunately, they don’t work the same for all dogs.

Daisy preferred the covered crates as it creating a den effect, and Sophie hated the cover so she pulled it through the bars and shredded it.

Also, as a bonus, some of the covers are designed to be more aesthetically pleasing, which is always a bonus, especially if the crate is in a high traffic area.

Music

Background noise can help drown out more stimulating sounds like the UPS truck or the barking dog next door.

The calmer we can keep our dogs in their crate the more relaxed and comfortable they will be.

There are also specially formulated music CDs and speakers that are programmed with music and sounds to help to keep dogs relaxed[2].

Examples include:

ICalm Dog 5.0 – Speaker with preprogrammed SD cards.  The music has been proven to help calm anxious dogs.  ICalm was recommended to me by the Veterinary Behavior Specialties of Minnesota clinic[3]. ICalm has different SD cards for varying levels of relaxation.

Pet Acoustics’ Pet Tunes – A speaker programmed with music to help keep dogs relaxed.

Aroma Therapy

There are room diffusers or sprays you can use to help keep your pooch relaxed during crate time.

Even if your dog isn’t stressed in their crate, some of these products can still be of use.

Providing the most relaxing, comfortable environment possible for your dog will only help crate time more enjoyable for them.

Try these options:

Gerrard Larriett Aromatherapy Pet Care – This is a lavender chamomile spray that can be used either on your dog or their bedding.

Sit Stay Zen LLC – Zen Doggie is a unique blend of essential oils designed to keep your dog relaxed.

Safety Tips

Always remove your dogs’ collar before putting them in a wire crate. The tags on a collar or the collar itself can get caught on the crate bars, creating a choking hazard.

Always check the bars on the crate to ensure none of the bars are bent or broken. Some dogs, like Sophie, have issues being in a crate and can bend or break the crate bars. If bars on a wire crate are broken or turned inwards, it could cause puncture wounds.

Final Thoughts

Many working pet parents need to crate their dogs while they are away at work.

Creating the most comfortable environment for your dog while they are in the crate will give you peace of mind knowing that you have provided a safe and comfortable environment for them.

Plus, a comfortable crate will help to get your dog to go inside it more willingly.

Not all dogs need to be crated for life, but crates are a wonderful tool to help keep your dog safe until they are mature enough to be out on their own in your absence.
