SXDSHXWTY - REJUVENATOR

(Hardcore Breaks, Drum and Bass, Jungle)

Chock full of retro game samples and amen breaks, SXDSHXWTY's latest project is sweet and simple drum 'n' bass with a decidedly digital sheen to it. While not built to be the most hypnotic hardcore breaks out there, REJUVENATOR's unorthodox take on fast-paced jungle and D'n'B is still a pleasure all around.

SXDSHXWTY's nostalgia-infused breaks are a more than familiar sound for modern drum 'n' bass, but it's in how they take advantage of bright video game samples and colorful synth work that keeps their music unique and refreshing. Though they're currently one of the smaller voices in the underground jungle/breakcore scene right now, their songs can battle with the best of them, SXDSHXWTY's gooey basslines and frantic drum programming sturdy and confident while calling back to the jungle-inspired soundtracks of late 90s video game soundtracks; even if you've heard breaks like this before, few others can manage such a faithful recreation of the past. And on their latest release REJUVENATOR, they again prove just how well they can bring that insular yet propulsive sound to life, Parappa the Rapper and Sonic the Hedgehog voice clips interspersed between some of the most atmospheric and colorful electronica this year. REJUVENATOR's video-gamey sound may seem a bit silly at first glance, but they know exactly what they're doing. REJUVENATOR runs off tried and true drum 'n' bass techniques - the amen break, huge atmospheric synths to fill the mix, a jumpy bassline to give another rhythmic push to the music - but using what's familiar allows SXDSHXWTY to differentiate themselves in spirit rather than in technicalities. Lychee Soul Eater kicks things off with constantly shifting synth pads and a squelching synth bass, the song's quick pace and scattered sampling just a taste of what's to come later, and later tracks like the TURQUOISEDEATH-assisted banger Bounce Box Deluxe or Rave Racers with Seynoe inject a double dose of everything with their multiple beat switches and dense sampling. It does at times start to feel like the album's jubilance can get in the way of it approaching different ideas - eight tracks of back-to-back 90s jungle revivalism only gives you so much room -  but at a slim 29 minutes dispersed across eight tracks, REJUVENATOR never overstays its welcome and always has a new perspective to offer on things, be it in Townsweeper03's fuzzy synths and fiery drum 'n' bass groove or Airwave Castle's creative blend of atmospheric d'n'b with noisy hardcore drum breaks, and it's that energy and expressiveness SXDSHXWTY brings to the table time after time, their devotion to bringing a uniquely hazy perspective to the breakcore scene yielding absolutely wonderful results. Though short, REJUVENATOR spares no expenses making sure SXDSHXWTY's songs are well put together, cleanly produced, and full of life at every turn. They know what they want to do with their music, and not once is there a moment where it feels like they're unsure of where their bright and bubbly sound is headed, committed to following the framework of the past and slightly bending it with every new drum pattern and looping voice recording until it all becomes one and the same - Bounce Box Deluxe could find its way onto some old PS1 arcade style racer and not sound out of place in the slightest, and being able to perfectly emulate all the different characteristics and quirks of the time is the definitive proof that SXDSHXWTY has the knowledge and skill level to take things to the next level, to not just follow in the footsteps of their influences but find an even more energetic and colorful way to reinterpret them than they already have. REJUVENATOR might not try anything out of the norm, but it doesn't need to: when SXDSHXWTY can pull you into their world and make you fully believe in all its magic, that's all they need to keep you coming back for more.
