So I created a new Tumblr account and here's what I saw. Just like Twitter before I left it to come here, the "For you" tab is now the default. If you click the home icon, that's what it goes to, even if you switch to the "Following" tab first. It will always default to "For you".

For comparison, I included a second screenshot of what my dash controls look like when I'm logged in as @striderstable. The "Following" tab is the default, and "For you" is just there for you to switch to if you so choose.

So what is "For you"? Well, you can bet that it ISN'T "For you." Even if it seems so now, it is definitely not "For you". It's for THEM. For their advertisers and promoted sites and so on. And you can also bet that if they're doing this with new users now, it's only a matter of time before they implement it across the board.

It also confirms some users suspicions that getting rid of avatars was in order to sneak paid-for content onto your dash without you noticing. Sure, longtime users won't be fooled by this, but unfortunately they're not the target audience anymore.

The perpetrators of this great villainy still think they can grab a sizeable share of users from the site formerly known as Twitter, and perhaps they're right.

Regardless, this heralds the end of those halcyon days when small sites could hope to have a chance to be seen on this platform.

so who'd shocked? this is like, the 3rd death, at least. i don't know, this place has been driving into the ground more times than i can count and god knows it's not like the current management has done any better.

when you need a dashboard unfucker script on top of a rewritten xkit to make it manageable, maybe you have a history of issues.

Look I get there's like some upper management reshuffling at Tumblr right now, but that doesn't mean the site's gonna drop dead. I'm fairly certain they'd say if the site's gonna be shut down.

I have really bad anxiety issues and seeing people lose their shit over the prospect of this site dying is really stressing me out. Can we all just chill? Instead of acting like the boat is sinking because the captain went to the bathroom, how about we wait until the captain says we've hit an iceberg. Ok?

Tumblr's Gone What Do You Do?

I've been thinking about starting up a new tumblr blog (about my new digicam obsession) but I always wrestle with the fact of do I want to build in someone's else's playground.

It got me thinking if Tumblr went away today where would I go? What are your post Tumblr plans?

Assume for sake of argument that Tumblr could go away.

It's Monday morning you wake up and go to check your feed and you get a nice message how Tumblr is dead. What do you do?

For me, I could easily switch over to WordPress but then I miss out on that community atmosphere. Twitter hasn't been good to me in the past and most of my posts are text based so Instagram doesn't make a lot of sense. Maybe Facebook but that just seems sad.

yknow what else, it makes sense that tumblr started auto- and retro-adding the 'youtube' tag to every post that embeds a youtube video

for whatever reason when ppl reblog (on mobile i think?) the prev tags get automatically copied which is !! super annoying when i'm trying to lookat the tags on one of my posts !!😭

Can I just say that this news that tumblr is running on a skeleton crew doesnt really makes me want to put any money into it, although I def considered it. Why burn money on tumblr if the platform goes to shit anyways?

Management doesnt seem to understand that trust is a big issue here. Building trust takes time, consistency and taking the needs of your userbase seriously. Theyre giving us neither of this and then be surprised why tumblr's attempts at making the platform monetizable arent working out. geee i wonder why...
