Terry Jo Duperrault, immediately before her rescue by the Captain Theo

The Bluebelle was a 60-foot (18 m) ketch that was the site of five brutal murders on November 12, 1961.

The ship was chartered by optometrist Dr. Arthur Duperrault (41 years of age) of Green Bay, Wisconsin, for a trip from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to the Bahamas, departing on November 8, 1961. Accompanying him were his wife Jean (38), and his three children, Brian (14), Terry Jo (11), and Renee (7). The ship was skippered by decorated World War II and Korean War pilot Julian Harvey (44), accompanied by his sixth wife, Mary Dene (34), whom he had married in July.

Late one night on the return voyage, Harvey allegedly killed his wife, Dr. and Mrs. Duperrault, and two of the children, Brian and Renee. Terry Jo was awakened by screams, and Harvey ordered her to stay below. He then scuttled the vessel and prepared to leave in a dinghy. Terry Jo was able to untie a 2' × 5’ (0.6 × 1.5 m) cork float and launch herself onto it just as the ship sank. She drifted for four days without food or water, and was near death when rescued in the Northwest Providence Channel by the Greek freighter Captain Theo. A picture taken of her by a crewman appeared on front pages around the world with stories of the “sea waif”.

Harvey had been picked up three days earlier in the dinghy along with the dead body of Renee. He told United States Coast Guard investigators that a squall had brought down the Bluebelle’s masts, holing the ship’s hull, rupturing the auxiliary gas tank, and starting a fire. He claimed he had found Renee floating in the water and tried unsuccessfully to revive her. (An autopsy showed that she had died of drowning.) However, after Harvey was informed of Terry Jo’s rescue, he checked into a motel under an assumed name and committed suicide with a razor blade.

It is believed Harvey planned to kill his wife to collect on her $20,000 double indemnity insurance policy, but he was observed by Dr. Duperrault, and then had to kill him and his family who may have witnessed his murder. It was later found that Harvey had survived a car accident that claimed another of his six wives and her mother, and that his yacht Torbatross and his powerboat Valiant had sunk under suspicious circumstances, yielding large insurance settlements.

Mystery writer Erle Stanley Gardner, among others, wondered why Harvey did not kill Terry Jo. Gardner speculated that Harvey may have wanted to be caught and punished. Survival psychologist Richard Logan theorised that Harvey had intended to kill her, but when she accidentally dropped the rope connected to his dinghy, he was forced to dive overboard in order to prevent it floating away without him, and thus left her alive on the sinking ship. Many years later, she stated in a television interview with Matt Lauer, “I think he probably thought I would go down with the ship.”

Sie sagte „Beschimpfungen wie 'Auf die Fresse, Politesse' gehören leider zu unserem Joballtag“ Trotzdem ist die 37-Jährige überzeugt, dass die bestehenden Gesetze ausreichten, wenn Richter den Strafrahmen voll ausnützen würden.

Nick Hein war elf Jahre lang als Bundespolizist auch am Kölner Hauptbahnhof im Einsatz und beklagte den mangelnden Rückhalt der Gesellschaft für Polizisten. „Viele Kollegen trauen sich nicht mehr, ihre Arbeit frei auszuführen, da man ihnen sofort mit einem Disziplinarverfahren droht“, erzählt der 32-Jährige.

Der Vorsitzender der Deutschen Polizeigewerkschaft Rainer Wendt  beklagte Respektlosigkeit und zunehmende Gewalt gegenüber Polizisten: „Die Attacken gehen bis hin zum gefährlichen Einsatz von Steinen, Flaschen und Metallstangen. Die Hemmschwelle nimmt immer stärker ab.“ Der Gewerkschaftschef kritisierte auch fehlende Anerkennung von Seiten der Politik und eine zu lasche Justiz.

Thomas Fischer verteidigte als Vorsitzender Richter am Bundesgerichtshof die deutsche Justiz gegen den Vorwurf mangelnder Härte. So sei das Strafniveau, also die durchschnittliche Strafhöhe, in den vergangenen 20 Jahren, um mindestens ein Drittel gestiegen, konstatierte er.

Ob Polizisten tatsächlich tagtäglich ausbaden, was Politiker wie Christoph Lauer und Richter wie Thomas Fischer versäumen, konnte in der Sendung allerdings niemand beantworten. Stattdessen ging es wie so oft um Details aus dem Arbeitsleben der Gäste, die zwar einen Eindruck geben, jedoch nicht objektiv sind. Das eigentlich sachliche Thema wurde immer emotionaler und gipfelte schließlich in dem Vorwurf, dass der raue Umgangston gegenüber Polizisten vielleicht nur herbeigeredet wird.

2. Der Bachelor (RTL): Er ist wieder da

Es ist wieder so weit. Die Mittwochabende sind gerettet und der Glaube an die gaaanz große Liebe gleich mit: Der Bachelor ist zurück.

Ein Mann, ein Haufen Rosen und 22 blonde Frauen, deren IQ vom RTL-Schnittteam gleich nochmal um die Hälfte reduziert wird. Sie kennen das Konzept. Gestern Abend startete die siebte Staffel des RTL Kuppel-Formats: Der Bachelor ist wieder da. Diesmal mit viel Drama und viel nackter Haut in Miami. Rrrrr.

„Ladys aufgepasst“, „So heiß ist der neue Bachelor“. Promi-Portale sind in Aufruhr und 22 Frauenherzen noch viel mehr. Denn Bachelor Sebastian Pannek ist schon ein echtes Sahnestückchen. Braune Haare, blaue Augen, bisschen lispeln – welcher Dame zittern da nicht die Knie? Die Kandidatinnen überschlagen sich förmlich nach dem ersten Eindruck. „Der ist soo goldig.“ „Totaaal nett.“ „Der hat so schöne Zähne!“ und dann erst „diese Funkelaugen!“ „Total amazing.“ Alle direkt verliebt. Und warum ist so ein Traummann noch Single?

3. Das erste Mal Vater! (RTL II): Warum Männer nicht schwanger werden

In „Das erste Mal Vater!“ werden junge Männer bei ihren ersten Schritten in das Familiendasein begleitet. Zum Auftakt der neuen Serie geht es um den 21-jährigen Rene.

Der Einzelhandelskaufmann kennt seine vier Jahre ältere Freundin Deliah erst seit einem Jahr, die Nachricht, dass er Vater wird, kam für ihn überraschend. Insbesondere, weil die 25-jährige Deliah bereits eine dreijährige Tochter hat.

Trotzdem tut Rene viel dafür ein guter Vater zu werden, doch zunächst muss er die Geburt überstehen ohne dabei ohnmächtig zu werden. Schon das ist schwieriger als gedacht, denn der 21-Jährige kann kein Blut sehen. Doch für seine Tochter braucht es einen Kaiserschnitt.

4. China – Ein Milliardenvolk will reisen (3Sat): Die Touristen von morgen

Das rasant steigende Maß an Wohlstand in den letzten Jahrzenten hat viele Chinesen zu begeisterten Touristen gemacht. Das merkt man vor allem an den Reisezielen, die den Chinesen geografisch naheliegen.

Etwa das moderne Skigebiet Chongli, vier Autostunden von Peking entfernt. Oder auf der Tropeninsel Hainan, viereinhalb Flugstunden südlich von Peking. Die spitze des Eisbergs bildet allerdings Hongkong, das mit 35 Millionen Besuchern im Jahr meistbesuchte Ziel chinesischer Touristen.  Der Film zeigt so eindrucksvoll auf, was passiert, wenn ein Milliardenvolk in den Urlaub geht. – Und was das für die neuen Touristenziele bedeutet.

5. 15 Dinge, die Sie über Hunde wissen müssen (Sat1): Warum jeder einen Hund braucht

In „15 Dinge, die Sie über Hunde wissen müssen“ geht es natürlich um des Deutschen liebstes Hobby. Denn rund 9 Millionen Bundesbürger besitzen einen oder mehrere Hunde und sie geben viel Geld für ihre Lieblinge aus. Allein 2014 verbuchte die Industrie einen Umsatz von 4,6 Milliarden Euro.

In „15 Dinge, die Sie über Hunde wissen müssen“ bekommt man Antworten auf Fragen, die man vielleicht nicht gestellt hat. Bei Punkten wie „haben Männer mit Hund bessere Flirtchancen?“ schaut man aber natürlich trotzdem weiter. Manch einer kommt sogar auf die Idee, sich einen Hund zuzulegen.

Lieutenant governor candidates speak out in Hilo

One candidate wants to cut government bureaucracy. Several touted their experience in state government. Another calls herself a democratic socialist. And another wants to repeal taxes.

There are a lot of choices in the race for lieutenant governor, and on Monday evening five Democrats, two Republicans and one Green Party candidate tried to stand out from the crowded ballot during a forum in Hilo sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Hawaii County.

There were few surprises during the 90-minute forum that had the large group answering questions from moderator Sherry Bracken in rapid-fire succession.

When it came to a question about how to handle the current lava crisis in Puna, the three state legislators seeking the lieutenant governorship were in agreement about the need for a special session and more state money for housing those displaced in the emergency. Candidates suggested using vacation rentals and foreclosed homes as temporary housing in addition to rapid construction of tiny homes.

Even the less-government Republicans agreed this was a time when the government should step in and provide core services.

Of the Democrats on their priorities:

Kauai Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. touted his years as mayor and “boots on the ground” experience as important for the job of lieutenant governor. Carvalho said experience as an administrator is different from legislative experience, saying that experience sets him apart from other candidates.

Oahu state Sen. Will Espero pledged to be active and engaged, visiting every public school in his first two years in office, if elected. He’s also pushing for affordable housing.

“I want to be the housing czar for the next administration,” Espero said. “I want to implement the bills that we have passed.”

Kona state Sen. Josh Green, a physician, said he’s best prepared to deal with homelessness and the drug addiction epidemic plaguing the state.

“I intend to take ownership of the homeless crisis,” Green said, adding that getting roofs over people’s heads is the first step in getting a handle on high Medicaid costs.

Oahu state Sen. Jill Tokuda said she’s concerned families are being priced out of paradise. This affects younger residents and especially teachers, she said.

“We have to … run government as we all do at our kitchen table,” Tokuda said.

Former Civil Rights Commission and state School Board member Kim Coco Iwamoto, the self-proclaimed democratic socialist, said corporations get too many tax breaks, which is making the state too poor to fund important programs such as education.

“The Legislature has been basically toeing the line of corporate interests,” Iwamoto said. “We need someone here who is going to represent the public.”

On the Republican primary ballot:

Oahu shipping business owner Marissa Dipasupil Kerns is all for repealing taxes.

“Working with the Legislature and the governor,” Kerns said, “we need to repeal these taxes these guys are creating. … it has to be across the board. … We’re getting tired of these taxes. … I will fight for you. ”

Government research analyst Jeremy Low said the office of the lieutenant governor is underused. He would serve as an unofficial inspector general to rout out problems, he said.

“There’s so much bureaucracy in state government, so much waste and fraud,” Low said. “We need to vote for people who have different ways of thinking.”

Former longtime Honolulu city employee Renee Ing is running on the Green Party ticket. She said affordable housing should be built on state land.

“If you build on public land, that should be affordable forever,” Ing said. “And it should stay affordable. Don’t slap the public in the face and say, ‘no you can’t have it anymore,’ after 15 years.”

The candidate with the most votes on their partisan ticket in the Aug. 11 primary will advance to the Nov. 6 general election.

Lieutenant governors in Hawaii have little actual power; although, they do become acting governor when the governor is away from the state or unable to perform duties. The lieutenant governor also is the de facto secretary of state, granting name changes, certifying documents for travel abroad, processing land transfers between state agencies and serving as a repository for various official documents.

But the real appeal of the office — it’s seen as a stepping-stone to the governorship or other higher office. Three of the 13 lieutenant governors in state history went on to become governor: George Ariyoshi, Ben Cayetano and John D. Waihee III. U.S. Sens. Mazie Hirono and Brian Schatz also served as lieutenant governors.

Nonpartisan candidates Ernest G. Magaoay and Paul F. Robotti will appear on the general election ballot and weren’t part of the forum. Republican Steve Lipscomb could not attend the event.

6 Bubbles To Toast Your Wedding (From Fancy Champagne To Affordable Prosecco)

You’re engaged! You must now celebrate the occasion in the appropriate way: With a party, a toast, and some bubbles.

Choosing bad Champagne for your toast is literally the easiest way to put a bad taste in the mouths of all your wedding guests, simultaneously. So, don’t. Picking the right stuff can be easy if you give up the two old stereotypes of ‘good toast taste.’ They are these:

(1)  Good wine = Expensive wine

(2)  Good wine = Champagne

Yes, some expensive wines are good wines (perhaps many), and yes, some Champagnes are good wine (perhaps very many), but there are more important factors you need to pay attention to. For instance: taste? Remember?

If not all Champagne is good, and not all expensive wine is good, how are you supposed to choose the sparkling wine that’s right for one of your life’s biggest ovations? Don’t forget, choosing the right stuff is as big a necessity as the ritual itself. The only thing your wine-snob friends will find more distasteful than tasteless bubbles are no bubbles at all. And what the heck is Prosecco, anyway? Cava?

In brief, there are 6 major names for sparkling wine that either pick out the place they are from, how they are made, or both. They are Champagne, Crémant, Prosecco, Cava, Pétillant-naturel (Pét-Nat) and Sparkling Wine.

Champagne is a region in France that is famous for inventing and producing some incredible examples of sparkling wine. Crémant is French (or Luxembourgish) sparkling wine that is made like Champagne, but not made physically in Champagne. Prosecco is sparkling wine made in Italy. Cava is sparkling wine made in Spain. Pétillant-naturel is a style of making sparkling wine that is slightly different than the traditional Champenoise method. Sparkling wine is everything else that sparkles (and is wine).

There are examples of all of these that are perfect for your engagement party or wedding, so let’s look a little closer at each and pick out pros and cons.

Champagne

Champagne denotes a region but also a traditional style of winemaking that makes for the emblematic product we all know and love. It’s the mainstay, the standard, the Platonic ideal, and the boilerplate. It can sometimes be the very best wine, but too often its steep price is derived from its label and not the way it tastes, i.e. bad. Still, there are very good Champagnes that are not exorbitant in price, and if you have the budget, there is no classier way to treat your guests.

Typically, Champagne is a blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier. Sometimes it’s all Chardonnay (called Blanc de Blanc). Sometimes it’s all Pinot Noir (Blanc de Noir). Very rarely it is all Meunier (no fancy name). Those are names to look for if you’re partial to these grapes.

If you care about how sweet or dry you like your wine, Champagne is almost always finished off with a little liquid sugar called dosage. Essentially, the less dosage, the drier the wine. All Champagne tells you on the bottle the level of dosage. Brut Nature Champagne sees the smallest amount, or in some cases none at all. Next comes Extra Brut, Brut, Extra Dry, Dry, Demi-Sec, and Doux – all in increasing levels of sweetness. Most of the Champagne you get from the local liquor store, gallery opening, or house party will fall somewhere between Extra Brut and Brut.

My favorite Champagnes are natural “grower Champagnes” where grapes are grown by the vignerons themselves (not common) and made organically and sustainably. Vouette et Sorbee make some incredible wines for a lot cheaper than top grower Champagnes like Jacques Sellose, or Agrapart & Fils, any of which will melt your face off.

If you’re not in the market for expensive Champagne ($80 and up), then you’ll be happy to know that other sparkling categories (listed below) that offer delicious wines that will far exceed the quality of $60 Veuve Clicqout or similar “big house” Champagnes, for a third of the price.

Crémant

For instance, wine made exactly like Champagne, that isn’t Champagne, from other fantastic terroirs. Sparkling wine is made in all your favorite regions of France: Burgundy, Loire, Bordeaux, Alsace, and even Provence.

The thing to know about Crémant, is that local varieties will often be thrown into the typical Champenoise blend. Menu Pineau, Folle Blanche, Chenin Blanc, Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc are all eligible, depending on the place of origin. So if you have a connection to another French variety besides the trinity of Champagne grapes, there is likely a Crémant for you.

Domaine Valentin Zusslin produces a number of excellent Crémants from blends of Riesling, Auxerrois and other rare, white varieties. They are also organic, biodynamic and never add sulfur to their wines. Best of all, they are half the price of any entry level Champagne, despite greater complexity, uniqueness – and frankly – taste.

Other great Crémant come from Domaine Cyrill Sevin (who also works without sulfur), and a personal favorite, Jo Landron’s “Atmophères Brut” is a value beyond compare.

Prosecco

It isn’t all about French wine. Prosecco is now the world’s most consumed sparkling wine. And it’s no surprise given the quality and the tiny price points. Most of your guests have garnered a taste for Prosecco and will be more than happy to revisit their favorite brunch guest to celebrate your engagement.

Still, Prosecco is a little different from Champagne or Crémant. Prosecco is made in the Veneto district of Italy, from a grape called, Glera. This is a few miles north of Venice, around the city of Treviso. Instead of the Champenoise method, Prosecco is made with a much simpler method known as the “tank method.” The result is a creamier texture, larger bubbles, and lower acidity (making it the perfect accompaniment for the citric bite of some orange juice).

Easy, quaffable Prosecco abounds, but there are some producers making truly great Prosecco. Check out some wines from Bisson for some mindblowing examples.

Cava

The only sparkling wine that’s going to give Prosecco any competition at the cash register is Cava, the sparkling wine of Spain. You’ve probably had a lot more Cava than you think for exactly this reason. If you’re ordering sparkling wine by the glass for less than $10, it’s very likely Prosecco or Cava, the latter of which is gaining popularity at the rate Prosecco was only a few years ago.

That’s because these wines are pretty good, and unlike Prosecco, they are made in the traditional Champagnoise style. The difference comes down to grape and Terroir. The blend is typically Macabeu, Parellada, and Xarel·lo. Other grapes like Grenache, Chardonnay and Pinot make the blend as well. Cava can legally come from anywhere in Spain, but the most famous houses are in the Northeast, near Barcelona.

My favorite Cava producer, by far, is Recaredo Mata Casanovas in Catalonia. This is another natural winemaker known for long aging, rich, beautiful cava. However, like Prosecco, very fine examples abound at minuscule price points.

Pétillant-naturel (Pét-Nat)

Pét-Nat is a whole different story. Pétillant-naturel means naturally sparkling. It is a method of winemaking that predates the Champagne method but has recently had a resurgence due to the popularity of the natural wine movement.

Where a second fermentation is initiated in the Champagne method, Pét-Nats finish their fermentation in the bottle, most often with the yeasts and sediment along with the juice. The wines are thus cloudy, lower in alcohol, funky, and alive.

Pét-Nats are made everywhere, from Sicily to Long Island, but the most famous examples come from France. Rene and Agnes Mosse make a very hip example called, “Moussamoussettes” made from Gamay and Cabernet Franc. It is almost as delicious as it is fun to say. If your engagement party looks to be a more casual affair, then a wine like this one is the perfect way to dial down the bougie Champagne boozing for a wine that will not only sing in a solo cup, but impress the wine snobs as well.

Other killer examples come from Weingut Strohmeier, and Porto del Vento.

Sparkling Wine

As for the “Other” category, there are some potential winners that fall outside our big categories. The most egregious omission is Sekt, the German sparkling wine. This is not for lack of quality, but more for lack of availability. Peter Lauer produces some incredible examples of sparkling Riesling that can sometimes be found in the states, as well as Hofgut Falkenstein.

Then there is “New World” Sparkling wine that you very often see domestic examples of. Unfortunately, many domestic sparkling wines of quality come with a premium. The one example that proves the rule is from the Gruet Winery in New Mexico. They make a number of excellent sparkling wines for ridiculously cheap. Their reputation in the wine world is none-too-shabby either, making it a perfectly respectable budget option for an engagement party of any level of sophistication.

  In the end, it’s hard to go wrong if you spend a little time tasting – trusting your palate rather than the label or the price point. And what better time than now to branch out with your betrothed and see what these different methods and regions have to offer.
