Inspired by @minal_beauty’s post about discounts I thought I would share some thoughts. If you are a henna artist or any artist for that matter, you have been approached by at least one person asking for a discount. It’s infuriating and insulting to say the least. Just yesterday I was on the phone with a client who asked for a discount and I have to tell you it’s a total turn-off. When I hear those words it’s very hard to stay interested in the conversation and in the inquiry at all. But alas, we all need to pay bills so I just try to suck it up and politely let the client know I cannot offer a discount. I know times are tough. I know it’s hard with all the postponements due to the pandemic but just as most couples have struggled during this time so have small businesses. Many of us haven’t had work for over a year. We just can’t afford to offer further discounts. Let’s not forget Henna/Mehndi is an art. You can’t really discount art. If anything art has so much more value. I know sometimes our services can be out of budget for clients but in that instance they can either go with someone else or try increase their budget if possible. It’s really not okay to ask the artist to lower their rates. What do you think? Have you been asked (or harassed!) to offer a discount? How did you handle it?
