People who actually know this tune really love it, while I’ve always found it a little pretentious. That said, I recently gave it a listen for the first time in years after I picked up this UK picture disc and found it wasn’t nearly as bad as I remembered. It’s the theme song to the early 80s film “Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence,” a cheery little flick I’ve never seen about a WW II prisoner of war camp in Japan, naturally starring musicians David Bowie and Riuichi Sakamoto. How on earth did the producers only get one of them to record the theme and not the other? I mean, good call on bringing in Sylvian, who certainly still “borrowed” a lot artistically from Bowie at that point, but talk about a missed opportunity.
