In May 2022, I came into contact with Barry Kent MacKay when I reached out to ask for permission to use his art in a project. I never could have anticipated that within just a few months, I would have exchanged over a hundred emails.
We talk about birds. We talk about life. We talk about his late mother, his favorite artists that inspired him, our struggles, our joys.
He has been painting since the 1960s, and his work is breathtakingly gorgeous, often life size, including oils, watercolors, and acrylics. He's also sent ink and pen sketches, not available online, and I cherish each one like a special gift.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I am running this blog with his permission, because I want to try to give something back to him, to bring attention to his art, to share his knowledge and his passion, and maybe alleviate some of the burden that capitalism puts on people whose passion isn't always profitable.
Prints and originals of Barry's work can be purchased from Fine Art America. I own one of his originals myself, and can speak firsthand about the beauty of his art in person. If you do buy a print, please take a pic and tag this account!
I have also put together a Ko-Fi for him, and to be completely transparent: it is connected to his PayPal, not mine. Any and all Ko-Fi donations go straight to Barry.
Please follow, reblog, and feel completely free to engage. Barry has full access to everything. And if you like, ask Barry a question — about his art, birds, cormorants, his mother who pioneered wildlife rehabilitation, his work as an animal activist... I know he'd love to answer any questions you might have!

'Knives Out' and 'Bombshell' Teams Talk Next Projects at Lionsgate Night-Before Fete
PARTY: Lionsgate
PLACE: Chateau Marmont
PLAYERS: Chris Evans, Charlize Theron, Rian Johnson, Jay Roach, Don Johnson, Taika Waititi, Jon Hamm, Alexander Skarsgaard, Toni Colette, Ram Bergman, Jon Lovett, Daniel Craig, Ana De Armas, Stellan Skarsgaard, Jack Huston, Paul Walter Hauser, Avi Lerner, Jon Feltheimer, Joe Drake, Michael Burns, John Fithian
SERVED: Beer-battered cauliflower with honey, mozzarella-filled arancini, fried chicken bites
INSIDE DISH: On the night before the Golden Globes, the teams from Lionsgate’s Bombshell and Knives Out gathered on the airy Chateau patio to toast their films.
Reflecting on Knives Out’s impressive stamina at the box office as the movie continues to build audience in its seventh week in theaters, Don Johnson joked that the mystery thriller was, “aging in reverse, like me.” Knives Out writer-director Rian Johnson and his partner, podcaster and author Karina Longworth had recently returned to LA after spending the holidays in St. Bart’s, where they serendipitously ran into Johnson’s Star Wars boss, Lucasfilm president Kathy Kennedy.
Johnson and his producing partner Ram Bergman talked about their plans for a follow-up to Knives Out, a new mystery built around Daniel Craig’s Southern private detective, Benoit Blanc. Johnson noted that his awards season highlight so far had been meeting Parasite director Bong Joon Ho, with whom he’s now exchanging emails.
Filmmaker bonding is one of the perks of season — Jojo Rabbit director Taika Waititi bounced into the party and made a beeline for Bombshell director Jay Roach, who was getting a warm and effusive greeting from actress-producer Colleen Camp. “I just love your movie!” Camp said, grabbing Roach’s arm. Roach talked about his next project as well, a series on the 1970 Kent State shootings he’s making with Tina Fey’s production company, citing parallels to HBO’s Chernobyl in that both stories are about tragedies that emerged from failed systems, and noting its unfortunate contemporary relevance amid the Hong Kong protests.
Roach’s Bombshell star and producer Charlize Theron was there, fresh from the Palm Springs Film Festival gala. Asked about Bombshell subject Gretchen Carlson’s new talk show for Blumhouse TV, Theron said, “I’ll be very interested to see it.” Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chairman Joe Drake was huddling with the filmmakers of his anticipated April movie, Antebellum, Gerard Bush and Christopher Renz, having returned from a family ski trip to Park City, Utah.
As the party, which had started at 8 p.m., wound past 10:30 p.m., the scent of weed began wafting through the air, Jon Hamm arrived and Evans, who had been quietly parked in the corner, ducked out. — Rebecca Keegan
Leonardo DiCaprio, Chris Evans Hold Court at Star-Studded W Magazine Party
PARTY: W Magazine's Best Performances issue party

PLACE: Chateau Marmont's penthouse

PLAYERS: Leonardo DiCaprio, Quentin Tarantino, Joaquin Phoenix, Adam Driver, Chris Evans, Laura Dern, Noah Baumbach, Antonio Banderas, Taika Waititi, Henry Winkler, Awkwafina, Ben Platt, Beanie Feldstein, Kaitlyn Dever, Joey King, Armie Hammer, Lakeith Stanfield, Natasha Lyonne, Brian Cox, Jeremy Strong, Jared Harris, Jodie Turner-Smith, Joshua Jackson, Margaret Qualley, Ana de Armas, Ellen Page, Rooney Mara, Dean-Charles Chapman, George MacKay, Keegan-Michael Key, Charlie Hunnam, Winston Duke, Josh O'Connor, Anna Paquin, Zoey Deutch, Sydney Sweeney, Molly Gordon, Craig Robinson.
SERVED: Tray-passed sliders, crab cakes, grilled cheese bites, tuna tartare cones and for dessert, mini donuts, along with indoor and outdoor Absolut Elyx Vodka cocktails that kept the party going.
INSIDE DISH: The annual party, held in conjunction with the magazine's Best Performances 2020 issue — which this year featured nine different A-listers from award season films — kicked off Golden Globes weekend with a bang, welcoming cover stars Joaquin Phoenix, Chris Evans, Laura Dern and Adam Driver into the penthouse of LA's iconic Chateau Marmont for a night of pre-show celebration. The party, hosted by new editor-in-chief Sara Moonves along with W's Lynn Hirschberg and YouTube's Derek Blasberg, featured an intimate indoor space lined with starry photos from the magazine, while outside on the Sunset Boulevard balcony was where the party really got started.
Phoenix and girlfriend Rooney Mara were among the very first to arrive, with Mara settling into the couches under heat lamps while Phoenix started a lively conversation with fellow early-arriver Quentin Tarantino. The Joker star mingled and stopped for photos before making an exit, while the Once Upon A Time in Hollywood director shared laughs with Antonio Banderas before making his own way out.
Chris Evans hopped from Hollywood circle to circle, first with Knives Out co-star Ana de Armas and taking photos with 1917 star George MacKay; Captain America himself then reappeared later in the night leading Taika Waititi into the party, before heading outside to share smokes (and hugs) with Armie Hammer, Lakeith Stanfield, Natasha Lyonne and Succession star Jeremy Strong.
The true star of the evening though, was Leonardo DiCaprio, who arrived in the last hour of the party and quickly was holding court in a corner of the deck, despite a low baseball cap that kept him somewhat hidden from the crowd. The A-lister kept close to girlfriend Camila Morrone, while also catching up with Waititi and Hammer and laughing on his phone with Blasberg. Queen and Slim's Jodie Turner-Smith also introduced herself to DiCaprio, accompanied by her new husband Joshua Jackson.
While there were numerous A-listers in attendance, Hollywood's fresh faces also came out to celebrate, with the casts of Booksmart (Beanie Feldstein, Kaitlyn Dever, Molly Gordon) and The Politician (Ben Platt, Zoey Deutch) posing for a stream of photos and hitting up the cocktail bar. Awkwafina, Joey King and Once Upon A Time in Hollywood breakout Margaret Qualley also joined the tight-knit group, and at one point, Qualley approached the chatting trio of MacKay, Henry Winkler and Charlie Hunnam to ask the Barry star for a quick hug. Adam Driver did a quick lap around the penthouse before heading out, while fellow Marriage Story duo Dern and Noah Baumbach conversed with Cynthia Erivo and Strong. The party wound down just before midnight, as the last drinks were poured and late-night donuts were passed around. — Kirsten Chuba

off the rack #1304
Monday, March 9, 2020
I want to thank my partner Chris for another successful Capital Comic Book Con at the Delta Hotel in downtown Ottawa yesterday. All of his hard work pricing and preparing our stock and setting up our booth paid off. I am glad that I get a day to recover as the old muscles are aching today. I saw many old friends and customers which made for a fun social event as well. There's a full moon out tonight so get out there and give a howl. Then come back inside and wash your hands.
Daredevil #19 - Chip Zdarsky (writer) Marco Checchetto (art) Mattia Iacono (colours) VC's Clayton Cowles (letters). A gang of super villains paid by the Stromwyns is destroying Hell's Kitchen. Can Daredevil save his home? There's a lot of destruction and the citizens try to defend themselves but it doesn't look good. I like the wild card showing up. I wonder if they will help or hurt?
Lois Lane #9 - Greg Rucka (writer) Mike Perkins (art) Andy Troy (colours) Simon Bowland (letters). Lois and Renee need to find the assassin Kiss of Death and they get some help from a friend. Batman's appearance was a hoot. This story has been great so far. You should also be watching Greg's TV show Stumptown. Cobie Smulders is killing it as Dex.
Doctor Strange #6 - Mark Waid (writer) Kev Walker (art) Java Tartaglia & Antonio Fabela (colours) VC's Clayton Cowles (letters). Someone has stolen Stephen's magical artefacts and could be mass producing them for evil purposes. He has to team up with Doctor Druid to stop that from happening. This new story is spellbinding.
Superman: Villains #1 - Brian Michael Bendis, Matt Fraction & Jody Houser (writers) Art, colours and letters done by a bullpen full of others. This $5.99 US one-shot is a muddled mess. It confused me right out of the gate when Superman visits his parents on the farm. Ma and Pa Kent are there. I thought Pa died. Then Superman tells Pa that some Batman tech is going to keep them safe like it does for the Batcave. That was four pages of WTF for me. So that segues into a scene with Lois, Clark, Perry and the new owner of the Daily Planet, Marisol Leone. We find out later that Ms. Leone is the head of some sort of Mafia. Then there's two pages of Lex Luthor and a laughing answering machine message that made me think it was the Joker calling to mock the bald baddie. I can go on and on, like why Bizarro? I hate Bizarro. Also, what is up with Supergirl? Is she still infected from Year of the Villain? All the different art styles didn't help either. This did not make me want to read more DC comics.
Black Cat #10 - Jed MacKay (writer) Kris Anka (art) Brian Reber (colours) Ferran Delgado (letters). It's a fun-filled, action-packed team-up with Wolverine in Madripoor. How do you like them hyphens?
Savage Avengers #11 - Gerry Duggan (writer) Butch Guice (art) Alex Guimaraes (colours) VC's Travis Lanham (letters). Doctor Strange's astral form observes the origin of the evil wizard Kulan Gath. It's this story that reveals the way to finally kill the sorcerer. But first, he and Elektra must find Conan. This was my favourite issue of the run so far.
Conan: Battle for the Serpent Crown #2 - Saladin Ahmed (writer) Luke Ross (art) Nolan Woodard (colours) VC's Travis Lanham (letters). I love these outrageously improbable adventures. Conan chases the Black Cat to get a ring back. This issue takes place in Las Vegas so it's a good chance for the Scarlet Spider to make a guest appearance. Conan does retrieve the ring but how he does made me go "huh?". I really got a chuckle when I saw where Conan and Nyla are zapped to. I'm sure this will cross over with Savage Avengers at some point.
Strange Academy #1 - Skottie Young (writer) Humberto Ramos (art) Edgar Delgado (colours) VC's Clayton Cowles (letters). I expected a fun debut from Skottie Young and he delivers. We meet a lot of kids and a lot of teachers in this new magical school of magic. This reminded me of Avengers Academy and I think I'll like this new crop of young magicians.
Batman #90 - James Tynion IV (writer) Jorge Jimenez (art) Tomeu Morey (colours) Clayton Cowles (letters). Catwoman has a secret that will destroy Batman's love for her and this flashback story tells us what it is. It was disappointing that I guessed what it was before the big reveal on the last page. This new villain, the Designer is kind of interesting and I want to see if Mr. D succeeds in his goal.
Miles Morales: Spider-Man #16 - Saladin Ahmed (writer) Cory Smith (pencils) Victor Olazaba (inks) David Curiel (colours) VC's Cory Petit (letters). There are two stories this issue. The first has Miles babysitting his little sister and you just know that things are going to get hairy. Then Uncle Aaron walks into a trap laid by his new boss Ultimatum. What happens next doesn't bode well for Miles. This is another book that I'm thinking of benching. My fondness for the character is waning but I do still like the art.
Marauders #9 - Gerry Duggan (writer) Matteo Lolli (art) Edgar Delgado (colours) VC's Joe Caramagna (letters). This issue has Emma and Bishop dealing with the bad guys. It's really cool how Emma can mess with minds.
Dryad #1 - Kurtis J. Wiebe (writer) Justin Osterling (art) Jim Campbell (letters). This new fantasy story is about Morgan and Yale and their two teenage offspring Griffon and Rana. There are big swords and monsters and a mysterious ancient race. The mixed race marriage reminded me of Saga. Morgan is an elf and Yale is human. The kids go exploring and open a door leading to a peck of trouble. The characters didn't grab me and this issue didn't spark enough interest in me to want to read the next issue. You might like this if you enjoy books like Rat Queens.
Strange Adventures #1 - Tom King (writer) Mitch Gerads & Evan "Doc" Shaner (art) Clayton Cowles (letters). Adam Strange is back on the racks in this 12 issue maxi that has him being framed for murder. When Batman passes up the case he's got to go with another hero to clear his name. I really liked how Alanna was handled and that's why I will read the next issue.
2020 Rescue #1 - Dana Schwartz (writer) Jacen Burrows (art) Scott Hanna (inks pages 17, 19, 20) Peter Pantazis (colours) VC's Joe Caramagna (letters). I know from reading Avengers that Tony is alive and well trapped in the past but Pepper Potts thinks he's dead. This story has Pepper trying to find a way to clone Tony using his biological parents' DNA. I picked this off the rack because of Jacen Burrows's art but the writing wasn't even half as good as the old Ironheart used to be so I won't be reading any more.
Spider-Man Noir #1 - Margaret Stohl (writer) Juan Ferreyra (art) VC's Travis Lanham (letters). This is Peter Parker as Sam Spade, the Shadow and Spider-Man all rolled into one circa 1939. The web-shooters and 45s are jarring to me. Anyways, the art is suitably dark and gorgeous and the murder mystery will have Peter globe trotting to find the killer. If you like hard boiled crime this is the 5-issue mini for you.
Doctor Doom #6 - Christopher Cantwell (writer) Salvador Larroca (art) Guru-eFX (colours) VC's Cory Petit (letters). This is like a Bing Crosby and Bob Hope "Road to Terlingua, Texas" movie starring Doctor Doom and Kang. Doom is trying to find a way to keep a black hole from destroying the earth and Kang is just tagging along for giggles. Doom does get what he's after, rids himself of the annoying Kang and figures out how to save the earth. Now he's heading back home with the device and I want to see how he uses it.
Marvel #1 - this $4.99 US 6-issue mini is for all those Marvel Maniacs pining for stories from the days of yore. Alex Ross curates this anthology of new stories that read like reprints from the sixties. The two stories this issue are:
"Spider-Man: Make My Day" by Sajan Saini (writer) Frank Espinosa (art) & VC's Clayton Cowles (letters) features a fight with Rhino and an argument with Mary Jane.
"The Boy…and the Brute" by Kurt Busiek (writer) Steve Rude (art) Steven Legge (colours) & Steve Rude (letters) features Rick Jones, the Hulk and the Avengers.
These are nice little vignettes and are interesting for the creators involved. They're fun to read and that's what comic books are all about.
The Flash #750 - It's been a while since I've read a Flash comic so I thought I'd catch up by snagging this $7.99 US anniversary issue off the racks. There are 6 stories inside featuring a bunch of Flashes but mostly concentrating on Barry Allen. Jay the Golden Age Flash and Wally West are here too. There is also a lot of hopping around in time, dimensions and universes that left my head reeling. It looks like future issues of the Flash are going to speed through many divergent plots and I don't want to work that hard to keep track of everything. This issue did not make me want to return to the Flash fold.

Artist Spotlight - Barry Kent MacKay
SQUAWK has been extremely fortunate to get in contact with Barry Kent MacKay, who has not only allowed us to use his artwork on the site, but has been donating sketches, studies, and illustrations not available elsewhere online. He has become a beloved figure in our community, and we are hoping to increase awareness of him, his conservation efforts, and his amazing paintings.
His biography from his website:
Renowned Canadian bird artist, writer, naturalist, and conservationist, Barry Kent MacKay has “always been an admirer of birds, anxious to see them, paint them, and care for them.” Barry’s biological and ecological accuracy has put him in demand for commissions, to illustrate books, scientific journals and various print and digital media. He has painted birds and other wildlife from around the world, often life size, working in oils, watercolours, and acrylics. He prefers to sell original art, and keeps prices low.
“Actual, original art should be affordable for middle class buyers,” he says. “I avoid having to depend on selling reproductions so that the market does not dictate what I paint, which can often be little-known species. I love to try different ideas.”
Barry celebrates the innate beauty of birds and nature: “I’m enchanted by the form of birds. I think artistically, the structures, the curves, the counter-curves of a bird are quite beautiful. I feel that about fish or mammals or plants too. Nature produces an infinity of abstract forms from the shape and look of a galaxy to a grain of sand. If you isolate something from its environment and think of it as a free-formed piece of art without knowing what its function is, it is still something that is beautiful. Function drives form in a way that seems to be aesthetically pleasing to us and it is that that is manifested more in birds, at least for me. Birds captured me first.”
His artistic mentors were Mr. T.M. Shortt and Roger Tory Peterson. “But in part,” he says, “I’m something of a throwback to what I think of as the golden age of bird illustration, influenced as a child by the published works of Fuertes, Brooks, Weber, Scott, Reid-Henry, Eckleberry, Sutton, Liljefors, Thorburn, Jaques and so many other great bird and wildlife artists and illustrators whose works I’ve never stopped admiring.”
He was named Artist of the Year by Bird Studies Canada and has won numerous other awards and honors for his work as an artist, conservationist and writer.
Please take a look at his work that is available for sale as prints or originals at his store through Fine Art America.

The Scarlet Ibis (Eudocimus ruber) is native to South America, mostly along the Caribbean coast, but south along the Atlantic coast, with, the last I heard, an isolated critically endangered population in south-eastern Brazil’s Baixada Santista district, nesting in coastal mangroves. It is also found on various islands of the southern West Indies, and strays still further north. While it may sometimes been seen as far north as the continental U.S., and was, indeed, painted by Audubon, who found them in Louisiana in 1821. He said they were rare, leading many birders and ornithologists to conclude that he encountered “vagrant” or “accidental” birds. My own view, for what it’s worth, is a little different. I think that birds such as the Scarlet Ibis were more heavily persecuted, in their case for their brilliant feathers in an era when there was a huge demand for colourful feathers for the millinery and fashion industries, and that they may very well have nested, the Gulf States and other regions where they are now absent.
The odd one is still seen, for sure, but they are, because of their beautiful plumage, so often kept in zoos and other collections that it’s really impossible to determine if birds observed where they don’t normally occur are truly wild birds from other climes, or escapees.
In few places, now, is it especially numerous, with most occurring in mangroves and mudflats and the flooded plains and thinly inhabited llanos of Venezuela and Colombia. Tourists visit the famous colonies of the Caroni Swamp, in Trinidad, where the birds flock each evening. It is a spectacular sight as the lowering sun, filtered through tropical air makes their brilliant red feathers seem to glow. The Scarlet Ibis, and an entirely different bird, the Rufous-vented Chachalaca (Otalis ruficauda), share the honour of being the national bird(s) of Trinidad and Tobago.
The Scarlet Ibis is extremely similar to the White Ibis (Eudocimus albus), in size, shape, habits and pattern, but not colour. Where the adult Scarlet Ibis is brilliant red, the adult White Ibis is snowy white. Both have black wing tips, and in immature plumage they are similar in appearance. They are known to hybridize, rarely in the wild but more commonly in captivity, and some scientists would prefer to consider them distinct subspecies of the same species, which would create the absurdly confusing result that the Scarlet Ibis lose its appropriate name and being called the “White Ibis”, unless, of course, the people in charge of such things came up with an appropriate alternative name applicable to both forms.
This painting is approximately life-size, and was done in acrylics on compressed hardboard. If I were to give the painting a name it might be “Scarlet on Red” since I have shown a trio of birds characteristically perched on the branches of a Red Mangrove (Rhizophora mangle). This was a very difficult painting for a technical reason: It is hard to use red paint. The pigment tends to not be too stable during application and the paint is translucent, so requires a lot of underpainting, and then about three applications to approach that richly brilliant scarlet colour that seems so unusual for such a large bird, although several large wading bird species do have areas of red, pink and bright pink. The painting is 30 X 25 inches in size
