Say hello to Team Foxglove, catch them in action at the "Ultra Tournament" in the Aqua Arenas District, 11/21/25! Led by the reclusive Cobalt Zaffre, now back after a 5 month hiatus from tournament fighting! Featuring anonymous gladiators "The Silver Fox" and "Razzle Dazzle", as well as 1v1 Zodiac Tournament newcomer, "The Biohazard" Ali Rhodes! Will Cobalt Zaffre secure his first win since his ultimate 16 tournament win streak was broken at the Gemini Tournament? Or will another team secure the prize and glory?
Hiya everyone! Today (7/23/24) I had an epic chat with a beloved friend about SUL's Arc 2 finale, and I got inspired to make a lil tourney promo image for Arc 2's finale arc ;w;
Ali is actually graciously donated to the SUL universe by my buddy @wolf-of-hearts ! Happy to have inspired a SUL version of one of your guys, and excited to utilize him for some juicy plot someday!

Hazbin Hotel theory under the cut, feel free to ignore.
So we know Viv said one of the “main 6” is going to die, and I want to talk about who I think it is and isn’t going to be and why. Also where I think the next season is going.
Charlie - No. She’s our main character and the whole plot revolves around her. In episode 1 they also said that hell born were immune to the extermination because Lucifer rigged it that way. I do think Adam/Lute would ignore that clause because they hate Charlie so much, but again, main character.
Vaggie - Probably not. We just learned that she’s an angel, which theoretically makes her exempt for extermination as well. I would also assume, though we have no outright proof from the show itself, that angels can’t be killed by other angels. The only reason I could see it being her is that she sacrifices herself for Charlie, but it feels unlikely to me.
Alastor - No. He’s the most well known character from the show, even when I had no interest in Hazbin Hotel I still knew him on sight. It would be really stupid to kill him off so early in the show when we’ve barely explored his story and he hasn’t gone through any kind of arc yet. Also his beef with Vox has been pretty built up and I doubt it’s going to be resolved in the next 2 episodes. There’s also the question of who has him on a leash and that he’s been gone for 7 years, just like Lilith.
Angel - Probably not. Another well known and liked character, with 2 massive songs in episode 4. We haven’t seen him escape Val and heal from that yet. It would really cut the effectiveness of the Vs getting taken out in the plot. He was also the one used as the example in heaven, showing that sinners can change.
Husker - Maybe. Personally, I’m going to be big fucking mad if it is Husker, but I could see it being possible. He’s not as integral to the plot as everyone above, and mostly serves as a lackey for Alastor. I’m just a HuskerDuster shipper now and I want these 2 to be happy OKAY????
The sixth position is what’s really up for debate here, because we have 2 possible options. it could either be Nifty or Sir Pentious, I’m going to give my reasoning for both.
Nifty - Possibly. Nifty doesn’t have a ton of plot relevance, even if I think she’s fun. I put here on the same level as the cat or Razzle and Dazzle almost, background fluff to make the world seem more alive. I’ve seen people saying that Nifty is a physical manifestation of the hotel, in which case it might make sense for it to be her and the loss of their home base in the next extermination. It gives the right amount of upping the stakes for season 2.
Sir Pentious - Most Likely. I like Sir P, he’s goofy and ya know, voiced by My Boy but I think he’s the most likely to die. He’s only at the hotel because he was blackmailed into going in the first place and if he left would be killed by the Vs. He’s just hanging around, not doing much but is very prominently featured in the promo art and generally heavily advertised, but has not so far had a Major Song. The only thing we got from him is Starts With Sorry which is my lowest ranked song so far.
But there’s a whole separate reason I think it’s gong to be the Snake Boy. Alex Brightman voices both him and Adam and I think Adam is about to fall/get betrayed by heaven.
Hear me out on this one. Adam isn’t an angel, he’s described as “the first human soul in heaven” and people are categorized into either “sinners” (hell) or “winners” (heaven) when they die. But does he look like any of the other winners we saw? With his dark color palette, sharp teeth and horns? Not one bit, he looks more like the demons he hates so much. The only other characters of heaven origin that look like him are Lute, Vaggie and presumably other exterminators. Which were very possibly created to look a lot like him, if the fact that he named Vaggie is anything to go off of.
In the court scenes we find out that Adam came up with the whole extermination plan and it is not known throughout heaven that it happens at all. But Adam has now let that cat out of the bag and the others didn’t seem to be happy with the whole situation. I think the other angels are going to go to Sara and make her put an end to extermination, and Sara is going to banish Adam (and possibly Lute) to hell for everything they’ve done.
This goes into my season 2 and later predictions, where Adam and Charlie team up to take down heaven and equalize the system for everyone. Adam is a vindictive douche and would do anything to get payback, and though he hates Charlie will be happy to use her for his own ends. And I think there’d be a lot of comedic gold in having Charlie, Vaggie, Adam and Lute stuck together. And that’s not even talking about Adam and Lilith being forced neck into the same room together when she gets back into the picture.
After this I think there’s several places it could go, like a double backstab on Adam’s part by using the uprising he helped to create as proof that he was right all along and the exterminations were necessary. Or possibly them winning and breaking the cycle for all. I think the second option would tie into the themes of determination, forgiveness, redemption and found family that the show appears to be aiming for.
But that’s all up to Viv and Amazon.
Tagging @love-is-all-you-need-13 because they’re the ones who encouraged me to share. Thank you!

Candle’s whole exit interview but I wrote it while moving
You’re very welcome
Indigo: Welcome dear listeners my name is [idfk what they said] and I could not be more eager for today’s guest. No one carries a more powerful presence, she’s a voice in the wind that I long to capture even the slightest murmur of. In the darkest of times, she offers all the guiding light. Prepare yourself, mortals, for Inanimate Insanity’s own.. Candle!
Candle: Thank you for the hyper aesthetic introduction, Indigo. You truly set the scene in a manner that could not possibly be broken by any manner of interruption.
Indigo: Thanks? Hmm, that’s awfully specific.
Life Ring: Interrupting here! Ahem, to bring you this video’s surf-tastic sponsor, SurfShark VPN!
SurfShark is an app and browser extension that let’s you change your digital location, AKA your computer or phone, to another country! So you can access the internet as if you’re actually there! Ever want to access a website or watch a show that’s unavailable in your territory? Well, with SurfShark VPN, that’ll be no problemo for you! For example, hit shows like Friends, The Office and Twin Peaks aren’t available on Netflix in the United States. But with SurfShark VPN, simply switch your virtual location to the country the show is available in, and voilà! Now they’re totally viewable! SurfShark VPN will also encrypt your online data for that extra razzle dazzle of security when browsing. Waiting to catch that flight at the airport and using that free public Wi-Fi? Well, you wouldn’t want to get hacked, would you? Well, with SurfShark VPN, if anyone is trying to snoop on you online, they won’t be able to see what you’re doing or where you’re doing it all from! And you can use your account on an unlimited amount of devices! Whether it be your Meecintosh, Mephone or, you know, any other real world equivalent! Purchasing a 24 months VPN plan is seriously one of the best options you can find now, and SurfShark has a great offer! Three months extra! Just scan the QR code on the screen or click the link in the description, and use my Promo Code: ANIMATION with a 30-day money-back guarantee! Oo-wee! Alright, now back to the interview!
Candle: And there it is, the return to your carefully crafted atmosphere. Despite the pause, your enthusiasm is already healing the deep wound in my soul.
Indigo: I’m glad to hear it. So, Did you actually feel hurt by this elimination? Cause if-so, it seems like you must’ve held back emotions when you got voted out, even Mephone said you were oddly calm.
Candle: To be honest, I always had sensed my time was drawing near. In fact, I felt as though I was dodging the thralls of time ever since I avoided the elimination in Episode 11. Perhaps I have been running on borrowed time ever since. It was only a matter of time.
Indigo: Oh, so in that case, Do you feel it’s worth staying on Indefinite Island for another chance?
Candle: Oh yes, I will be staying on Indefinite Island. I still feel that I have a purpose here in the game.
Indigo: Fantastic, I’m sure there’s still lots you can do here on the island while you wait, like your aura stand. How do you read auras?
Candle: It’s definitely an art. To put it as simply as I can, I use my third eye chakra to see into the depths of an individual soul. An aura is emitted during this process and the rest flows out naturally. In a sense, it’s communicating with someone as they bear their soul.
Indigo: Ohh! Speaking of which, you’ve had so many great connections out in the game. Do you think you may have made it any farther is Silver Spoon wasn’t a contestant? Or do you think he was helpful in how far you got?
Candle: Who can say? The strings of fate are ever unwinding and intertwining in new ways. I guess it would have just depended upon what type of game I wish to play. I will say this; there was a time I was sure he’d move on like everyone else, but had not. It was.. fascinating.
Indigo: Absolutely. I just want to say that you played a great game! But what is your biggest regret?
Candle: Thank you so much. That really means the world. I suppose it may be how I dealt with Yin-Yang when moving away from the Thinkers or rather, lack thereof, meeting Yin and Yang was definitely a highlight of my journey and I’m so proud of their personal growth. On a separate thought, I wish I would have started to play for myself a little sooner. I was so enthralled with aiding in my teammates’ victories and personal growth, that I may have forgotten about myself for too long. I’ve learned that it’s okay to take time to take care of oneself as well. Healthy body, happy mind, healthy aura, happy life.
Indigo: This question came from a viewer in the middle of an emergency, which is why I saved it until now. Let’s just see here.. Candle? I forgot how to breathe.
Candle: Oh my! Quick, call Dr Fizz!
Indigo: Great idea, I’ll message this listener with your advice long after this interview.
Candle: Praise the Earth Mother
Indigo: Next question. Candle, do you think Silver has any chance of winning the game?
Candle: Yes indeed. He’ll have a one in six chance; who’d have thought?
Indigo: Not me, it’s a steep competition. Did you ever feel threatened by anyone in the game, both strategy-wise and challenge-wise?
Candle: Oh, absolutely! Nickel and Balloon’s baneful friendship made for a formidable alliance, even if Balloon may have been wearing some rose tinted glasses. I’d also say Clover, as her lucky abilities defy the laws of fate and nature altogether. Although, how is one truly to compete with that? She is sweet though.
Indigo: Very sweet indeed. What is your favourite thing to do in your free time?
Candle: This may surprise you, but I do enjoy playing tabletop RPGs. I love creating stories with my friends. My favourite class is warlock.
Indigo: Hm, feels fitting, well with you and your magical abilities. Why is it that when you had swapped bodies with Silver, he couldn’t fly when he put out your flame?
Candle: Oh, Indigo, one cannot learn to fly by pouring water onto oneself.
Indigo: Ahh, of course. Will you teach me how to fly?
Candle: Step one, remove water out of the equation.
Indigo: ..remove water.. also noted. But any insight in general into how your Inner-Flame works?
Candle: Well, ‘works’ implies a sense of ability. As though I’m tapping into some whimsical superpower. However, while the Inner-Flame shares my soul, it carries a mind of its own. That’s why when someone connects to it, they best be wary, lest it consume you. But we’re on pretty nice terms, so we’re fine.
Indigo: Oh.. wow. I’m not quite sure if the flying is quite worth a hassle. Nextly, why is it that you decide to split up Balloon and Nickel? They were fun!
Candle: You mean at the glacier challenge? Well, Silver and I had established ourselves as key players of the Loony-Balloony alliance, as the two who ensured their survival against the Thinkers, the next step was to ensure that we weren’t the lowest on the pecking order. Therefore, poking at the inherently unstable relationship between Balloon and Nickel was our surest bet disrupting their trio with Bot. However, witnessing the aftermath, even I was surprised at how quick their bond was to snap. I sense that if they cannot work this out soon, it will be their downfall.
Indigo: Ooh, spooky. Following all of the craziness in that last vote, do you respect Balloon’s decision for voting for you?
Candle: Yes and no. Yes because he made a strategic choice. Can’t hold it against him if you’re participating in a game like Inanimate Insanity. And no because part of me feels like he may have been swayed into it by a certain someone who is just as strategic.
Indigo: You made plenty of bold strategic decisions as well. How do you feel about the whole villain arc you went through? Did it feel good?
Candle: Goodness! Me, a villain? Was it really that bad of me to want to try and focus on my own needs for once? My teammates had all started to find their own paths, and I felt like I was soon to be left behind. Such as the nature of the game. If being there for myself when I felt lost makes me a villain, then I guess it was an arc for me.
Indigo: I hear you. Speaking of villains, to wrap this up, I’d love to know how it feels to have left Silver Spoon behind. He was very sad to see you were eliminated, not sure if he’s the same.
Candle: Was he now? Interesting. Perhaps we will need to reconnect regarding that.
Indigo: Wonderfully vague as always! Thank you, Candle! Best of luck whenever the rejoin challenge comes along. And to our Inanimate audience, a very special thank you for all of your questions. Curiosity is a powerful thing! Be sure to subscribe to catch the next opportunity to have your question read. This has been Indigo Zircon Rose with IPR, signing off!

Okay I have enough muse rot that I think I will make a promo and put Franky boy back to his own blog. Just that way I can feel less like I’m neglecting things here. I think Jess and Frank are probably the most brain rot I experience so them having their own place will be good. As for here, the muses I'm really feeling are Dylan and Faith, so always feel free to yell at them! Anywho I'm off to go do the thing. Give this the 'ol razzle dazzle (a like) if you want me to follow you from Franky boy<3

i agree with everything else you said, but i do think they’re “pushing it”. that’s the whole purpose of it innit? i mean they wouldn’t have done a pda photo op on dwd release day or those pap pics hugging a few hours after mp content (i don’t remember if it was the first teaser trailer or the official trailer? but u probably know which pics i’m talking about) came out. a pr relationship is meant to be pushed, especially one that serves multiple purposes like this one (pr and closeting).
Well, yeah, you're totally right, I said it, too, anyone else in the room can see it, etc., it's PR directly tied to the promo he's doing for two movies that are wildely different--and he's also not interested in being explicitly out at this moment in time, so PDA ahoy. But those points aside, I still think "pushing it" is a somewhat unusual turn of phrase, given that "pushing it" is how promo goes these days. Honestly, I wish people followed ANYTHING with the kind of breathless fervor they do for whatever's connected to Harry Styles, Inc., because this is normal! Case in point: I (TRAGICALLY) now get People magazine because my beloved Entertainment Weekly print subscription died, and you know what I see in that magazine week in, week out? Stars of current movies on their release days, holding hands with each other if they're dating! Eating food! Grabbing coffee! Smoochin'! It's being pushed in real time, aka, this is fresh! That's normal, actual movie promo at this point in time, and I'm not on TikTok, I'm barely on twitter, so I could be missing some other vector that's making it extra extra, but where else is this being pushed so much that nobody can avoid it if they're not observing "average movie promo razzle dazzle" and "in this essay i'll prove why olivia wilde is a thirsty bitch"? And for the record, she is NOT, but again, you’d have to literally look at any other movie’s promo to get that, and that is not what goes on in 1D land

Hazbin Liveblog: Episode 5
That promo picture is encouraging, let's gooo!
Bedheaded Vaggie is adorable. I love her.
HUSK HAS A FUCK MONDAYS MUG
Everybody seeming concerned except for Niffty is great. Also, frazzled Charlie hair is cute. Me before I brush my hair, tbh.
Have we seen Charlie in just her suspenders in the 'main' series? I rewatched the second half of the pilot more than the first so it's the look I really liked on her, too bad it's showing her as down to her last rope here.
Huh, I was wondering how that worked! I imagine Lucifer, since he can only see the evil in humans, bargained to save Hellborns in exchange for Exterminations being only targeted at the 'just evil' Sinners, since Heaven probably said 'it's this or we kill everyone'.
AMON SPOTTED IN CHARLIE'S CONTACTS... which means that my Aamon is spelled wrong. Oh well. Not gonna bother fixing that, it'll differentiate them if he ever shows up anyway.
I like how all the egg boys have different contacts, but they're still labeled 1, 2, 3, ect. Do they all have their own phones?
Big bombshell that Lilith and Lucifer split, but all I'm looking at is that little drawing of Angel as an actual spider in the background.
Oh, of COURSE Niffty would want him.
I like how, as opposed to the strained faces in the Loo Loo Land portrait, Lilith, Charlie, and Lucifer all genuinely look happy in their portrait- wide grins and happy eyes. There was something at some point, it just... didn't last.
Huh. He really is a goof.
Staring at the giant pile of ducks with 'important things' is great. I'm not sure really how to feel about him yet? I wonder how people who were 'fans' of him think of this. (He's one of the 'I'm waiting for canon to see how I feel before getting attached' characters, like the Vees.)
I always sort of assumed that the building itself came from Lucifer, I don't remember if that was something mentioned at some point or just a headcanon that I had, but now that makes me wonder, does she just have mountains of Princess Cash that she bought it with if he didn't even know?
Huh, he still wears a gold ring on his pinkie finger?
Angel's 'oh god this is cringy but I feel bad for her' expressions are top-notch but I'm wheezing at Husk's flat-mouthed stare and Pent's fucking.... crying cat face. They don't know what to do with Niffty so she's just got a blank smile.
Oh hey, some kind of diagram of the rings! They'll be easier to look at than the shot of the elevator in Ozzie's!
If they only had an hour to clean up, I see why the 'it's a boy!' banner from that one promo clip was there, lmao.
OH MY GOD HE IS TINY, I thought that was just perspective in that one show but he's actually shorter than Vaggie, holy shit
Have we seen Razzle and Dazzle before now? I imagine we just haven't had time to fit them in before now.
Shaking the scepter is funnier than it has any right to be, and Charlie and Husk have basically the exact same expression in the background.
The fact that this is Alastor's first on-screen swear is hysterical. He probably expected Lucifer would know of him but he's taken down a peg- I doubt Luci's paid any attention to individual sinners since the split with Lilith. Beautiful.
I physically cringe into myself with second-hand embarrassment from tv. I did not think the series would provoke that response in me as often as it does, but then again, I don't watch the interview portion of the pilot much, so it probably should have been expected.
Alastor: On one hand, I dislike the idea of being with Charlie. On the other, I need to fuck with this guy for insulting me.
Hey, at least he's not homophobic about it.
You know, from Angel, that feels like he's genuinely trying to make a good impression.
Oh. Oh I normally try to save changing icons but I HAVE to change to Alastor on that pan. My Brand. I just spent like five minutes opening up prime on my computer to get it from there, change it on twitter, and come back here.
I have to say, I did NOT expect the Lucifer song to be Lucifer and Alastor going back and forth but I kind of love it? Also, a flash of the fun neon colors from his pilot song!
Oh my god, I made a comment on the spoiler twitter joking about how it's funny imagining Alastor doing the boring shit an actual facility manager would do but he actually DOES unclog toilets and shit. Fucking incredible. (Granted, it being Niffty means it was probably a special case. Cute that she called him 'sir' though.)
On one hand, a thousand Charlastor cries at this. On the other, him making 'I'm more of a father to her than you are (and I literally met her like two months ago)' his play is a diabolical move.
(I did hear about those leaked character audition sheets that indicated Alastor's age jumped up from his mid-thirties to his mid-forties. My joke about how Angel finds out 17-18 year old Stellaluna has a crush on him and just 'man, kid, daddy issues much?' and she's just 'shut the fuck up' is even stronger now, even though she's actually got a generally-fine relationship with her dads, it's mostly screwed because of outside forces.)
I wonder if that thing going around the Viv might have wanted Weird Al for Lucifer was due to the accordion thing. Probably not, I can see how the personality got her there, but still. Funny.
I feel for Charlie in all this.
Well, Mimzy was unexpected!
I like how Husk looks completely unimpressed while the others are confused. What do you wanna bet she just pops up around Alastor once in a while so he's used to her pulling this?
She's fun! I like her.
Ha, called Husk didn't like her. There's a lot of good background stuff in this episode as the characters react to stuff.
Having Mimzy (as a friend of Alastor's) recount the story fits into things a lot better, and I like the idea that he didn't just go on a giant bloody rampage that first day but started with something more sneaky. I think it fits better.
I was curious if this bit would be in this episode. Alastor's been a bit... tame, in previous episodes? He mostly seemed to aim snark generally or at those who 'deserve' it like Vox, it's great to see him being more of a 'villain' to Husk to really hammer in that while he's different from Val, the comparisons in Loser aren't just surface-level.
Making loan sharks actual sharks is great. Also, Mimzy running over the dude's girlfriend makes me like her even more.
As someone who is Literally Here because a friend told me Alastor was a cannibal after I watched the pilot and it got me interested enough to jot off a oneshot where he shrinks someone and eats them and then start poking around in the fandom, this pleases me down to my very bones.
Huh. With the knowledge that Lucifer and Lilith are separated, Alastor was gone the same amount of time she was, Husk's comment about how he's on a leash too, and now he's genuinely trying to uphold the idea of the hotel in some small part... I really wonder if Lilith did actually task him with this in some way, especially with a comment someone made about how him showing up moments after Charlie called her mom in the pilot might not be just how the scenes shook out.
Oh, this song is so sweet. Lilith having no face in the flashback is A Choice though, especially with how her card is faceless with just a mouth as well. (Which may even tie back to the idea of her working with Alastor- it's the same sort of grin he has.)
The animation here is... a little wonky though. It feels like it's a bit 'movement for the sake of movement' again, wanting it to look fluid but without certain direction. The song itself is lovely, though.
Vaggie's got something to hide, doesn't she? Does... does Charlie not know if she's a fallen angel?

I think the fact that the show is coming back in March is more of an issue than the Wednesdays timeslot. Ratings in the spring are always lower than in the fall/winter. But then they did the same thing last year with both Flash and S&L. For a show that they were allegedly trying to make the crown jewel, a March series premiere was detrimental to S&L. I think the CW schedule never makes sense. I also think that TF and Riverdale are coming back this late bc they started filming much later too.
Keeping it all the way 💯 ALL of its an issue. Lack of promo, a weird standalone crossover that’s probably going to end on some crazy cliffhanger that won’t be addressed again until March. The midseason ‘break’ being the same amount of time as the actual break between seasons which is insane. And then after all that confusion they decide to add a day of the week change in there for a little extra razzle dazzle to confuse the viewers even more.

I don’t want to be dramatic but I am super concerned for louis’ career in terms of his music, like this whole year was so fucking weird, all we got was a bunch of cryptic shit I stil don’t know what the hell 369 is about or faith in the future or even what the hell I’m supposed to have faith in like baby we ain’t getting any music you are mia most of the time and when you pop up it’s to get stalked at the studio by the same freaks, doing some stunts for a little razzle dazzle. Nothing is making any sense at this point I am positive we ain’t getting music until 2023 and like what even is the point why am I here ? All we get is a divided fandom people starting shit almost everyday for no reason and merch with messages that go no fucking where, I don’t even get excited when I see him say something cryptic anymore. I’m sad because I can see so many people leaving and finding new things to like. The most loyal Louies are now checking out and who can blame them. It’s sad his fandom is being replaced my a bunch of awful people but it is what it is at this point. I love him with all my heart but I won’t lie I am slowly checking out myself, I’m supposed to enjoy being a fan not get sad about him and shit , it’s even worst be used your like who do you blame for this because we are supposed to be believe that he is now independent but then what like is dude choosing to literally bring his career to the ground on his own accord but like why the hell is the same people who can’t do right by him still around like was I wrong this whole time like does he like those people and is satisfied with how things are going. Sorry but I am so angry I don’t think I’ve been this upset in the last ten years the way that am these days I’m so confused and it makes me feel miserable for him and myself
As far as people leaving, I don’t disagree that people are, but I also think it’s important to keep in mind that some people just focus on other interests while nothing is happening for an extended period of time and will then be back once Louis does something. Unless COVID ruins everything, he will be going on tour in a little more than a month and there will actually be real content for people, which I think will be hugely uplifting for a bitter, disappointed fanbase.
It’s also really frustrating to me to not see things change and to see that Louis is still with all of the same shitty people who half ass everything they do and I’ve questioned myself whether he’s just given up and resigned himself to this fate, but when you see how Louis responds when he does well charting, I still find it very hard to believe that he wants this for himself. Like.....it just doesn’t make any sense that he would be content with mediocrity and no promo when he has the potential for so much more. We KNOW that he’s thrilled when his music does well. We KNOW that he wants to tour the world, which is not possible without an extensive fanbase because it costs a lot of money. We KNOW that he’s called out himself the lack of promo and label support publicly, which is not something that he would have done if he was content with the work they did.
So if nothing is changing with his career and he’s still not getting anything good when it comes to that, I continue to think that there is something going on behind the scenes that is causing this. And that affects how I think about the stunts too. I am equally annoyed with Louis about how he’s playing along with this stuff and about a lot of his behavior over the last year, quite frankly. but it doesn’t change the fact that the entire situation seems very bizarre. If he was getting promo for his music - and I’m not even talking Harry-level of promo, I’m talking about regular ass promo that any artist would receive by a label who wants to make money - and the stunts were still happening, I would wonder much more whether this is just how it will be forever. But that’s not the case and his career is still being sabotaged and/or disregarded by the very people who should be wanting to make money off of him and promoting him for their own benefit as well as their own. Just look at both of his festivals in the last year. And that means something is still off with Louis in general.
It might help to just step away and focus on other things until tour begins because I do think having real, non-stalker and non-stunt and non-tweet content will make a huge difference as far as fandom morale goes.

Indonesian filmmaker Joko Anwar is making moves in a surging industry. He directed the first season of HBO Asia’s Jakarta-set supernatural series Halfworlds and some episodes of its new horror series Folklore. He joins other local auteurs enjoying both domestic and international acclaim for movies like last year’s Marlina the Murderer in Four Acts, directed by Mouly Surya. The so-called “satay Western” about a wronged woman out for revenge won raves at 2017’s Cannes Film Festival, and is the nation’s pick to compete for Best Foreign Language Film at next year’s Academy Awards.
Filmmaking in Indonesia dates back more than a century, and movies were first shown there in 1900. The current resurgence comes after last century’s bumpy journey for an art form that never totally took hold of audiences’ imagination.
We hear about a once-rich Indonesian cinema culture, but it was an illusion,” Anwar told Southeast Asia Globe.
He’s referring to the sagas of Sundanese legends that were popular with Indonesian audiences in the 1920s, but were told from the point of view of the Dutch directors who made them on location in what was then the Dutch East Indies. In the early 1930s, elaborate romantic melodramas were all the rage, but they were created by Chinese entrepreneurs who were flush from the Shanghai movie boom and extending their market around the region. Heavily financed foreign productions discouraged local film production, which was scattershot and based mainly in Jakarta. The Great Depression and Dutch taxes made this dream all but impossible by the mid-1930s.
A handful of enterprising filmmakers dipped their toes in the water in the 1940s – just before film production was banned under the Japanese occupation. Government-approved political films saturated the post-Independence era until a string of indie domestic films enjoyed huge success in the 1980s. The 1988 political biopic Tjoet Nja’ Dhien was the first Indonesian film to be invited to Cannes. Soon after that victory, local filmmaking took a big hit when the government lifted a ban on the screening of foreign films. Indonesian moviemakers couldn’t compete with blockbusters from Hollywood and Hong Kong. During Southeast Asia’s economic crisis of 1997, Indonesia’s economy tanked, along with box office sales and investment in domestic film production. Just six movies were made in Indonesia in 1999.
The industry has been recovering since the mid-2000s, and in most Indonesian cities, air-conditioned multiplexes are seeing relatively healthy sales. John Riady, an Indonesian entrepreneur and editor at large of the Jakarta Globe, describes Indonesia as “the most invisible country in the world”, referring to the rarity of good English writing about the country and poor tourism marketing. It’s home to a quarter of a billion people, and its capital, Jakarta, is a gargantuan tech-obsessed metropolis that sends more tweets daily than any other city on the planet. Metrics like that are impressive, but local cinema isn’t quite keeping pace.
“Indonesians used to have a closer emotional relationship with movies and cinemas, mainly because there weren’t many alternatives to movie-watching at that time, and cinemas were not in high-end shopping malls,” explained Anwar. “Today, going to a cinema requires more effort since most of them are inside places which the average Indonesian person – someone who lives outside of Jakarta, for example, or the average Jakartan who doesn’t visit luxury malls – has no access to.”
Anwar, 42, is a solidly built man who dresses and talks with the confidence of someone who tours the international film-festival circuit and enjoys a lucrative career. He grew up in a poor part of Sumatra and spent much of his childhood watching horror and kung-fu movies. In 2003, he wrote Indonesia’s first gay-themed film, Arisan!, and went on to write and direct a slew of films throughout the 2000s. His 2007 film, Kala, was lauded at the New York Asian Film Festival. His 2009 thriller, Forbidden Door, was screened at film festivals all over the world, and the Hollywood Reporter compared it to the work of Alfred Hitchcock.
The biggest challenge faced by Indonesian cinema is getting audiences in seats, Anwar explained.
“There are too few cinemas, compared to the increasing interest in cinema-going. For the past three years, Indonesia has enjoyed a [rise in] ticket sales for locally produced films, and it seems like we are going to surpass that also this year. However, ticket prices have crept up to keep pace with demand, and this puts a visit to the cinema out of the reach of most Indonesians, who either don’t have or can’t justify spending that kind of money on a movie ticket. There’s also the fact that the older traditions of movie-going are gone, and so unless you’re an upwardly mobile Jakartan, cinema isn’t on your radar at all. You watch TV. You talk to your family.”
Anwar then produced something unexpected: the 2015 dystopian A Copy of My Mind, set in Jakarta during the tense 2014 presidential elections. The urban drama and love story about a low-rent salon worker and a guy who writes subtitles for pirated DVDs featured Jakarta as a character more than a setting.
“My vision of Jakarta in A Copy of My Mind was meant to be a love letter to the city I moved to 20 years ago,” said Anwar. “Back then, I was penniless but I fell in love with the city right away. It was a very diverse place and people were more tolerant. Preachers weren’t spreading hate in mosques. Nightlife was colourful. We even had a gay film festival – imagine that, in the world’s most Muslim-populated country!”
Unlike the Hong Kong of Wong Kar-wai or the Madrid of Almodóvar, Anwar’s Jakarta wasn’t venerated, there was no background razzle-dazzle. In A Copy of My Mind, Jakarta is a bleak and ominous place, akin to the Phnom Penh of the Cambodian filmmaker Rithy Panh.
“Now, it feels like I don’t know Jakarta anymore. I believe that the 2014 presidential campaign started a kind of hateful atmosphere in the city, and in the country,” he said. “There were so many black campaigns launched, and they seriously damaged our capability for logic and cultural expression. Now hate has been normalised: you hear it from religious preachers, on the street, even in schools by teachers. With A Copy of My Mind, I guess I wanted to make a time capsule of that one particular year so 20 years from now, when things get better or worse, we can watch that film and remember what happened, and reflect.”
There are no film schools in Indonesia, but it does have five filmmaking education programmes at universities and institutes. It has just over 1,000 cinema screens, compared to nearly 15,000 in the comparable economy of India, which has a robust national cinema culture. In the Philippines, the industry employs a quarter of a million people and 50 million Filipinos go to the movies every year.
So why does Indonesia lag behind?
“First of all, good and entertaining movies in Indonesia are so rare that momentum in viewership can’t be sustained,” said Anwar. “This makes it hard to argue for financing, it makes it hard to motivate people to join the industry or take up training, and human resources in Indonesian filmmaking are already so rare. This results in a lot of untrained people making well-intentioned but poor-quality films. But most films are likely to get a theatrical release to fill cinema schedules, thus glutting the market with low-grade product – and this turns audiences off even further.”
Anwar hopes the current successes signal a turning point. He spoke of the increase in new movie theatres and educational opportunities, including the workshops and training offered through the government’s Creative Economy Agency.
When Southeast Asia Globe caught up with him, Anwar was in post-production after a long shoot on location in Jakarta and West Java for his next film, Gundala, based on 1980s Indonesian superhero comic books. Promo shots and poster art for it are plastered on Indonesian Facebook pages and in that deluge of Jakartan tweets.
After his work with HBO Asia, it seemed possible that Anwar would follow the money and work internationally, but Gundala suggests the exact opposite.
“I believe what’s important is making films that you can inject your own personality into, your views of life,” he said. “I think I will be happy making movies anywhere, as long as I am doing movies which I care about, with stories that I believe in, and with interesting characters. It still has to be a personal experience for me. As long as I’m allowed to do that, making movies anywhere will still be bliss.”
