Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over (2003)

I wasn’t able to track down any concrete proof that Robert Rodriguez reworked some unrelated, crappy script about kids going into a virtual world into an installment of the Spy Kids franchise but it wouldn't surprise me if he did. Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over has no spying in it whatsoever and barely features the characters from the previous films. Instead, it offers special effects so poor they’ll make you think you’re watching an unfinished version of the movie, awful performances, and a story that makes no sense. It’s so shockingly terrible the first time you see it, you won’t know what to say. If you’re brave enough to watch it more than once, you might find it hysterical.

Retired from the OSS and working as a private detective, Juni Cortez (Daryl Sabara) is called back into the field when he learns his sister Carmen (Alexa Vega) has gone missing. She entered Game Over, a virtual reality-based video game created by “The Toymaker” (Sylvester Stallone). The highly anticipated game is about to be released and the OSS has just learned that anyone who reaches the unbeatable level 5 will be brainwashed. In the virtual space where anything can happen, Juni summons his grandfather (Ricardo Montalbán) to help, unaware he and the villain have a history.

I should be given an award for concisely and semi-coherently summarizing this plot. Even Spy Kids 3-D doesn’t know what’s going on. Juni's goal is to prevent The Toymaker from brainwashing all children and escaping from his digital prison... at first. Once the film “reveals” that Carmen has been captured while inside the game, everyone forgets the global threat. The mission is now to rescue her and escape the game. Despite this, the theme of family - so prevalent in the other adventures - is completely absent. Antonio Banderas, Carla Gugino and Alexa Vega have little more than cameos as Juni navigates a virtual world created by someone who has obviously never held a controller in their entire life.

So little thought has been poured into this film it’s embarrassing. Juni begins the game with nine lives. As he progresses through the levels, he loses them by getting hit by rivals and falling from great heights. In theory, the closer he gets to zero, the more worried about him the audience will get. Except the way he loses lives doesn’t make sense. Sometimes he loses them one at a time, sometimes he loses as many as three from one hit. If it’s that easy to die, how come the beta testers he meets have all of their lives? Because they’re that good? no. Juni runs circles around them with ease. Because they’ve found extra lives at some point? no. One of them tells us they’ve never seen an extra life pack in the game before. What are they doing in this beta anyway? Shouldn’t the testing be done if the game is released in 72 hours? Why even have testers if the true objective is to brainwash kids and the fifth level is unbeatable? That’s the tip of the iceberg. This script feels like it was written on a bunch of dirty napkins while Rodriguez was waiting for executives to walk into the pitch meeting.

There is so much wrong story and script-wise I could go on longer but it's time to address the special effects and the acting. You might argue the horrible CGI is appropriate for a video game but this movie was released in 2003. It looks WORSE than the original Spy Kids and the game within the movie looks so bad no kid could believably be excited to play it. We're talking an ad for a local grocery store with delusions of grandeur bad. It’s The Phantom Menace cranked to a thousand. Not only can you tell the actors aren’t interacting with anything, they also have no idea where they should be looking. While their feet are sliding all over the floors, goop drips off of CGI armor so unconvincingly no kid - no matter how young - would accept it.

The lack of sets, costumes and props do no favors to the young performers. Daryl Sabara was always the weaker actor between the Cortez children and he’s awful here but at least you can give him some slack. He’s still a kid. Sylvester Stallone? The man’s got no excuse. With some funny costumes that include a military uniform, a bald cap and long hippy-like hair (all of which look horrible) he starts off as bad, becomes “so bad he’s good” and then spirals back around to being bad. One can only conclude from this embarrassing display that there is indeed long-lost hardcore pornographic footage of The Party at Kitty and Stud’s and that Robert Rodriguez is using it for blackmail purposes.

It’s so easy to tear Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over apart that you can probably have fun with it with your friends but to get the full effect, you’d also need to know how much of a betrayal to the series this is. I doubt your friends will be on-board for that kind of research and if they are, the laughter will turn to bitter tears. The first film is flawed but full of charm. The second one is ok for kids. This is a travesty. I can’t comment on the 3-D except that it’s kind of fun in a distracting, obvious and gimmicky fashion but I suspect anyone who watches the film with those red and blue glasses will leave with a headache. If you’re that invested in this, might as well stick all the way to the end of the credits for a small bonus too. (2-D version, July 24, 2020)

also also, worth noting that my biggest bucket list one ever, the dream of all dreams i’d had ever since i started to consciously listen to my own music was something i actually got to do during the most catastrophic case of excessive demand, ticketmaster fuckery, and a dislocated knee on top of all that. like what the actual fuck? did i really go to the eras tour? in crutches? lmao life is crazy! when i get annoying about going to the eras tour it’s because i though for YEARS that i would never be able to see taylor live, so to get to see her singing all the songs i was never able to see throughout the years but had always loved… it was beyond surreal. i just had a credit card and a dream lol

MEXICO CITY — Officials this week announced the creation of 13 new protected areas across six states in Mexico, putting the country’s list of total federally protected areas at 200.

Mexico introduced six new national parks and seven “flora and fauna protection areas” covering 17,918 hectares (44,276 acres) to be overseen by the National Commission of Protected Natural Areas (Conanp). The commission said it expects to declare three additional protected areas by the end of the month.

“It gives us much pleasure that in this administration…we can leave behind such a grand legacy for the Mexican people,” said secretary of the environment and natural resources María Luisa Albores González at a press conference.

The 85-hectare (210-acre) San Quintin National Park was created in Baja California. The 2,076- hectare (5,129-acre) Nopoló National Park and 6,217-hectare (15,362-acre) Loreto II National Park were created in Baja California Sur.

The 4-hectare (9.8-acre) Playa Delfines Flora and Fauna Protection Area, 16-hectare (39-acre) Jacinto Pat Flora and Fauna Protection Area, 37-hectare (91-acre) San Buenaventura Flora and Fauna Protection Area and 10-hectare (24-acre) Cenote Aerolito Flora and Fauna Protection Area were all created in Quintana Roo.

The 2,489-hectare (6,150-acre) Juan M. Banderas Flora and Fauna Protection Area was created in Sinaloa.

The 723-hectare (1,786-acre) Vicente Guerrero National Park and 282-hectare (697-acre) Hermenegildo Galeana Flora and Fauna Protection Area were created in Guerrero.

In the state of Oaxaca, three protected areas were created: the 1,923-hectare (4,751-acre) Bajos de Coyula Flora and Fauna Protection Area, the 2,237-hectare (5,527-acre) Huatulco II National Park and 1,812-hectare (4,477-acre) Ricardo Flores Magón National Park.

The wave of new of protected areas came in response to a mandate from President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to establish a conservation status in areas with “high environmental value.” Since taking office in 2018, López Obrador’s administration has protected over 4 million hectares (9.8 million acres) of land and water.

“I want to go down in history as the president with the second-most protected reserves created,” López Obrador said earlier this year. “…Lázaro Cárdenas has the first spot. I want to aspire to that.”

We watched DreamWork's Puss in Boots (2011). It is a spin off of the Shrek film series rather than a version of the fairytale Puss in Boots. Puss in Boots is directed by Chris Miller with the screenplay by Tom Wheeler. The film follows the origin story of Puss in Boots on his adventures years before the adventures of Shrek 2 (2004). Puss in Boots voiced by Antio Banderas, is accompanied by his friends Humpty Dumpty (Zach Galifianakis) and Kitty Softpaws (Salma Hayek) to battle against Jack and Jill for the ownership of the magical beans and the fortune of the golden eggs. Puss in Boots is named after his signature pair of black boots. He is a fugitive on the run from the law seeking to clear his name. Humpty is Puss in Boots long lost childhood friend who tricked him into committing a bank robbery in his hometown of San Ricardo. Puss in Boots is reluctant to join him again but Kitty Softpaws persuades him. After many adventures, the double crossing Humpty meets his fate and Puss in Boots is hailed as a hero for saving San Ricardo, although the military still regard him as a fugitive. Puss in Boots and Kitty Softpaws share a dance and kiss at the end. But by October 2006, the film had been changed to full release when DreamWorks realised its full potential. During the films production, the team struggled for a long time to include the giant from Jack and the Beanstalk. The results didn't work well and in the end the giant never makes an appearance. Puss in Boots is the first DreamWorks Animation film to be partly made in India. This not only reduce labour costs but also helped as at the time DreamWorks were making three films a year in the US. The film is incredibly action packed as demonstrated in the planting of the beanstalk beans. This includes swirling clouds, erupting ground and huge gusts of wind. Puss in Boots, Humpty and Kitty Softpaws are shown swirling up on the beanstalk as it raises into the sky. Also the cat dance fight scene where Puss in Boots challenges the Masked Kitty (Softpaws) to a dance fight. This scene is fast paced and is very funny!

Puss In Boots is shown in the 2.39:1 (Cinemascope) aspect ratio. The music for Puss in Boots is composed by Henry Jackman. He used folk instruments traditionally found in Latin music. Lady Gaga's song 'Americano' also features in the film. The score was released in October 2011. The premiere for Puss in Boots was held on October 16th 2011 aboard the cruise ship Allure of the Seas in Florida. Puss in Boots was a big box office success and the third highest grossing animated film of the year behind Kung Fu Panda 2 and Cars 2. Puss in Boots was critically well received with an approval rating of 86% and an average rating of 6.9/10. It grossed $70.4 million and was a great success. It included a short animated film called 'The Three Diablos'. Puss in Boots was released on Blu-Ray, DVD and Blu-Ray 3D on the 24th February 2012. Interestingly, Puss in Boots was never released on 4K Blu-Ray in the UK, however the US version is region free. The sequel to Puss in Boots was released in December 2022 and called 'The Last Wish'. I will definitely watch and review this film in future, watch this space! I first saw Puss in Boots when I bought it as a Triple Play Blu-Ray, DVD & Digital Copy in 2012. Puss in Boots is available to stream in the UK on Amazon Prime Video, YouTube and Netflix. I bought it on YouTube in High Definition. Although it is not a film I regularly watch, when I do I really enjoy the visual effects, voice acting and the storyline. Puss in Boots has a quirkiness about it that reminds me of Rango which was released in the same year.

Las pastillas del abuelo y otra fiesta en la Ciudad de Buenos Aires.

Pasadas las 16hs, ya se percibía en las calles aledañas al estadio Arquitecto Ricardo Etcheverri que Caballito sería una fiesta. Guitarras criollas, banderas, bengalas y parlantes se mezclaban entre los grupos de pibes y pibas que llegaron temprano para hacer la previa del show de las Pastillas. Como siempre, la banda porteña superó ampliamente las expectativas de las casi 35 mil personas que se acercaron al Club Ferro Carril Oeste a vivir una noche llena de alegría.

Globos, cánticos y palmas denotaban la ansiedad del público presente en el estadio aún faltando una hora para el inicio del show. Pasadas las 21.30hs, con entradas agotadas, ya no entraba ni un alfiler. Se apagaron las luces, y los gritos ensordecedores del público se mezclaron con el sonido de los primeros acordes de "José", el tema elegido para abrir la noche y hacer delirar a los presentes que, a puro rock and roll hicieron temblar al barrio del centro de la ciudad.

Tras un repaso por la historia de la banda, fue el turno del primer invitado de la noche. Emanuel Noir, líder y cantante de Ke Personajes, se sumó al Piti Fernández para hacer una nueva versión de "Loco por volverla a ver" que puso en alto los celulares de todos aquellos que quisieron registrar ese momento inolvidable. Casi sin dar descanso, la fiesta fue total cuando el silencio se transformó en las primeras notas de uno de los éxitos pastilleros: "Viejo Karma". Unos minutos después, fue el turno de "El favor" con la presencia estelar de Benjamin Amadeo, el segundo y último invitado, quien comenzaba a darle forma al final. Pero todavía habría tiempo para más.

"Tantas escaleras" y "Osiris" fueron el preludio de "Enano", versión en la cual la banda se lució haciendo un mash up con "La parabellum del buen psicópata", un clásico inigualable de Patricio Rey y sus redonditos de ricota. Finalmente, "Ojos de dragón" y "Otra vuelta de tuerca" le dieron cierre a una noche de fiesta en donde Las pastillas, volvieron a demostrar por qué siguen vigentes tras más de 20 años de carrera, con unos seguidores que agotan las entradas en cada presentación y se encargan siempre de agradecer que se hayan inventado las pastillas del abuelo y por supuesto, la 20 que explota.

Ricardo se hallaba terminando su ligero pero energizante y nutritivo desayuno cuando se acerca, la que para él siempre había sido la cara más linda de todas, que le movía el piso. Esta con seria cara, le desea lo mejor en la siguiente competencia, para luego tomar asiento a su lado, esperando tomar valor mientras guardaba silencio. Unos momentos después Mari Vi se atreve de manera valiente a romper aquel incomodo silencio que vino después de ese penoso cambio de mirada. -Sabes me habló Fausto…-.

-A mí también-. Contestó Ricardo. -No quiero oírlo-. Dijo interrumpiendo cualquier tipo de

-Déjalo gan…-. De manera súbita fue interrumpida por Ricardo, quien le manifestó que no quería escuchar eso, diciendo que el haría lo mejor para el bien de todos. -Tu no eras así… cuando me enam… me partes el corazón-. Dijo Mari Vi con lágrimas. -Cambiaste… y para mal-.

-Es increíble que en su desesperación te haya pedido que me vengas a persuadir-. Dijo Ricardo mientras se oía que convocaban a todos los participantes al área de la piscina. Al escuchar esto, se levantó y caminó dándole la espalda a la persona por la que alguna vez tuvo emociones reciprocas.

Llegó a ese lugar donde había una algarabía única, Alicia alzó ambos brazos mientras era ovacionada por la multitud, anunciando el ultimo día de juegos. -Hoy será la prueba más difícil de todas, ya que no solo pone a prueba la resistencia física de los participantes, sino también la fortaleza mental que tienen estos… Es sencillo, se les colocará un rudimentario Huggies Classic, que es el pañal que más se hincha con el agua, para acto seguido comenzar aquella carrera, que comenzará aquí y terminará en el coliseo. La dinámica es sencilla, seguid las banderas que les mancarán el camino a través de obstáculos y montañas. Preferible ir cauteloso a ir rápido… porque podría perder su mente en el camino-. La gente aplaudió mientras se convocaba a las damas, ya que ellas irían primero.

Estas entraron a un cubículo para salir con el grueso pañal designado, que aún no había sido empapado, les dieron la orden a las competidores de ponerse al filo de aquella piscina rectangular de veinticinco metros de largo. -Recuerden, si pierden su pañal en el camino, deben detenerse y colocárselo o serán descalificados-. Arrancó la carrera con un silbatazo, lo que provocó que atravesaran nadando la piscina, hasta que veían a aquellas desaparecer en el horizonte visual de los espectadores.

Pasó alrededor de media hora en la que se anunció a la ganadora de la categoría, siendo Isabela la campeona. Mientras el resto de gente partía hacia el coliseo para celebrar con ella y esperar a ahí, al ganador de la categoría masculina. Las maestras indicaron a los competidores que se equipen, acto seguido alrededor de quince varones estaban al borde de la piscina vistiendo el designado y retro desechable.

Ricardo no sentía nervios, solo una exaltada percepción de todo alrededor de él, con los pensamientos y sentimientos congelados. Mientras que Fausto que se encontraba unos puestos al lado, no dejaba de despegarle la mirada, respirando de manera profunda.

Sonó aquel timbre que representaba el inicio de aquella odisea. De manera súbita todos los concursantes se lanzaron al agua hasta nadar al otro lado. Ricardo sentía como aquella alberca rellenaba su pañal, actuando como un lastre, retrasando su nado estilo libre. Salió de la piscina y corrió a colocarse sus zapatos deportivos, mientras observaba a unos cinco niños llevarle la delantera. Siguió las estipuladas banderas que marcaban el camino, mientras sentía aquel inflado y grueso pañal entre sus piernas, colgándole, quitándole velocidad y aumentando su cansancio. Decidió no correr tan rápido pues sabría que en cualquier momento las cintas cederían y le tocaría detenerse, perdiendo valiosísimo tiempo.

Corrió hasta que el entorno a su alrededor cambio, ahora estaba en medio del bosque con gruesos arboles a los lados, que brindaban sombra y frescor bajó sus inmensas copas verdes. Llegó a una red, como las que poseían los antiguos galeones a vela, comenzó a subirla sintiendo la inquietante inestabilidad que le daban los otros competidores al tratar de ascenderla al mismo tiempo, provocando que varias veces no complete los movimientos, deslizándosele una pierna por aquellos huecos. Una vez arriba observó lo que le aguardaba, un camino de colgantes puentes que contenían hendiduras, de manera pausada comenzó a recorrerlo, para observar a aquellos que tenían la osadía de recorrerlo a toda velocidad, dar pasos en falso hasta perder el equilibrio y caerse varios metros hasta el lodoso suelo.

No alcanzaba a ver a Fausto, le provocaba rabia y adrenalina para seguir más rápido, pensando que este podía hallarse más adelante que él. Terminó aquella fase para al final apreciar a un niño que se sujetaba con las manos, para no caer al precipicio, le extendió una mano mientras le imploraba ayuda. Caería al fango, lo que ocasionaría que, dependiendo de cómo sea su caída, o quede inhabilitado por alguna lesión o que, en el caso más benévolo, solo tenga que repetir aquella sección. Lo abandonó a su suerte para seguir adelante donde yacían cinco hileras de pasamanos. Viendo como algunos niños se quedaban a la mitad de este debido al cansancio, otro contenía las manos sudadas, resbalándosele las manos viendo cómo se caía de pecho, estrellándose contra la superficie que se hallaba varios metros abajo, para mirar hacia arriba en doloroso llanto. Se aventuró a cruzarlo, sintiendo los músculos de sus brazos fatigados. Pero no quería sufrir el mismo destino que aquellos desdichados que se caían, su motivación lo llevó a sacar fuerzas, impulsándose hasta la siguiente agarradera con el cuerpo suspendido, así poco a poco hasta cruzarlo.

Se subió a la correspondiente resbaladera, para otra vez estar al ras del suelo. Siguió trotando hasta divisarse en la cima de un pelado cerro, cubierto por un manto verde de césped tupido. Comenzó a descenderlo con precaución, mientras veía a aquellos avariciosos que corrían bajándolo a toda velocidad, perdiendo el control. Algunos tropezándose para rodarse dando vueltas montaña abajo, mientras gritaban con la esperanza de detenerse, pues sabían que esa rápida bajada podría lesionarlos dejándolos fuera de la carrera.

A pasó firme pero confiado, la bajó de manera cautelosa y lenta, mientras que en la zona más baja de aquella montaña veía a muchos adoloridos que no se volverían a levantar. Siguió aquellos estandartes rojos que marcaban el camino, hasta llegar a un territorio abierto de suelo fangoso y resbaladizo. Frente a él yacían túneles de diez metros de largo con ranuras no mayores a treinta centímetros de alto, por los que debía arrastrarse hasta el otro lado.

Se agachó y comenzó a reptar, levantando la zona de sus caderas para evitar que el roce del pañal con la superficie lograse desprender las cintas. Tal y como le había pasado a Fausto, quien se hallaba atrapado casi al final del túnel, pero teniendo que retroceder debido a que se le había zafado su desechable al principio de esta sección.

Viendo como con envidia Ricardo, comenzaba a pasarlo, reclamando la delantera. Este reacciona con una cascada de adrenalina inyectada directo a su torrente sanguíneo, se puso su pañal que ahora se hallaba manchado por el fango por el que se tenían que arrastrar, y se dispuso con mucha velocidad a llegar al otro lado, sintiendo como mordía el polvo del protagonista.

Los dos se pusieron de pie casi a la vez, y comenzaron a divisar la entrada al coliseo, se hallaban en la recta final de la prueba. Comenzaban a correr de manera pareja, hasta que el Antagonista pierde el equilibrio por el resbaladizo fango, cayéndose al suelo mientras gritaba, por la desesperación, había estado tan cerca pero al mismo tiempo tan lejos de ganar, y salvar su pellejo.

Ricardo solo observó como de reojo este se precipitaba al suelo, para soltar una sonrisa de dulce victoria, mientras escuchaba un desgarrador grito: -¡Noooooo!-. Seguía dando veloces pasos acercándose cada vez más a la meta.

Spy Kids 2: The Island of Lost Dreams (2002)

This second trip to the world of Spy Kids isn’t nearly as fresh or exciting as the first. Still, Spy Kids 2: The Island of Lost Dreams will appeal to its intended audience. While it’s disappointing to see it retread much of the same material as before, there are some new ideas and the sense of fun which won us over the first time is still present.

The Office of Strategic Services has developed an extensive child spy program. 13-year-old Carmen Cortez (Alexa Vega) and 10-year-old Juni Cortez (Daryl Sabara) finish saving the president’s daughter (Taylor Momsen) when they are unexpectedly upstaged by their rivals, Gary and Gerty Giggles (Matt O'Leary and Emily Osment). To prove themselves top spies, Carmen and Juni set out to retrieve the Transmooker - a device which can shut off all electronics - from a group of magnet men seeking global domination.

Giving Juni and Carmen rivals is a good move. By now, they’re experienced spies. Giving them simply another mission wouldn’t be enough, particularly since they’ve worked out most of their brother/sister issues by now. They’re a fully-functional team… at least when Carmen isn’t fawning over Gary. On top of saving the world, they’ve got to beat those snooty Giggles children, and show the world their family is the top spy family. This last idea comes in when we focus on their parents (Antonio Banderas and Carla Gugino) and grandparents (Ricardo Montalbán and Holland Taylor). Expect to see the same kind of zany gadgets and wild imagination as you did the first time. This adventure brings us to wild destinations and contains some unexpected (mostly unexpected) twists.

A noteworthy aspect of Spy Kids 2 are the special effects. They’re extensive and overall, haven't aged well. Over time, Rodriguez has become increasingly enamoured with green screens and CGI. Often, it works but just as frequently, you can feel the actors' desperation as they try to react to locations and creatures that weren't there on set. You miss the physical props and makeup from the first Spy Kids, which only resorted to the computer when it absolutely needed to. It’s clear the combination writer, director, editor is enthusiastic about this project. He takes a moment to showcase his love of Ray Harryhausen’s creations and the recreation of the old-school stop-motion effects are just about perfect. I want to tip my hat towards the Latino director for trying some new tools but this film tries to do too much.

This sequel isn’t as good as its predecessor. The big issue is the story's pacing and flow. When we finally get to the “Island of Lost Dreams”, we don’t get to explore it as much as we wish. Ultimately, the island has little to do with the Transmooker, which makes the script feel less polished or well thought-out as its optimal version. This could’ve probably been two movies if not for the young stars’ age. Unlike James Bond, the members of the”Spy Kids” can only be in their own movies so many times...

Spy Kids 2 shows this series has legs. Rodriguez could make many more of these as long as he puts in the time and effort to tighten the writing. It’s a sequel that isn’t as good as the first but most viewers won’t mind. Stick around for the end credits if you’re a kid and seeing Alexa Vega perform a pop song interests you. If you’re an adult, you won’t miss much by skipping it but there's other footage as the credits scroll that's fun. (June 12, 2020)
