Chapter 14: Meeting
Wow! Other blog from me again, hope you like the chapter!
"Caw, caw." For the first time in weeks, the crow we had in captivity, did not sound repeatedly like previous times (besides being irritating if you hear it every day). Why am I talking about the crow? Well, I'll say why: since I had the incident I had recently after discovering "a crow person" while exploring the tunnels of the house.
Thanks to the description we both made, we were able to generate several hypotheses and theories without arguments, but that served as suspicion about what it could be, as a couple of teenagers playing pranks in town, a person with strange tastes, a sect with unknown purposes and the last one is not even planned. I look behind me and look at Adelle with one eyebrow raised, her arms crossed around her chest, waiting for me to eat breakfast.
-Could we just for one day be people resting?
Oh, I forgot we had the day off.
-I'm sorry, dear, it's just that work consumed me," I replied frankly.
Adelle gave me a nice smile and went downstairs to serve breakfast. Before I go downstairs, I go to Ted's room to take him downstairs to the dining room. "Let's get you breakfast Teddy." I go downstairs and settle Ted in his chair. Adelle serves two plates of scrambled eggs with bacon .
-How delicious. I comment.
We both eat quietly while Adelle feeds Ted. This makes me think that Lisa will also live these moments of life. ~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.
Having an empty cupboard, I decided to take on the role of "productive husband on a slow day."
-Don't forget dinner time," Adelle called from the kitchen.
-I'll be on time, dear!
Leaving the house, I headed for the only store in town, where Mrs. Tillman's is. Sometimes it's hard to come home with everything you set out on your shopping list because, as the groceries were sold out every week, they kept emptying frequently, but on the other hand, if you got there early, you went home happy with your purchases.
When I finished my work at the supermarket, I decided to go to work and let Adelle know that I would be a few minutes early. The day went by and the hours went by. Without any inspiration to continue with the research, I decided to go to the library to look for more information to see more details.
What could the raven men he saw be about?
Had the weather situation in Raven Brooks been going on for a while now and no one was encouraged to investigate its causes?
My questions were dispelled as I entered the large library in front of me. Huge shelves of books covered most of the room with chairs and tables. The smell of old wood gave it an old, studenty feel. Having the student and professional sections, I decided to look for geography and meteorology, but only a few books appeared. I guess Raven Brooks also has its own geography, because it has little outside data.
With the necessary books, I start reading and taking notes on possible key ideas for the weather situation and what the town is like geographically. They mention that it is a forested area and that there is a lot of land, plus it rains frequently (like the time we went to the weather station and on the way back it rained heavily), earthquakes rarely occur and they talk about Mayak 0-14, a natural phenomenon that occurs randomly and consists of the sky turning purple, illuminating with purple rays, plus crows squawking as they circle around in a circle. They do not give the causes or origins of this event, so it shrouds it in a mystical and mysterious aura.
The next few pages talked about how unpredictable the weather is in Raven Brooks, how a week can be cloudy, there are even days when the wind doesn't blow often. Flooding is also part of this but it is mentioned that it is very unlikely to occur as there is no sea nearby.
Another natural phenomenon unique to the town is "The eye of dusk", a climatic condition that occurs during the Christmas season. When the night sky is completely clear, the stars mysteriously align around the moon as a small cloud positions itself around the moon to form the blissful event.
So many phenomena occur in this town and so few answers.
As I was about to pick up a history book, a brown paperback was peeking through the others. Upon closer inspection, it was actually dark brown with gold edges. It had no name but as I flipped through it, the first leaf read:
"History of Raven Brooks."
Turning a few pages, it mentioned that the Tavish founded the town along with other people of power. The origin of the golden apple is also mentioned. Gammy Flo was the creator of this sweet invention, since, by combining chocolate and caramel, she made it known.
Later, the Tavish family inherited Gammy's invention and thus their empire began to grow, becoming the most powerful family in town. Many photos appear of them in their luxurious home. The one that stood out the most was one in which they were posing smiling while Mr. Tavish had a frown on his face, while Mrs. Tavish was smiling proudly. In the background of the photo were also some knight armor with a sword.

From book 4 (Bad Blood) of Aaron's trilogy
In the background of the photo were also some knight armor with a sword.
"So, they think they're royalty, huh?"
"They will regret their actions in the future."
-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-
Having enough information, I left the library and, instead of going back to my place of work, I decided to call Adelle if I needed anything.
-Who is this?
-It's me, Roger.
-Hello, dear.
-How are you? Do you need anything?
-I'm glad you asked, I'm fine, I'm just… I had an unexpected visit from Rita.
-Rita?
I haven't seen her in a while, I'm glad she's well.
-That's right, come back when you finish your hour.
-I will.
-See you in a while.
-See you later.
I hang up the phone and go back to my work…..
-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~
-It's nice to have you here with us, Rita. It's been a while since we've seen you," I reply.
-I'm glad to see you both, too.
-The reason why I didn't come those days was because of…- Rita averts her eyes and crosses her arms around her chest. -A situation I had that left me without strength, that's all.
We both exchange a puzzled look. Could it be what Adelle told me? Most likely yes.
-We understand perfectly well, Rita. The important thing is that you're here. Adelle put a hand on her shoulder.
She could only manage a small, sad smile. She didn't hesitate for a second to smile frankly and hug us tightly,
-We'd better catch up, hadn't we?
-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~
-Let's get back to work.
"Have you ever heard of forest protectors," Rita asks.
We both deny, but we tell that we had a sighting of a person supposedly related to the "forest protectors", that we only met once. At that, Rita tells us the following:
"According to rumors, they are said to be a sect that is hidden in the shadows of the town, their purpose is uncertain but, it is mentioned that they are related to the Tavish family , plus they and a few people are in there. From what I came to hear, only those who have a name here, plus…. you know, swear allegiance to them and earn their respect."
-That's from what I've heard, from the locals here," Rita replies.
Adelle and I exchanged glances. What if that person was one of them?
-If they came across a person dressed like that, then he is one of them.
At that, with determination, Rita stands in front of us and holds out her hand: "Is there one more space? Because I'll be able to be of help to you on this, I'll be undercover."
Another extra pair of hands wouldn't hurt. We smile and take her hand in acceptance.
"Welcome aboard, Rita Ryland."

And here is Mrs. Ryland - a geography teacher and the second (of known people) after Ted who has a bunker (can you call a huge basement a bunker🤔?) under his own house. Also one of those who knows the truth about the device, the Ravens and the Peterson family. My favorite character, even though she was little revealed. I also want to draw Dale and Tavish

it’s that time again, I’ve compiled a list of the fc’s that haven’t been used in more than a month (mine included). If you’ve decided to drop them or are not feeling anymore muse you know that is perfectly fine, just let the main know and let the other half of the pairing know! I love you all so much and I don’t do this list to put pressure on anyone, I do it just so you can physically see the names and make a decision but there is absolutely no pressure ! ♡

Book Recommendation: Been There, Done That(writing stories from real life). Authors: Multiple. Edited by Mike Wenchell.
It’s a collection of short stories that are inspired by/based on real events in the authors lives. The book shows you how the writers took those and used them in their writing with a short story. The book works so the authors recounts the event then it’s followed with the short story that event is based on/inspired by.
There is a delightful variety of stories and genres, so something for everyone. And I think it makes for a nice teaching book as well. The stories are good reads, but is also educational to see exactly how they created what they did. You can also get some decent writing advice in here as well. As a bonus, it’s also a way to sample writing from authors you may not have heard of before.
The stories and authors are divided into sections: Follow The Leader: The Push and Pull of Peer Pressure. Gary D. Schmidt - Caroline Starr Rose - Alan Lawrence Sitomer - Claire Legrand If Only... Dealing With Regret, Guilt and Sadness. Julia Alvarez - Linda Sue Park - Lisa Yee I Can’t Believe You Did That! Being Surprised at What Some People Do. Chris Rylander - Dee Garretson - Nathan Hale
Sacrifice: Putting Others First. Matthew J. Kirby - Tracy Edward Wymer -Jane Yolen - Heidi E. Y. Stemple - Then Jane and Heidi have a collaboration story at the end in this section.
Why or Why Not? Asking Questions About The World Around You. Adam Rex - Margarita Engle - Kate Messener
Things Will Never be The Same: Dealing With Change. Rita Williams-Garcia - Grace Lin - Karen Cushman.
This is one of those books where some of the stories just either hit home or stick with you for varying reasons. I got my copy at a local Dollar Tree. It’s easily worth more than a dollar(usd) though. It’s a good read and worth your time to check it out.

Mary Lindsey is a multi award-winning, RITA® nominated author of romance for adults and teens. She lives on an island in the middle of a river. Seriously, she does. When not writing, she wrangles her rowdy pack of three teens, two Cairn Terriers, and one husband. Inexplicably, her favorite animal is the giant anteater and at one point, she had over 200 "pet" Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches. The roaches are a long story involving three science-crazed kids and a soft spot for rescue animals. The good news is, the "pet" roaches found a home... somewhere else.

This is a spoiler-free review of Haven by Mary Lindsey. This was a book that I quickly fell in love with, and I am so incredibly excited to share with all of you my thoughts about it. I was hooked from start to finish, and the world blew me away.
I received this eARC (advanced readers copy) of Haven through Netgalley, thanks to Entangled Publishing for reviewing purposes. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
The first thing that pulled me in to requesting this book was the beautiful cover. Admittedly, I am someone who judges a book by it’s cover, or at least a cover is the first thing that influences me to pick up a book. I think maybe that’s because I’m an artist. Anyways, I’m rambling.
Book Summary:
Haven is centered around Rain Ryland, a teen whose been down on his luck. He goes from living on the streets to being whisked away to the small town of New Wurzburg to live with his only existing relative, his aunt. Upon arriving in this new, peculiar town he meets Friederike, who goes by Freddie. He quickly learns this town isn’t what it seems.
Rain is a fiery character who sticks to his decisions. He finds himself falling for Freddie, and she begins falling for him, too. Despite her warnings to keep away from him, for fear of his life, he doesn’t listen. He sticks by her and in the process begins to uncover secrets he could never imagine, of a monsterous magnitude.
Overall Thoughts:
I won’t keep going too much with a summary because I don’t want to spoil things, but I found this story to be really wonderful. Mary Lindsey wonderfully built the world, and enough information was revealed over time to keep me wanting more. I did not feel overwhelmed with the story, which kept me hooked. When an author can make it so that I don’t realize I’m reading, I’m definitely enthused!
There was a large cast of characters, but of course I absolutely adored the romance between Freddie and Rain. One thing I’ve noticed in paranormal romances is sometimes the paranormal side of the romance tends to be over protective with the human side having little choice in matters concerning them self. Haven does not have this.
Both Rain and Freddie are strong willed characters. Despite Freddie’s warnings, Rain presses on. Freddie is also willing to do whatever it takes to uncover her own mysteries (which, in the process, uncovers some unknown facts about Rain’s heritage and his fate in New Wurzburg).
There is also a large cast of other characters (and creatures), which I would adore to learn more about, though I was perfectly satisfied with the story given. i just really loved the characters!
Final Thoughts:
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes paranormal romance with a mix of mystery. Some common tropes in this book was overcoming odds and opposites attract. Furthermore, for those who loved books such as Twilight, this should be something you add to your shelf immediately.

About the Author
Mary Lindsey is a multi award-winning, RITA® nominated author of romance for adults and teens. She lives on an island in the middle of a river. Seriously, she does. When not writing, she wrangles her rowdy pack of three teens, two Cairn Terriers, and one husband.
Inexplicably, her favorite animal is the giant anteater and at one point, she had over 200 “pet” Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches. The roaches are a long story involving three science-crazed kids and a soft spot for rescue animals. The good news is, the “pet” roaches found a home… somewhere else.

Huge thanks to Mary Lindsey, Entangled Publishing, and Rockstar Book Tours for sending a free egalley of this title my way in exchange for an honest review! This in no way altered my read of or opinions on this book.
Tumblr media
This book is a BEAST, Penguins–a fantastically dark, delightfully atmospheric, gorgeously penned beast. Someone really ought to chain it up in my basement so it can’t escape, because HONESTLY, I just cannot even begin to explain my adoration right now. It’s too huge. (Also, side note, I don’t actually have a basement… but I mean, if you want to buy me a physical copy for my shelves? I wouldn’t say no to that. Just saying.)
The prose Mary Lindsey wove throughout these pages is darkly delicious and intricately detailed. Every sense was called into play–I could hear every sound, taste every breeze, feel every ridge of the world taking root around me. Before I even started this journey, the cover lured me in. Everything about this book screamed “READ ME”…and I did, Penguins. And what a wild, beautiful, alluring journey it was! The poet in me is so satisfied right now–the imagery was brilliantly rendered, the prose was purple and flowery… I just… GAH. New favorite author alert? Check and check!
Tumblr media
I really adore that Mary Lindsey played with the lore of witches and werewolves…and then molded them, even if only slightly, to fit her needs/purpose. The world-building and backstory of this book are laid out in snippets and pieces–enough to give readers the answers they need at the time, but never enough to give away the whole picture. And while the ending is brighter than the rest of this read, with just a small nodding to hope…the whole book was so poignantly dark and disturbing, I’m not sure I’d call it a happy ending per se. Which I ADORED, Penguins–I mean let’s be honest here, happy endings? Overused. Cliche. Mary Lindsey found that beautiful middle ground for this book, and left me drooling for more!
I cannot sing enough praises for this read. The atmosphere, the prose, the gritty and “gothic” feel to the entire novel… This is artwork, Penguins. Pure, raw, and unfiltered artwork. I absolutely cannot wait to see what Mary Lindsey does next–and you can bet your beaks I’ll be watching closely! I’d recommend this to lovers of the paranormal, those tired of the same old “happily ever afters,” and hearts who consistently wonder what might be lurking in the dark. Be wary of the wine, Penguins–it might change everything, or kill you trying!

Book Review! Haven by Mary Lindsey
Haven by Mary Lindsey Genre: Young Adult (Paranormal/Fantasy Romance) Date Published: November 7, 2017 Publisher: Entangled Publishing
"We all hold a beast inside. The only difference is what form it takes when freed." Rain Ryland has never belonged anywhere, He’s used to people judging him for his rough background, his intimidating size, and now, his orphan status. He’s always been on the outside, looking in, and he’s fine with that. Until he moves to New Wurzburg and meets Friederike Burkhart. Freddie isn’t like normal teen girls, though. And someone wants her dead for it. Freddie warns he’d better stay far away if he wants to stay alive, but Rain’s never been good at running from trouble. For the first time, Rain has something worth fighting for, worth living for. Worth dying for. (Former title: Hide from Me.)
Haven by Mary Lindsey reminded me a little bit of Nightshade and a little bit of Blood and Chocolate, but at the same time it was its own story entirely. The story is told from Rain's point of view, and he sure has found himself in a crazy situation. He's pretty intense, and it works, because Freddie is even more so. Her life is her pack. She's fighting to keep her place, her image, and to survive within the pack. The wolf(Watchers) pack dynamic was rough and feral, yet complex. Add the Weavers to the dynamic, and it makes things even more complicated. They're a little backwards and uncivilized in many ways, and I think the Weavers have helped feed that mentality to keep the wolves beneath them. There is a lot going on among these two groups, good and bad. Haven was intriguing, suspenseful, and mysterious. I'm not sure if this is going to turn into a series or not, but I can easily see it become one. There is a lot of material to keep going with this one.
The ARC of Haven by Mary Lindsey was kindly provided to me by the publisher through NetGalley for review. The opinions are my own.
When Rain turned back to Freddie, he bit down a gasp of surprise. She’d stripped off her shirt and tipped her face to the moon, eyes closed, like one would do to the sun at the beach. And here he’d thought the landscape was the most beautiful thing he’d ever seen. The air was still. Eerily still, and her smooth skin appeared to glow from inside in the moonlight—her black lace bra sheer enough to make him a little dizzy. Without opening her eyes, she said, “Take off your shirt.” No way in hell was he going to argue with that. He yanked off his shirt, clutching it in his fist, waiting for his next instruction. He forgot how to breathe when she opened her pale eyes and moved toward him. Her gaze wasn’t focused on his face, though. It was on his chest. Stopping in front of him, she traced her fingers over the ink. “Raindrops?” she asked, finger outlining one of the shapes. “Tears,” he replied, again light-headed as she ran her fingertips over his pec. “For your mom?” “No. For all of us.” She stepped back and, for a long time, stared at the tattoo comprised of dozens of drops in a random pattern over his chest, spilling down his ribs. She traced a scar on his side with the tip of her finger. One of many marring his body from fights. “Your life has been sad.” And so had hers recently. Maybe that was why he felt so connected to her. Their shared grief, their shared stand against a harsh, unfeeling, screwed-up world. Their shared solitude. She turned back to the moon and raised her arms. “Do you feel it?” Well, that was a wide-open question. He was feeling lots of things. “The moon,” she said. “It’s like aloe when you’re sunburned. Try it.” He imitated her posture, head back, arms out, but felt nothing other than the throbbing hardness he always felt around her. “So, what do you think about that legend your aunt told you?” she asked. He opened his eyes to find her studying him. “That the rock can turn men into beasts?” His mind raced, wondering what would prompt that question and what answer she was looking for. Men were beasts. Horrible monsters at times. He’d seen it firsthand. “I believe we all hide a beast inside. The only difference is what form it takes when freed.” There it was again. That strange warm pull in his chest while she studied him. Like she totally got him—something no one else had ever bothered to do. He’d never been understood or accepted. People saw his size and found out his background and immediately wrote him off as dangerous or not worth the trouble. Not Freddie. She obviously found his answer acceptable, because she wound her fingers in his hair and hauled him against her for another kiss. Raw, open-mouthed, and hungry. He’d never met anyone like this, who made him burn so hot he thought he might die from need. Recovering from surprise, he placed his hands on either side of her bare rib cage, feeling her body expand and contract with each quick breath. Bones and hard muscle working beneath smooth, soft skin. Skin he wanted to touch all over. “I like you, Rain Ryland,” she said, dragging her nails down his back. “Like” didn’t even come close. He was on fire for her. Had thought of her night and day since he first saw those eerily pale eyes and badass attitude. She was smart, strong, and terribly, terribly dangerous, which turned him on like crazy. “I like you, too.” “How much?” Something was going on here. Something other than foreplay. “More than I’ve ever liked anyone.” Which was true and unexpected. This was more than physical, which was a terrifying thought for him. Maybe this time he could stay. Maybe this time he’d actually found a home and wouldn’t have to leave everything behind. He kissed her again, not wanting to think about legends, or leaving, or anything else for that matter. He wanted to just live in this moment as long as it lasted. Running his hands lower, his thumb brushed the unmistakable shape of a condom in her back pocket. He froze, and she smiled against his lips. “You scared, Sprinkles?” “Yes.” “Of me?” It was like she wanted him to fear her. “No.” He pulled back, amazed at how her eyes reflected the moon like clear glass. “Of this.” He gestured to the space he’d put between them. “Of whatever this is.” The intensity of it. The urgency. And worse, much worse—the potential loss of it. He’d never feared losing something before because he’d never had anything worth keeping. This girl, though. She was different. And he wanted her.
Lucky Stiff
First things first: Lucky Stiff, or at least this production of it, is indeed the ‘musical comedy’ it says it is. The punchlines are there, as are the exaggerated, larger than life characters. In particular, there’s Rita La Porter (Natalie Moore-Williams) and Vincent Di Ruzzio (Tom Keeling). They are siblings; the former is registered blind and the latter is an optometrist, a bittersweet irony. The narrative does get rather absurd at times, but this is all part of the fun, and there’s enjoyment to be found in the ridiculousness and implausibility of some of the show’s events. In terms of dramatic genres, it’s within the parameters of what could be considered farce.
This is one of those shows that is very silly, and it knows it. The title of the opening number, ‘Something Funny’s Going On’, made me wonder if this was going to be ‘funny’ in the sense of being peculiar, or being a source of merriment. It ended up being both. The set is sparse, with moveable wooden frames acting as main doors, connecting doors and, at one point, telephone booths – the action of the show takes place before the ubiquity of mobile phones. I wonder how different the narrative might have been if smartphones were at the disposal of the characters – some of the humour relies on certain people not being fully aware of what is going on, as the latest information hasn’t been communicated to them at that point in the proceedings.
The uncluttered set is, in some ways, refreshing, and allows the focus to be on the performers and the dialogue. But while the likes of the Emcee (Daniel Urch) and entertainer Dominique Du Monaco (Lydia Marazzó) are speaking and singing about Monte Carlo and how wonderful it is, there’s a distinct lack of evidence that this is the busy and bustling casino and entertainment venue that the music and lyrics assert it is. There needn’t have been anything too expensive – a video projection of a roulette wheel would have sufficed, for instance.
A three-piece band, under the direction of Richard Baker, adds much to the jaunty atmosphere created in this production. It isn’t the easiest of scores to navigate, and the sound balance between musicians and performers is very good, with no frustration about not catching any lyrics. This is hugely beneficial in a show in which the musical numbers are used to move the story onwards.
In some respects, the storyline is quite basic, but the details and inclusion of random minor characters make things somewhat complicated in the second half. A number portraying some sort of nightmare scene, ‘Welcome Back, Mr Witherspoon’, came across as superfluous. On the other hand, the ‘I wish’ song, ‘Mr Witherspoon’s Friday Night’, is a pleasure to listen to. There’s also a sublime duet between the said Harry Witherspoon (Tom Elliot Reade) and Annabel Glick (Natasha Hoeberigs), ‘Nice’, an expression of misplaced hatred. I also enjoyed ‘Times Like This’, in which Annabel sings lovingly about the companionship a dog can bring a lady.
Probably most impressive is Ian McCurrach as Tony Hendon, who, for reasons clearly explained early on in the show, spends much of the performance playing dead. At just under two hours including an interval (which did make me think it could have run straight through), it’s not the longest of musical theatre shows, but it is entertaining and enthusiastic escapism.
Review by Chris Omaweng
Shoe salesman Harry Witherspoon is stuck in a rut until, one day, he discovers he is to inherit his uncle’s fortune; but, there is a catch. To claim the inheritance Harry has to take his uncle’s body around the French Rivera for one last adventure! Chasing him for the same fortune are a dog lover from Brooklyn, a short-sighted Mafia Boss’ wife, and an optometrist. Add to that a host of other zany characters and you’ve got the recipe for a madcap evening.
