"If by 'Puritanism' is understood a genuine practical theology and concern over 𝑝𝑟𝑎𝑥𝑖𝑠 and purity of heart and conscience, then certainly those who can truly be called by this name are blessed if they act accordingly, and according to the word 'Blessed are the pure in heart' (Mt. 5:8) and 'Cleanse out the old leaven' (1 Cor. 5:7; 𝑐𝑓. 2 Cor. 7:1, 11:2; 1 Jn. 3:3; Jude 23)....

The wholeness of precision of faith and conduct which all the pious are required to seek and to desire have now been assigned by some to a hated 'Puritanism.' That this has happened to purity of faith and teaching is shown by the vernacular works of the Remonstrants as well as by their 𝐴𝑝𝑜𝑙𝑜𝑔𝑖𝑎, and by the innovators who began to spread Remonstrant errors in England after the meeting of the Synod of Dort in 1619, and who attacked those who were orthodox in this hateful business, as they regarded it, by the name of Cathari or Puritans; namely, those who were zealous for purity and the orthodox doctrine of the total grace of God, against the old and new scraps of Pelagian depravity. As to conduct and morals, Lewis Bayly, the bishop of Bangor, has witnessed in his widely distributed and famous book 𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝑃𝑟𝑎𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑐𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑃𝑖𝑒𝑡𝑦 that piety has often disparaged under the name of Puritanism. Since we see that name was first conceived and used by papists in England, in order to have a label for whose who desired simplicity of ceremonies and church organization, concern for good works and 𝑝𝑟𝑎𝑥𝑖𝑠, it is necessary to inquire whether those on whom they wished to place the label of Puritan were ignorant of practical theology or hostile to it. The Puritan teaching must be earnestly studied, to see whether it agrees with the word of God or not, whether it carries on a struggle over shadows and words. It was the year 1506, Pope Julius found out about the place where the Apostle Peter was buried and he wanted to build a church in a cross-like shape on 6 acres of land. It was named St. Basilica and it still stands as the symbol of the Roman Catholic Church in the Papal Square, Vatican City. But to build a church that big one needed a lot of money. So they started selling salvation by giving them “an indulgence.” Basically, by purchasing an indulgence, an individual could reduce the length and severity of a punishment that heaven would require as payment for their sins, or so the church claimed. This Sunday, many churches will celebrate Epiphany - “the feast of the manifestation of Christ to the Gentiles" when the three wise men bring gifts to newborn Jesus.

The Wise Men come from “outside”—as Gentiles, not Jews and are significant as they are the first Gentiles to seek out Jesus.

God promised Israel that their restoration and redemption after exile would be accompanied by an influx of Gentile nations into the covenant community (Isa. 11:10) and thus the wise men serve to demonstrate that God fulfills all His promises!

If God is sovereign, then his lordship must extend over all of life, and it cannot be restricted to the walls of the church or within the Christian orbit. The non-Christian world has not been handed over to Satan, nor surrendered to fallen humanity, nor consigned to fate. God’s sovereignty is great and all-dominating in the life of that unbaptized world as well. Therefore Christ’s church on earth and God’s children cannot simply retreat from this life. If the believer’s God is at work in this world, then in this world the believer’s hand must take hold of the plow, and the name of the Lord must be glorified in that activity as well…
