Roaring sea, Westport, Ma, yesterday. “Rip Currents— No Swimming,” signs posted. Tough to stay upright in waste-deep, churning water. Exhilarating! #roaringsea #westportma #horseneckbeach #bodysurf #oceanwaves #beachtime #beachlife #ripcurrents #noswimmimg #geodelart #undertow #gloriousbeach https://www.instagram.com/p/CiVLWwNLDCm/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Rip currents are by far one of the most dangerous things that can happen when you’re on the beach. More people are killed by them alone than by all other natural disasters combined. Continue reading on to learn about rip currents and how to avoid them.

'No Archive Warnings Apply' does not mean 'Rated E for Everyone! Nothing that anyone could possibly find objectionable is contained herein!'
'Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings' does not mean 'Contains One Or More Of The Archive Warnings, something in here Will upset you!'
There are currently four Archive warnings. They are for Graphic Depictions of Violence, Major Character Death, Rape/Non-Con, and Underage.
I can write (I have written) psychological horror, or fics about abusive relationships, or other dark subject matter, or, hell, explicit porn, that hit none of these Archive warnings. They are all (correctly) marked 'No Archive Warnings Apply'. Because none of the content that the Archive warnings apply to is contained in them.
Does that mean they're G-rated family-friendly Disney fluff? Fuck no! And if someone's been misled to think that 'No Archive Warnings Apply' means 'Inoffensive To Everyone, You Can Show This To Any Given Five-Year-Old', they are going to have wildly incorrect expectations going into those fics, and may not be prepared for what they find. Which isn't fair to them as a reader or me as a writer.
'Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings' just means literally exactly what it says on the tin. The author chose not to use the Archive warnings. It might contain content that they'd have to warn for. It might not. Some authors are personally opposed to the whole concept of trigger tags and warnings, and simply refuse to use them even in their most G-rated inoffensive fic ('Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings' was, IIRC, partly a compromise for these authors when the Archive was being designed). Fics that get imported from other sites en masse for preservation are also automatically slapped with this label, because nobody has time to go through each and every fic to see if they contain content that would fall under the Archive warnings, and the authors aren't always available to do it themselves. (Sometimes the authors have moved on, or are uncontactable. Sometimes the authors are literally dead.)
'Chose Not To Use Content Warnings' is the 'No Lifeguard On Duty: Swim At Own Risk' of the AO3. It doesn't mean there's a ripcurrent out there that will drown you if you set foot in the water. It means you have to judge your own strength as a swimmer, what the shoreline looks like, and what risks you're willing to take.
Unlike the 'Gen/Teen/Mature/Explicit' rating system, which has some overlap and some significant wiggle room for interpretation, the Archive warnings are incredibly clear about what they cover and what they don't cover. Please don't read into them any farther than what they say on the tin. Providing that kind of context is what the ratings and additional tags are for!

There's still some time before our departure, we can rest here for now. The most memorable of my diving experience? Probably the time we came across a rip current. The strength of a ripcurrent is like many invisible hands, I tried to move toward the light of the coast, but my body was dragged back down over and over again… Looking back on it, it was a real thrill. But this time, there's no need to worry. I've already checked on the current and tides for today, it should be quite nice. So, take it easy and enjoy your vacation, Commandant. In the case that you do encounter some unforseen circumstances, I'll protect you. We haven't been to the seaside in a long time, it'll make for an interesting training environment
-- Happy activation day, Lee

Also merfolk tide pool, forgot to add that. But I don't think you fear the ocean, but actually rather like it, leading to the ocean liking you as much as you like it.
I don't fear the ocean but I do have a healthy respect for her, given I grew up on her shores and was even dunked in her waves as a newborn (yes I'm serious, it was intentional, my mom calls it my "(hometown) baptism", neither of my parents are religious) and a healthy amount of respect for the ocean sure looks like fear to an outsider. They think we're paranoid about tsunamis and riptides/ripcurrents. We aren't.
But at the same time the ocean is like a grandmother to me and I won't tolerate slander of her. Her creatures are BEAUTIFUL I won't tolerate any slander.

Black Pelicans
Hey everyone! I know this is usually when I post a myth but I haven't been feeling particularly well this week and so I decided to do something shorter and a little less involved. Let's talk hedgebeasts and folklore, and a fun little intersection between the two!
Some notes before we start: yes, folklore around black pelicans in the Outer Banks is real, though I may have the origin date of the stories wrong (I've had trouble nailing down a specific time period for when they first started.) I decided to use hobgoblin stats for them even though I wouldn't necessarily say all hedgebeasts are hobgoblins if only because there are definitely cases where I wouldn't feel the need to give a whole statblock to one. These guys are fairly important to the region, however, so here we are.
Also also: if you don't think I have plans for Geist in the Outer Banks given the whole "Graveyard of the Atlantic" nickname, oh boy, you've got another thing coming. ;>
The Black Pelicans
The coastline of North Carolina is infamously dangerous to sail. Nicknamed the Graveyard of the Atlantic, in an era before GPS the ever-shifting sands of the Outer Banks, violent shifts in weather, and deadly ripcurrents provided perfect conditions to send ships to the bottom of the ocean. The most famous victim claimed by the coastline was Queen Anne's Revenge, the ship of Blackbeard.
In the early 1900's, rumors proliferated among sailors of a strange sort of seaguide: a black pelican that would guide ships and stranded sailors alike to the safety of mainland shores. Likely untrue, but the tales stuck around in the minds of both mariners and those who had never left the mainland.
And that which captures the imaginations of mortals will surely find its way into the Hedge.
The Black Pelicans are a hedgebeast primarily native to the trods of the Carolina shores, though some have been sighted even as far inland as the Sandhills. As their name would suggest, they look at a distance like an unremarkable black-colored pelican, but closer inspection shows they're less an ordinary bird and more of a dark, featureless bird-shaped void in the world. Attempts to study them have proven difficult since they have a remarkable skill for escaping from any kind of perceived threat. More importantly, any Changeling who plans on navigating the Hedge wouldn't dare risk losing their trust, and countless Changelings who have escaped from the Gentry into the coast of North Carolina claim they were guided out to Ironside by a Black Pelican.
What is known for certain is this: all stories told by those who have encountered them seem to indicate they are mostly benevolent, they understand human speech, are capable of heading as deep into the Hedge as the Thorns, and can always, always find the perfect path out for those in need.
Nothing in the world of Faerie is ever free, however, and this raises the question of exactly what they're taking in return.

day ten: kiss (a continuation of heat and echo)
--
(follow the complete story, try / cry / why? (just a dream) as it posts daily or on AO3)
– “You chose her,” Cora intoned. “And the consequences of that decision.” (2B canon divergence wherein Emma and Killian deal with the consequences.)
Tumblr media
She watches him, the words suspended between them; the tide washes out---her hand unfurls, the sparks vanish, the thought unspoken:
To be the Savior.
To have a soul.
Each, in its own way, a curse.
(Broken shards, pieces that fit together.)
Her gaze is the flicker of a candle ---soft, but bright---but what he feels is the blue at its center, where the fire burns hottest.
(How can he continue to bear the darkness, without her light? How has he lived all of these years without it?)
“I’m sorry,” she says. “Even after everything I did to you, you came back for me, today in the hallway. No one’s ever done that for me before.”
(And it’s such a small thing on the scale of what they have done to each other, but---)
(Her love, whomever he was, whatever his voice sounded like, certainly had not.)
(Neither had her family.)
“I wasn’t wrong about you, and I’m sorry. I guess I can say that here, in my dream. That’s what this is, right?”
He opens his mouth to speak---his usual refrain, his instinct to push back---Aye, Swan, it’s just a dream---the words are swallowed by her lips on his, and every nerve is afire; it is more than a spark, it is a conflagration of pure and perfect potential energy seeking kindling to feed its flame. He gives in, opening with a growl, with a hunger, that should frighten her as it frightens him but she just winds her arms around his neck and draws him closer.
(Vita non est vivere sed valere vita est.)
(Life is more than merely staying alive.)
The feeling of wanting her close is more than a need, it is a compulsion.
He can no more stop kissing her than he can stop breathing.
But the tide has rushed back in.
Not a tide, a ripcurrent---a rapture of the deep---his emotions this time, not hers---
(Never mind that she can feel them as if they are her own)
---and doused the spark, the flame, the fire. And he cannot handle it.
“This---isn’t---real,” he gasps, pulling himself away, putting distance between them, breathing heavily in a way that has nothing to do with his injuries and everything to do with the way the air has vacated his body and left his heart broken and betrayed but still beating in time with Emma’s.
(This isn’t real. It can’t be.)

It's crucial to be aware of rip currents before entering the waves since every surfer will eventually encounter one. Rip currents are often mistaken for being dangerous when in reality they just require a different surfing technique. Continue reading on to learn more about rip currents and how to surf them.
