୨୧ he holds the box up to his face almost all the way home, talking to the hamster and smiling at it through the air holes

♡ yeah, he loves it SO much! he always has the hamster in his hands or letting it crawl all over him as sits on the couch and you laugh whilst watching, not to mention the hamster ball? he thinks they’re so fucking funny for some reason

୨୧ watching the hamster move around the room in a little plastic ball just tickles something in his brain and he can’t get over it, you’ve caught him just staring down at the fast moving ball with a huge smile on his face and the most contagious laugh leaving his mouth every few seconds

♡ he absolutely does not smoke around the hamster!

୨୧ at first he was a little grouchy he’d have to go to the window to blow smoke out but anything for his tiny rodent child and their health

♡ to be honest, he doesn’t even really like smoking in the house at all now that you have the hamster!

୨୧ so most of the time, you both just go outside for a smoke! he’ll pull you down onto his lap whilst sitting on a chair with an unlit cigarette hanging from his lips, letting you light it for him as he strokes your back

♡ when you go to bars together, if you’re sat across from him, he always plays footsies with you…

୨୧ he literally cannot help it, there’s just an urge inside of him to have a foot war with you all the time when you’re across from him and he takes it so seriously with a big smile on his face

The care and keeping of bitties is a bit more like rabbits than like hamsters or gerbils: They're social creatures, like us, and they like company. They do better when they're included in part of your family instead of relegated to a specific section of the living area. That being said, they do like having their own dedicated space for privacy to retreat to if they get overwhelmed!

It's like having a tiny roommate who's sort of also your dependent.

Personally I lean towards the larger AUs so I feel more confident handling them because the tiny ones make me so nervous when people talk about a 2 inch skeleton sharing their bed (my guy tops out at 14 inches, and a lot of 1:3 scale doll furniture/novelty seasonal decor furniture fits him just fine), but they do have a range so you want to take into account what kind of space you have for them and how much time you're willing to dedicate to carrying them around and whether or not you're the kind of person who's going to get one of those chest wraps everyone's putting their cat in on tiktok to tote a small skeleton around while you're doing chores. If you're rescuing it can be a gamble who your personality is going to click with, so you may want to start with an all-purpose beanbag/repurposed squishmallow until you know what scale you're working with.

And you can't skimp on the entertainment! Don't just give them your phone and turn them into ipad monsters! They like puzzles, and crafts, and books, and if they MUST be home alone for long periods or they're just not feeling the other options, you can even get little desktop video game arcade consoles like pac man or even a DDR machine that works just like the big version for not too much. ~20-30 bucks for hours of entertainment.

“Basic” Sansies are great for first time keepers, since they’re mostly content to cuddle and snooze and are okay with being left alone for long periods like work hours. Papyrus-types will tell you they’re also okay being left alone but they get anxious and lonely more easily and just won’t cop to it out of fear of losing your approval. Papyrus-types (LilBros and other swap variants not included) tend to be high energy and high stimulation, and can be picky eaters from what I hear. They can be a bit fussy about their surroundings and like their spaces to be clean, but they’re lovely companions if you have the time and energy to dedicate to them. I have never witnessed less-conditional love than a Papyrus-type for their caretaker, regardless of skill level or number of mistakes made. That being said, I don’t personally recommend them solo for beginners on account of the fact that they may not speak up if they’re unhappy for fear of losing your approval and begin to deteriorate without notice. If you're a beginner caretaker and absolutely MUST have a Papyrus-type, please also include a Sansy-type with him. Sansies can act as mediator and translator when it comes to anxious Papyrus-types getting what they need.

Gary Rennell as a Dad

Gaz is adorable to imagine as a dad. I can’t deny how great of a father he’d be. I do see Gary having a big family, but for this post, he’s going to have three kids.

❤️ Gary is a nervous wreck while waiting for his kids to be born. He is constantly pacing back and forth, asking nurses and doctors the most ridiculous things, experiencing every emotion imaginable. It’s more of a rough time for him than the mom. And, yes, he most definitely fainted at the birth of his first child.

❤️ This is one of the most interactive dad’s there is. He has formula stains on himself, can change a diaper with his eyes closed, knows every song to every children’s show, has the babies down for sleep in less than five minutes. You name it, he’s mastered it.

❤️ Gary as a girl dad is such a sweet sight. He took on the role as the honorary tea party host. Complete with pink boa, tiara, and pink heels. If you don’t believe this little girl doesn’t have Gary wrapped around her little finger, you’re crazy. She asks him to jump and he asks how high.

❤️ Gary as a boy dad is something he was quite scared of at first. Since he didn’t have his dad around, he treats his son how he wished his dad would have treated him. Similarly to his daughter(s), this little boy is the sparkle in Gary’s eye.

❤️ Yes, Chelsea decorated the kids’ nurseries/rooms. Yes, Lottie also babysits when no one else is available. Yes, Noah is their full-time babysitter, other than Nan on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

❤️ The first time he brought his kids to work, he got up in his crane with them, and asked someone to take their picture. That is the picture he has in his wallet: his kids and him inside cranes. It fills his heart with so much love.

❤️ Do not go to Gary if you: have a cut and are bleeding, broke a bone, just threw up, etc. He will not only gag, but potentially pass out. He can’t handle bodily fluids like that. The only part of parenting he hates.

❤️ Nan babysits every Tuesday and Thursday. The kids absolute love going to Nan’s house. It’s still tradition even as they grow up to spend the night there twice a week. Gary doesn’t even have to ask, they just want to go.

❤️ Gary’s son’s first words were “oi, oi.”

❤️ Just like Bruno, Gary is a loud and proud dad. He is clapping the loudest, hollering the loudest, front and center for all the pictures and videos. This man knows the weekly schedule for the family.

❤️ Dating Gary’s children consists of: acts of intimidation that turn cringe (for his daughters), embarrassing stories, inappropriate jokes, and curfew being upped an hour. He’s a lot more chill about it than some may think.

❤️ The family has two dogs, two cats, a rabbit and a hamster.

❤️ Gary is the type of dad that you can go to him with anything and he will do everything he can to help you. Flunked a class? He knows you tried, and will reassure you that you didn’t disappoint him. Have a bully? He had them too and he will get them to stop, even if he has to scare them stupid. Broke something valuable? He can fix it or replace it. Got dumped? He’ll remind you of your worth and help you heal.

❤️ Christmas is a big day for everyone, but it is a HUGE day in the Rennell household. They all have matching pajamas, they watch Christmas movies before bed on Christmas Eve, and Gary is in charge of eating the cookies and milk that the kids left out. He even takes their letters to Santa and replaces them with one he wrote as Santa. For Christmas Day, they go to Nan’s and have a big dinner with everyone in the family. This family’s Christmas/Holiday cards are A+ every single year! 🎄

Everything that's quick and easy, usually have to fit in certain boxes, nothing dry, easy to swallow and tastes good.

I really like this pasta dish my mom made once when something quick and easy was needed without needing to go shopping. Creamy pasta with peas (i love peas 🫛😻😻😻) it checks all the boxes. Takes roughly ten minutes (boiling the pasta)

I also have this dish that was not intended to be eaten that way and my former teacher would raise her eyebrows if she knew. Basically its the filling to a pastry dish that I just eat "raw". It's good tho 👀👀👀.

Oh boi oh boi, i absolutely love A Nightmare before Christmas, I watch that movie whenever I am down or during Pre-halloween-Winter Holidays, that movie just doesn't gets bad. HAMSTER CARE INFO DUMP

If you followed me for invader zim or mcr or smthing, ignore this ig, Hamsters are one of my special interests, and in honor of getting a new little guy, I wanna do a little proper care post :D

HAMSTER CARE 101:

although little, hamsters need at least 460 inches of floor space in their enclosure. This does not include ramps and shelves. Hamsters are burrowers, not climbers.

Most pet stores sell too smal cages, so I suggest making bin cages, (had one for my first hamster) or Niteangel has some nice ones. (I have one rn for my Hamster Beef, Dib will also receive one.)

FOOD AND WATER:

I recommend getting a food mix, as opposed to pellets. They’re more likely to provide the proper amount of nutrients. You should feed your hamster fresh fruits and veggies, such as cucumber, carrots, spinach, bell pepper, apple, etc. DO NOT feed them garlic, citrus, onions, or most processed foods.

you can use a water bottle or water dish, they need new water everyday. I use a water bottle because he kept knocking over the dish I provided, it’s really just personal preference. Also I recommend providing forage mix and sprays!

SUBSTRATES:

paper bedding for the most part is safe. NO SCENTED BEDDING. I avoid useing wood, even thought there are safe wood shavings, I just find that some times there’re mixed with unsafe wood. THEY NEED AT LEAST 6 INCHES. THE MORE THE BETTER. Also, Sand! Child play sand, reptile sand with no calcium, all work! Some hamster sands are marketed as dust, and these can be very harmful to their lungs, so don’t give them bath dust.

WHEEL AND TOYS:

They must have a wheel! Bigger the better! At least 12 inches for Syrians, and at least 8 inches for dwarfs. (Make sure it’s not wire.) I personally avoid useing a play ball, as their little toes can get caught in the vents. I opt for a play pen instead, I use my dogs old play pen, and fill it with toys and activities. They also need lots of chew toys.

And that’s pretty mush the bare minimum for hamsters! Remember to do your own research, and also that hamsters are not beginner pets! They can be complicated, but super fun. :) this is by no means all you need to know for hamster care, and there’s tons more you should know before adopting. This was just some basic care tips. :D

Hello, I'm thinking of getting a Chinese dwarf hamster and I want to make sure they will have the best home I can offer with the space I have. I admittedly haven't had a hamster since I was a child. What would you suggest?

This post will probably get long so I'm going to put in a break shortly! I'll title sections so you can skim fr whatever info you'd like easily!!!

Chinese (Dwarf) Hamster Cages

(just some random stuff before we get into husbandry):: To preface, while Chinese Hamsters aren't 'technically' dwarf hamsters, they are still referred to as such in pet stores and in most resources outside of the hamster community, but when I refer to a Chinese Hamster it's the same thing!

Out of the 5 species of hamsters in captivity this is also the hardest one to find, they generally don't sell well due to their mouse like appearance (which imo makes them the most interesting species), as well as because they are a almost exclusively solitary species unlike 'true' dwarfs. If you're buying from a pet store be sure they actually have some before you go, if through a breeder or a rescue it'll probably be much easier (but if from a breeder/rescue definitely check their minimum adoption requirements as they vary from organization to organization).

The males have.. very large testicles. It looks very silly but does not affect them so do not worry if your hamster is really silly looking, it adds to their charm.

All husbandry advice will be based on US standard, please note that the recommended standard often differs wildly from country to country, I will be referencing both the CHA and the OHC though as the CHA sucks and is full of insane people who are literally a clique and will come for people not in their clique (specifically referring to breeders). The OHC has a majority of the same breeders on their list but the people who run the association itself are less insane.

The minimum recommended size for a healthy happy dwarf hamster is 450sq inches, or at least 30"x15" (per https://ontariohamsters.ca/). Lets look at some options:

Bin cage: These are incredible since they're sooo versatile. If you decide you'd like to make a bin cage (using a storage bin with added ventilation) this will be the cheapest housing option. The smallest recommended size is a 110 qt sterilite bin, but any size larger in that brand or the largest IKEA SAMLA bin are also acceptable! If you have the space to do a larger enclosure, also look at 200 qt bins and xmas tree bin. The main thing to avoid is bins with wheels underneath, the plastic over the wheels bumps up inside and makes for a great spot to chew and escape from!

Tank: Tanks are great for allowing for the most bedding possible, and functionally prevent any messes the ham could make. You'll want to look for a 40 gallon at least, if you have a petco near you they regularly (like 5-6 times a year) do a sale where they offer half off on all their tanks (its going on right now actually) so a 40 would be $60 currently. 55 gallon tanks are technically smaller, but they are very tall and allow for a LOT deeper bedding and more climbing enrichment, and 60 and 75 gallon tanks have the same floor space as each other, but the 75 is taller. If you decide on a tank you'll need to order the tank lid online for any size over a 40 (sometimes pet stores have the 40 lid in stock), make sure to get a reptile terrarium lid!

Similarly there are also Acrylic and wooden enclosures. You'll want them to have the ventilation on the lids or very high up on the sides to prevent them from attempting to escape, but I recommended looking into the brands Bucatstate, Niteangel, and Pawhut (before you buy though look for 'clones' of the cages by niteangel because you can find cheaper than their prices for almost everything they sell).

Wire Cage: These are awesome for allowing for hanging enrichment like toys and shelves, but chinese hamsters are very small so you need bar spacing of at most 3/8". The Prevue 528, Savic Hamster Heaven Metro, and Crittertrail Super Habitat are all awesome options! These can all be purchased online, but Petco sells the Crittertrail Super Habitat and the Hamster Heaven can also be purchased from many Pet Supermarket locations if you have those near you!

That's a Prevue 528 set up below!

Connectable Cages: If you were wanting a Syrian Hamster (also called golden hamster, teddy bear, black bear, fancy hamster, etc) these wouldn't be possible at all since the tubes cannot accommodate a syrian hamster, and they are honestly HELL to deal with because occasionally they'll pee in the tubes and you'll have to take it all apart to clean it, but you do technically have one option for connectable cages with dwarf hamsters if it interests you. The Crittertrail Super Habitat is about 500sq inches, and features 1 connection port. You can attach connectable cages to that as long as you can maintain them. You don't really want to do only small cages connected to each other, hamsters may be burrowers in the wild but they are also major explorers. If their entire enclosure simulates a burrow they will want to escape that burrow to explore. You want a large main enclosure to allow them to have a 'surface', and to give them the option to burrow on their own (the small ones never have enough room for bedding ugh). The pros to connectable cages is that you can have different areas that are easier to maintain, and chinese hamsters are quite agile so they tend to enjoy being able to explore. If you decide to ever use tubes in your cage, try not to have any straight up and down sections larger than 3-4 inches, if they fall within the tube from any higher they're able to get injured quite easily.

(sorry couldn't find many good set up pics for this option since this style of enclosure has fallen out of style in the last few years for easier, larger setups)

hey, i have a husbandry question if that’s alright- i usually use about a half-and-half mix of carefresh and aspen shavings in my hamster and gerbil enclosures, but when i took my new hamster in for a wellness exam recently the small animal vet told me any wood shavings can cause respiratory infections and other complications (not just cedar and pine). i’ve never had issues with it so i’m curious if this is something you’ve ever run into.

I admittedly haven’t done a ton of research into it but here is what I know (and anyone reading please correct me if something is incorrect!)

Dusty bedding is an irritant and can lead to sneezing to remove the dust from airways though that in itself isn’t a respiratory infection. However inhaling dust Could cause micro tears in the nasal passages which can open the animal up to infection. Dust can also cause inflammation in the lungs and nasal passages which can lead to other health problems. But ALL beddings contain dust- including paper. If possible, it’s recommended to take your bedding outside, put it in a bag with tiny holes in it (like a laundry bag for delicates) or a sieve, and shake out as much remaining dust as possible. I also use an air purifier in the pet room to cut down on dust.

I’ve had respiratory infections before here & there, but infrequently & only one or two individuals at a time. There are a lot of factors that influence if a rodent is susceptible to infection or not. Most of my mice that have had respiratory infections were rescues from poor care situations, and the issue resolved itself with doxycycline + better husbandry.

There are potential risks with any bedding option, but personally I have had little to no issues using primarily aspen bedding for a variety of rodent species & feel comfortable continuing to use it. I used to use entirely/primarily paper and I found less odor & wetness with aspen compared to carefresh style paper. I wouldn’t use it with mice, but gerbils & hamsters are not as messy as mice so I’d be more comfortable using a lot of paper bedding with those species.

Pelleted paper has better absorbency and ammonia control than typical paper bedding for rodents, which is why rat owners tend to use paper pellet cat litter in their rat’s litterboxes. So that’s an option! And some owners use Megazorb which is pelleted wood pulp, as a base layer in their enclosure.

Hemp is another bedding option that I haven’t personally tried but have heard a lot of great things about.

Between the End and the Beginning - WIP snippet

slowly but steadily, this fic is coming along! Writing this is probably the only thing keeping me sane as I study for the last exam of my university career :D Here's a snippet from the 'Aftermath' chapter. Hope you like it!

It was a comforting sensation, the warmth of the blankets and the sight of the stars, and he embraced it, along with the sweet -if brief- thoughtlessness that came with it. 

Outside the reinforced glass, millions of shimmering dots speckled the absolute blackness, their faint lights nowhere near enough to break through the dark emptiness of the cosmos. And so many light-years between each of them. Here among the stars, it was easy to feel lost and insignificant, a fading particle of dust against the endless expanse of time and space. All his life so far, and all the life he had yet to live, mattered next to nothing to the vastness of the universe. And why would it? His mere decades were less than droplets in an endless ocean compared to the eons and eons of a star’s lifetime.

Once, this thought would have scared the crap out of him. Tonight, however, Jeff found it oddly reassuring. The stars didn’t care about his struggles. They’d seen much worse and they were still there, eternal and unmovable. 

He wished he had one ounce of their stoic indifference. 

But no. Life rolled a 1 on mindfulness and gave me crippling anxiety instead. 

He slid down the bed, turning on his right side to face the window, and readjusted the pillows and blankets until he was swaddled in them like a soft cocoon and the soothing heat almost reached his heart. 

A few constellations seemed familiar - Is this Decoris? Nah, the relay’s on the wrong side - and he slipped a hand out of his bedspread wrapping to trace the pattern of stars on the cold glass. 

If this is Farinata, that means we jumped from the Charon relay straight to Antaeus and we’re now in the Hades Gamma cluster. It made sense - the sector was crossed by the Anansi-Ishtar trading route, and its heavy mercantile traffic made it the ideal place for ships wishing to cover their traces. Even assuming his conclusions were right, though, the new information gave him no insight into where the Cerberus cruiser was taking him. It was still a pastime good as any to keep his mind occupied, at least.

He followed a few more paths, running the tip of his index finger on the smooth surface of the window to connect planets, stars, moons and relays.

Fortuna. Nephron. Enoch. Hydra.

With every line, every dot, his eyelids became heavier and recalling systems harder. 

Micah. Illium. Omega.

He was already asleep before he could name Alchera.

Burns like a forest fire

The undergrowth was soft and damp under Shepard’s bare feet. The air was crisp and felt pleasantly chilly on her cheeks, and a gentle breeze carried around the scent of pines and dew-splashed grass.

She put one hand forward and let the sunlight paint a play of lights on her skin, casting shadows of the thousand branches, leaves, and bird nests separating her from the light blue sky above, shielding her from the galaxy and all her fights and obligations.

She couldn’t remember the last time she felt so relaxed: the quiet was so deep and serene, it saturated the atmosphere, soaked through her skin and bones and muscles. It reached the depths of her own soul and made her forget everything that wasn’t this, and now. Come to think of it… how did she end up there?

I suppose it doesn’t matter all too much; she muttered to herself. I’d better enjoy the peace and quiet while it lasts.

She could hear the gurgling sound of water flowing in the distance- a stream, perhaps? Or maybe a small waterfall? Curious, she decided to investigate: was there a more perfect place than a forest creek to sit down in the shade and enjoy the nice weather? The murmur seemed to come from her left, so that’s where she headed.

She walked for a few minutes, or maybe longer- she had no way to tell without her omnitool. Did I forget to wear it when I got out of bed this morning? This wasn’t like her but then again, she’d been under an immense amount of pressure lately and she was still human after all.

Step by step, as she got closer to its source, the noise grew louder masking the chirping above and the buzzing of insects below her…

Until it suddenly stopped.

Even the bird had ceased singing, and the wind blew through the fronds without making a sound.

What is happening?

Did she go deaf all of a sudden? Maybe her cybernetics were malfunctioning- I should ask Chakwas or Miranda to take a look at them.

She took a step forward, and the crunching of dead leaves under her feet broke the silence.

This is strange.

At least her ears were still working.

A shiver ran down the back of her neck all the way to her fingertips, making the fine hair over her arms raise to attention. She looked up to study the thick curtain of clouds obscuring the sun, dark gray spots looming above her through the trees.

How is that possible? It was sunny up a few moments ago…

Something else felt off about her surroundings, and it wasn’t just the unnatural silence. Had the canopy of threes been that autumnal reddish-brown hue all along? She seemed to recall vibrant shades of green coloring the branches and flowers littering the verdant grass under her feet. Now a carpet of moss and fallen foliage gave way under her feet.

A few white specks started littering her vision, falling slowly to the ground from above, a few of them finding their resting place in her hair. Was that… snow?

I need to get away from here.

Shepard quickened her pace, despite having no idea of where she was going - she supposed moving in any direction at all was better than spending another minute in that unpredictable forest. She stumbled over a sharp rock and hissed in pain- why was she barefoot in the woods, anyway?

It wasn’t completely silent anymore, she realized. The pounding of her heartbeat and the creaking of the dead twigs snapping at each step almost covered the distant sound of…

Voices?

“Is somebody here? Can you hear me?”

Shepard was running now, but the whispers were all around her. They echoed beyond the leafless trees, reaching up to the sky above the bare branches that were waving towards the dark clouds like thousands of arms desperately begging for salvation.

Whoever they were, they were coming closer. And, she realized with horror, they were calling her name.

Hello everyone!

I’ve been rather silent for the past month or so- to make a long story short, October started with a new job as a teacher, went on with a close encounter of the awful kind with Covid, and ended with me being accepted into a PhD program.

But I’m back, and with news: after months of work, I’m proud to announce I’m finally publishing my first multi-chapter fic ever, Between The End And The Beginning.

If you try to keep all the good books for yourself, there won't be any room for all of them...

But!!!! since reading is really a habit, if you read just 1 page before sleeping, you can easily finish 2-3 books a month! That is why I keep books next to my bed

Diabetes in Hamsters

~I would like to add that I’m not a vet/animal professional, if you have concerns about your hammie’s health seeing a vet is a must! This post is purely about my own experience, in the hopes it might help someone and their pet who are going through the same thing.~

My little guy is a Russian dwarf hamster, he’s diabetic in addition to being albino, but it he doesn’t seem to let this get the best of him in any way!

Although diabetes is more common in dwarf hamsters, it’s something that can affect any pet. Despite being notified of this common condition by websites, videos, vets and pet shop workers; I feel there’s a concerning lack of information on the topic.

I personally scoured through countless websites and videos on how to help my current hamster with his condition but had little to no luck, not even my vet knew what to do. In fact they quite honestly told me they had no experience or knowledge on the condition.

I phoned multiple vets to enquire if they could help and was told the same thing, and had truthly began to lose some hope until I was recommended an exotic vet.

If you find yourself in a similar situation, or suspect your hamster might be diabetic, I would 100% recommend going to see an exotic vet for your little one.

It wasn’t the cheapest, all in all I believe I was about £80 for a check-up and a urine test, but PLEASE don’t let this out you off, as the experience and knowledge these vets have compared to regular vets was worth every penny.

Some common symptoms to look out for include, (but are not limited to);

-Excessive thirst

-Excessive urination

-Weight loss

-Cataracts

These symptoms can also be signs of other conditions and illnesses so a trip to the vet is best to rule out possibilities and help your hamster best.

I was given two options by my vet;

1): the option of starting my hamster on insulin; which would require me to administer at least one dose of insulin a day

2): to leave him as he is and monitor him and his condition daily

Options 1 can be costly in the long run, (the cost itself wasn’t an issue for me, but rather what damage I could possibly do). Insulin would cost about £25-£30 a month, and the medication itself can only be kept for about a month so this would be a monthly finance for anyone considering this.

I decided to go with option 2, as me and my vet thought this would provide a calmer life for him. Although option 1 was tempting, I could potentially run the risk of over or under dosing him. Additionally, I was concerned about the impact holding him down and injecting him with a needle (possibly more than once a day), would do to his well-being and to our relationship.

He runs to greet me if he hears me nearby, and is happy to sit on my hand to come out of the cage. I was worrried that this would make him fearful of me and being out and about in his home, something hitch would impact my ability to check his weight, and cleaning.

As it stands my little guy has his sand box cleaned out everyday, and his bedding is done every other day due to his excessive urination.

His sand box also used to be every other day, however I noticed mould starting to grow one day when cleaning, (simply due to the amount of urine he would produce), so that routine was quickly changed.

His bedding admittedly isn’t as excessive as it should be, however with a wider area to clean the risk of missing spots when cleaning (and running the risk of amonia build up and mould), was simply not worth it in my mind.

Additionally, it would stress him out more as bigger-clean outs would be required far more often, and he’s not too fond of having his home turned upside down as I’m sure any hamster owner knows.

He’s quite content though, rest assured my hammie has adequate room and enrichment in his home. Deep enough bedding to burrow, enrichment, different substrates, boredom’s breakers, etc.

How do I personally help my hamster, you might wonder?

-Regular checks and cleaning of his usual sleeping/hiding spots and sand box (toilet area)

-He has a water bottle in addition to x3 tea light holders placed in his usual hangout spots, to ensure he has easy and adequate access to fresh water. (Shallow tea lights are better for this, however placing a clean stone in the bottom of a deeper tea light can help avoid your hammie falling in).

-his weight is checked daily and written down, as well as how much he’s drinking

-getting a urine sample was also a suggestion from the vet, as this can help to give you an idea on things like blood sugar levels

-cutting out sugary snack, and avoiding food and hamster mixes with added sugar, (things like carrots and raisins are a no go for my little guy as a result)

-added protein to his diet; a good source of this is mealworms, egg, chicken, etc

-we also avoid hides with cramped awkward spaces, like mazes for example. He previously had one and I used hamster safe sealant to hopefully make it safer for him, however again mould made an appearance so I’d recommend watching out for these.

*something to note is my first vet gave me reusable cat litter in order to obtain a urine sample, however this was a big concern due to the risk of him consuming the fake litter. The exotic vet I went to recommended instead placing him in a carrier, with no absorbing materials/bedding, and wait for him to urinate. Personally this did break my heart a bit to watch, and he wasn’t too cooperative with the process.

I was also told by my vet that he may have a shorter life-span as a result of this, however this hasn’t stopped my little guy from living his best life. Like any other hamster he loves foraging, running, coming out for some one-on-one interaction, digging, chewing, etc.

He’s like any other hamster, and no matter how long he lives I’ll do my best to provide him a happy, safe and loving home.

I hope this has helped give someone who was also lost a bit of hope and guidance. Though again would like to say that I am in no way, shape or form a professional. I merely have my own personal experience with this matter.

I can only say how it’s been for me and my hamster, but every pet is different, and a vet should alway be the point of call for any health concerns you may have.

Can any experienced hamster owners help me? I am the new owner a male siberian hamster and I need recommendations for bedding types/brands. At first I was using the free bedding that came with my cage but in the span of a few days the bedding was matted into the ends of his fur and I had to trim him. I bought another pack of bedding but I think it’s already getting stuck to his fur. Are there any brands that don’t cling onto longer fur as easily or that y’all recommend?
