You know, it’s been a long time coming, but after playing the game twice, I think it’s appropriate to say.
Danganronpa fans: You should be playing Return to Shironagasu Island!!!!
Tumblr media
Seriously.
Okay, this is a two dollar visual novel on Steam currently that is also being ported as a fully voice VN to the Switch as well.
What’s it about? Well, to put it simply, this game follows a detective named Sen Ikeda and his neurotic assistant, Neneko, as the two are called to an island to investigate why an invitation caused a man to take his own life. Upon arriving to the prestigious island with other eccentric and questionable guests, Ikeda and Neneko soon realize that the place is steeped in one hell of a bloody history and that they won’t be leaving anytime soon.
Okay, but for realsies, this game is great to play for lots of reasons. But the first of them is Neneko. She was pretty much made for the average Danganronpa fan to sink their teeth into, ESPECIALLY IF YOU’RE A TOKO FUKAWA FAN!!!
Tumblr media
Neneko is like the creator of the VN played DR THH and kinned Toko Fukawa so hard that he had to make an entire mystery game around her and also give her a rich bitch girl love interest (sort of) to actually like her back:
Tumblr media
The characters are incredibly fun, the story is alluring, comedic, frightening, and it all comes together for one hell of a dramatic and heartwarming ending for the main characters.
However! A few trigger warnings: Occasional Jumpscares (they’re very mild, but it does have horror tones), human trafficking, violence, blood, guts in jars, the worst men on earth die some pretty violent deaths, torture, and a partial crossdressing plot point (honestly it didn’t come off as transphobic or anything since the main character assumes the character crossdressing is either possibly trans or just enjoys it and is like “Oh hey that’s cool. If you ever have any problems, just talk to me. I’ve met all kinds of people in my line of work.” But I am not trans so I can’t make that call for any of you, so be aware). Oh and some times sequences… but they’re pretty inconsequential. There are a few anime tropes here and there that get a tad “Ughhh…” but nothing too overbearing.
It’s just really done well as a small game and it has everything I love. OH AND ITS TWO DOLLARS ON STEAM!!!!
GO! GO PLAY IT! I’ll stream it often enough if ya can’t, but seriously this game is a total Diamond in the Rough and deserves more attention!

Mae plays Return to Shironagasu Island
Hi,
So, I've neglected this blog a little, not for any particular reason though. I've still been playing a lotta games, a wide variety of games lately. I was planning to write about the Parascientific Escape series. It's a cool mix of visual novel and escape room, but as fun as it was and as much as I enjoyed the series, it's simply too rough and unpolished to recommend. So, in the end I didnt write about it.
I guess that relates to the other reason I've neglected this blog, I play a lot of games, and I often enjoy them and thinking about them, but theres no great impetus or need to write about em. So, I guess thatss the purpose of this blog, to write down my thoughts abouf games and to recommend decent or interesstng oness.
That brings us to today's game, Return to Shironagasu Island. Its a visual novel horror game with mystery elements. It was developed by Hyogo Onimushi. You play Sen Ikeda, a private detectve working in New York. He is hired to investigate a suicide and goes to Shironagasu Island to investigate. He takes his friend/assistant Neneko with him. She's a weird otaku type girl, who looks and acts pretty similar to Kuroki from Watamote. i.e She's plagued with crippiliing social anxiety the entire time. Unlike Kuroki though she has a photographic memory and is often vital in the investigation.
The game's strongest draw is the central mystery of Shironagasu Island. It's satisfying to watch it unfold. There's a neat cast of characters with their own motivations and its fun to puzzle out.
There's not really much more I can say about the game without giving too much away.
Gameplay consists of advancing dialogue, choosing dialogue options and clicking on things of interest. Standard point n click stuff. There are a few unique areas of gameplay, but again that'd be spoiling it. Honestly, its impressive how much the developer manages to achieve with only text and a some nice cg's. It's worth checkiing out for sure, I even wrote this blog post about it afterall.
There are some things I'd change, its often necessary to click the same thing multiple times and its not always clear how to progress. There are also a few possible game-overs if you pick the wrong choice, but these don't really feel impactful nor do they affect the experience besides making you reload and try a different choice.
I'd really like to discuss it with people who have played it, that's one of the best parts of video games. So if this post interests you, you can find all the possiible places to get the game on its offiical websiite below

Review: Return to Shironagasu Island
Tumblr media
Disclaimer: this game is not a yuri visual novel and may contain some male-gaze elements in addition to being a violent horror-mystery game
Played: Completed the true ending but have not seen all of the bad endings (sorry, my heart is too weak) and have not played the extra after story (beach episode?) yet — apprx. 8 hours so far
A detective from New York investigates a secluded island with his special assistant. He soon becomes entangled in ominous secrets and the investigation of an inexplicable murder.
Story
Solid mystery writing with foreshadowing carefully dropped for the reader. Although not all of the characters were developed to the same extent, I did find myself growing fond of the main cast.
The twists near the end were a bit weird but overall engaging and exciting!
As a weakling who can't do horror, I also appreciated how well they telegraphed the jump-scares. (Not that I was looking at that point)
At some points, you'll be able to tell this is a JP-EN translation, but if you've ever watched fansubbed anime, I don't think this will be too big of an issue?
Art
Tumblr media
Indie but charming. There's a lot of CGs, which help illustrate the scenes well, and the BGs definitely let you get an understanding of the locations, especially the creepy island.
The textbox grows on you, and the text readability is very good!
Top tier key visual; need some of that in my life. (The KV is what made the game catch my eye in the first place)
Music
Scary music makes my heart go whoosh Σ(°△°|||)︴
For the most part, music was well chosen to set the mood for scenes.
Gameplay
I'm not a big fan of QTEs and point-and-click in general, but it was alright. The scenes for QTEs were well chosen, but the point-and-click could've been more polished.
Yuri
Not yuri, but Akira could totally be a girl magnet if she wanted to.
Rating: Enjoyed, recommend

GAMES I PLAYED IN 2021!!!!
Yep, I’m doing it, here’s some games I played this year, some/most I haven’t beaten but got near the the end to say that I liked it enough to put here
1. Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception
Tumblr media
It’s a SRPG in a Visual Novel’s skin but the VN part is prominent cause this story’s good!!! Didn’t know that it was technically the second game in the series but with how it’s story is structured it’s a great way to get into the series, but the first game (Utawarerumono: Prelude to the Fallen) is on Steam along with Mask of Truth so give it a go.
2. Legend of the Heroes: Trails in the Sky
Tumblr media
A pretty cool game all things considered since I’m playing a PC port of a PSP game. I’ll be honest, if there wasn’t a way to speed up battles, then I don’t think I would’ve stuck with it. I also don’t think I would’ve stuck with it had I not realized by the second chapter that Estelle is the protag and it’s not a dual protag situation cause home girl can be a real thunderhead in the beginning. Oh, also, this is Trails in the Sky FC, as in First Chapter. It doesn’t feel like until near the end tho.
3. Hollow Knight
Tumblr media
Good game all around, didn’t think I’d like a game that has sentient bugs going through Dark Souls esque bs but here I am. A complaint I kinda have that’s strange to have is that there’s almost too much to do. There’s like 4 different endings and I’m on track to get the 1st one but to get what I’d think would be the best one I’d have to do a fucking boss rush and some of these bosses (tho cool) are annoying lmao. Neat charm system too, like it a lot.
4. Ender Lillies: Queitus of the Knights
Tumblr media
Another metroidvania game with possibly the worst map I’ve ever seen. Doesn’t stop my innate sense of “scour the entire room for every item you can find” though. It’s a lot gloomier than Hollow Knight but there’s enough overlap between the two (and Dark Souls) that I could manage on my own. Also has a charm system like HK and DS but you get other ways to attack by finding spirits in the world and purifying them, which is neat.
5. Voice of Cards: The Isle Dragon Roars
Tumblr media
Yet another Yoko Taro game that does Yoko Taro things but it’s pretty tame imo. The draw of it, to me, is that everything in this game is represented by cards, from the path you “walk” to the characters, enemies, and items. It really does feel like you’re playing a board game complete with a sarcastic narrator or GM.
6. Final Fantasy 14
Tumblr media
Don’t play this game. I am playing it while typing this out. This is the reason why I can’t seem to stick with any other game cause I start thinking about what I could be doing in FF14 and then just do nothing in it. I still love it, but don’t play it. Save yourself.
7. DJ Max Respect V
youtube
Every day, week, month, year until you like it.
8. Return to Shironagasu Island
Tumblr media
A detective horror visual novel that wasn’t made by any big name studio but just a guy with a passion that he wanted to convey, and it’s pretty interesting too. I can’t say much before I go into spoiler territory but nothing is as it seems and even with some tropes you could’ve seen a mile away, I found myself glued to my seat wondering what would happen next.
