Koulua toisena syksynä (2/4)

Aloitin toisen vuoden opinnot konetekniikan insinöörin tutkinnossa nyt tänä syksynä 2024. Lähinnä aikani on vienyt lujuusoppi, python(+raportointi) ja 3D- mallinnus Solidworksilla. (kuva)

Odottelen vielä, että alkaisi labratyöt hydrauliikssa ja pneumatiikassa.

Ollut suht tärkeä pysyä kärryillä nyt tänäkin syksynä ja nyt tänäkin lauantaina opiskelin lujuusopin tehtäviä.

Yritän kuitenkin tehdä myös töitä aika ainakin yhtenä päivänä viikosta sen takia, että en jäisi ulkopuolelle työyhteisöstä (kun olin opintovuoden poissa oli moni asia muuttunut ja osittain sen takia tunsin itseni ulkopuoliseksi kun palasin töihin), + aikuiskoulutustuki ei minulla jatku enää kauaa. Täytyisi siis myös tienatakin jotain.

Otankin myös kantaa tähän aikuiskoulutustuen leikkausasiaan, koska minulle se oli opiskeluni mahdollistava asia, niinkuin monelle muullekin ikäiselleni, joka on jo vaikka työelämässä. Minulla ei olisi ollut varaa jäädä opintovapaalle ilman sitä. Ihan uskomatonta, että tämä mahdollisuus viedään pois!

Taustastani jonkun verran: Tein lapseni siinä iässä, että opiskeluni jäi kesken (datanomi) ja kun sain toisen lapseni myöhemmin, oltuani 6 vuotta osastonsihteerinä, sain yt:ssä lähteä. Opiskelin omaehtoisesti teknisen suunnittelun perustutkinnon ja päädyin VR Trackille ja sitä kautta Nrc Group:lle, josta Sweco osti suunnittelun. Pitkä tie ollut, mutta antoisa! 😃

Sitten lähdin opiskelemaan konetekniikkaa, koska teknisen suunnittelun pk pohjalla oli paljon koneteknistä teoriaa... Toki maanmittaus olisi myös kiinnostanut.

Työkuvani tällä hetkellä on lähinnä pistepilven käsittelyä jne, jota olen tehnyt jo vr trackin ajoista saakka. Ylläpidämme esim. suomen rataverkon esterekisteriä, jotta erityiskuljetuksia varten pystymme tulkitsemaan mahdolliset esteet.

I can't tell you which laptop to buy

Over the years, I have been asked "Which laptop should I buy?" many, many times. We have now arrived at a point where I can no longer meaningfully answer this question.

In the past, I would have said something like "Get a laptop with enough RAM, and make sure the keyboard, trackpad, and display all work for you. You can't swap out the keyboard, mouse and display like you can in a desktop."

In the past, I would have said something like "Are you just using it for e-mail, Facebook, and Netflix? Are you doing a lot of office productivity stuff? Will you be giving slide presentations? Do you also want to do some light gaming? Do you need an SD card slot for your digital camera? Are you doing video editing/CAD modelling/cinematic 3D rendering?"

It really depends on what kind of laptop you want. You could want a desktop replacement, because you don't have the space for PC. You could want a "luggable" machine that you take from your office to the meeting room or the lecture hall, and back and occasionally to a different location in the trunk of your car. You could want a portable laptop that you keep in a laptop bag, backpack, or briefcase, and sometimes use on your lap or in a café if you are one of these people. You could want a "light" laptop that you carry with you at all times.

I still couldn't tell you which laptop to buy. So many people these days use their phone or a tablet for e-mail, facebook, and netflix that it doesn't really make sense to recommend a small and light laptop. You'd want to be a step above that. So many people use the "cloud" for all their documents and data, so it doesn't make sense for them to think about having a large HDD. If you own a gaming a console and a desktop PC, and you write your e-mails on a tablet, it doesn't really make sense to have a cheap laptop, but it also doesn't make sense to have a big laptop, unless you change your workflow.

Some people still need a CD drive, a large hard disk, or VGA-out, but usually there's a USB-C dock for that use case.

If you never use your laptop anyway, you may as well give Ubuntu a chance. It even runs Steam!

Are there any primitives or operations you wished parametric CAD software had?

This is tricky, because parametric CAD is what I learned to design on so its feature set feels "natural".

I don't really think so! Most of the obvious innovations are already covered, SolidWorks can take a model back and forth between parametric and primitives modelling in its own weird way, Inventor has really great design for manufacture features, from what I've seen SolidEdge has done some clever stuff with the solver to help you design parts that are customizable as you go down the chain. Who knows what's going on in NX these days, not me. There's definitely some holes in the sense of individual packages lacking features, but almost anything you can ask has been implemented somewhere, by someone.

Good quality design for manufacture tools really do help, I remember doing sheet metal stuff in Inventor back before they cut off free Inventor access and being able to see your generated sheet and bend allowances so clearly was great, and now even OnShape has pretty solid design helpers.

A thing small shops and hobbyists would probably like is better handling of point clouds and photogrammetry for matching parts, since you're much more likely to be working with parts and projects where you didn't do all the design, I've spent many hours trying to accurately model a mating feature, but even that's like. Pretty good these days, importing 3D scans into an editor is pretty standard and the good CAD packages will even let you pick up holes and clean up point clouds directly from the scan.

I'm not that much of a mech eng, and never really was, my CAD is mostly self taught for simple tasks, real mechanical designers no doubt have better opinions on this, @literallymechanical probably has thoughts on T-splines.

They’d been this way before, hadn’t they? To be honest, Reed didn’t have an ever-loving clue. No matter how many times she looked at the map, nothing ever looked right. You’d seen one rock or tree or pond, you’d seen ‘em all.

“Y’alrighd, sweetheart?”

Wendy sniffled against Reed’s shoulder, wrinkling her nose. She hadn’t been feeling too well since the storm a few nights ago before had soaked their sleeping bags and tents — and what had started as a case of the sniffles had become a real hell of a cold.

“We cad stop here for the night…” Wendy began, but Reed cut her off.

“You ain’t spending one more night out here, sick as you are. Gunther reckoned he saw snow clouds Tuesday, comin’ straight for the valley.”

Wendy smiled weakly. “He also told ya thad he was champion at cards, but you beat hib every tibe.”

Reed chuckled, patting the horse’s neck as they came across a bubbling stream.

“He’s not all that at cards, but he’s never been wrong about the clouds. Besides, a cold ain’t anything to sneeze-”

Suddenly, Wendy’s breath shuddered, and she buried her nose into the crook of Reed’s neck.

“hhhtch’chiew!”

Reed tightened her grip on the reigns. Wendy tittered and took out her handkerchief.

“Oh, ‘scuse be. Sduck up on me.”

She dabbed her handkerchief on her partner’s neck, then took to dabbing her nose.

Reed swallowed, her face burning. Wendy blew her nose.

“I really ab sorry, Reed. I didn’d mean to.”

Reed cleared her throat. “Don’tcha worry about it. It just, er, surprised me is all.”

Surprised was quite an understatement. Ever since they’d gotten on the road this morning, Wendy’s sniffles and sneezes had distracted Reed to no end. Something about that pink nose scrunching up, her eyelids fluttering, her whimpers, her shuddering breaths…

And her sneezes.

Not only were they as pretty as could be, but they were always bestowed to Reed on her neck or shoulder, leaving a wet spray on her leather vest.

Reed also rode high in her saddle, the rocking between her legs giving her both relief and a burden she could hardly stand carrying.

“Oh, s-sakes ali-hive-!”

Wendy put her handkerchief to her nose again. Her nose wrinkled, and she batted her long eyelashes.

“I thingk I bay…hay-!”

Reed steeled herself, trying to pay attention to the path ahead of her. But between Wendy’s warm, shuddering breath in her ear, as well as her bosom pressing against her with every hitch, along with the steady movement of the saddle…

“Hih-! HIH-!”

Reed grit her teeth, her knuckles white on the reigns.

“HHHHI’tchiiiew!”

Reed put her hands on her calves, bending forward as her pleasure reached its climax. She willed herself not to shudder as she ground her teeth and leaned back against Wendy.

“Mmmph…”

Wendy looked up, once again cleaning up her nose.

“Darling?”

Reed took a deep breath, readjusting herself in the saddle.

“Sorry ‘bout that,” she sighed. “Just a…bur or s-something, I think.”

Wendy rubbed her cheek against Reed’s shoulder.

“If I felt byself, I’d fight off thad bush for ya,” she croaked. “Nobody messes with by ranger.”

Reed bit her lip.

“W-Why don’tcha try to rest a bit?” she said. “We’ve got a while ‘til the next town, if the map’s right. I don’t want you to tire yourself out.”

Wendy murmured her agreement, already dozing against Reed — who was still trying to get her bearings.

But while Reed thought that she’d get some peace while her partner was asleep, she was sorely mistaken.

To keep herself from falling off, Wendy had, at some point in the ride, thrown her arms around Reed’s chest, nestling into her shoulder. As she faded in and out of sleep, she would rub her cold, leaking nose into Reed’s neck, sniffling and murmuring in her dreams.

If wasn’t long before Reed has both hands on the horn of the saddle, trying not to wake her sleeping partner. However, keeping herself together wasn’t as easy as before.

“Nnngh~!”

Reed gasped, bending forward with a shudder. Wendy yawned.

“Mm, honey?” she murmured. “Y’okay?”

“Yep,” Reed said shortly. “Right as rain.”

Wendy put her arms over Reed’s shoulders.

“Why don’d we camp for tonight? We’ve been riding an awful long tibe, and I’b sure you’re exhausted.”

As much as Reed wanted to get off the horse, a part of her still didn’t feel right camping out in the cold while Wendy was sick.

But, before Reed could argue, she felt Wendy’s nose wrinkle against her shoulder.

Oh no. Oh heavens no.

“Hihih-!”

Reed wrapped the reigns around her hands, pulling them tight between her fingers. She held her breath. She bit her lip.

But all she could think of was —

“hhhhh’TCHIEW! TSH’IEW!”

“GAH~!”

Reed convulsed, unable to help herself. She ground against the saddle, gasping with pleasure that she for so long hadn’t allowed herself.

“Hah~! Haah~”

Finally, Reed rested against the horse’s neck, almost bent over the saddle.

“Reed!”

Wendy slid off the saddle, coming to Reed’s side.

“Honey, whad’s wrong? Can ya hear be?”

Reed breathed heavily, still not quite recovered.

“Maybe there’s a physician sobewhere,” Wendy said, grabbing the map. “And get ya checked…”

Read swallowed. “Wendy.”

“I kndew we should’ve camped for the night! And you were tellin’ be not to get worn out!”

“Wendy. ‘S fine.”

“It’s ndot! Oh, it’s all my fault. If I didn’d go and catch this cold, we would’ve-”

Suddenly, Reed leaned over, taking Wendy’s face in her hands.

“Wendy.”

Wendy stopped, looking up at Reed with wide eyes.

“I ain’t sick,” Reed continued. “And it ain’t your fault. And if it is, it’s ‘cause you’re just too damn pretty. You and your pretty little nose.”

Wendy blinked. “Huh?”

She glanced down, then looked up again, her face turning bright red.

“Oh, sweetheart…”

Reed gave a sheepish smile. “It wasn’t hard the first time, y’know…but the second ‘n third…I couldn’t…er…”

“Now, never you mbind!” Wendy interrupted. “Let’s ged all cleaned up, and then I’ll get in with ya in your sleeping bag. I bet you could use some TLC…”

Wendy took Reed’s hand to help her get off the saddle. Reed limped into her lover’s arms.

She’d tell her about the whole sneeze thing later. For now, what she needed was a sleepy night under the stars.

wait so i love the idea of MCD laur being launched into MS season 3. Now i have questions.

Does he end up telling them about being a shadow knight? Or does that… reveal itself (rubbing my hands together menacingly). If so, how does that go down? What’s the reactions? The circumstances? mwahaha

Does he get to visit Cadenza? What’s that like? For that matter, are his dads alive in this universe? (AUGHEUGHEU) Does he ask Cad about them?

Oh now that's an idea...

He 100% would want to keep it on lock down. Even if these alternate versions of his friends are surprisingly chill about him being from another dimension, they even ask him questions about it, there's some stuff he refuses to tell them. Idk where he would start living, maybe with MyS Garrance who knows, but whoever first sees him without a shirt on would no doubt notice the amount of scars across his body. There's a difference between "I come from a dangerous world" and "I have scarring of multiple stab wounds and burn marks that would have easily killed someone."

If anyone tried to ask him about it he would just dodge the question, tell them that it's nothing, just wounds from a battle he's already won. I don't think his calling would fully be able to act up in this other dimension, but it would try to. He'd be hanging out with everyone, getting to know them, and then when he looks over at the now second alternate version of the woman he loves so much, it just happens. In an instant his hands become shaky, his eyes start to cloud over, and all his thoughts are filled with the urge to kill.

And let's remember, at the point he got yoinked out of his original timeline, Laurance has just barely if at all started to come to terms with his condition and what it does to him. He's still in denial about how bad it is because he doesn't want Aphmau to worry or Garroth to distrust him. He doesn't know or understand different symptoms because they just started, and now he's surrounded by people who don't even know what a Shadow Knight is.

I imagine the calling acting up would make Laurance run away, like physically run the fuck away from Lover's Lane with no way to track him because boy has inhuman speed and no phone. The thing that gets him to come back is when they find him hiding in the woods that line the city. And the person who finds him is this dimensions version of Cadenza. The one person who no matter what situation Laurance was in, is able to talk him down.

She's not the same as his sister. When he sees her he can see the difference in them. His sister is a little taller, carries herself differently, and is obviously dressed differently. But her voice sounds so similar, her laugh is the same, and the soft way she talks to a freaking out Laurance is enough to ground him to some sense of reality when he's spiraling. Cadenza was always able to talk Laurance down from a bad decision when they were kids, and now this alternate version of her is able to do the same.

MCD Laur and MyS Cadenza become absolute besties after this. Like forget his budding brotherly relationship with MyS Dante that reflects the same one they had in MCD, he's found someone he can consider family here. He never talks about what happened, just tells everyone it was some warrior instinct that went haywire. What do you mean his eyes sometimes change color when he looks at Aphmau for too long? You're making things up again Travis.

Fun little aside, Laur would 100% tell most of the cast about their counterparts, and Travis would be so upset to learn that he doesn't have one (as far as Laur knows).

And one day Laur goes to Cadenza's house so they can talk and she can figure out a way she can properly dress him. Everyone else lives alone or with another adult roommate, so he doesn't even think to ask about who she lives with. When he knocks on the door, there's nothing that can prepare him for who opens it.

It's Joh.

His dad. His real dad, or the closest thing he had to one. The man who first took him in, and the first person Laurance failed to protect.

Emotions take over logic and he just hugs this man. He doesn't know if Cadenza's informed him of the situation, he doesn't know if he's supposed to pretend to be the other Laurance, and he doesn't care. In a precious moment he's able to hug his father and maybe break down crying while he's hugging him who knows.

I do think Cadenza tried to explain to her dads that the man coming over is an alternate version of Laurance from another dimension. And while Hayden is a sci-fi nerd and can actually wrap his head around the concept, Joh was sort of nodding along for the conversation. He gets that this man looks and acts a lot like his son, but isn't his son. Yet this doppelganger hugs him the exact way his son did when he came home from college, with so much love that it crushes him.

And for Laurance, even if he knows this is no doubt an alternate version of his father, it doesn't matter.
