A thought inspired by Colours in Your Eyes by Batsutosai (currently only available for viewing if you are logged in to AO3); you are born only seeing the world in black, white, and whatever color your soulmate's eyes are. You only see the world's full colors once you've made physical skin-to-skin contact with your soulmate.

Marco lived to 40 only seeing black, and white, and shades in between. The ocean was often a gray gradient, the sky it's own hue of gray. Clouds, Pops' coat and later his hair, Izou's favorite face makeup, paper, Thatch's kitchen uniform were all the whitest of whites. The sun was something different. He couldn't tell, couldn't know, but it was somehow a warmer white than anything else.

Izou and Thatch had been able to see color ever since Thatch joined the crew. Through them, Marco learned his favorite shirt was purple, his pants were blue, and his Phoenix was blue-and-gold but the kind of blue the same color as the sky and the kind of gold you only see in the sun. Through them, he learned Pops' eyes were the same kind of grey as the bed sheets of most people's bunks. Through them, he learned fire was redorangeyellow and that steel was it's own special shade of grey.

Steel held a special place in his heart. Thatch's knives, the un-adorned and un-altered blade of Pops' naginata, the barrel of Izou's gun, the razor that he shaved with-all steel and all had a strange set to the gray of their metal, a strange set that he could only see in items made of the material. It always drew his eye, no matter what. Even high in the sky, he could catch the glint off the steel rope pullies or harpoon tips the moment they moved.

But there was something about fire, about the shift and change and strange tiny differences that only barely stood out as gray or white when right next to each other that drew him in. Lanterns, campfires, candles, a match lit for a cigarette. No matter what, he was always entranced by fire-and that was even before he ate his fruit.

After his fruit he couldn't leave fire alone. A candle or lantern always burned in his room. He knew by heart the location of every lantern on deck and made it a regular route to walk by all of them during deck duty at least once. Campfires were entrancing and enchanting, it was difficult to draw his attention away from one if he was allowed to stare too long.

Pops made rumblings about his soulmate having an affinity for fire. Izou and Haruta teased him that he was just looking for nesting material. Thatch threatened to actually eat him if he cooked (singed) his fingers one more time getting too close to the stoves in the kitchens. As always, Pops was right on the money.

The first time he saw Ace, the only things in his mind were: "steel. fire." His eyes, his element. Ace, with eyes of tempered steel and a fist made of flames, challenged Pops and Marco had to reign himself in after the brat was brought on board. As days turned to weeks turned to months, he kept his distance. Fire with a steel spine, but skittish and fragile if approached from the wrong angle.

Three days after Ace took the tattoo, he laughed at something Thatch said to him then looked to Marco. Marco grinned back and, in a rare selfish moment taken for his own surety, reached out to pass Ace a drink.

Ace's fingers closed over his to accept the tankard.

The world exploded into something Marco, in his 41 years of life, had never seen before.

Later, through Thatch and Izou again, he'd learn his hair is blonde, his tattoo is navy blue (different from the sea, different from the sky), and Ace's skin is tanned. Much, much, much later he'll learn not just the names of the colors of Ace's skin and fire, but the taste of both and the warmth of his love.

Paint horses :D get it? This was the latest project from my AP art class. The requirements were that we solely used acrylic paint and that we utilize one color theory. I went with analogous because warm color pallets are my absolutely favorites. Those are the colors of sunsets :3 and FIRE!
