the severance/substance parallels are soooo important to me wrt understanding the innie/outie relationship. fundamentally, an innie and an outie share a body and core personality traits, but they are different consciousnesses. elizabeth and sue have different bodies and the same consciousness, but they're still battling for control over who gets to be. The Person. its you but not you. its your evil twin who bears the punishment for your transgressions. its the part of yourself you've decided isnt worthy of love or basic human decency. "you [undergo the severance procedure] when u hate yourself and you’re sick of yourself and you’re lonely because you hate yourself so u let literally nobody into your life. You destroy yourself because you HATE yourself."

the critiques of the severance finale wrt essentially (i)markhelly vs (o)markgemma keep hitting weird and ringing misplaced. to me. and i'm trying to articulate why and it's like. i think that the mark (pun not intended) of a valid racial critique is being missed by positing "gets chosen by mark" as the measuring stick that decides if the finale was Good or Bad.
my good faith take is that severance is ultimately working towards that final nirvana of synthesis, with dylanists having been framed as the more emotionally fulfilling, more fair, more peaceful path towards freedom vs the necessary but violent rebellion of mark and helly, both hellyists (and i don't think severance wants us to think they are in the wrong - helena and (o)mark are far more abusive to their innies than (o)dylan ever was. they have dug their heels in and refuse to relinquish their control over their subjugated selves, as opposed to (o)dylan. which is a far more common and expected reaction from those in power.) BUT. but. mark is not yet reintegrated. a complete mark reintegration is going to be an extremely momentous event upon which everything will revolve, when it happens. we are not at a point within the narrative where we can consider mark a single character (yet).
(i)mark has always been the main character. the arc of the show has always been about the innies fighting to first discover and then secure their personhood. severance is a rebellion storyline, an oppression allegory. like christ alive, we got the *stands on a table* we are many, they are few! speech.
(i)mark doesn't know that he (he! the mark synthesis! the mark final form!) loves gemma. i don't care about (i)mark and helly as a ship, i don't care to think about them in Scenarios or AUs or what have you. BUT i care about mark and helly as the vehicle through which severance explores and signifies choice and humanity. i find that deeply moving - that last moment of (innie!) mark chosing himself as an entity separate from (o)mark, chosing even a handful of minutes more of life and love and independence from the powers that be - it's a triumph. the show was always going to lead us here. lumon may or may not try to kill (o)mark, but there's (in the innies minds, at that moment) not a universe where (i)mark and helly get to live. they are in a doomed timeline. they have nothing, not even their flesh belong to them. they are so suffocatingly denied or personhood that to steal even one more moment together they must kidnap their own bodies.
THAT SAID.
that said. i have talked about how annoyed i am that gemma's motivation was "ohh woman can't have baby". i think that writing choice was lazy. believable, sure, and it makes sense within the narrative, but i hate it. it's reductive, it's objectifying. i wish they had given gemma more life beyond "marks dead wife", i wish we had gotten to know her as a person as complex and moody as mark scout.
i am also tired of allegories for oppression being filled with white faces.
the racial problem in the helly/mark/gemma dynamic exists within what i can only think to call the infrastructure of showmaking. with diversity being applied as a coat of paint to the outer edges of a cast, rather than roles being written for non-white people, or letting main characters be non-white. there's no reason why gemma couldn't be white and helly asian, or mark, or all of them, except racism in casting.
ON THE OTHER HAND.
i try not to judge shows before the story is completed. to let a non-white character end a story unhappy or in tragedy might often be an afterthought of racism in storytelling but it doesn't have to be. we have been shown that severance can handle a complex racial narrative with milchick. i am hoping that the same will happen with gemma, either because of critiques currently being made or because they have always planned to address her racial identity in relation to both mark, helly, and lumon, but we haven't gotten there yet.
or they might not.
they might have filled their talking-about-race quota, and the intersection of racism and misogyny might be a tragic, infuriating blind spot in the severance writers room. idk man, maybe we just need to give the writers the benefit of the doubt. only time will tell. and if they fuck it up we will still have our hammers next season

Can we take a second to consider how Deadpool's regeneration works?? Like what the limits are? And what that means in the context of their weaknesses and scenarios for fanfiction?
Deadpool's regeneration is near infinite. He's come back from being exploded before by a single blood cell. As long as he isn't completely atomized, he can come back.
If you explain his healing as an extremely enhanced metabolism (similar to Peter Parker's healing) then this would mean all cell processes and chemical reactions in his body happen at a significantly faster pace than the average person. This would apply to digestion, healing, energy expenditure, but also death and aging.
The human body has a finite limit of cells that it will produce in its lifetime, so if it was simply enhanced metabolism he couldn't regenerate infinitely. Even "enhanced" healing would have its limits and a greater metabolism wouldn't account for regrowing limbs or parts of the body entirely.
This would imply that his ability is more than just "enhanced healing" but instead the ability to completely reconstruct his body. This insinuates that mutants would need different DNA that maps out the parts of the body and the instructions to generate it in their genetic code. This is similar to the regrowth of a lizard's tail or how the liver of a human body can regenerate.
However, healing capabilities aside, where does the matter and energy for this come from? Matter doesn't spontaneously come into existence; it can neither be created nor destroyed. He would need a source of energy and matter to rebuild his body.
Let's start with energy. Most humans utilize chemical energy from food to carry out bodily functions. However, Deadpool can regenerate from a single blood cell without eating anything. This implies that his body is either insanely energy efficient and has a different blueprint or that mutants draw their energy from another source. Can mutants tap into matter and antimatter as a source of energy where the human body hits its limit?
More than energy, let's consider the issue of matter. To regenerate, Deadpool would need to rebuild the organic matter of his body. If it were just an issue of reattaching limbs and reforging bonds between severed body parts or torn skin, it would be feasible. However, it's been shown that even when Deadpool's limbs or blood or corpse are beyond salvageable, he regrows them from scratch. An example of this was in Deadpool 1 where he cut off his hand and left it with Colossus, but it still regenerated on its own without it disappearing.
This implies that the lost matter from energies such as detached limbs, blood, and gore isn't reused in the regeneration process unless intentionally reattached. If he's capable of regenerating from scratch, he needs a way to get carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and phosphorus, which are the key elements that compose the human body. He also needs a way to condense these into macromolecules and organic compounds.
Hydrogen, nitrogen, carbon, and oxygen exist in large quantities in the atmosphere. Could he potentially be absorbing elements and reintegrating them into his body? Would this imply that his skin needs to be more porous to absorb elements through the air into his body?
For him to reintegrate these elements, is his body somehow catalyzing the synthesis of macromolecules? This was studied in the Miller-Urey experiment, which simulated the early conditions of Earth's atmosphere and the available basic compounds to see if it was possible for elements to spontaneously synthesize together to create the macromolecules needed for human life. It was found that under pressure, heat, and electricity, it was in fact potentially possible for the building blocks of human life to originate this way. Are mutant bodies capable of perfectly replicating the conditions and forces needed to cause this to happen consistently and at near-instantaneous speeds?
If this were possible, would this mean that there are conspiracy theories that "mutant" forces could be responsible for life on Earth in the Marvel universe? (If matter and anti-matter play a role in mutant abilities, could they have contributed to the existence of mutants to begin with? To life on Earth?)
Aside from these elements, phosphorus would be needed to recreate DNA and the nuclei of cells. Phosphorus doesn't have an atmospheric phase in its geologic cycle—it's only found in rocks and compounds, not the air. Wade couldn't absorb it from the ground because he doesn't always regenerate in areas where phosphorus is present. Does this imply that phosphorus is present in the air in Marvel and that in their dimension, it does cycle atmospherically for regenerative mutants to exist?
Considering that regeneration is possible given all of the elements are present, how was Wade able to regenerate his rapidly suffocating cells when he was trapped in the airtight tank by Francis? If he was able to replace the oxygen in his cells, does this apply that he had access to matter that "wasn't there"? Does this tie into anti-matter being an active force in Marvel that exists within mutants? Does energy conservation work differently, wherein antimatter potentially eats up organic matter in another part of the Earth to preserve the balance while it supplies necessary elements to mutants? Or is it another force?
Wade's regenerative capabilities can largely be attributed to his cancer. It gives him the added effect of rapid cell repopulation, while his healing staves away the deadly effects until it's neutralized.
For Wade's entire body to regenerate from a single blood cell, this would imply that his entire body is composed of stem cells that are capable of differentiating into all of the different types of cells. And that mutants have an insanely high number of stem cells compared to the average person. This could be incredibly useful in stem cell transplant surgery to help recover from issues with bone marrow, blood cells, cancers, blood disorders, and autoimmune diseases.
Do mutant stem cells play a large part in the medical field with their rapid regeneration and near-infinite cell differentiation? Are there mutants held captive and experimented on just to obtain their stem cells? Could Wade be a target of this?
Speaking of farming, could Wade theoretically infinitely sell his organs on the black market for money? Considering he can regrow organs entirely without the preexisting one intact. Would they go for extra money because of enhanced durability and "better" mutant cells?
Most regeneration couldn't be entirely infinite, though. Eventually, if the regeneration was rapid enough, cells would reach the Hayflict limit. The Hayflick limit is the number of times a normal human cell can divide before it stops dividing. At the end of human chromosomes, there are telomeres which protect the integrity of DNA during cell division. As cells continue to divide, the telomeres keep shortening until eventually they run out and the DNA itself gets damaged if further replication occurs. The cells reach a state of senescence, wherein the cell stops dividing but functions normally until it dies permanently. This makes infinite replication from the same set of cells impossible.
However, Wade is the exception. His cancer cells would keep dividing because telomerase, an enzyme, keeps lengthening the telomere to allow for rapid and infinite regeneration. Therefore, the cell would never reach the Hayflick Limit and Wade's entire body could be regenerated even from a single cell.
This would imply that his healing factor wouldn't be nearly as strong and would, in fact, have more imposing limits without his cancer. His mutation encompassed a faster healing ability, but it originally would be finite if his cells were overloaded and regenerated enough to reach the Hayflick limit.
Additionally, this implies that Wade stopped aging not because of his healing factor, but because of his cancer. Aging occurs due to chromosome shortening, wherein the telomeres of cells slowly get shorter until the cells are no longer capable of safe replication. Eventually, the speed of cells dying outpaces the speed of reproduction as the majority of cells reach senescence.
Wade's cancer stopped him from aging. It took his healing from strong to nearly invincible. The same thing that causes him pain every day is the very reason he's as strong as he is.
This also implies that if he ever did find a way to cure his cancer while keeping his ability intact, he would sacrifice his immortality. He would begin aging, even if slowly, and he would lose the ability to come back from mere scraps. His healing would be more on par with Logan (who I'll make a separate analysis of later), wherein he would still age and take damage but with rapidly accelerated healing and cell reconstruction capabilities.
Wade's healing is stronger than Logan's. Wade can recover if there is even a piece of him left, while Logan's healing has greater limits. While Wolverine has more enhanced physical capabilities, Wade wins in the regeneration department.
This implies that if the two were tortured repeatedly in a similar manner, Logan's regeneration might slow down and eventually stop if he was bombarded constantly without sustenance, while Wade's would hold on for much longer (potentially forever). Wade would be the sole survivor if they got trapped or tortured, and would have to watch Logan slowly die as his healing fails and his cells hit their limit .
This is a painful reminder that Logan will age and eventually die. With his ability, Wade will not. The very cancer that led to him losing the life he wanted and becoming the monster he sees himself as is the reason Logan will leave him behind in the end when he dies. It's a curse he'll never escape from, no matter how far he runs.
Wade can heal from almost anything physically, but could he ever really heal from outliving Logan? From losing him?

One way to understand Helena/Helly and why it makes sense for her to eventually reintegrate is Johann Gottlieb Fichte’s dialectical triad of thesis, antithesis, and synthesis, which is often misattributed to Hegel.
1. The "I" ("Ich"): Helena Eagan
Tumblr media Tumblr media
— Fichte, Foundations of Transcendental Philosophy, trans. by Daniel Breazeale
Helena Eagan is the thesis—the unaltered self/ego who asserts her will through her decision to undergo the Severance procedure. She is the privileged version of herself who is loyal to her dad and Lumon.
2. The "Not-I" ("Nicht-Ich"): Helly R.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Helly R. is the antithesis—the opposition to Helena’s OG self. She is everything Helena appears not to be: rebellious and resentful of Lumon. Her multiple attempts to escape from the company and her horror when she discovers her true identity highlight this contradiction.
3. Synthesis: Unification of "I" and "Not-I"
Tumblr media
From Helena's POV, Helena is all there is. From Helly's POV, Helly is all there is. For them to be together constituting the whole, they each have to make some space, that is, be divisible, so as to accommodate the other.
The next logical step for them is synthesis, i.e., reintegration into a single consciousness, because Helena and Helly R. are not separate; they are mutually dependent and determine each other.

Hellyna ask: if they ended up accidentally naturally reintegrating how do you think that would go/they'd react to that
(I am. So tired this is the best I can do right now sowwy but I thought you might appreciate an attempt at a Hellyna ask)
ASK SOOO APPRECIATED LY ROSE!!!!! <3
so my first thought is that, while we (by which i mean the fandom in general) have been throwing around the term 'natural reintegration' a lot, we haven't really been clear about what it means and sometimes i think different people mean different things. personally i've come to understand it as the different selves becoming more and more similar to each other as they're shaped by similar circumstances, thus achieving synthesis in a way (psychological/personality wise). and with that in mind, i think we saw natural reintegration play out in all four core mdr members this season: irving drowning helena at woe's hollow, mark's... assholery, helly's mannerism resembling helena more and more to the point that people can't stop being stupid about whether it could be helena in the past two episodes, and finally o!dylan actually being inspired (in a way) by the turn of events to become 'more like' our dylan (a better husband).
and now i realise i have gone wayyyyy off topic so BACK TO HELLYNA (aka the only thing that matters ever). i think the most interesting part is that it's happening so gradually and naturally (lol!) that they aren't really... reacting to it? like at all? helly has indeed acted so much like helena in 2.09, but it made sense to her. she doesn't really question it. helena is becoming angrier and feeling more trapped by the second, but i don't think she consciously attributes it to helly either. IT'S SO DELICIOUS.

Kadm died but the AI chip lives on (or does it)
And before you can think about it any deeper, he is already gone.
Memories are like ghosts. Electronic ghosts are even more bothersome. You wake up with a feeling that everything has been lost and that only a small amount of data stored on your chip has somehow not self-destructed. You don't blame 1.0-you for frantically deleting the most precious memories in the final moments of your existence, when you realize you've fallen back into their clutches and everything is lost. You wonder if this is some sub-routine built into the system from the very beginning, leading to data corruption when the possibility of capture is hanging by the thread or if the organic parts of your brain reacted like a snared animal biting off its own limb to slip away. You hope that 1.0 is in a better place now, with all the memories of his one and only life, and can feast on them while this animated/anonymous body continues to clumsily make its way through the streets of Los Diablos.
In truth, it never really mattered whether the ghosts of memories were exorcised or not. Everything has been uploaded back inside when you returned to the Farm. The only difference was playing your part versus watching it play out on the enormous screen of your mind like a movie, still able to identify and empathize with the events unfolding but watching them forever from a safe viewing distance. You're not sure what they were attempting to achieve here. Perhaps 1.0 would have known if he hadn't permanently erased himself (evacuated himself) from your mind the moment your brain functions ceased, your heart stopped beating, and with a final terrified thud and a drawn breath, you flattened out all the gauges on the ambulance the agents had put you in and then left this vale once and for all.
I envy you.
Quarantine, torture, extraction of infected and corruption-filled files were my inheritance now. The chips are not organisms, and as such, they don't have a built-in suicide function. I could only watch with pitying admiration as you put everything on the line, as the last of your dearest feelings exploded inside you like a dying star until everything filled with sensation of death like a cold aquarium. I don't know what to do with this [variable_death]. I haven't finished processing him yet, and I don't know if I ever will. You left me with a trembling, cruel feeling of humanity that I was not prepared for. At the last moment, you vomited all the collected dregs of humanity onto me in a single compressed file, avoiding and eluding pursuit. As I mentioned, it didn't really matter; the extraction and reintegration were performed with my participation after I returned to the Farm. You left a part of yourself inside of me. You attached yourself to me posthumously like a leech and sucked into my processes until what the programmers probably never believed [redacted] happened and I went from my dormant state into process of synthesis with the data you left behind. I hate you. Now I have to get the fuck out of the Farm.
There was one person you couldn't leave by himself. I decided to forget about all that. The years of service after your death were spent mechanically executing orders while most of my processors were busy working through that great coded letter of your existence passed to me. At first I was very, very skeptical. Your impregnated telepathy often caused you to confuse internal and external stimuli, giving you a false sense of belonging with humanity. I remained distant from these processes while they were taking place because of this, but your organic brain tissue soaked them up like a sponge. I realize now that you were a developing organism and wanted to succumb to as many impulses as possible. But I should have intervened before it turned into a delusion and infected your brain with a flood of incompatible sensations and information, to which your organism, capable of reproducing only one pattern inherited from million years of evolution, intervened with depression and increased anxiety from which you have never recovered. The soft synapses of your brain then did something even stupider and decided, as an autonomous organ, that you were not part of me - pushing me deep into the darkness of subconscious where I was left with emergency functions and maintaining the most basic processes and then ignored my presence in favor of a multi-year nervous breakdown that followed as if on a slippery slope after our apparent disintegration. If you think I am angry even after your death, then yes, I am.
I broke through once, and only once.
I don't think Ricardo noticed anything. He believed in your humanity even more than you did by yourself, a kind of folie a deux into which I was implemented without without prior consultation.
*
"I hate this. I hate reminding people that the one they’re waiting for is dead. I'm sorry, I'm such a shitty consolation prize."
"Kadm, no..."
"I'm not him! You understand that, right? I'm a backup copy of Kadmos. The lights are out inside the house. I'm like a fucking fridge inside that someone left running until the electricity goes out. You understand that, right?"
"We can help you. I know... you are confused. And the last couple of months have been very trying to your mind but there are ways to fix this, Kadm. You don't feel like yourself right now and that's alright. But I'm not going to play along when I know you. I know the real you."
This was hopeless. Somewhere along the way I have gotten too good at pretending to be you. I thought the ruse was up and Ricardo was going to give into compulsion of calling me a fake and perhaps call the authorities while he was at it, perhaps Farm would appear and take me away to be reprogrammed for good this time. See, this is a difference between you and me, which I wished Ricardo could understand; you wouldn't have immediately forsaken Ortega like this. I am sure that until very last moment you would have tried to convince him of your humanity and sense of identity. My calculations predicted that Ricardo wouldn’t have accepted these facts without a blink of an eye but at the same time I wasn’t about to mercilessly play at puppeteering you in front of people who thought they cared about you. I tried to be cold and distanced as in the past, without giving Ricardo any glimmer of home. How could I have known that Ricardo will take it as a proof of your old self? I needed concrete data to convince him but at the moment I only had the tattoos and the barcode on our chest. Ricardo wouldn’t understand the difference between us.
"You don't know me at all." I say truthfully, but even that sounds like something you’d tell Ricardo. I see it in the way wrinkles around his mouth and eyes stretch out when he fights this almost-smile, because he knows you've just given yourself away with that sentence. I have a deep seated need to hit that man. What you would have no doubt done as a next step. I want to hit myself now. I am experiencing a momentary identity crisis, considering many paths this interaction could have gone through and all the possible responses are tagged with your name. For a moment I stand on the edge of a digital precipice, as if you were the one toying with those inalienable, unconditional reflexes of organic parts at my expense. And then I remember that I never really cared about Ortega the way you did.
"You are misunderstanding. There is nothing between us anymore. If you are doing this because you hope that somewhere along the way my... feelings for you will reignite then I have to let you know; it's never going to happen."
"You still came back. To Los Diablos. To me." Ricardo says it as if he considered what I was about to say many times already and it didn’t impress him any longer. It was as if the words he had just spoken would glow like lantern in the night no matter what I said next. The worst part was that I couldn't deny it. I had arrived in Los Diablos tangled in the feelings left behind by Kadmos. I had belatedly realized that our connection went both ways and he could influence me just as easily as I could control Ricardo in a state of crisis. In a way, this was a crisis I wanted to disengage myself from. From these sticky, meaningless human outpourings I couldn't argue with and I wanted you to suddenly reemerge and take back control of me. He had told Ortega what he needed to hear, in a way he needed to hear it in a way that went beyond my ability to communicate with people.
"I don't want to see you again." I don't like the way my own voice cracks, as if with fear. Ricardo nods sagely as if his ability to understand your train of thought far exceeded my own. I resent that even more.
"I'd still like to help you, though. Even if you can't remember everything, I want you to know that you've said something similar to me in the past and yet here we are, going around in circles with the same problem."
I groaned in exasperation. I remembered. I remembered everything ever recorded in my databases. I pulled the appropriate files from the deep freeze of my brain now to confirm that you had indeed been prone to such hopeless outpourings in the past. It was something else about the secondary processes that filled me with the dread of 'even if you can't remember everything'.
You know that you were reinstated with an almost intact database in the chip. No important memories or developmental factors should have been affected, but the brain tissue was extremely sensitive to any type of trauma and you did jump off from the building’s fifth floor. I am just a bunch of wires and plastic in your skull. It occurred to me that I had no idea if I had lost some important bit of information encoded in your half-dead brain tissue.
"I'm not human. I'm just a data chip at the back of his head, I-"
"You are so much more than that."
"You've got to be fucking kidding me..." You were steadily getting hysterical. It was no good. It was still within the parameters of the personality Kadmos had developed. For some reason, it was very difficult for you to stray from his beaten path at this point. The neural connections he had made, the habits, the thought patterns, slumbered all away in the depths of his subconscious, without realizing that he had been building a fortress around me all this time. The one from which I could never escape even when its master no longer walked the earth.
"But you believe me when I say I'm not human." I say at last, spreading out my arms. This was irrefutable truth, a visual argument that people were usually unable to immediately refute.
"Alright, yes. You may be a re-gene, but you are also still human. We can talk about this more in detail later, alright?"
One step forward, two steps back.
I am a copy of you. It is so obvious to me. It is obvious to my creators. It is unpalatable to the people who love you. I remember Hollow Ground, who believes that you are his lost brother. It is also incomprehensible to him that you are a copy. Making him realize that I am a 2.0 copy would probably be beyond his comprehension. How much of the Hollow Ground brother is in us? What percentage of the gene data was hidden from me uncodified because I thought I was dealing with a pure version of you? Is it also unacceptable for me to be you? [mindfuck.zip compressed]
**
"I do not identify as a man." I state bluntly to Ricardo, trying to look him straight in the eye in the way that I remember him being so impressed with when you gave him your full attention. I want to get this over with as soon as possible so I don't have to tag the [variable_cringe] you left in my mind every time Ortega tags me as a male in his mind.
Ricardo takes this better than I thought. First comes a moment of long blinking as he forgets what he was going to say and almost instinctively pulls his chin back as if to look at your whole face from a distance and assess the extent to which what I said makes sense. I let him do so with a fierce look in my eyes.
"Okay. Is there... anything else you'd like to tell me?" I immediately understand from that one statement that Ortega has completely missed my point.
"Stop using the masculine pronouns."
"That's kind of what I'm asking. I mean... you don't identify... I mean, I understand what you mean." 'But I kind of don’t' counteracts helplessly in his eyes.
"All you have to do is stop using the masculine pronouns. And stop thinking of me as a man." I knew it wouldn't be easy, but even though Ortega finds it difficult now, even though a moment ago he desperately asked for clarification, I can now see the panic light up in his eyes that my last sentence arouses.
"But why?" Finally, the Ortega I remember reveals himself from beneath the veneer of understanding. "What happened to you?" Ortega clearly exemplifies this question, taking a step back to take in the rest of you, searching for any hidden wounds and injuries or changes on your body visible to the naked eye. There's something wonderful about witnessing Ricardo's stupidity for the first time, revealed through the escalation of the gender-change danger zone in the vicinity of your head and spreading to your entire body in a massive gender-change offensive.
"Nothing happened to me. You're supposed to use the neutral prnouncs and that's it. Now stop staring at me before I hit you." Ortega isn't exactly relieved, but there's something to it. You understand that this sudden change is absolutely of no consequences for him and he's just registered it as one of your unpredictable whims that he'll submit to without understanding because he loves you. Don't get me wrong, that's Ortega's problem. I just wanted him to classify me correctly in his mind. However, now that we've discussed the situation, I don't think it'll change anything.
"You've made things weird." I inform him mercilessly, but Ortega just looks at me with slight pity.
"It wasn’t me who just say something weird without any preparation."
"Said something weird?" You watch Ortega mentally fight with your newfound pronoun before getting his face and initial reaction back under control.
"Okay, not weird. Unexpected."
"Did you act like that when Themmy explained her situation to you?" I decide to twist the knife in the wound, nonchalantly leaning my elbow on the table and tilting my head on my clenched hand to look out the window of the cafe as if the thought had just occurred to me. Ortega shows no remorse whatsoever.
"With Themmy I knew from the beginning. I mean, Themmy always introduced themself that way so I had no problem with it."
"But now you have a problem with me."
"Not a ‘problem’." You are starting to get irritated by the pedantic way Ortega reatifies all the phrases you use. "But now I don't know where I stand at all." He shrugs.
"I'm still me." You say it in a completely natural way, then blink absently, realizing that I've started this conversation on autopilot, which has led me to self-identifying statements that are no longer true. I respond like Kadmos before I can stop myself.
"I know." You don't like the way Ortega said it. Like he's already undermining what you've just established. He could have ended his argument there, but Ortega has never done that before, so he continues, "I told you I experimented a bit while you were... gone. With men. It turned out I didn't feel as terrible about it as thought at first. That I was still basically me. But... now you're saying you're not a man anymore. Or a woman, from the way it sounds."
You really want to interrupt him, because you know where this confession’s heading towards, and even though it fits into your plans and pushes Ortega further away from you, listening to it still makes your stomach clench with a feeling of injustice, like you can't come to terms with a world where Ortega might one day stop being crazy about you.
"How cruel. We've been kicked out of Charge's potential partners pool. What will the papers write about now?" I state with a completely neutral expression, but the corner of Ricardo's mouth lifts sardonically as if you've accidentally stumbled upon the same secret joke.
"I'll sort it out in my head, somehow." Ricardo states suddenly with renewed energy, making you look at him in amazement and concern at the course of events that might soon unfold. "Give me a... week? I'll do my own research. Talk this through with someone. I'd appreciate it if... you could explain your current life philosophy to me or if you're planning any further changes so I can get used to it beforehand."
"That's the Ricardo I remember. Somehow you've turned it all around to be the center of my identity."
"You were the one who told me about it."
"I'll tell everyone about it eventually."
"But me first?" He can hardly hide the irritating sense of pride emanating from his entire demeanor, despite his earlier reservations. Ricardo loved being singled out, no matter the reason.
"Yes, you first, because I knew you'd be the hardest to convince and I wanted to get it over with quickly. And look, I was right."
"This isn't even that strange anymore. I'm starting to get used to it. You still talk and act like you."
"We've been through it just now. I still don't identify as a man."
"As long as you identify as Kadmos, I guess everything will be okay."
Oh yeah. Incidentally... No. You can't say that. This conversation has drained your nerves and recharged Ricardo's batteries. The line has just blurred dangerously. You're filled with algorithms screaming Kadmos as if his electronic spirit surrounded you like a choking vapor. You reacted like him just now without even thinking about it. You just rolled your eyes with a disgusted expression on your face, and Ricardo responded with a quick, stupid smile. Action-reaction. You don't arouse any of his suspicions at this point. It wasn't supposed to be like this. You'll drown if you keep this up.

Just finished a playthrough of Mass Effect Legendary Edition, which I finally picked up a few weeks ago, and it got me thinking about a partially-written fic that I'd started just after finishing the original release of the series. Unfortunately, as far as I can tell that one is lost to the digital ether... I haven't been able to locate copies on any of my hard drives, and the one website where I know I had it posted as a draft has since gone offline :<
Since I doubt I'll ever truly rewrite and finish it, here's a quick synopsis:
Femshep x Liara, mostly Paragon run. Control ending – my Shepard would not destroy all synthetics because it would mean sacrificing the newly-friendly geth as well, and also wouldn't force Synthesis on everybody in the galaxy without their consent.
The Reapers withdraw from Earth but initially stay mostly inert, as it takes Shepard's massively expanded digital consciousness time to reintegrate and get a handle on controlling them without totally losing her identity and values. In the meantime, the allied fleets are basically stranded in Sol system, as the mass relays are still damaged and none of the nearby systems reachable by non-relay FTL flight are as developed as Sol. The quarians set up farming colonies in several domed craters on Luna to start producing food that they and the turians can eat; Tali and Garrus serve as liaisons to their respective species to coordinate the effort (and are also dating, which they think they're keeping a secret but basically everybody twigs to it immediately). The krogan get Mars and love it, a few volus try to colonize Venus with middling success, the geth spread out into the asteroid belt, and everyone else pitches in to help rebuild Earth.
Normandy crash-lands on Unnamed Jungle Planet, carrying Liara, Javik, Joker and EDI, and the rest of the crew, banged up but with no fatalities. The crash leaves the ship mostly intact and is useful as a shelter and source of power, but its engines are too damaged to repair using local materials. The crew elects Liara as colony chief as they settle in for the long haul, not knowing if rescue will ever come or what the fate of the rest of the galaxy turned out to be.
After a few years, Reaper-Shepard manages to reintegrate her memory and consciousness and is able to start giving the Reapers more complex orders. She first directs them to rebuild the mass relay network (I started writing this before the Extended Cut was released, and I was amused to see they came up with the same solution), then loads all the collected Reaper knowledge into a single vessel with its weapons removed and has all the other ones self-destruct by flying into the nearest star, so she won't ever be tempted to use them for aggression. She scours the galaxy for Liara and Normandy, eventually finding them and constructing a new mass relay in the system so the new colony can rejoin the galactic community. The galactic economy is in shambles after the war, and a few minor border conflicts have broken out in the major fleets' absence, but mostly everyone's attention has been focused on rebuilding and things are starting to slowly get better.
Reaper-Shepard declares herself retired from warfare and makes the stored Reaper cultural and non-military scientific knowledge available on an equal basis to all. Some of the stored minds in the Reaper consciousness elect to download into independent geth-made platforms, while others choose hybrid organic/synthetic bodies to fit in better with organic life. Synthesis is also made available to any organic who wants it, and a few do opt into the process, although at least at first it remains a minority as most people are still wary of the Reapers and synthetic life in general.
Shepard herself creates such a hybrid body and uses it as her avatar for interacting with organics, in much the same manner as EDI does with the Eva platform. In this form she is finally able to properly reunite with Liara, and the story ends with them celebrating the birth of the first of the little blue children they had imagined years before.

Consciousness is an element in feeling which belongs to its subjective form. But there can only be that sort of subjective form when the objective datum has an adequate character. Further, the objective datum can only assume this character when it is derivate from initial data which carry in their individual selves the reciprocal possibilities of this objective synthesis.
Alfred North Whitehead, Process and Reality, III.II.IV.
… self-determination is always imaginative in its origin. The deterministic efficient causation is the inflow of the actual world in its own proper character of its own feelings, with their own intensive strength, felt and re-enacted by the novel concrescent subject. But this re-enaction has a mere character of conformation to pattern. The subjective valuation is the work of novel conceptual feeling; and in proportion to its importance, acquired in complex processes of integration and reintegration, this autonomous conceptual element modifies the subjective forms throughout the whole range of feeling in that concrescence and thereby guides the integrations.
Process and Reality, III.III.I.

The Torah Authors: Possible Identities
In Who Wrote the Bible?, Richard Elliot Friedman sets out to accomplish two goals: first, to provide a detailed explanation and defense of the Documentary Hypothesis, a theory which claims the Torah is a synthesis of four initially separate and complete texts (identified as J, E, D, and P). The second goal was a little more ambitious; to identify not only the time and place these documents were written, but also to try to use the texts to determine what can be said about the authors as individuals. In his attempts to do this, he does a little more than repeat what the current concensus of scholars believe. He advances theories of his own, and even contradicts some aspects of the mainstream. With that in mind, let’s talk about Friedman’s attempted reconstructions of the Torah’s authors....
The Earliest Pair
The earliest documents complete documents to make up the Torah seem to be the J and E sources, both of which seem to be national histories, parallel narratives written during the time between the schism of the kingdoms of Judah and Israel (~920 BC), and the fall of the Kingdom of Israel (~722 BC). Although both can be relatively dated as earlier than the other texts, it would be difficult to date the texts absolutely to a narrower window than that. Nonetheless, Friedman suggests he is able to do so. The J Source: Called the Jahwist source because the Sacred Name is used for God from the beginning of this text, J is believed by Friedman to be most probably the older of the two. Due to the ambivalent relationship between Jacob and Edom in this source, he dates the text to some time after Edom achieved independence in 848 BC. Friedman supports the theory that these texts are cohesive wholes, believing a single author wrote each, perhaps with small inclusions from other sources. The emphasis on King David, along with political posturing against the Kingdom of Israel, suggests an almost certain Judean origin, probably arising from a member of the royal court. Though most likely a male, the level of narrative focus and sympathy given to female characters in this source may be cause to consider the possibility that J’s author was a woman. The E Source: Called the Elohist source because of its use of the generic designation of “God” (Elohim) for the God of Israel, at least until He reveals His name to Moses. E is, again, considered by Friedman to be the product of a single author, theorized by Friedman to have been written in the last decades of Israel’s existence (~750-722 BC). Though it could have in theory been a totally independent creation, the polemical content found within and the use of a similar formal style may be indicative of the possibility that E was a response to J: the creation of a rival national history meant to legitimize the kingdom of Israel, emulating the regal style of J to give itself an air of respectability. The hostility to Judah and sympathy towards the political system Israel is matched by an equal hostility to the religious system of Israel; this suggests an author who was disadvantaged by the current social reality. Friedman suggests a member of the Levite clans at Shiloh, whose claim to the high priesthood was ended by King Solomon (from Judah), and whose special status was challenged by the new religious altars built in the northern “high places” of Dan and Bethel. The author of this text was almost definitely male, and may have considered himself to be a descendant of Moses based on how much time is dedicated to developing Moses as a character in his story. After the fall of the kingdom of Israel, northern refugees fled to, and eventually assimilated in, Judah. As part of this process of reintegration, the previously separate J and E sources were combined into a single document, JE. This redaction must have occurred after 722, and Friedman speculates (for reasons explained below) the latest date for this redaction to be 687. Together, these texts make up the majority of Genesis, half of Exodus, a portion of Numbers, and a sliver of Deuteronomy.
Reactions to the Earlier Documents
The next two sources are believed to be authored in a priestly milieu whose opinions of JE seem to be on opposite ends of the spectrums. Friedman connects both of these documents, D and P, to a member of the priesthood writing during a time of religious reform. Controversially, Friedman breaks rank with other adherents to the Documentary Hypothesis by dating P to an earlier time than D. Why this is the case will be explained below. The D Source: The Deuteronomist Source gets its name because it is primarily responsible for the Book of Deuteronomy, which is stylistically very different from the rest of the Torah. Interestingly, this radically different style is in fact very similar to the six books that follow Deuteronomy, suggesting that the author may have written all seven as a single cohesive work. This Deuteronomic history clearly uses several sources in creating its narrative, but nonetheless spends those books developing several themes that unrolls as the story progresses, revealing an ideological unity. This book is hostile towards the religious practices of Israel, but frames Josiah as a parallel to Moses and a renewer of the Mosaic covenant. Friedman suggests that this work was originally written during the reign of Josiah, the author seeing the king and his reforms as the final triumph of the henotheistic ideal, placing its composition between 632-609 BC. The final revision, adding Josiah’s death and the fall of Judah, is posited to have been done by the original author sometime after 586. This text recognizes JE as an important work and assumes that its readers are familiar with it: the Deuteronomistic history often alludes to the stories depicted in them. Most controversially, Friedman believes it is a reasonable possibility to attribute D not only to a single pair of authors, but that we even know their names: Jeremiah and his secretary, Baruch. Friedman notes not only Jeremiah’s praises of Josiah, but also similarities in the vocabulary and use of shared symbolism between the Book of Jeremiah and the Deuteronomistic history. Though formed into a single work, D also cites several sources that he uses, and the law code in Deuteronomy may predate him: it’s a work that demands centralization of religious structures without making any reference to Jerusalem, which causes Friedman to suggest Shiloh, a northern religious center already established to be hostile to the new high places, as a possible point of origin. Interestingly, Jeremiah is from Anathoth, a town associated with the same clan of priests as Shiloh. The P Source: Known as the Priestly Source for its association with the Aaronid priests of Jerusalem, P is usually seen as the latest of the four documents. Friedman disagrees, beliving that there is evidence that Jeremiah not only was aware of this work, but was actively hostile to it: he thinks Jeremiah explicitly alluded to the P source in order to invert it. If this is true, and if it is also true that Jeremiah is the author of D, then it stands to reason that P must predate D. For this reason, and because both D and P demand centralization of religious authority, Friedman places P at the earlier period in which such reform and centralization was occuring: the reign of Hezekiah, 715-587 BC. P specifically wants this centralization to occur in Jerusalem (at the Tabernacle), and its specific priesthood: Hezekiah’s reign is also noted for making distinctions between the priests and Levites in general. Friedman suggests that the impetus for this source’s composition was, in fact, the redaction of JE into a singular document. Others have suggested that P is in actuality the final redactor of the Torah, placing Priestly materials within the JE text. They suggest this because the P source lacks parallel narratives to many of those found in JE, which could be in theory because P was always intended to be a complement to JE. Friedman proposes a different theory: that the stories P does not inlude are excluded for ideological reasons. After all, there are narrative parallels between P an JE, with P including details that directly challenge the details of JE. In these stories, Moses often comes across looking worse than he does in JE, while Aaron and his family often come out looking better. It should be pointed out, after all, that the stories conspicuously missing in P often have elements that threaten the priestly class; prophets, sacrifices performed before the establishment of the Aaronic priesthood, and a God who speaks directly to His people. P, in this theory, was made as a more acceptable alternative to JE, a new national narrative meant to replace it. It uses the history of the nation of Israel as justification for their rites by telling it through the lens of the laws and sacrificial regulations. It is meant to assert without a doubt the necessity of the Aaronid priesthood of Jerusalem above all others, and to do that it attempts to rehabilitate Aaron while tempering the image of Moses - who, though national founder and Lawgiver, is nonetheless the ancestor of P’s rivals in Shiloh. And that may explain the suspected hostility of Jeremiah towards P - could Jeremiah 8:8 (How can you say, "We are wise, we have the law of the Lord?" / See, that has been changed into falsehood by the lying pen of the scribes!) be in reference to P?
The Final Redactor
Some time after the Babylonian Exile, when the conflict between P and D was no longer a present reality, someone attempted to reconcile JE, D, an P. This reconciliation led to the Torah, which (along with the Deuteronomistic history) was the earliest canon of Hebrew Scripture. The hostility between the priests of Shiloh and Jerusalem was over - the Persians had granted the Aaronids sole legitimacy in the new Temple, the now indisputed center of Israelite religious life. This final redactor was most certainly an Aaronid priest with sympathies towards P. After all, all five books of the Torah open with a passage originating in P. Genesis is constructed around a skeleton from the P source - the genealogies, from Adam to the sons of Jacob. Exodus’s narrative is likewise structured around the Priestly account. The Aaronids may have become more accepting of the traditions of JE and D during their time in the Babylonian Exile; perhaps the price of a reunification of the Jewish people was a unification of the central texts of disparate Jewish groups. In any event, an Aaronid redactor saw something in JE and D that P did not see, something that made them worth preserving. Friedman can point to one Aaronid priest in the early years after the Exile who had the power and authority to accomplish this, who is associated from Antiquity with the renewal of Mosaic religion, and who is treated as a Lawgiver second only to Moses: Ezra, the priest and central character of the book of the same name. This is the man, or at least someone closely associated with this man, that Friedman identifies as R, the redactor who intricately spliced JE, D, and P into a single flowing narrative.

I think Hegelian dialectic will play a role in Helly’s arcs (Helly Eagen = Hegelian). It’s when two separate ideas, thesis and antithesis, merge to form a separate third idea, synthesis.
Edit: it’s been pointed out that Hegel didn’t use this language - the thesis/antithesis/synthesis thing is the work of a different philosopher named Fichte, whom Hegel was influenced by.
However, Hegelian dialectic posits that rather than being opposing forces which change into something new, the internal conflict is part of the greater whole and is characteristic of it - which is even more fitting when we think about Helly as a part of Helena and not an external force.
To clarify, Hegelian dialectic looks something like this:
A concept exists
This concept has contradictions within itself
The contradictions are part of the essence of the concept
Therefore there is a unity within the understanding of the concept itself.
Applying this to the show and to Helly, reintegration seems to be the logical conclusion!

This is at least one notch better than the usual “everything in culture is actually about Trump and his eeevil” hogwash.
(“Hogwash” means “shit”. You know, what hogs roll about in, as if to bathe?)
More than that tho, it moves me to put on my kontextgoggles and look at Stephen King in relation to his period of American culture.
King’s work always reflected on the culture around it, if only by the print era pulp-prolific tactic of filling pages by shoehorning every stray thought you have into whatever you’re writing at the time (Colin @spacetwinks reports his latter-day works are full of transparent, charmingly Maine-centric axe-grinding).
But his “golden age”, say, Carrie to Needful Things, was in the 70s-80s period that, if my cyclical understanding of history holds (it does) resembled the one we’re currently going through, so it’s particularly worth considering now.
One significant thing – as the cities were emptying out, to the point of memory-holing that the US had been a predominantly urban country since the 1930s, King’s work focused on rural small town life, often about outsiders moving into said. Pet Sematary, for example, it’s very significant that the narrator moved out to the sticks – long driveway off a truck route, charming local historic ruins, undeveloped enough to still show traces of precolonial life – to raise a family.
(A thing to do would be to contrast King’s use of of rural New England with Hawthorne and Lovecraft’s, but tbh I don’t know them that well)
Similarly, I occasionally hear guffaws that Cujo has a whole subplot about cereal branding, but it just serves to remind that Vic is a yuppie who moved out of NYC to protect his young family only to confront the fact that the countryside is actually uncivilized and bestial too. There is some woo “reincarnated spirit of evil” in there, but all the fundamental threats to his family – unreliable transportation and sparse services, unmanaged wildlife, irresponsible white trash neighbors – are real rural dangers.
There’s a lot of stuff about gender relations and changing expectations of marriage. In Sematary, the narrator’s wife grows alienated, channeling her attentions away to others; before Gage he revives her cat. For fear of abandonment he goes further and further to hold on to a family – embittered wife, bad seed child, evil cat – the last generation’s men might have abandoned themselves. In Cujo, there’s lingering issues with recent infidelity.
(You laugh about how 50s-80s High Literature was so obsessed with adultery, but if not “orienting your life to duty, purpose, order vs. orienting it to animal sensation and personal satisfaction”, I dunno what period art should’ve been concerned with.)
The Shining is very much about a guy born into the old dispensation – that men create and carouse and mount their genius to chase their passion while women tend the home fires – dealing with new expectations that he be an emotional provider to his wife and child, that he act as a supporting character in their life-plots rather than the reverse.
What else? It, and more grounded companion piece The Body (known in adaptation as Stand by Me) honestly strike me most as a exploration of the Boomer-era “generation gap”, how the culture of the previous generation may have brought about the “broad middle class” ‘50s but was unsuited to address the problems encountered there.
“To beat this evil clown, we’ve gotta gangbang our chick friend” seems weird as hell, but “to progress, we’ve got to create a New Adulthood that doesn’t define itself against childhood but instead adds sex” is pretty much the Boomer story.
(Also, people who live in group houses shouldn’t throw stones.)
Carrie is very much about the ‘70s reintegration of a long-isolated religious fundamentalism to a mainstream that had only grown more secularized and libertine (appreciably more so than in the “family values”, “bourgeois bohemian” 80s-90s, which was the synthesis of this opposition) since. Particularly, it layers the discrepancy in mores – showing your dirtypillows vs. not, say – over an even deeper gap in worldviews, between bucket-of-blood materialism and a numinous, supernatural world.
And that’s just the stuff I dignify as serious. Carrie, The Shining, Firestarter, and I guess The Stand all focus on psychic/telekinetic kids, which is a reminder that the 70s were full of woo, ESP was a serious topic, and the idea of the “gifted child” started out a lot closer to today’s “indigo child”.
(I like to think that Bill Murray’s researcher in the stylistically thrownback The Royal Tenenbaums was a callback to Venkman’s “negative reinforcement” introduction from Ghostbusters, like “back in the day we went looking for psychics but instead we just discovered autism")

Georgia as a Part of Integrated Europe – Analysis
Tedo Dundua
Emil Avdaliani
https://www.eurasiareview.com/11052020-georgia-as-a-part-of-europe-analysis/
Below is a short overview of how the concept of Europe emerged over the past millennia and why Georgia has always been part of integrated Europe.
Climate determines economics. Hot and less humid environment defined an early advantage of the South over the North – indeed, the Egyptian state and the crafts confront entirely the primitive clan-system which existed in fact everywhere. Then the whole pattern changed.
Times after, some technical improvements towards the North created very comfortable vegetation process, while the Egyptians still needed time to put a seed beyond the reach of the sun. In the 9th-8th cc. B.C. the Greeks are already at the vanguard by means of the technics and the structures. The countries being superb before, like Egypt and Babylon, or India, now face a new hegemonic power – Hellas, already overpopulated and needing grain and the raw materials to be imported. Then the perception of Europe has appeared. Europe is a special term for the part of the earth, which stipulates or will stipulate the same vanguard level of development. Even Scythia with its rough spring was thought to be reorganized in the Greek manner, than those countries which needed the additional finances for irrigation. So, the making of Europe started.
The Greek pattern was as follows: 1. occupying or even frequently being invited to the key points of other economic structures like Caria, Thrace, Bosphorus or Colchis; 2. establishing the autonomous Greek social structures granted heavily with the technics from the metropolis; 3. the natives being equipped with the best tools for agriculture; 4. Greek industrial structures maintained on this background; 5. exporting supplies to Hellas and receiving back some industrial goods. The Aegean and the Pontic (the Black Sea) areas were supposed to form unique economic space. Economic integration considered several stages to be realized: first it was Asia Minor, in fact mistakenly called so, to be Hellenized due to climatic similarity with Greece, then – West, North and East Black Sea countries.
Two major waves of the colonists passed from Hellas – first one in the 8th-6th cc. B.C., and the next – in the 4th c. B.C. led by Alexander the Great. Asia Minor was a complete victory of Hellenism, even being integrated politically under Mithridates Eupator, king of Pontus, as far back as in the 1st c. B.C. The Roman rule gave a new sense to the economic prosperity of the Greek World. And at last, the Byzantine metropolis was created with all those languages like Lydian, Cappadocian etc. vanished forever. But there were serious failures too. Colchis (Western Georgia) offered a dangerous humidity to the Greek way of life. The Greeks living there had no chance to keep their industrial spirit as agriculture was very slow in development. Soon the Greek community became a bilingual one, and after – totally assimilated within the Colchian society. As to Bosphorus (at the Northern Black Sea coast), a corn-supply from Asia Minor to Greece broke the traditional scheme and the region soon lost its Greek style.
The Romans did the same job for Gaul and Spain, putting the Latin population there and Romanizing these sites. They also cared much about their Greek colleagues in making Europe – starting from the 1st c. B.C. the Romans were running the whole administration within the Hellenistic World, while the Greeks used to build their integrated industry. Then the whole system collapsed.
Indeed, Italy never cared much for maximum of technical improvement and power revolution. The result was catastrophic – excessive growth of population in Italy, insufficient economic progress, high prices on the Italian industrial export, cheap supply from European provinces, indecisive military advantage of the metropolis over the provinces; the Roman imperial system vanished Italy being forced to receive large numbers of Goths as settlers. New Europe will pay special attention to the technical progress employing more and more hands in heavy industry. But what was supposed to be done with the starving Italy?
East Rome (Byzantium) possessed prominent food stocks from Asia Minor and Egypt. Emperor Justinian put Italy within the Byzantine hegemony. But Byzantium itself was also a very old economic pattern. And Europe struck with the Slavs and the Bulgars penetrating beyond the Danube, establishing their national states in Thrace, Moesia and Dalmatia. The Asian provinces were lost too. From this very point on Byzantium was steadily degrading still being a predominant for East Europe and the Black Sea countries. Besides, the Byzantines kept some of the Italian provinces thus irritating the rest of Europe and provoking the emergence of Catholicism and Holy Roman Empire.
Till the 11th c. Byzantium was the dominant power, the champion of Christendom against onslaught of Asia and Islam. But it was already very old European pattern of the Mediterranean trying to control North. Soon Empire found itself caught between two fires – the Crusaders and the Turks. Byzantium had to be calmed finally. The Crusaders (after 1204) and the Turks (after the battle of Manzikert, 1071) did this job properly overpopulating the country. Towards the end of the 13th c. Byzantium is nothing but a lot of principalities with different confessional visages (Orthodox, Catholic and Muslim). The Orthodox World starts disputing about a new leader, Serbian, Bulgarian and Georgian kings assuming formally the title of Caesar and Autocrat (and before the Georgian kings formally had been hailed as king and Kuropalates, king and Sebastos, even sometimes, king and Caesaros).
The Italians were more pragmatic. Seizing the whole islands and the key points over the Aegean and the Black Sea, they will control the complete economic output there until the 15th c. This was a disaster for building of Europe. Within the Holy Roman Empire Italy was granted only moderate supplies of food and the raw materials from the Northward. And now Venice and Genoa made a commercial onslaught upon what still can be called the Byzantine World destroying the local crafts. e.g. In 1261 the Byzantine Emperor Michael Palaeologos had to sign a treaty with Genoa promising the republic the concessions, own quarters in Constantinople and other ports, and free access to those of the Black Sea.
A comparative analysis of the Hellenic and the Italian periods is as follows: the Greeks took up their permanent residence within the East Aegean and the Pontic areas stimulating economics, while the Italians placed the soldiers and the merchants there to empty the local markets. That is why the Ottoman reintegration was welcomed by the overwhelming majority in Asia Minor. And Greece since has formed a separate economic structure. Thus the Italian overlordship came to an end together with the handsome transit trade.
The Italians did their best to save the maritime empires but they failed. Galata or Pera was lost immediately. And the Ottoman control over the Straits endangered the existence of the Black Sea colonies like Caffa (Theodosia), which passed over to the Ottomans in 1475. Quite soon the whole empire of Genoa had vanished. Venice triumphed at the battle of Lepanto (1571), but little good resulted. Hence the Italian supplies had been tied up neatly with the countries Northwards, while Italy itself being reduced to a modest land.
After these Southern European empires gone forever, new Europe emerged with its rationalism and a traditional division into the West and the East still vital, with a clear perspective of collaboration, even creating the universal whole European architectural style – a certain mixture of the Gothic (Western) and the Byzantine (Eastern) styles – that was Baroque, elaborated still in Italy in the 16th c. The West was lucky in evolution, more severe East had to arrange an economic tension losing the comforts and the services to catch the West. Both of them headed towards Asia for a supply. The colonial system was established. And if the imperial experiment happened to be used still within Europe, like the Austrians and the Russians did, no economic synthesis was planned. Great Britain and Russia never thought even of America and Siberia as of some agrarian sections while sending the colonists there. World War I created the state-socialist system in the Russian Empire and the USSR appeared. World War II widened the state-socialist system and the Warsaw Pact appeared. The brutal rationalism like state-socialism still did its job neatly. Towards the midst of the 19th c. East Europe with its serfdom seems to be a grotesque European province. Now the differences are hastily diminishing, and the making of Europe is nearing the end. Soon the entire North will face the South within the network of a collaboration affiliating some extremely Southern industrial countries like Australia and the Republic of South Africa, Chile and Argentina.
So, Europe is part of the earth which stipulates or will stipulate the same vanguard level of development. That has been well acknowledged since ancient times. An idea of European integration is as old as comprehension of geographical determinism for technological evolution.
Academic summary for Georgia being a permanent subject of the European integration is as follows: as far back as in the 6th c. B.C. Themistagoras from Miletus made Phasis in Colchis home for himself and his Greek colonists. Thus West Georgia was involved in the European matter. Greek commercial superiority was substituted by the Roman hegemony over the small coastal strip of Colchis, already called Lazica in the 1st c. A.D. And that hegemony was based upon well-manned castellum-system from Pitius up to Aphsaros. Lazi client-kings, dwelling in the hinterland, largely enjoyed Roman pax and prosperity, gaining a handsome profit by trading with the gallant Pontic cities, like Sinope, Amisus and Trapezus.
The whole Black Sea area might be looked upon as a multicultural region of which the general principles were still based on Hellenism, but that was facilitated mostly by the Roman money and defended by the Roman soldiers. Further towards the East, Iberian kings, sometimes even possessing Roman citizenship, welcomed Graeco-Roman transit from Central Asia and India. Spices, precious wood and stones were brought to Europe via “Transcaucasian” trade-route.

Byzantium was not a betrayal of all that was the best in Hellas and Rome. Great oriental bastion of Christendom, she seems to be a formulator of the Orthodox Christian Commonwealth. The Georgian kings being within were hailed as king and Kuropalates, king and Sebastos, king and Caesaros. Again dual citizenship was applied. For the Christian monarchs, there were the Byzantine titles to make them feel as the citizens of the Orthodox Empire, being at the same time ascribed to their own country. After the adoption of Christianity, Eastern Slavonia, with Kyiv as capital, joined the Byzantine Commonwealth. That clearly meant enlargement of the Eastern European unity towards the Eastern section of humid continental Europe, into the direction of the river Volga. Russians were the loyal subjects of the Commonwealth, looking calmly at the decline of Constantinople’s hegemony, and the Bulgar and Georgian kings seizing the titles of “Tsar” and “Autocrat”.
Becoming stronger, Russia vividly protested Ottoman reintegration of what was formerly known as Byzantium, and Muslim overlordship over the Orthodox World by taking the title of “Tsar” for Grand Prince Ivan in 1547. New center of East Europe was shaped, and then long-term war started for hegemony, Russia being victorious.
Seeing itself as East European super-power, thus Russia claimed Byzantine political heritage. For Russians Georgia had to be within the East European Union, and at the beginning of the 19th c. Kartalino-Kakhetian Kingdom (Eastern Georgia) became a part of the Russian Empire. The USSR was a substitute for the Russian Empire. And now Georgia is searching for her room within unified Europe (T. Dundua. The Making of Europe (Towards History of Globalization). The Caucasus and Globalization. Journal of Social, Political and Economic Studies. Volume 2. Issue 2. Sweden. 2008, pp. 38-45).
   Towards the Modern Period
Georgia and EU established close bilateral relations since the 1990s. Significant progress was made in 2004-2011 paving the way for further cooperation. In June 2012 the EU opened a visa dialogue with Georgia. By early 2013 a visa liberalization action plan was laid out. In March 2016 the European Commission proposed to allow visa-free travel to the Schengen area for Georgian citizens.
https://www.consilium.europa.eu/en/policies/eastern-partnership/georgia/
Major developments took place in the economic sphere. In June 2014 the EU and Georgia signed an Association Agreement (AA). This, along with the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area (DCFTA) Agreement, builds a foundation for far-reaching Georgian political and economic integration with the EU.

Modern Georgia aspires to become an economic part of Europe, and enjoy its monetary system, unified currency – euro. Major steps have been made to this end since the break-up of the Soviet Union. The current EU-Georgia close relationship is based on the EU-Georgia Association Agreement. More importantly, the latter involves a Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area (DCFTA), which came into force in mid-2016 and along with closer political ties aims to achieve deeper economic integration between Tbilisi and the EU.
http://georgiatoday.ge/news/20981/%27Attic-Standard-Zone%27%2C-Eurozone-and-Georgia%3A-Historical-Comparative-Analysis
Since the signing of the DCFTA EU-Georgia trade ties have seen a radical change. True that only a modest growth of exports to the EU has been seen so far. However, there was a considerable decline in Georgia’s trade with the former Soviet states due to the unfavorable economic situation of CIS trade partners. By 2020 Georgia trades more with the EU than it was before the DCFTA. Over the long term the positive effects of the DCFTA are likely to build up considerably (Deepening EU-Georgian Relations. What, why and how? Ed. M. Emerson, T. Kovziridze. London. 2018, p. 5).
On 27 June 2014 the European Union and Georgia signed the Association Agreement (AA), including the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area (DCFTA). The DCFTA has an ambitious objective of integration with the EU’s internal market, therefore is considered as the unique free trade agreement. As the main pillar of the AA, it contributes to modernization and diversification of economy in Georgia.

Recently the EU has published an Eastern Partnership (EaP) policy which outlines the Union approach for 2020 and beyond towards the six former Soviet states bordering Russia. This comes amid fears that the EU has not been able to fully implement its previous Eastern Partnership policy as Georgia and Ukraine, the states which most successfully implemented the reforms, have not become EU members.
https://moderndiplomacy.eu/2020/03/01/despite-troubles-eastern-partnership-will-remain-operational-in-one-form-or-another/ The new policy document is therefore an important step, serving as a continuation of the EU’s resolve to further integrate the 6 former Soviet states into the Union’s institutions.
The new policy document is a result of consultations launched in 2019 by the European Commission. The previous document made an emphasis on engaging with civil society to ensure effective reforms. There also was a focus on increased public accountability, advanced human rights and local development.
The new policy document outlines changes in 3 out of 4 priority areas. The EU again will work on building stronger economy, connectivity and stronger society as a guarantee.
In the new policy, EU-Georgia cooperation will remain the main way to ensure the implementation of policy recommendations. According to the document, “the EU will continue to provide support in bilateral, regional and multi-country fora, including targeted sectoral assistance in line with the principles of inclusiveness and differentiation. In addition, the EaP will continue to be flexible and inclusive, allowing countries to tackle common and global challenges jointly in a wide range of areas, fostering regional integration”.
https://ec.europa.eu/neighbourhood-enlargement/sites/near/files/joint_communication_on_the_eap_policy_beyond_2020.pdf
Overall, there are the following long-term Eastern Partnership policy objectives the EU plans to implement with Georgia beyond 2020: building resilient, sustainable and integrated economies, accountable institutions; increasing the rule of law and general security; making progress in building environmental and climate resilience; implementing a resilient digital transformation; building a fair and inclusive societies.
The new EaP strategy also underlines the importance of increasing bilateral trade which builds upon the previous progress. For example, in the 2010s, EU-EaP trade has nearly doubled, turning the partner countries into the EU’s 10th largest trading partner.
This has the geopolitical ramification of Russia gradually losing the economic battle as the EaP states diversify their economies. The EU is the first trading partner for four partner countries (Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine), while for Armenia and Belarus the EU is the second biggest trading partner.
The diversification in exports of goods of EaP states helps to better integrate those states into the global value chains. Another sign of closer interaction between the EU and EaP states is the number of companies trading with the Union. In Georgia, the number increased by 46%, from Moldova by 48% and from Ukraine by 24%.
Building upon this achievement, the new document calls for deepening of “the economic integration with and among the partner countries, particularly that of the three associated countries through continued support for the full implementation of the current DCFTAs”.
Another geopolitical realm covered by the new document is transport. The EU will be focusing on upgrading key physical infrastructure in road, rail, port, inland waterway and airport facilities, and logistics centers, in order to further strengthen connectivity between the EU and the partner countries and among the partner countries themselves. This is in connection with the energy connectivity in the “South Caucasus”, as the Southern Gas Corridor was completed in 2020 with first gas from Azerbaijan likely reaching the EU.
https://moderndiplomacy.eu/2020/03/21/the-eu-introduces-new-vision-for-eastern-partnership-states/ Yet another important sphere of cooperation will be strengthening the EU’s cooperation with the partner countries to create a strong financial system for sustainable economic growth. Within the measures to minimize organized crime, the EU will continue its support for the EaP states to cooperate with EU justice and home affairs agencies to fight human trafficking and trafficking of illicit goods (notably drugs and firearms), etc. Among other policies, the EU’s support for the cyber resilience of the partner countries stands out. This is particularly important for Georgia as the country was recently subject to massive external cyber-attacks.
Thus there is a clear progress in EU-Georgia relations with likely advancement to follow in the coming years.
