In a cricketing nation always hungry for raw pace, Tamil Nadu’s 17-year-old R D Pranav Ragavendra has burst onto the scene with a fiery delivery that touched 147.3 kmph—the fastest recorded by an Indian U-19 bowler at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence.
But Pranav’s focus goes beyond the speed gun.
“I don’t want to be just about pace,” says the soft-spoken teenager from Chennai, who is part of India’s U-19 squad for the upcoming England tour starting June 27, where the team will play two Tests and five ODIs.
From Sprinter to Speedster
Interestingly, Pranav didn’t start out on a cricket pitch. His first love was sprinting, having clocked an impressive 13.76 seconds over 100 metres before turning 13. The shift to cricket came through unexpected circumstances.
“After we had our second child, Pranav became withdrawn,” says his father E Rajendran. “A doctor suggested we introduce him to team sports to help him adjust emotionally—and that’s how cricket entered his life.”
What began as therapy soon evolved into a passion. Once he picked up the red cherry, Pranav never looked back.
Rapid Rise Through the Ranks
At just 16, under the guidance of Australian great Glenn McGrath at the MRF Pace Foundation, Pranav had already touched 139 kmph. His progression since has been remarkable, and Tamil Nadu selectors took note, drafting him into the Ranji Trophy squad, where he played two matches last season.
“Speed comes naturally to him,” says M Senthilnathan, Head Coach of MRF Pace Foundation. “Now it’s about control, consistency, and injury prevention.”
Alongside Pranav, another Tamil Nadu quick, D Deepesh, is also showing promise with speeds above 140 kmph—offering the state hope for a revitalized pace attack.

Despite his blistering pace, Pranav remains grounded.
“I love speed and the thrill of bowling bouncers. But to keep doing it at the top level, I need accuracy. That’s why I don’t obsess over the speed gun,” he says.
