Fire Emblem and Aesthetics-A Mini Discussion
So for those who don't know, I don't really play Fire Emblem Heroes, but I still have an interest in seeing what units they release. Usually for fanfic purposes or just keeping track of new resplendent designs. But recently, FEH had an update for the original character of Dagr and it got me thinking about how resplendent from jotunheim look

Combined with FEH's ongoing storyline of taking from Norse mythology it really made me think-"Wait, why don't we have a Norse Fire Emblem game?"
Now look, I'm not here to bemoan that FEH don't have a console version, non gacha style game, but it really got me thinking about how we may be missing out on something relating to the use of a rich mythology and it only being in a mobile game more about collecting waifus and husbandos.
You see, Fire Emblem is no stranger to cribbing from existing mythologies like Norse in Genealogy, Arthurian myth and the matters of France in Elibe, and several characters just straight up being named after mythological/classic literature characters like Beowulf, Sampson, Priam etc. But its always done in this relatively Anglo-Saxon-British-French homogeny of aesthetics for their tales. So we can have a character named Sigurd, but he's not gonna look like he's fresh off the Viking Ship. Now Fire Emblem isn't the only franchise to do this, many pieces of media made by other countries draw upon these sort of exaggerated/romanticized look for fantasy stories all the time. And I want to be clear I am not advocating for "Medieval accuracy," I think that's silly. What I'm more getting at is I feel like FE could do with changing up its setting/aesthetics to perhaps inspire newer experiences.
Now I'm not saying FE as a franchise needs to be reinvented. In fact, I think FE has one of the most universal accessible mechanics in turn-based gaming. Simple to pick up, but still able to create many difficult maps and challenges. And by this point has made the support system one of the most iconic in gaming. But if the mechanics are good, doesn't that mean it could be transplanted into another setting? Well, In a way, yes. But once again, I'm not advocating for FE to stop being this fantasy style sword and sorcery story and become like the Napoleonic wars.
(That is a real Nintendo game by the way. Its wild!)

No what I'm saying is that the broad terms of "Middle Ages Warfare" is much more than simply a certain type Eurocentric fantasy.
I'll tell you what, as much as people like to rip on Birthright, I'm still shocked how it took so long for Fire Emblem to have a game where Japanese culture and aesthetics is super prominent and a main setting for a game. Fire Emblem tends to have one character who is obviously inspired by Japanese culture or even sometimes a single country. But a full blown game where so many characters come from and embrace this Japanese backdrop was unique.

Now of course it was still Birthright, so while you got these cool glimpses of a unique world and story like the Oni inspired Flame Tribe, the start of having a lot of retainers as main characters, the monk class and using fans as a weapons, and even roping in Kitsune. It still doesn't really do much than an average FE adventure with them. But it did at lease prove the the FE formula *could* still work removed from its conventional trappings.
Another in the different aesthetic, but missed opportunity category would be Fire Emblem Three Houses country of Almyra being pretty heavily inspired by Persian/Middle Eastern culture. A country that was gesturing so hard at an interesting idea that its left fan artist and fanfic writers to swoon over the idea of a possible FE game set in Almyra.

And if you want an even more recent example, for all the desert backdrops we've had in Fire Emblem, its kinda astounding it wasn't until Engage that we got a lightly (And admittedly exaggerated) African inspired country.

When I see stuff like this and what FEH is doing it makes me realize that we could be getting more. Im sure the next FE will likely still lean on its typical fantastical Anglo-Saxon look, but eventually there's got to be some spice to it. Sure it may be different, but Fire Emblem is a franchise that with each entry does try to be something different while maintaining certain core gameplay elements. So what is the harm of trying to approach something that looks a bit different?
Im not asking for an extreme change right away. Maybe start lighter. We have tons of pirates in Fire Emblem, why not a pirate/sea based game? We've even had the rare few pirate as a playable character. Its a type of story that could be told within the typical Fire Emblem world.

Then perhaps maybe something a bit more culturally ubiquitous like Greeco-Roman inspired FE? There's plenty of gods and magic, but also swords and spears to draw forth on. Heck, that may even open up new potential enemies or stories to tell with like an Evil Senate or a Gladiator culture. It could even push FE to maybe drop or reinvent certain tropes like how they approach the knighthood type of character where a certain culture's version of knight is different. Maybe even make new classes the way Birthright had to.
Overall, I think Fire Emblem is and always has been a malleable franchise. And because of that, I think it can afford to take certain risks on something as simple as drawing from another culture during the medieval magic era, while still being able to provide things that people still love about the franchise like the combat system and support system. Will there be push back on it looking different? Of course, I remember when Three Houses first teasers dropped and everyone was wondering what was up with the military school outfits and what even race was Claude. And of course a different aesthetic doesn't make the game automatically good. But let's remember, that people were judgmental of Birthright not because it went all in on looking Japanese, but because the general story and writing was lackluster for many.
But if you can make an interesting and likable cast of a characters that elevate the story, and make a memorable world for people to wage war in, I see no reason why you couldn't make Fire Emblem work set in the Netherlands.

Another year and another Choose your Legends were my wishes don't come true✨ Let's break it down!
First, the Tellius moms, because 1. I love them 2. I need the lore 3. Reunite them with their kids please— 4. get creative and make them playable intsys
Then my forgotten favorites, Finn and Mae, who have no alts despite their popularity, but they're cursed for being from old games. SIGH. They deserve better art, better stats, better everything. (Genny got an alt but not Boey or Mae??? 😭)
And. How is it possible that big bads such as Sephiran and Manfroy still aren't in the game??? Why do we have 3 Altinas and only one Winter Sephiran, where are you hiding her husbandos IntSys??? And if we can't get alts of Julius and Arvis, at least give us Manfroy???
I threw a vote at the rare male representation in Heroes, because I miss Elm and I want his TT story already, we only have a New Year alt of him! He's a fun little gremlin
I'm on board with the favorites, such as Sigurd, Eikthyrnir, M!Byleth, or Ivy, so I didn't cast votes for them and stuck to my black sheep. Now, some honorable mentions by game, because 7 ballots is not enough for all the guys I miss in this damned waifu gacha (I'm losing my mind):

I'm just curious to hear your opinion here as well but if you have played Heroes; I have two questions:
Do you have a favorite resplendent hero from each kingdom in Heroes? (Ayra doesn't count since she's the only Vanaheimr resplendent so far)
Since I saw the Eldigan one being up, would you prefer his normal or resplendent attire?
1. I haven’t played Heroes in a long ass time so I can’t really say from each country but I do like resplendent Sigurd and Eldigan
2. I only use a character’s default designs so that’s why I didn’t use his resplendent art

So I put my lvl 8 Elm in a team of lvl 20′s consisting of Wolf, Resplendent Sigurd, and Bridal Say’ri, then made him fight in a special maps against Delthea so I could level grind him while the rest of his teammates sat back and watched. AITA?

The only thing they have in common is…the game expects me to get over 9,000 red Dragonflowers. Despair and Hope Refine Theorycraft

Hey, I'm back. Here's a theorycarft of the weapons of the heroes from the Despair and Hope banner. This banner came after CYL4, so these guys are Gen 4, and we are starting to get the uniformity in these banners. I.S. knows what works, what sells, and a Path of Radiance banner, which we haven't gotten in years, what a good choice after the success of a unanimous praised Three Houses banner (there was also a Genealogy Special banner with all dancers before this but whatever). But now, can these heroes compete with CYL4's new refines, or even CYL5's?

Gatrie : Armored Amour
Lvl. 40 5 ☆  47/42/17/44/35       Max Invest: 56/51/25/53/43
Spirited Spear+: If [Bonus] is active on unit, grants Atk/Def+4 and Special cooldown charge +1 per foe's attack during combat. (Only highest value applied. Does not stack. Special cooldown charge granted even if foe's attack deals 0 damage.)
Moonbow – Fort. Def/Res 3 – Crafty Fighter 3
Gatrie is our second Gen-4 armored unit, and he’s not to far off from B!Edegard in terms of stats. Aside from that, he has a normal banner version of a special inheritable weapon, and it’s no where as good as Arcane Qiang.
Amorous Lance: At the start of turn, if unit is within 2 spaces of an ally, grants Atk/Def+6 to unit and allies within 2 spaces of unit for 1 turn. At the start of combat, if [Bonus] is active on unit or unit’s HP >50%, grants Atk/Def/Res+X (X = 5 + highest bonus on each stat between unit and allies within 2 spaces of unit; calculates each stat bonus independently) and Special cooldown charge +1 per attack during combat. (Only highest value applied. Does not stack.)
So, as an upgraded Spirited Spear, Gatrie will grant himself and allies bonuses to trigger the effect. Then, he gets Bonus Doubler (excluding Spd) on top of Special Charges. Since Armored units don’t get Oath skills or Bonus Doubler, this makes him very unique just with his base effect.
At start of combat for allies within 3 spaces of unit, if the ally has Def < unit's Def - 5, grants Atk/Spd/Def/Res+3 and "reduces damage from foe's first attack by 30%" to those allies during combat. At start of unit's combat, if unit is within 3 spaces of any allies with Def < unit's Def - 5, grants Atk/Def/Res+5 to unit during combat, reduces damage from foe's first attack by X% (if foe can make a follow-up attack, X = 60; otherwise, X = 30) and deals damage = Y% of unit's Def when Special triggers. (Y = unit's max Special cooldown count value × 10, + 20; excludes area-of-effect Specials)
Now, seeing as Gatrie is a womanizer, I thought of him having a gender swapped version on Hilda’s two axes. This would buff “women” (allies with less Def then Gatrie) and buff Gatrie when “women” were around. Obviously, Gatrie has a lot of Def. He’s tied for 5th highest Def and 3rd highest Def at max investment and is made even higher with Fort. Def/Res 3. Because it’s an almost useless condition, I made it so he needs to out Def his allies by 5. No it’s not, “don’t put another tank on your team,” just make sure there is a least one ally with less than 45 Def. Is that too had? Anyway, he gets DR similar to Weaving Fighter, just 10 lower, and more damage Def% TD on his Special, based on his cooldown. Also, while you are likely to give him a save skill, the 3 tile radius buff to allies would just be an player phase effect, unless they are out of range.

Ilyana: Hungering Mage
Lvl. 40 5 ☆  39/38/32/17/40       Resplendent + Max Invest: 50/49/42/27/51
Blárfox+: If unit initiates combat, inflicts Atk/Spd/Def/Res-4 on foe during combat.
Iceberg - Mirror Strike 2 - Res Ploy 3
Ilyana is a 3-4 star blue mage and our newest released hero to get a resplendent version. Wow. She is now sitting alongside Cyril, Valantine! Faye, Resplendent! Sigurd, and Resplendent! Surtr for highest BST in their respective BST class, at max investment. What are you going to do with all that HP and Res, Ilyana? Res Ploy? Initiate combat with a Fox tome and Mirror Strike? Die to a stray dagger? Go hungry? So many options. Anyway, I forgot what Phenoixmaster’s made up tome for her was going to be, so here’s mine.
Hungry Tome: If any foes within 3 rows or 3 columns centered on unit have Res < unit's Res+5, inflicts Spd/Res-7 and [Sabotage] on those foes through their next actions. If unit initiates combat or is within 2 spaces of an ally, inflict Atk/Spd/Res-4, and also, if the foe has [Sabotage] inflict Special cooldown charge -1 on foe per attack (Only highest value applied. Does not stack.) and inflicts penalty on foe's Spd/Res during combat = current bonus on each of foe's stats × 2, (Example: if foe has +7 bonus to Spd, inflicts Spd-19, for a net penalty of Spd-12.) Calculates each stat penalty independently.
At start of combat, if unit's HP ≥ 25%, inflict Atk/Spd/Res-4 on foe, grant bonus to unit’s Atk = total penalties on foe during combat, and restores 7 HP to unit after combat.
It’s the tome version of the Carrot Bow that Spring! Linhardt got, but it inflicts Spd, Res, and [Sabotage] + Guard and Panic Spd/Res if [Sabotage] is on the foe + Dominance + healing after combat. So I heard that Thorn in Telius’s games is bad, too much weight for it’s might. And since she’s most likely to use it, might as well not give it NFU or guaranteed follow-up. But, she relatively fast, and an infantry unit that would like Mag. NFU, so this tome just helps in the Spd diff. Beside, she’s going to nuke with 36 effective Atk. Oh, and she has nothing to lower the attack or protect herself aside from Atk-8 and Guard. Remote Mirror would be a necessary inherit to not get nuked back.

Jill: Fiery Dracoknight

Talregan Axe: Accelerates Special trigger (cooldown count-1). If unit initiates combat or if unit is within 2 spaces of an ally, grants Atk/Spd+6 during combat. If unit initiates combat, unit can make a follow-up attack before foe can counterattack.
Moonbow - Atk/Spd Push 4 - Chill Atk/Spd 2 - Spd/Def Rein 3
As expected Jill did not face the same fate as her father, or any of the other wyvern riders after him, because her is waifu. This 5 star flyer has a perf that has accelerates special and guarantee’s her a Desperation, like the Dive-Bomb skill. She also has the Player Phase standard condition for Atk/Spd+6. So, what can she do now?
Talregan Axe: Accelerates Special trigger (cooldown count-1). If unit initiates combat or if unit is within 2 spaces of an ally, grants Atk/Spd+6, Def/Res+4 during combat and neutralizes effects that guarantee foe's follow-up attacks and effects that prevent unit's follow-up attacks during combat. If unit initiates combat, unit can make a follow-up attack before foe can counterattack.
I added NFU. This is necessary as she would need a flow skill to use her desperation effect. Def/Res+4 is also there for more bulk on counterattacks.
At the start of turn, if unit is within 2 spaces of an ally, grants Atk/Spd+6 to unit, [Canto (1)], and “Unit can move to a space within 2 spaces of any ally within 2 spaces.” At start of combat, if unit's HP ≥ 25%, grants Atk/Spd/ Def/Res+5 during combat, neutralized effects that inflict “Special Cooldown charge -X” on unit, and deal damage = 20% of unit’s Spd.
I mentioned before that her kit works like Dive-Bomb. Well, Dive-Bomb got an upgrade in Aerial Maneuvers, which grants warping power. This just gives her warping power, like the Oath Skills, along with [Canto (1)], like the Alarm skills, giving her two bonuses to use with Atk/Spd Prime if you wish. Along with that, she has NFU, Null-Guard, and True damage based on Spd. All this is to ensure that her second attack will be a special that hurts.

Shinon: Scathing Archer
Lvl. 40 5 ☆  40/38/42/27/24              Max Invest: 49/47/51/35/32
Double Bow: Accelerates Special trigger (cooldown count-1). Effective against flying foes. If unit is not adjacent to an ally, grants Atk/Spd/Def/Res+5 during combat and unit can counterattack regardless of foe's range.
Deadeye - Atk/Def Solo 4 - Lull Atk/Spd 3 - Time's Pulse 3
The edge lord archer that introduced Deadeye, the first new premium Specials restricted to certain classes. He arrived with the worst bow in Tellius, but a great bow in FEH, for having Close Counter. Inscribed Tome technically has Close Foil and Naga and Virtuous Naga has Close Ward, so it is really the only one. It does have the condition that he must be solo, which fits his personality. Now, the issue comes, do we drop the conditional necessary for this effect? Are we ready for a world where a character from 4 years ago gets Close Counter in their weapon unconditional? No. I’m afraid we have to wait for a new hero to have this. Until then, did you see they have Close Counter mixed with Bonus Doubler now?
Double Bow: Accelerates Special trigger (cooldown count-1). Effective against flying foes. If unit initiates combat or if the number of allies adjacent to unit is ≤ 1, grants Atk/Spd/Def/Res+5 during combat, neutralizes effects that guarantee foe's follow-up attacks and effects that prevent unit's follow-up attacks. If unit is not adjacent to an ally unit can counterattack regardless of foe's range.
So, I kept the solo condition, but separated it from the rest of his effect, including NFU.
At start of combat, if unit's HP ≥ 25%, grants Atk/Spd/ Def/Res+5 during combat, neutralized effects that grant “Special cooldown +X” to foe or inflict “Special Cooldown charge -X” on unit, reduces damage from foe's first attack by 30%, and deals damage = X% of unit's Spd when Special triggers. (X = unit's max Special cooldown count value × 10, + 20; excludes area-of-effect Specials)
Next, he has more stats, Tempo, Damage reduction, and adding more Spd based True Damage to his Deadeye. So, yeah. That’s pretty good.

Petrine: Icy Flame-Lancer
Lvl. 40 5 ☆ 42/35/37/30/24              Max Invest: 51/44/46/38/32
Flame Lance: Effective against beast foes. Grants Spd+3. At start of combat, if unit's HP ≥ 50%, calculates damage using foe's Res, and inflicts Spd/Res-5 on foe during combat.
Ignis – Atk/Spd Push 3 – Threat. Atk/Def 2
Petrine, one of Daein's Four Riders, wields the Flame Lance (not to be confused with the Firesweep Lance) with a “callous disdain for those around her”. This here description in game. I got nothing else about her other than she’s a bad bitch. *snaps fingers on left, then right side* She does have one of the few weapons effective against beast, and it calculates damage base specifically on the foe’s Res rather than Def or having adaptive damage. Well, now that everyone is getting “Hexblade”, might as well buff that. Aside from that, we can make her weapon purely offensive. With a character description like that, she could inflict damage on her allies like Fallen Berkut, but let’s just have the downside be having nothing defensive.
Flame Lance: Effective against beast foes. Grants Spd+3. At start of combat, if unit's HP ≥ 25%, calculates damage using the lower of foe's Def or Res, inflicts Spd/Def/Res-5 on foe during combat, and also, if unit or foe initiates combat after moving to a different space, grant unit a guaranteed follow-up attack.
Adaptive damage? Check. Guaranteed follow-up? Well, she has three effects already so, we can put this in the clash condition, like Arcane Qiang.
If unit initiates combat or if the number of allies adjacent to unit is ≤ 2, inflict Spd/Def/Res-5 on foe, unit's first attack deals damage = 15% of foe's Def during combat. If unit initiates combat after moving 2 or more spaces, reduces the percentage of foe's non-Special "reduce damage by X%" skills by 50% during combat (excluding area-of-effect Specials) and foe cannot counterattack.
Next, more solo condition? Sure. Bonus damage on the first hit, taking the foe’s Def like how Rhea takes the foe’s Res, like a mini Moonbow. That would be helpful against the high Def Beast, let’s do it. And we’ll have another clash condition that will pierce through the DR of Cavalry beasts or Beast exclusive passives, while having it so the foe cannot counterattack, like the Firesweept lance. It does have a notable 2 spaces to move for this, but it hopefully, it will help to get past the fact she has block damage. She is basically helpless on enemy phase.
This is the one I would like some critique on, before her refine is scheduled in May. I would like the critique on the rest too. Gimmie the comments!
