I finished my painting! :D a tad inspired by Disco's graphic style, it's mostly a breakup piece, homage to one of my favorite songs.

Animal of the Day!
Red-billed Tropicbird (Phaethon aethereus)
Tumblr media
Conservation Status- Least Concern
Habitat- Coastlines along the Equator
Size (Weight/Length)- 105 cm inscluding tail streamers
Diet- Squid; Fish
Cool Facts- Despite resembling a tern, you won’t see a red-billed tropicbird nearly as far north. They prefer muggy coastlines along the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian oceans. Having very weak leg muscles, these tropicbirds only come to land to raise a family. The rest of their life is spent soaring over the ocean at 45 kilometers per hour. Despite not being able to swim very well, red-billed tropicbirds dive into the ocean from over 40 meters above the waves to catch fish and squid. Being a solitary hunter, they will sometimes follow larger, aquatic predators like dolphins to schools of fish.
Rating- 11/10 (Cool beak, cooler tail.)

"For Ulmo bore up Elwing out of the waves, and he gave her the likeness of a great white bird, and upon her breast there shone as a star the Silmaril, as she flew over the water to seek Eärendil her beloved."
Elwing, taking the shape of a red-billed tropicbird.
I've had this image in my head for a long while, but I let it stew until I felt like I had a good enough handle on how to light it, and I'm very happy with the result.

BOTD: Red-tailed Tropicbird
Tumblr media
Photo: Bill Bacon
"This graceful seabird ranges widely in the tropical Pacific and Indian Oceans, and may be seen by visitors to Hawaii. In North American waters it has been found far off the coast of California, where it may be a rare but regular visitor more than 100 miles from land. Even more than its relatives, it seems to wander great distances away from its nesting islands."

Magnificent Frigatebird (upper); Red-tailed Tropicbird; Yellow-billed Tropicbird.  While it is a fascinating background, he got the wing shape of the frigatebirds all wrong, and for some reason didn’t paint the Red-tailed Tropicbird with a red-tail.  Tropicbird tails are flexible, and undulate with each wingbeat, which is not shown.  I wonder if he saw these birds in life?  From the National Geographic series.

Wikipedia article of the day for September 23, 2018
Tumblr media
The Wikipedia article of the day for September 23, 2018 is Red-billed tropicbird. The red-billed tropicbird is a seabird, one of three species in the family Phaethontidae. Resembling a tern, it has mostly white plumage with some black markings on the wings and back, a black mask and a red bill. Most adults have tail streamers that are about two times their body length, and generally longer in males than in females. Described by Carl Linnaeus in his 10th edition of Systema Naturae (1758), this species ranges across the Indian Ocean, the tropical Atlantic, and the eastern Pacific. Nesting takes place in loose colonies. A single egg is laid, and incubated by both sexes for about six weeks. After a chick fledges, the parents will usually stop visiting the nest and the chick will leave. Red-billed tropicbirds of all ages feed on fish and squid, catching them by diving from the air into the water. The birds sometimes follow surface-feeding predators that drive prey to the surface, where they can be seized.

I’m excited to be able to announce it...
I am the American Birding Association’s 2019 Bird of the Year artist!
These are detail shots from the multi-part cover I designed for Birding, the ABA’s monthly magazine. 2019 marks the ABA’s 50th birthday, so the bird species featured in their logo, the Red-billed Tropicbird, was a natural choice.
For more info, check out aba.org/boy or the upcoming episode of the American Birding Podcast, where I’ll talk about my work!
Tumblr media
Thanks so much to all my Tumblr supporters. I can also be found under the username MeganDrawsBirds on Instagram and Twitter. Expect to hear a lot from me about the ABA in the coming year. And it’s not too late to join!
