Sad to see the passing of another music pioneer: The great Rick Hall who has passed away aged 85. While on assignment for J.Crew in 2011 photographing Billy Reid in Florence, Alabama we took a trip to nearby Muscle Shoals and talked our way into Rick’s office for a chat and impromptu photo session.

@Bishopgunnmusic headed down to the recently-reopened Fame Studios in #MuscleShoals, looking to record “Alabama” in one of the state’s most famous rooms. The bandmates were still in the van when they received a phone call telling them that #RickHall, the studio’s owner for more than 50 years, had passed away. At the urging of Hall’s son, Rodney, Bishop Gunn continued driving to Fame, where they recorded “Alabama” with help from a number of local musicians — including rapper @Gmanemusic, who sang the song’s wordless intro and later starred in the music video, playing a godless preacher — in the same room that spawned countless songs of the South. https://www.instagram.com/p/BouiCkZh9Qr/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1rwfxb3wvynxn
