It's August 30th, 🦈 International Whale Shark Day. On this day, we celebrate the whale shark – the largest species of fish on the planet, growing to a length of 40 feet or more and weighing in at as much as 47,000 pounds. Whale sharks are filter-feeders who eat mostly plankton and small squid and fish. Their enormous appetites demand up to 44 pounds of food daily.

Unlike most other sharks, the whale shark has a slow and gentle demeanor. It usually prefers to swim in shallow depths, which makes it extremely easy for people to catch it. They are continuously hunted for sport, fins, and meat. The whale shark market has led to a 50% decrease in the fish’s population since 1950, which in turn has caused it to be placed on the endangered species list. Their declining numbers negatively impact our planet's marine environments by allowing plankton and algae populations to grow unchecked. After reading “Poached,” by Rachel Love Nuwer, it is clear to me that there is still a disconnect between the two. Whether that be in the form of wildlife trafficking, environmental political ignorance, traditional Chinese medicine, hunting, animal abuse, or whatever else you can think of, we often view ourselves above the wildlife that has evolved next to us over millions of years. I think it’s easy for us as animal lovers to disagree with that statement. It’s easy for me to sit here in my California bubble being fortunate enough to spend everyday doing what I love. That is something I will never take for granted. However I still think the majority of the world either can’t afford to put nature high on the priority list, or doesn’t care to. The only way to change this in my mind is to back AFFORDABLE eco-tourism. Encounters like this, staring into the eyes of a 25 foot whale shark feeding in Bahía de los Angeles, Baja California, are the ways to bridge the gap between Homo sapiens and the rest of the planet. I look forward to devoting my life to this cause! And I also look forward to hearing your thoughts on the matter below. They are beautiful, They are amazing, They are graceful, They are majestic, They are super gentle, They need to be protected, They need to be taken care of, They need to be free, They need to be respected. 7 Fun facts about whaleshark: #1: Whale sharks are the largest fish on the planet. #2: Whale sharks are in no way related to whales. Although they are sharks, they are very docile and pose no real threats to humans. #3: Whale sharks can reach up to 14m (46 feet!) in length. #4: Whale sharks can weigh up to 12 tons. That's 24,000 pounds or nearly 11,000 kilos!. #5: Whale sharks are filter feeders and sieve plankton through their gills for much of their nourishment. They also sieve squid, krill, and small fish. #6: Whale sharks have about 3,000 tiny teeth (less than 6mm long) but they don't use those teeth to eat. #7: Whale sharks aren't the fastest swimmers, reaching speeds no higher than 5 kmph. Despite the name, whale sharks-Rhincodon typus-aren't whales! As the largest know living fish species, they can reach 40+ feet in length and weigh 20-30tons. Though these sharks are very large, they feed solely on small planktonic organisms such as krill, copepods, fish eggs, juvenile invertebrates, small fish and squid. Notice the thick, green water in the video-a sign of phytoplankton abundance! 💥I was incredibly excited to see my FIRST whale shark after nearly 10 years of diving!
