Was doing some thinking and wanted to paint up a Phoenix Hawk themed off a bird - so I took my favorite, the Killdeer. But I haven't gotten a lot of painting done and the torso was EATEN BY A CAT

Done! StPetersBird.com has launched and is all up-to-date! The latest entry is about this beauty: the Red-Shouldered Hawk (2022 Calendar October Bird). Please check out the website, for the love of birds. And let me know if anything strikes you, good or bad. You could even order one of the last 3 remaining 2022 St. PetersBird calendars. Soon you'll be able to pre-order the 2023 St. PetersBird calendar. But first, I'll let my Patreon supporters vote on which of my bird photos they'd like to see next year. And no, I don't plan on creating an Instagram account for St. PetersBird. Too many social media accounts distract from bird watching. #stpetersbird #birdnerd #raptor #birdofprey #hawk #redshoulderedhawk #birdfreaks #birds_adored #yourshotphotographer https://www.instagram.com/p/Cj1XFyTtLGe/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

This mature Red-shouldered Hawk is recovering from an injured wing at the Center! Red-shouldered Hawks are fierce — despite being smaller, these hawks are known to take down Great Horned Owl chicks. Some birds have cleverly discovered how to use the fear other animals have of red-shouldered Hawks to their advantage — Blue Jays will often mimic the hawk’s call to scare all other animals away from a food source, leaving the Blue Jay to swoop down and have an easy meal! swvawildlifecenter.org #redshoulderedhawk #hawk #hawks #raptors #birdsofprey https://www.instagram.com/p/CXcVDFHoP0R/?utm_medium=tumblr

I was at Hunting Beach Central Park yesterday morning for about an hour. As I was leaving, I heard a raptor calling from overhead. It was decent sized so I assumed it was a red-tailed or red-shouldered hawk, but as they were against the sun and pretty high up it was hard to tell. Their call didn’t sound like a red-tailed though. So they’re flying around and making a lot of noise, and I see two smaller raptors kinda flying after them. They don’t seem to be aggressively harassing it like I’ve seen crows do, but both birds seemed to be annoying it mildly. Haha. I took some pics so I could try to ID them later. So I get home and lighten the images up a ton. My bigger hawk was indeed a red-shouldered hawk. But… the two smaller birds were two different species! An adult Cooper’s hawk and and an American Kestrel! I SWEAR it looked very much like those two were flying together and ganging up on the red-shouldered. But… that’s weird right? Is it weird? I have no idea. I don’t know nearly enough. I’m still learning! But I never expected to look up and see three raptors together in the air and it be three different species. Madness! Has anyone else seen something like this? #raptors #hawks #redshoulderedhawk #americankestrel #coopershawk #birds #birding #birdwatching #birdbehavior #huntingtonbeachcentralpark (at Huntington Beach Central Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/CUAs1Nqp4Mp/?utm_medium=tumblr

The Red-Shouldered Hawk (rivaled only by the Osprey) is perhaps one of the most common birds of prey spotted in Florida. Local hawk populations in the North-Eastern part of the United States have reportedly declined in recent years; however, more research is needed for a conclusive decision. The top issue facing Red-Shouldered Hawk populations is urbanization; the result of an ever-expanding need for resources paralleled by an exponentially expanding population

While the Red-Shouldered Hawk is not the species most vulnerable to urban expansion, it is a key indicator in the route that many once abundant species may take as climate change continues to affect animal populations worldwide. At some point, it is not a question of “if” an essential bird species will go extinct, but “when” one will. “A stunning Red Shouldered Hawk perched on a snag in California. The subspecies out west (elegans) are much more brilliant in color than our Red Shouldered Hawks back in Ohio.”
