When I started my current position, basically all of my immediate coworkers were in the US. Probably over 20 or 30 of us. We added one in Europe to cover that time zone.
Then we got bought out a few years ago and slowly... Now there are me and 2 others in the US (near me), 1 in Canada. 1 in England, the rest in India.
One of the not fun things about that is logging on at 730 am and having a full inbox, and people who still can't figure out how to their job asking to talk on the phone.
#i sound arrogant or whatever there#but ive trained like 5 or 10 people that have come through my job title#they gave the ones in asia the title of senior and i have had to hand hold them more than anyone#I think it's cultural that they'd rather talk on the phone and that's fine#but they also dont take the initiative to explore the data and truly understand what they're doing#even though I've held SO many meetings about all of it and the reporting software we use#tbd#sorry someone thats been here over a year has been working on a report that took me less than two hours to build#that i kept as a backup in case they didn't bet it done before the deadline#and I've walked her through exactly what i did and have made sure she understands and goes on to work by themselves#and then comes back to check with me and it's just completely the wrong direction#and it's every person minus the one in the UK who is great#anyeay i am looking for another job but remote is hard to find#and startint at a different company after 12 years is a scary prospect

hot take: if an office/remote job requires mostly email communication, the interview questions should be written. There should also be a sample email that you have to write a response to, and something that tests your ability to draft an initial email about something related to whatever the job is about.
if you really need telephone skills as well, then there should be a mock call that is similar to the calls you'd have to make on the job, e.g. you are given a document to read beforehand and have to answer some questions about the content of the document on the call. No more of this "tell me about a time when you...." bullshit, just assessing things that are Directly Related To The Job, Please For The Love of God
#job search#is truly hell right now#I'm writing this as both a job seeker and someone who was involved in hiring by the way#this type of interview would be 10 times more effective than a regular interview for every office or remote job I've had#I'm sure if you do coding or something there would be other steps but I still think it should be directly applicable to the daily work#who care about whether you can memorize leetcode just take a couple days to actually make changes to a repository and merge the pull request#also I realize that chatgpt could be an issue for written questions#but we have test taking software that locks down your computer and has the camera on so you can't use your phone#so why not repurpose that for job screening#.....anyway rant over lol I'm just very frustrated#nem speaks

Seeking IT post
Sadly, the contract for @fordprfct has come to an end, and he has to find new work. (although 4 years for what was supposed to be a 1 year contract isn't bad - and they jumped through hoops to keep him when his former contracting company was rejected.) I've seen through his coworkers' reactions, he's VERY good at what he does. Jobhunting is much more unpleasant. He works remotely, and I'm hoping someone might know of an opening for him, so here's what he does. I can tell you, he picks up new software challenges like a cat going after tuna.

Doing a JLPT N1 workbook -- not because I have any plans of taking the exam, I just got worried about forgetting all the Japanese I know -- and of course they'd do this thing where the subchapter introducing particular phrases gives rather typical, predictable examples of their use, but the general comprehension check test has examples where the phrases are used in a way that's just. Weird. >:/
#oh how I missed this part about studying something :''''''')#like if the meaning of kosoare is 'although/despite' (as in 'a nurse's job; although difficult and tiring; is worth doing') then How does i#work in a sentence like 留学生の多くが、程度の違いこそあれ言葉の問題に悩まされているとみえる? the translated sentence is 'to varying degrees'#so there's nothing that even remotely resembles 'despite'!#there's another sentence like 外食したことにしてその分を貯めたとすればかなりの額になるだろう but I can't figure out what is the exact#meaning of that ことにして is ( ˘︹˘ ) FASCINATINGLY#both people and translating softwares online are torn as to what this sentence means. the workbook says 'If you save what you spend on#eating out; it'll come to a considerable amount'. However! I'm also seeing translations that take the ことにして as 'to act as though' and#make it 'If you pretended that you ate out out and saved the money' which is like. Pretended in front of WHOM? What psychological games are#you suggesting here? Is the sentence not about saving the money but rather making yourself believe you're eating fancier than in reality?#I'm sadly lost in the nuance sauce here I'm afraid.#the korean translation is plagued by similar problems. one web translator says one thing while another says another. now the MANDARIN#translation has 当作 which apparently is 'to regard as; to treat as' which is still like. what are we talking about here.#hypothetical hypotheticals? hm. a Japanese person on hinative said it means that you basically don't eat out BUT just think hypothetically#about what the expenses would be if you had WHICH IS JUST. WHAT. W H A T#gaisyokuception.#with the way hinative people are explaining the first sentence it seems the kosoare is about that fact that like... there's a lot of#students and although they're troubled to various degrees they're still troubled by this One thing that unites them? that's too nuanced for#me lads I'm too stupid for that shit. you have to speak plainly to me

Ugh, I really want to finish editing this chapter so I can keep my posting streak going (9 weeks straight!), but my head is so full of work-related information that I am literally buzzing; vibrating at high speed.
Here's hoping that going to bed will help the storage space in my brain and I can work on it tomorrow T_T
#love my new job so far#like. wayyyy more than i've liked any other job i've had.#seems like a great position and a good place to work#however. a coworker is leaving and her position is not one that can be left empty#so in the interim until we find someone to hire... i'll be filling in XD#not what anyone was expecting lmao least of all me#i don't mind especially since they were very clear that i'd be compensated for it#BUT it does mean learning at least two entirely new software programs and about a dozen databases and processes#and that's just the tip of the iceberg; not even mentioning the paperwork side of things#... in two weeks XDD#i have no background/experience in anything remotely related to this position. so it's all brand new info.#at the same time i'm also learning the ropes of my own position#which is far more familiar stuff but still. every workplace does things differently so i still need to figure out the specifics for here#brain is. ON FIRE.#withoutwords

The free trial of clip studio paint is such BULLSHIT man. What the fuck do you mean I can't save any files until I buy it. How am I supposed to trial the goddamn thing if I have to do everything in one sitting. I have never once had a free trial do this shit in my life. Idc how good the program is that's just fucking bullshit dude
#the learning curve for krita is way too fucking massive for me so csp is my only other realistic choice unfortunately#but I wanna get a Good feel for whether or not it's gonna work for me. but I fucking CANT bcuz you cant save anything!!! its so dumb!!!!!!#I'm going to lose my mind.#like. am I nuts for thinking this is a weird thing for them to do. literally none of the free trials of software I've done have done this#also maybe I'm just stupid but their brush engine is kinda wack. I spent like 3 hours trying to make a good lineart brush and still dont-#-have one that's even remotely tolerable#and all of the edges on the brushes are pixelated as FUCK. like everything is so fuckin pixel-y it's so ugly I hate it#everyone says this is a fantastic product so either I'm missing smth or everyone else has lower standards than I do /lh#armchair speaks

Ready to Work?
I’ve been freelancing for many years now and I’ve used a few of these platforms in the past. Here’s a list of all the ones I could find that seemed reputable or I have used in the past.
I recommend going to InterviewBit to prepare for the interviews if you’re going to be working for a company.
How to Write A Cover Letter will help you prepare one. Heaven know it’s been a long time since I’ve had to write one.

Ugh, the job market is so sad right now ;-;
I had a meeting scheduled for later today to chat with an internal recruiter about a position their company is hiring for (and it's a job I'm really interested), but they've just asked to reschedule for Monday. Really hoping that it's a genuine reschedule and not just "we've hired someone else but we're going to give you a little bit of a runaround until it doesn't look bad for us to cancel".
#personal#being a software dev in this day and age is a wild experience lemme tell you#i know every industry is going apeshit right now but software has gone from being the promised land of everything you want in a job#-- high pay. good benefits. remote work. semi-decent company culture and work-life balance --#overflowing with opportunities... to a barren desert full of cutthroat and desperate job seekers#in ye olden days (aka 1.5yrs ago) i had recruiters trying to poach me at least once a week#and i was EMPLOYED. 5ish years ago when i was job hunting i was practically conducting my own interviews with recruiters to find the guy#with the best opportunity. it was INSANE. i wasn't even a senior or skilled dev; i was fresh outta school with 2yrs experience#now im unemployed with 7ish yrs experience. i have so much more to offer in terms of skills and knowledge... and it's been CRICKETS#job postings have hundreds of desperate devs flocking to them per day. the competition has never been uglier. it's wild
