Murder by Memory (CBR17 #11)
About a month ago a large sinkhole opened in the interstate a few miles from where I live, and it has wrecked absolute chaos on my commute since as it closed the eastbound lanes of said interstate, and the detours send everyone directly into my commute. My peaceable 35-minute drive to work has bloomed to over an hour and is unpredictable so I’m leaving even earlier to ensure I get to work on time…

I DID IT!!!!
I finished Book Riot's 2023 Read Harder Challenge!
Tumblr media
I've never done one of these before and I'm glad I did. It definitely pushed me to read some books and some formats I might not have otherwise. I will probably just pick a few categories to complete next year. Between the challenge and my two bookclubs, my own reading for pleasure took a bit of a hit.
I've listed the prompts and what I read below the cut if you're interested!
Feel free to ask or DM me if you want to know which of these I'd actually recommend (spoiler alert: it's not all of them lol)
Read a novel about a trans character written by a trans author.
"For the Love of April French" by Penny Aimes
Read one of your favorite author’s favorite books.
"We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves" by Karen Joy Fowler
Read a book about activism.
"How to Do Nothing" by Jenny Odell
Read a book that’s been challenged recently in your school district/library OR read one of the most-challenged/banned books of the year by a queer and/or BIPOC author.
"All Boys Aren't Blue" by George M Johnson
Read a completed webcomic.
"Check, Please!" by Ngozi Ukazu
Finish a book you’ve DNFed (did not finish).
"The Warmth of Other Suns" by Isabel Wilkerson
Listen to an audiobook performed by a person of color of a book written by an author of color.
"The Warmth of Other Suns" by Isabel Wilkerson
Read a graphic novel/comic/manga if you haven’t before; or read one that is a different genre than you normally read.
"Adulthood is a Myth" by Sarah Anderson
Read an independently published book by a BIPOC author.
"Heartbeat Braves" by Pamela Sanderson
Read a book you know nothing about based solely on the cover.
"Just As You Are" by Camille Kellogg
Read a cookbook cover to cover.
“Go-to Dinners” by Ina Garten
Read a nonfiction book about BIPOC and/or queer history.
"The Warmth of Other Suns" by Isabel Wilkerson
Read an author local to you.
"You Could Make This Place Beautiful" by Maggie Smith
Read a book with under 500 Goodreads ratings.
"Viviana Valentine Gets Her Man" by Emily Edwards
Read a historical fiction book set in an Eastern country.
"Celestial Bodies" by Johka Alharthi
Read a romance with bisexual representation.
"Highly Suspicious and Unfairly Cute" by Talia Hibbert
Read a YA book by an Indigenous author.
"Warrior Girl Unearthed" by Angeline Boulley
Read a comic or graphic novel that features disability representation.
"Invisible Differences" by Julie Dachez
Read a nonfiction book about intersectional feminism.
"This Will Be My Undoing" by Morgan Jenkins
Read a book of poetry by a BIPOC or queer author.
"Call Us What We Carry" by Amanda Gorman
Read a book of short stories.
"You Think It, I'll Say It" by Curtis Sittenfeld
Read any book from the Ignyte awards shortlist/longlist/winner list.
"Light From Uncommon Stars" by Ryka Aoki

and also "putting everyone in a simulation will make it all ok 👍" and also "let's park next to this random system's sun" and also "we can't live on our own planet because of our own folly" and so on
#and also an inablity to accept the inevitable...etc etc#i thought of some more but then i forgot them 😋#originally wanted to post this with other sillies but then i was like. well i dont wanna spoil anyone on either a these games so erm. ya#nine sols#outer wilds#nine sols spoilers#outer wilds spoilers#outer wilds echoes of the eye#echoes of the eye spoilers#echoes of the eye#if youve played nine sols could i recommend outer wilds: a space exploration game where u play as a cute and short lookin alien whos#unraveling the mysteries of their solar system although there isnt any combat and although there are horrors theyre not like. well.#nobodies bein harvested thats for sure. and its very much about the story#and if youve played outer wilds uhh. i. dont really know if i can recommend nine sols even though i Can summarize it as a game where u do#explore and there is space and u Are an alien (from a humans pov) and you Are cute and short (from a humans pov)(until u learn the horrors)#and there Are horrors but erm. well. shrug emote. it Is a combat game thats the primary reason#the horrors are less the horrors of space and how easy it is for you to die and the idea of said causes of death and also the unknown. and#more the sins of some REALLY fucked up cats. ethically dubious science sins. actual guts bein spilled. i mean i aint actin like the warning#of the game id recommend lookin those up. sure is a game tho (i cried)(just like w outer wilds)#feels like i could recommend a non combat game to a combat game player easier than the other way round#the theoretical combat game player would be capable of playing a non combat game right#feels harder to imagine the other way around. then again i Did find outer wilds mechanically difficult at times in a way that combat games#can challenge me. so. shrug#all that matters is if u enjoyed the dialogue n interactions in nine sols...if u didnt vibe w that then im unsure how much outer wilds woul#vibe for you. etc etc#idk why i started typing up a whole ass recommendation in the tags. anyway have at ye#idk who'd read this far but i salute you FSDHLFSDHKSFDH

Vezok & Vezon + Fenrakk
In my chibi-pudgy style because I can! I have a soft spot for characters that have the slightest reference to a Jekyll-Hyde dynamic x) I meant to draw them for so long! Fenrakk wasn't planned but then I caved in and here we are pfff

The Sunshine x Sunshine Protector is such a beloved dynamic to me and I've used it with almost every character I've written for to some degree. Yet, whenever I think about it with Anaxa in particular I just find it so... boring? It feels like wasting his potential ngl.

Do you enjoy underfell? I thought you disliked aus /genq
i don't dislike the concept of AUs itself, I'm just not a fan of like... the subculture that spawned around them in the UT fandom specifically and how it eventually took over almost all canon content (especially when it limits itself to the bros)
i like aus visually! i am an artist at heart after all. it's just that, if I'm going to care about them as stories and not just fun design ideas, my bar is uhh almost impossibly high the further you move from canon lolol.

All Systems Red (CBR16 #36)
Back in November of 2018 I joined the cult of Murderbot. After I had read and loved The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers Rochelle and Ashley had told me that Murderbot needed to be next up in my reading of contemplative, character driven space opera. I was immediately in love. I’ve kept up with the furthering adventures of Murderbot in the intervening years and had decided…

Books I Read In 2022 (and by read I mean actually liked)
Kristy and the Missing Child (The Baby-Sitters Club Mysteries #4) by Ann M. Martin
Honestly, the kids on my team would forget their heads if they weren’t screwed on.
⭐⭐⭐⭐
Spoilers Below!
I have never read this book before and the only book with Bart that I've read before is Stacey's Ex-Best Friend, which only mentions him twice. So to see Kristy have this big crush really came outta nowhere for me, I spent the entire book wrapping my head around the fact that Kristy 'boys are gross' Thomas has a crush on a boy, but good for her because Bart actually seems pretty nice.
Mrs. Kuhn unloading on Kristy was kinda screwed up if I'm being honest, some of these parents have no sense of boundaries. If I were Kristy's mom I wouldn't give two shits about our friendship and just go off on that woman. But I did appreciate her insistence that Kristy should stop feeling guilty about what happened to Jake because my heart did go out to Kristy.
I also appreciated that this book discussed what children should do when someone tries to grab them because not every child has an adult in their life to tell them what to do, so I think it was a fantastic idea to include this in the book. I personally think that these aren't just safety rules that apply to kids, anyone can benefit from doing whatever it takes to get someone to notice that you are in danger. I wish I knew all of this as a kid, it's honestly a miracle that I'm still alive.
I don't care what anyone says, Mary-Anne's b-plot of nearly failing home-ec was the funniest thing from any of these books. Everyone torn between being amused by the irony of it all but also terrified because Mary-Anne is losing her mind was hilarious.
Things that I would give a limb to be adapted to the Netflix series:
"A big brother can be a big help when your family is splitting up. Believe me, I know." Well, you know what Kristy, all I've seen your older brothers do is flirt with your underage friends, so show me these big brothers that you speak of.
"Then I held up my hands and started to conduct them." Kristy being the conductor in this grass orchestra or whatever you wanna call it was truly the most Kristy thing that she could've done, and it's such a fun moment that it doesn't even have to be a part of this specific book being adapted, it can truly be a part of any of them.
"Adam! My dearest darling favourite triplet-with-a-name-beginning-with-A!" Mallory is me as a big sister, truly.

Something I've really really enjoyed about Kakarot is that they absolutely nailed the element of perspective. The sense of scale, especially while you're learning the game and controls, is fantastic.
The Oozaru are fucking terrifying. They're massive, and Vegeta is so fast in his and the radius of his attacks are almost inescapable, especially since it's early in the game and you (the player) are still learning the mechanics. It's really a very fun added context for why Saiyans are so feared in this universe (especially since you only ever have to fight one at a time, and Saiyans are usually deployed and transformed in groups).
The power scaling is done very well too, I think, while still keeping the story accessible to players who aren't well versed. It's great at offering a sense of danger and an idea how steep the climb is for the characters (assuming you play through the story and don't grind hardcore in between), even when you're very strong in the game. I think that's sometimes a thing that's difficult to convey in comics and animation, since we kind of see the same kinds of fights all the time, but with interactive media it's really cool to see how the odds stack in a more practical way.

Dionysus: *throws cards that describe the situation in its different layers and how ones should work behind others to reach the goal another card symbolizes, which is exactly what I've been meaning to achieve*
