Why I'm leaving Aethy and you probably should too

So, I already made a post about the fact Aethy has suddenly banned pro para and pro radqueer people. (Not even just people who are paraphiles or radqueers, just anyone who voices any support for them at all.) Which you can read about here

But the staff at Aethy has also started showing signs of being vindictive and demeaning. My account was limited the first time (after I made a post on there complaining about aethy which they weren't tagged in nor did I tag anything on it) for having "pro para" in my bio. I believe this was retaliation for my post complaining. They commented this on my post. Keep in mind that they weren't tagged nor was anything tagged. This is the staff who found my post and decided to argue with me on it.

Either way, I removed that from my bio and my account was no longer limited.

However, today, my account was limited again. This time, they offered no content that was against TOS nor an actual rule I had broken. The left features the first limitation I received when my account was actually breaking TOS, the second is the one I received after they were upset with me.

Your stance on radqueers or paras aside, I don't appreciate a site where the staff is lashing at or swearing at its users. This site is supposed to be for adults, yet it seems to be run by children. I also find it very uncomfortable that a site that markets themselves as an anti censorship site is telling users to shut up because nobody wants to hear their takes.

They didn't like people complaining about them on other websites, and wouldn't answer my questions on how vague their terms of service were. (maybe they're stupid questions, but I legitimately didn't understand, possibly due to neurodivergence) The moment someone doesn't allow you to state an honest opinion about their site, all positive reports from it become unreliable.

As a whole, they seemed really petty and inexperienced.

Everytime I see that one yt short about "fixing proshippers' art" I roll my eyes.

And it's not like they are altering anything nsfw either. I've seen them censor a kid in a dress, not sexual at all mind you, by drawing pants over her knees. It's like dude... The drawing wasn't even sexual until you sexualized it...

They like to point fingers at proshippers but they are the ones seeing fetish even when it isn't there.

This is not to say fetish art is bad btw. Just pointing out how antis project more than half of the time

if anyone's curious what actually went down with the aethy "drama:"

1. someone posted art that wasnt theirs and the admin took it down

2. said person threw a fit about it, claimed it was "censorship" to not allow reuploaded artwork that they didn't have permission to use, and insulted other people and staff

3. they were temporarily suspended and in response, one of their friends made a new mastodon instance for themselves

4. friend group started insulting & spreading false rumors about aethy's staff on their instance and off of the fediverse

5. aethy suspended the instance, and now these people are actively harassing aethy's staff via email and through their aethy accounts and are continuing to spread hate & disinfo

Moderation

If anyone has any question about our moderation decisions, please let us know! We've seen some posts saying that we're pro-censorship because we disallow verbally abusive comments against our staff members and we disallow users from stealing art from artists. Unfortunately, there's been a group of people have continued to harass our moderation team for not allowing copyright infringement (something we're clear about up front) and for disallowing verbal abuse.

➼ 1.) Be Respectful

Simply treat others the way you wish to be treated. Intentionally bigoted or inflammatory behavior will result in being banned.

➼ 2.) Keep it Civil

Everyone has differing opinions and views. Please keep things civil and agree to disagree if necessary. If you are asked to change the subject, please do so. Polite and respectful debate is perfectly acceptable. Argumentative and obstinate behavior is not.

➼ 3.) Profanity is Fine

However, please refrain from using sexual, insulting, or defamatory language toward other users.

➼ 4.) No Spam

This includes but is not limited too: loud/obnoxious noises in voice chats, @mention spam, character spam, image spam, and message spam.

➼ 5.) NSFW Channels are for Adults Only

Access to NSFW channels will be provided if asked, as long as you are over the age of 18. Minors will not be given the role. Lying about your age in order to gain access to NSFW channels will result in a ban.

Three Strikes and a Baseball Bat

We operate on a three strikes system, with the addition of a Mega Strike dubbed "a Baseball Bat".

► A user will receive a strike if they break server rules. This is usually a verbal warning and a 10 minute time out if necessary.

► A user will receive a Baseball Bat depending on the severity of the rule breaking. A Baseball Bat is the equivalent of two strikes. Two Baseball Bats is a kick from the server.

► Each strike will last 30 days.

► Baseball Bats last 60 days.

► Users will be informed when they get a strike, as well as the reason why.

► Instant bans will be doled out in certain circumstances, including but not limited to:

encouraging suicide/self harm, victim blaming, serious threats of violence, doxxing, stalking, deliberate use of hate speech, etc.

Ok so I was gonna make an Aethy account but now I'm seeing discourse around Aethy already. What the hell is going on? /genq

So. I was going to just suck it up and keep existing on Aethy, even though they've banned any mentions of being pro para. Until this. I posted on my own personal account (not a reply to anyone, didn't send it to staff, didn't tag staff) and they found it and replied with all this.

Alongside everything else I replied to them with, it's also important to note a couple things. One, this is majorly weird. The staff shouldn't be interacting with the users like this. The staff isn't your friend or your peers, they should be mature and not arguing with you. If my post broke a rule, they should've called for it to be taken down. If it didn't, they shouldn't have interacted at all. Least of all like this.

Two, this is literally anti rhetoric. "Oh everyone using this symbol spreads abusive material." (I also asked them in another reply to provide the statistics showing this.) "We're just preventing real abuse by preventing thought crimes."

Three, I know I said this in my reply, but I want to reiterate. It's weird to say "if you have any criticisms of our site at all, leave instead of complaining."

Honestly, it just feels like people who weren't ready to run a community running a community.

Hate seeing people purposefully seeking out tropes they *know* they'll be uncomfortable with, only for them to trash on said tropes, saying how weird, wrong and gross they are and how they should be banned, etc.

It's like, wow, yeah, turns out that if you dislike something, and you delve into the media with the idea that you'll hate it from the start, you'll think those tropes are bad, shocker.

I'm just saying there's a difference between things that are badly written and things that you dislike. And even if something is "badly written" it still deserves to exist, just because you may dislike it, doesn't mean that everyone will feel the same. Remember that it's a personal choice to finish a book or fic. Don't like? Don't read.

Shut up this is possibly the worst most pointless and stupidest discourse I've seen in my 15+ years on the internet. You are really gonna say with your whole chest that it's misogynistic for there to be more yaoi fics than yuri and not think that's an insane take? The majority of fics on AO3 are written by queer women writing their hearts desires and you're gonna ridicule them for not having the politically correct balance of heart's desires? Weaponized language

Plenty in fandom spaces have felt the brunt of being attacked for trivial reasons. Whether it's a ship they enjoy, a kink they're fond of, or even just following "the wrong person". They see the language of abuse victims twisted and weaponized against them. Toxic individuals are very skilled at concocting up false stories in order to attack their victims by wrapping it in the language of abuse. Hell, queer people deal with this every day by being assigned horrible labels such as "groomer".

On Aethy, we've dealt with these sort of attacks before creating the website. We decided that we wouldn't allow these sorts of attacks to continue there. We know what it's like to be put through horrible harassment campaigns simply because a toxic individual decided to do so. Even now we've had to weather multiple of these attacks simply for existing and curating a safe space for our users. We want to break the cycle of toxic social media user so we're tough on toxic and abusive behavior.

Not only have we strived to create a space that's free from real abusers (those that have committed abuse such as CSA or sexual abuse), but we strive to put a stop to those that would steal the language of that abuse in order to launch toxic attacks. We think we've done a good job so far, and we welcome other adults to check us out! We're an adult community website (non-profit, no data selling) that is dedicated to making a space for adults to freely express themselves without the toxicity and abuse.
