My blog runs on a queue. I will often like posts and then schedule them to be reblogged later; if you see me reblog something, that doesn't mean I'm online. This one is a bit tougher. I have about a dozen works in progress that I do really want to finish, but it often takes me a long time to get to them. One of my fics took me two years, and it was one chapter. So... It's the same answer as art. You can ask, but I can't promise anything.

I don't know why people think I'm a Big Popular Blog, but I'm not. So... No. You probably won't get any additional reach from me. I keep my "following" list very small, on purpose, so if I really love what you're putting out there, I'll follow or reblog. Please don't ask me this if you're a minor.

Will you read my fanfic?

...Probably not. When I read fic I spend the entire time thinking about how I would rather be writing. However, if we are mutuals, feel free to ask me for proofreading/editing/beta-ing services.

I have an account on Aethy. Should I stay on there, or leave it and move to another instance? Is this discourse justified or is it just a few people complaining about the rules?

You should absolutely stay! The main people who were causing issues have left and/or have been banned. Explanation of the situation under the cut.

Essentially, it started because one or two people were reposting other people's artwork from other websites without permission. Aethy explicitly has rules against this that I guess they didn't read, and they got upset that this rule was enforced.

One of the users involved then went on a tirade that basically equated artists who don't allow reposts to the likes of Disney in terms of abusing copyright, so even though that user claimed they reposted without permission because they couldn't get permission, it's clear that permission isn't actually a factor to them in the first place and they assume that asking would (or should) result in a "yes".

Then someone said the rule wasn't clear enough and should be elaborated on, when "don't repost art that isn't yours without permission" is pretty clear. They got aggressive and claimed that Aethy is making "secret rules" when they wouldn't get an answer (that they wanted). Meanwhile, Aethy IS elaborating on this rule to users who aren't acting like entitled assholes. They just aren't humoring people who are cursing them out (and they shouldn't).

If I saw someone acting like this, I wouldn't want them on MY website either.

People involved basically started harassing Aethy staff, sending them aggressive emails cursing them out (by their own admission), calling them cunts, and daring to call that "how adults talk to adults".

The only reason there's active discourse over this is because it seems to have just happened + the individuals involved are super loud about this and are equating being told to stop being aggressive over a clear "don't steal art" rule to "censorship" and the Hayes Code.

Aethy most certainly does not censor art (that you have the rights/permission to post), and they have been very good at communicating with the userbase and are open to questions about their rules.

They just aren't going to entertain people who are acting the way these people are acting, and that's what has these folks upset. Staff doesn't have to tolerate being called "cunts" or "stupid" or "idiots" just because someone couldn't handle being told "no" on one of the most anything-goes websites on the Internet.

Aethy is a fantastic instance with the most permissive rules on creative expression of any website, with an active mod team that does not put up with bullshit. The only people who are going to take issue with this are people who want to start bullshit.

This might be a bit disjointed, so please bear with me.

I joined Aethy right before all the shit went down, and I didn't really catch everything that happened. So I didn't really pay it much thought. And since then, it's been pretty peaceful on there.

So when I unexpectedly found your criticisms of the site and its mod, I was a bit taken aback. But now that I have a better idea of what transpired, I would like to hear more of your side of the story.

What I've gathered so far is that one user (who I will refer to as "C") asked Aethy's moderator (henceforth "T") to clarify their rules around reposting art, to which T gave a vague half-answer. C, as well as other users such as yourself, kept pushing for more clarification, both on that matter and on others (like why they had defederated from certain other Mastodon instances). T did not take kindly to this, and they lashed out. Eventually you, C, and others established the Asteroid M instance, and T defederated Aethy from Asteroid M and suspended the accounts of those associated with it, including you and C.

I'm also considering asking T to clarify their side of the story, but based on what I've seen, I'm afraid they will likewise not take kindly to my request.

Hi, I wasn't directly involved in the situation you're describing - for that you'd wanna talk to @unkillablemonsterqueen or @last-knight-who-was - but I also had other reasons to dislike Taullo: mainly, they seemed to be a bit of a cop, allowed spurious allegations (but only against people they dislike), and seems to have some anti-leaning views.

In addition to being anti-para and kind of just a shitty mod, Taullo, despite putting off the image of a nudist hippie who loves freedom of expression, stalks people off site for disagreeing with them, thinks reposting fanart without credit is illegal(?), seems to sincerely think age gates are necessary for more than legal liability reasons, and selectively enforces a "vagueblogging" rule as you've seen.

I deliberately got myself banned from Aethy a while ago so as not to have to deal with them.

Why I'm leaving Aethy and you probably should too

So, I already made a post about the fact Aethy has suddenly banned pro para and pro radqueer people. (Not even just people who are paraphiles or radqueers, just anyone who voices any support for them at all.) Which you can read about here

But the staff at Aethy has also started showing signs of being vindictive and demeaning. My account was limited the first time (after I made a post on there complaining about aethy which they weren't tagged in nor did I tag anything on it) for having "pro para" in my bio. I believe this was retaliation for my post complaining. They commented this on my post. Keep in mind that they weren't tagged nor was anything tagged. This is the staff who found my post and decided to argue with me on it.

Either way, I removed that from my bio and my account was no longer limited.

However, today, my account was limited again. This time, they offered no content that was against TOS nor an actual rule I had broken. The left features the first limitation I received when my account was actually breaking TOS, the second is the one I received after they were upset with me.

Your stance on radqueers or paras aside, I don't appreciate a site where the staff is lashing at or swearing at its users. This site is supposed to be for adults, yet it seems to be run by children. I also find it very uncomfortable that a site that markets themselves as an anti censorship site is telling users to shut up because nobody wants to hear their takes.
