My Harvest of Miracle Seeds
Back in May, I stopped into a local herb shop and bought a little plant called “Black Cumin.” I put this annual in my herb garden and thought nothing of it. Naturally, I assumed this plant was related to cumin the spice which is widely used in Cuban cooking and other cuisines. Just yesterday, I harvested the tiny-shriveled thing which had gone to seed and died. Sadly, I placed this small plant in a place where it didn’t get enough sun or water. We had a 5-week drought/heat wave as well which didn’t help. Even though the plant was dead, I got excited about all the seed pods it produced and set to work on breaking the pods apart.
Upon tasting the seeds, my face lit up. the seeds did not taste anything like the cumin I was used to so I wondered what in the world they were. Enter the internet. In a few minutes, I discovered that the plant called black cumin shares its name with several other culinary herbs, but is really Nigella Sativa. Some of its other names include: Black caraway, fennel flower, nigella, nutmeg flower, Roman coriander, and kalonji (from Hindi-Urdu). Go figure!
First, it tastes delicious. It’s slightly bitter with a peppery taste. If you love fresh ground pepper this is like a tastier substitute. Second, this is a miracle seed.
The Prophet Muhammed said, "Use this black seed. For indeed it contains a cure for every disease except for death!"
What?
I had to learn more!
The seeds of N. sativa and their oil have been widely used for centuries in the treatment of various ailments throughout the world. And it is an important drug in the Indian traditional system of medicine like Unani and Ayurveda and Siddha. In Islamic literature, it is considered one of the greatest forms of healing medicine. It has been recommended for using on regular basis in Tibb-e-Nabwi (Prophetic Medicine). It has been widely used as antihypertensive, liver tonics, diuretics, digestive, anti-diarrheal, appetite stimulant, analgesics, anti-bacterial and in skin disorders. Extensive studies on N. sativa have been carried out by various researchers and a wide spectrum of its pharmacological actions have been explored which may include antidiabetic, anticancer, immunomodulator, analgesic, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, spasmolytic, bronchodilator, hepato-protective, renal protective, gastroprotective, antioxidant properties, etc. Due to its miraculous power of healing, N. sativa has got the place among the top-ranked evidence-based herbal medicines. This is also revealed that most of the therapeutic properties of this plant are due to the presence of thymoquinone which is a major bioactive component of the essential oil.

Kidney beans are a common food crop, and it is known for high nutritional value and as a rich source of protein. Their nutritional value makes them profitable for ‘healthy’ kidneys, but kidney beans may not be beneficial for your kidneys always, especially when you have kidney disease.
The purpose of this video is to tell you how kidney beans can influence the health of your kidneys. To know how kidney beans for kidneys are, watch this video without a skip. Kidney beans, known as ‘rajma’ in Hindi, are considered quite beneficial for your health, including kidneys.
They are rich in essential nutrients like protein, minerals, and vitamin 12. They are low in fats and high in fiber and Carbs. Moreover, kidney beans are a good option for diabetic patients as it helps in controlling blood sugar level, which is one of the significant causes of kidney disease.
Kidney beans are low in cholesterol and fats; therefore, they keep blood pressure in control and prevent fat accumulation. But if you are a kidney patient already, and the function of your kidneys is not at their best, then these beans may not be a good option for you because:- Kidney beans are rich in protein, a 100g of kidney beans contains about 9 grams of protein, and this high protein content can be harmful.
Kidney beans are also a rich source of potassium and magnesium, and none of these electrolytes is suitable for your kidneys. We suggest you prepare a renal diet chart under the guidance of your doctor or dietician. Karma Ayurveda is one of the most renowned kidney care institutions in India. Our natural ways of treatment have beclouded the artificial allopathic temporary solutions. We have had a history of 100% success in the past.

What are the tests to check how well the kidneys are working? Kidneys filter waste from your blood and eliminate them with urine. They also produce hormones that create red blood cells and regulate blood pressure. Along with that, kidneys are also vital to maintain the health of other organs. But, what happens when the kidneys stop working or become diseased? Underneath are the symptoms that indicate your kidneys are not functioning well. Pain while passing urine Frequent urination Smelly urine Blood in urine Swelling in the body Repeated vomiting or fever Pain in the backside Headache A lot of people do not know that they are suffering from kidney disease because they are not facing any symptoms. Yes, in the initial stages of kidney disease, you might not notice any problems in your body. That is the reason why most kidney patients get to know about their condition when they are in the last stage. Several people for their kidney disease prefer to take dialysis, which is not a permanent solution. Yes, in allopathy, no treatment can terminate your kidney disease and rejuvenate the organ. Dialysis is a way to remove accumulated toxins from your body when the kidney is not healthy. Dialysis is not an option to get rid of the disease. On the other hand, renal replacement therapy is to exchange your damaged kidney with a new one. Both allopathic treatments do not guarantee to cure diseased organs. To check your kidney's health, you can go for the following tests and know how well your kidneys are working. eGFR test Kidney function test Biopsy CT scan Watch the video to know more about the topic! Pterocarpus Marsupium for the Treatment of Diabetes and Other Disorders- Juniper Publishers
Tumblr media
Abstract
Pterocarpus marsupium Roxb., is a deciduous tree commonly grows in India and Sri Lanka. It is well known to Ayurvedic medicine because of its curative and lenitive properties. The heartwood extract of P. marsupium is reported to have many pharmacological compounds and used in treatment of various disorders. Literature was collected via electronic search (PubMed, ScienceDirect) from published articles that reports medicinal properties of P. marsupium. A significant research of antidiabetic activities and other medicinal properties of P. marsupium combined with bioactive compounds isolated from the plant will provide leads for the discovery of new drugs for the management of many disorders with minimal side effects.
Keywords: Pterocarpus marsupium; Vijayasar; Anti-diabetic; Antioxidant
Introduction
Diabetes is a chronic disorder of carbohydrate, fat and protein metabolism characterized by increased fasting and post prandial blood sugar levels. The increasing worldwide incidence of diabetes mellitus in adults constitutes a global public health burden. Out of the two types of diabetes, the incidence of non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus is much higher than the insulin dependent diabetes mellitus. Even insulin therapy does not reinstate a permanent normal pattern of glucose homeostasis and carries an increased risk of atherogenesis and hypoglycemia. Plants are used as traditional remedies in one or other form for the treatment of diabetes. There has been an exponential growth in the field of herbal medicine and these drugs are gaining popularity both in developing and developed countries because of their natural origin and less side effects. Drugs derived from natural products have played a major role in the development of pharmaceutical treatments for diabetes.Pterocarpus marsupium Roxb., is a deciduous tree commonly grows in Sri Lanka and India [1]. It is popularly known as Vijaysar in Hindi and is a valuable medicinal plant, used mainly in Ayurveda, for the treatment of diabetes [2–4]. It is well known to Ayurvedic medicine because of its curative and lenitive properties. Its flowers are employed against fever, its heartwood as depurative, hemostatic, and rejuvenating, its wood is used for chest and body pain as well as indigestion, etc. The gum (kino) obtained from the tree is used in diarrhea, pyrosis and toothache. Bruised leaves are used externally for boils, sores, and various skin diseases. The water kept in tumblers made out of the wood of this plant is said to be beneficial for chest pain and diabetes. The bark of P. marsupiumis very effective in preventing cataract formation and reducing hyperglycemia in alloxanized diabetic rats [1] and the heartwood is useful as hypolglycemic agents [5].
Methodology
A systematic search was carried out in Pub Med, Scopus and Web of Sciences using a combination of Boolean operators. Peer reviewed papers in English on the keyword Pterocarpus marsupium were retrieved and evaluated based on titles and abstracts. The retrieved papers were managed using Mendeley and the data were consolidated.
Anti-diabetic activity
Aqueous extract of heartwood of Pterocarpus marsupium was given orally to alloxan induced type-2 diabetic rabbit model (Pradhan et al., 2017). Both the fasting blood glucose (194.8±12.7 vs. 155.2±16.3) and postprandial blood glucose (191.6±23.2 vs. 149.2±14.5) were decreased indicating the hypoglycaemic effect of P. marsupium. Incubation of red blood cells with glucose in the presence of alcoholic extract of P. marsupium under high glucose conditions lead to reduction in the accumulation of intracellular sorbitol in a dose dependent manner. There was 50% reduction of sorbitol accumulation with alcoholic extract of was observed with IC50 151.00μg/ml and 105.12μg/ml for ascorbic acid [6]. Ethanolic extract of P. marsupium heartwood have antihyperglycemic activity in streptozotocin treated diabetic rats [7]. At 100 mg/kg dose levels, fasting blood glucose, oral glucose tolerance and serum insulin levels were recorded as 113±3.40mg/dl, 35930±102.9AUC and 160±31.3ng/l respectively. Blood glucose lowering effect of P. marsupium heartwood was also reported. Antidiabetic activity of P. marsupium Roxb. heartwood in alloxan induced diabetic rats using extracts obtained by optimized conventional and non-conventional extraction methods was evaluated by Devgan et al. [8]. Ultrasound-assisted extraction was proved to enhance the antidiabetic activity of P. marsupium. Mohan Kumar et al. [9] reported that the exposure of mouse pancreatic and muscle tissues to P. marsupium extract stimulated the insulin secretion and glucose uptake, respectively, in a concentration-dependent manner. Gairola et al. [10] found that the aqueous extract significantly reduces type 2 diabetes in rats and can prevent hyperinsulinemia and hypertriglyceridemia. Aqueous extract of P. marsupium has significantly decreased the fasting blood glucose (182.5±4.1mg/dL) in type 2 diabetic rat. It also decreased the postprandial hyperglycemia significantly (112.3±2.8mg/dL) as compared to diabetic control group (301.4±5mg/dL). P.marsupium modulated the inflammatory cytokine TNF-α in type 2 diabetic rats [11]. Dhanabal et al. [12] studied the antidiabetic activity of various subfractions of the alcohol extract of the bark of Pterocarpus marsupium Roxb. in alloxan-induced diabetic rats. The butanol subfraction of the alcohol extract of P. marsupium exhibits significant antidiabetic activity and corrects the metabolic alterations in diabetic rats. Mukhtar et al. [13] reported the hypoglycemic activity of P. marsupium wood at an oral dose of 250mg/kg in alloxan induced diabetic rats. The aqueous extract of P. marsupium significantly (P<0.001) reduced the blood sugar levels from 72.32±5.62 to 61.35±1.2mg% 2 h after oral administration of the extract and also significantly lowered the blood glucose in alloxan diabetic rats from 202.91±5.44 to 85.22±11.28mg% 21 days after daily oral administration of the extract [14]. Alloxan-diabetic rats fed with the ethanolic extract of P. marsupium wood for 5 days resulted in a significant lowering of fasting blood sugar level. There was a 5-fold increase in blood glucose level of alloxan to rats after injection compared to normal controls and feeding of the extract to alloxan-diabetic animals lowered the blood sugar by 70% as compared to the alloxan-diabetic controls [15].
Antioxidant activity
Many recent studies reveal that antioxidants capable of neutralizing free radicals are effective in preventing experimentally induced diabetes in animal models. In DPPH scavenging activity and ABTS∙+ scavenging activity, IC50 values were found to be 138.3, 12.4, 13.5 and 47.8, 3.9, 4.2μg/mL for aqueous, methanolic extract of P. marsupium and standard ascorbic acid respectively. In α-amylase inhibition assay and α-glucosidase inhibition assay, IC50 values for standard Acarbose, aqueous and methanolic extract of heartwood were 44.09, 166.72, 48.20 and 45.17, 172.32, 48.12 respectively [16]. The effects of different fractions of heart wood of Pterocarpus marsupium on antioxidant enzyme like protein thiols and the efficacy of the extract for the protection of the renal function in alloxan induced diabetic rats was evaluated by Bhata, Nayak [17]. P. marsupium extract showed a promising antioxidant effect, as well as hypoglycemic activity. Aqueous extract of P. marsupium showed high antioxidant activity in all different assays used and also protected mitochondria against oxidative damage. It significantly reduced lactate dehydrogenase release along with reduction of lipid peroxidation [18]. The herbal extract mixture of P. marsupium and O. sanctum has succeeded in not only rectifying dyslipidemia but also in restoring the endogenous antioxidant levels to the pre-diabetic status in non-diabetic and alloxan induced diabetic adult female Wistar rats [19].
Reproductive effects
Hugar et al. [23] has reported that Pterocarpus marsupium showed potential reproductive effects on testosterone propionate induced Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) female albino rats and could be used as an alternative therapy in the treatment of PCOS.
Activity against cataract
The protective effect of Pterocarpus marsupium bark extracts against cataract in streptozotocin-induced diabetic male albino rats was investigated by Xu et al. [24]. The blood glucose was reduced up to 36% following treatment with bark extracts. The blood insulin and tissue GSH contents were substantially increased more than 100% in diabetic rats following treatment with extracts. Aldose reductase activity was reduced up to 79.3% in diabetic rats following treatment with extracts. he findings concluded that the use of P. marsupium bark extracts could be the potential therapeutic approach for the reduction of aldose reductase against diabetic cataract.
Conclusion
Major hindrance in amalgamation of herbal medicine in modern medical practices is lack of scientific and clinical data proving their efficacy and safety. This review article showed the anti-diabetic potential of a P. Marsupium for the management of hyperglycemia, along with good antioxidant activity. However limited data were available about the collective pharmaceutical property of P. Marsupium. This plant may provide leads for the discovery of new drugs for the management of many disorders with minimal side effects.

Santiago RHU offers various free medical services amid COVID-19
#PHinfo: Santiago RHU offers various free medical services amid COVID-19
SANTIAGO, Ilocos Sur, Dec. 6 (PIA) - The Rural Health Unit (RHU) in this municipality offers various free medical services to its residents amid the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.
In an interview, Municipal Health Officer Dr. Vida G. Berto said that along with their fight against COVID-19, the local government unit (LGU) of Santiago continues to conduct various programs benefitting its residents especially those who are susceptible to diseases.
On November 27, at least 85 expectant mothers and 29 puerpera (newborn mothers) received free hygiene kits and one dozen of eggs each as part of the Municipal Nutrition Action Council’s Maternal and Child Healthcare Program to ensure the health of the mother and their child during and after pregnancy.
Dr. Berto said that eggs are vital for pregnant women as these contain 90 calories and more than 12 vitamins and minerals and are also rich in protein and choline.
“Mahalaga ang mga sustansiyang ito sa birth development ng bata sa sinapupunan ng ina dahil ang hindi sapat na intake ng choline ay maaaring magdulot ng depekto sa bata at sa utak nito,” she said.
Aside from this, the RHU also implemented its second wave of the Garantisadong Pambata Program this year wherein they distributed free Vitamin A supplementation and hygiene kits and conducted deworming activity to 340 Day Care children ages zero to five years old.
“Tinuturuan din natin sila ng proper way of brushing their teeth,” Dr. Berto added.
Recently, the RHU conducted its last wave of blood donation for this year wherein they collected a total of 105 blood bags.
During the Tuberculosis (TB) Caravan last November, the RHU had X-rayed 38 asymptomatic patients and three of them tested positive for TB, six of pneumonia and two for cardiomegaly – those with enlarged hearts.
“Iyong tatlong TB patients, agad nating sinimulan ang kanilang six-month tutok gamutan,” she said.
At least 400 patients also underwent free urinalysis under the RHU’s Renal Disease Control Program.
Under the Kilatis Kutis Campaign, the RHU, with the support of the Provincial Health Office, conducted free consultations to all residents and distributed free germicidal soaps, medicines, and ointment.
Dr. Berto also invited Santiago residents to join their online zumba contest which aims to raise awareness on having a healthy and fit body.
“Isa lang ito sa mga programs namin under healthy lifestyle kasi kahit may pandemic, kailangan nating gumalaw-galaw dahil nakatutulong itong mapanatili ang malusog na pangangatawan. At kung malusog ang pangangatawan, mas may laban tayo sa COVID-19,” she said.
On COVID-19 update, to date, Santiago has no active case but had recorded three confirmed cases last month.
For returning residents, returning overseas Filipinos, and locally stranded individuals, the LGU requires them to undergo 14-day quarantine in the designated municipal and barangay quarantine facilities.
“The LGU offers free food, conducts disinfection and monitoring of signs and symptoms of the persons in quarantine twice a day, and free RT-PCR testing on the 7th to 10th day of their quarantine,” she said.
She assured that the LGU shoulders the RT-PCR testing especially if they are PhilHealth members but if they’re not, the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office assess them and provide necessary aid they need.
“Tuwing lalabas outside of residence, we must always observe minimum public health standards such as wearing of face mask and face shield, maintaining physical distancing, and practicing proper hygiene through handwashing or use of hand sanitizer,” she said.

What Causes Excessive Thirst in Diabetes?
Excessive thirst, also known as polydipsia can stem from multiple factors like consumption of surplus amount of salt, taking medications which tend to dry out the mouth, and so on. Thirst can also be closely associated with diabetes. During the early developmental phase of diabetes, it is hard to detect its presence without proper testing procedures. However, this disease gets complicated with time and leads to various issues and overall deterioration of the body. Thirst is one among the common symptoms of diabetes. Before we get to the part where you know what causes excessive thirst in diabetes, let us first understand what diabetes is.
What is diabetes?
Now, diabetes can be termed as a disease or ailment that tends occur when the blood glucose or blood sugar level is deemed too high when compared to normal concentration. Glucose in the blood serves as the prime source for energy and can be found in the food one consumes. This blood sugar is regulated by insulin, which is a hormone produced by our pancreas. At times, the body fails to make enough or fails to use the hormone produced in a proper way. This leads to enhanced blood sugar content and eventually diabetes.
Types of Diabetes
There are three common form of diabetes which includes:
Type-1 Diabetes:
Type-1 diabetes is when your body fails to produce enough insulin to control the blood sugar content.
Type-2 Diabetes:
Type-2 diabetes is when the body fails to make or properly use the insulin produced by pancreas. It is among the highly common form of diabetes.
Gestational Diabetes:
Gestational diabetes is when women develop diabetes while they are with child. Mostly, it goes away post birth but increases the risk of developing type-2 diabetes later as you age.
Causes of Diabetes in India
Diabetes is something that needs timely detection along with right set of disease management protocols. However, India is a developing country that lacks proper facilities for timely detection of the disease. To add to that, most of the residents are unaware of the disease as it eats them away from inside out. Indians today are struggling with daily routine management and inclining more towards fast food joints with long office hours. Lack of exercise and unhealthy food is what has contributed to the rising numbers of diabetics in India.
Symptoms of Diabetes
Diabetes is a slowly progressing degenerative disease that doesn’t show noticeable symptoms at the very beginning. However, being prompt and regular checkups can help with timely detection of the disease with chance to manage before conditions get worse.
Common noted symptoms of Diabetes include:
Frequent Urination
Increased Hunger
Enhanced Thirst
Recurrent infections
Stroke
Heart Diseases
Foot Ulcers
Chronic Renal Failure
Eye Damage
Gangrene
Coma (worst-case scenario)
What causes excessive thirst in diabetes?
Also termed as Cotton Mouth, excessive mouth dryness or thirst is among the earliest noted symptoms of diabetes. This is because glucose becomes deeply concentrated in the bloodstream and the kidney slowly starts losing the ability to uptake the glucose from consumed water. Due to the high build up of osmotic pressure, the body tends to develop highly concentrated blood stream that requires to be diluted and hence the thirst.
Thirst might not seem like a big deal at first but with time it can lead to serious dehydration and can turn incredibly serious. Immediate consequences of dehydration stemming from diabetes include nausea, fainting, dizziness, and headaches.
What if Diabetes is uncontrolled?
Diabetes, as soon as detected, should be controlled to ensure that everything goes well with the patient and he/she can lead a better lifestyle. However, at times, people do not take this issue seriously tend to expose themselves to ailments that develop later in life such as:
Eyes (Cataracts, Glaucoma, Diabetic Retinopathy)
Heart & Blood Vessels Damage (Heart Attack, Cardiac Arrest)
Kidney Failure/Infection
Peripheral Diabetic Neuropathy/autonomic neuropathy
Gum diseases
Until and unless you take charge of your deteriorating health, you cannot lead a happy and pain-free life.

In addition to all the signs and symptoms mentioned under category A, if a patient has high-grade fever and severe sore throat, he or she may require home isolation and Oseltamivir.
